Description

REACTIVE HOT MELT ADHESIVE COMPOSITIONS AND ARTICLES AND ASSEMBLIES THEREFROMTechnical field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to reactive hot melt adhesive compositions, articles and assemblies therefrom, especially a reactive hot melt adhesive compositions with good compatibility, high initial bonding strength, fast setting property and low viscosity. The reactive hot melt adhesive compositions can be used, for example, in furniture industries.Background of the invention

[0002] Polyurethane hot melt adhesives are long-established and widespread. In the context of industrial applications, polyurethane hot melt adhesives can be solid at room temperature, melt to a viscous liquid when heated to a moderate temperature, and applied to substrate to be bonded. The molten adhesive composition then cools and solidifies to form initial bond to the substrate. It can further react with moisture to form crosslinking structure and achieve high final strength. Such adhesives may consist of a polyol component and an isocyanate component with a functionality of two or more.

[0003] For numerous applications these adhesives are preferred over other adhesives since the adhesive bonds produced using them are of good bond strength, flexibility, and resistance to shock and fatigue. Nowadays moisture-curable polyurethane hot melt adhesives mixing with resins such as acrylic, ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) resins is common in the industry to improve the inherent cohesion and initial bonding strength of the adhesive to different materials. Poly (vinyl acetate) (PVAc) has long been used for various applications in different technical fields due to its good bonding strength to various substrates and low odor. For instance, poly (vinyl acetate) is the film-forming ingredient in many water-based (latex) adhesives and paints. However, poly (vinyl acetate) has compatibility issue in mixing with polyurethane hot melt adhesives, especially when the polyol component comprising crystalline polyesters. Therefore, there is a need in the art for reactive hot melt adhesive composition with low viscosity that is able to incorporate poly (vinyl acetate) and crystalline polyester as components to produce hot melt adhesives having high initial  bonding strength, fast setting property.Summary of the invention

[0004] It is therefore the object of the present invention to overcome the above-mentioned drawbacks by providing a reactive hot melt adhesive with good compatibility, high initial bonding strength and fast setting property.

[0006] According to one aspect, the present invention is directed to a hot melt adhesive produced by the reactive hot melt adhesive composition according to present invention.

[0007] According to still another aspect, the present invention also relates to an article comprising a substrate and a hot melt adhesive disposed on the substrate and the second substrate, wherein the hot melt adhesive is produced by the reactive hot melt adhesive composition according to present invention.

[0016] In the context of this disclosure, several terms shall be utilized.

[0017] The term “ambient temperature” refers to a temperature in the range of 15℃. to 35℃., inclusive.

[0018] The terms “polymer” is used herein consistent with its common usage in chemistry. Polymers are composed of many repeated subunits. The term “polymer” is used to describe the resultant material formed from a polymerization reaction. Polymers can have a degree of polymerization of about 20 to about 25000. As used herein polymer includes oligomers and polymers.

[0019] The term “Polyester” refers to polymers which contain multiple ester linkages. A polyester can be either linear or branched.

[0020] The term “Polyol” refers to the molecule comprising two or more -OH groups.

[0021] The term “at least one” or “one or more” used herein to define a component refers to the type of the component, and not to the absolute number of molecules. For example, “one or more polyols” means one type of polyol or a mixture of a plurality of different polyols.

[0025] For purposes of this invention, weight average molecular weight (Mw) is determined by gel permeation chromatography against a polystyrene standard.

[0026] The term "softening point" as used herein refers to the temperature at which a material, such as a amorphous polymer, loses its solid characteristics and becomes relatively fluid. A material's softening point as given herein is that temperature measured using the standard ball and ring method according to ASTM E28. For crystalline polymers, it refers to the temperature at which the three- dimensional long-range ordered state of the macromolecular chain structure transforms into a disordered viscous flow state, also known as the “melting point” .

[0027] As used herein, the glass transition temperature (Tg) is determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) employing a 20 K / min ramp rate and midpoint measurement in accordance with DIN 53 765.

[0089] Preparing Method of the reactive hot melt adhesive composition

[0090] The reactive hot melt adhesive compositions are formulated by two steps:

[0091] 1) simple mixing of the various components except polyisocyanate;

[0092] 2) adding polyisocyanate to react with polyol compounds.

[0093] Whilst the order of mixing of the components is not intended to be limited, it may be prudent to first form fused mixture by mixing, stirring, and heating polyols, vinyl acetate polymer (B) and thermal plastic polyurethane (C) , then adding polyisocyanate, then mixing the further components, such as catalyst.

[0094] The apparatuses for these mixing, stirring, and the like are not particularly limited. There can be used an automated mortar, a Henschel mixer, a three-roll mill, a ball mill, a planetary mixer, a bead  mill, and the like which are equipped with a stirrer and a heater. Also, an appropriate combination of these apparatuses may be used. The preparation method of the reactive hot melt adhesive composition is not particularly limited, as long as a composition in which the above-described components are uniformly mixed.

[0095] The reactive hot melt adhesive composition of the present invention can cure from 15 ℃ to 35 ℃, preferably from 20 ℃ to 30 ℃, more preferably at 23 ℃ to 27 ℃, and 50%relative humidity for from 1 to 7 days. As will be understood, the time and temperature curing profile for each reactive hot melt adhesive composition will vary, and different compositions can be designed to provide the curing profile that will be suited to the particularly industrial manufacturing process. According to another aspect of the invention, provided herein is a hot melt adhesive being an adhesive product of the reactive hot melt adhesive composition of the present invention.

[0096] According to a third aspect of the invention, provided herein is a laminate, comprising a first substrate, a second substrate, and an adhesive layer sandwiched therebetween. The first substrate and / or second substrate can be of a single material and a single layer or can include multiple layers of the same or different material (s) . The layers can be continuous or discontinuous.

[0097] There is no particular intention to the limit the substrates to which the present adhesive compositions may be applied. Preferably, the first and second substrates are independently of each other selected from a glass, a resin, a textile, a wood and a metal, and the adhesive layer being formed by curing the adhesive composition of the present invention.

[0098] In accordance with the broadest process aspects of the present invention, the above-described compositions are applied to a substrate and then cured.

[0099] In many instances, the compositions will be applied to a wet film thickness of from 50um to 100um.

[0100] The application of thinner layers within this range is more economical and provides for a reduced likelihood of deleterious thick cured regions. However, great control must be exercised in applying thinner coatings or layers so as to avoid the formation of discontinuous cured films.

[0152] The hot melt adhesive compositions of E2 to E13, CE1 to CE3 were prepared in reference to Example 1. The hot melt adhesive compositions of E2 to E13 and CE1 to CE3 were cured in reference to Example 1. More details are listed in in Tables 1, 2 , 3 and 4 in below result part.

[0153] Test Methods

[0154] <Compatibility Status>

[0155] Kept 200g hot melt adhesive composition in a glass bottle, put the bottle in an oven set at 130℃ for 1 hour, then took it out to observe if a phase separation occurred. If phase separation occurred, marked it as “not compatible” ; if no phase separation, marked the sample as “compatible” .

[0156] <Viscosity>

[0157] The viscosity in the present invention was measured at a temperature range at 130℃ with a 27# spindle, and a Brookfield viscometer. The viscosity less than 100000 cps is acceptable. The viscosity measurement results are shown in below tables.

[0158] Viscosity results are recorded and ranked as follows:

[0159] - Not pass: within the viscosity range of equal to or greater than 100000 cps.

[0160] - Pass: within the viscosity range of less than 100000 cps.

[0161] <Open Time test>

[0162] 10g of the adhesive composition prepared as above was coated on paper by an automatic film applicator (4340, available from Elecometer Corporation) at 130℃ with a thickness of 100 μm. A paper stripe in a size of 2.5 cm *10 cm was attached to the coated paper by finger pressure every 10 to 30 seconds. The open time was defined as the time until fiber tear of the paper stripe was observed.

[0163] Open time test results are recorded and ranked as follows:

[0164] - Not pass: open time of greater than 100 seconds.

[0165] - Pass: open time of equal to or less than 100 seconds

[0166] - Good: open time from 10 to 100 seconds.

[0167] - Excellent: open time from 10 to 50 seconds.

[0168] <Initial bonding strength at 2 minutes and Failure mode>

[0169] Each sample prepared as above was coated between two layers of PET films (available from Lianrui Corporation in Dongguan) in a size of 1 m *0.18 m by a roller heater (available from Weite Corporation in Taiwan) at 105 ℃ with a thickness of 50 μm so as to give a laminated sample.

[0170] The laminated sample was cured at 23 ℃ and 50%relative humidity for 2 minutes. 180° peeling strength was recorded as the initial bonding strength of the laminated sample. The laminated sample was placed in a tensile machine (available from Shenzhen SANS Testing Machine Co., Ltd) and the initial bonding strength was measured at 300 mm / min peeling speed. Each initial bonding strength at 2 minutes was measured for 3 times and the average value was recorded.

[0171] As referred herein, “Cohesive Failure mode” refers to that the adhesive splits and portions of the adhesive remain adhered to each of the bonded surfaces. A failure mode wherein an adhesive is removed cleanly from the substrate is referred to as “Adhesive Failure mode” . An adhesive having Cohesive Failure mode is considered to be more robust than those having Adhesive Failure mode.

[0172] Initial bonding strength and Failure mode test results are recorded and ranked as follows:

[0173] - Not pass: the initial bonding strength at 2 minutes less than 2.5 N / inch;

[0174] - Pass: the initial bonding strength at 2 minutes of equal to or greater than 2.5 N / inch;

[0175] - Good: the initial bonding strength at 2 minutes of equal to or greater than 10 N / inch with 100%Cohesive Failure mode.

[0176] Table 1. *Remarks: N / A refers to the respective testing cannot be conducted due to homogenous composition  cannot be achieved.

[0177] Table 1 shows the compositions and testing results of hot melt adhesives E1, CE1-CE3.

[0178] Hot melt adhesive composition E1 comprised PVAc and TPU which showed good compatibility, sample of E1 showed good initial strength and short open time. While CE1 didn’t comprise PVAc  or TPU, sample of CE1 had low initial strength. Compared with E1, CE2 didn’t comprise TPU or amorphous polyester polyol, the composition showed bad compatibility. CE3 didn’t comprise thermal plastic polyurethane, the phase separation issue of CE3 was less problematic than CE2, but the composition was still not compatible. It can be seen from Table 1, by adding TPU the compatibility issues caused by PVAc and crystalline polyols can be improved and composition had good initial bonding strength and short open time.

[0179] In present invention, it is surprisingly found that the reactive hot melt compositions comprising both TPU and PVAc have good compatibility, good initial bonding strength and short open time simultaneously.

[0180] Table 2.

[0181] Table 2 shows the compositions and testing results of adhesive compositions E1-E5.

[0182] In Examples 1 to 5, the reactive hot melt adhesive compositions were prepared according to the formulations provided by the present invention. These formulations especially included polyol mixture, PVAc, TPU and polyisocyanate. It can be seen that when the contents of the claimed components of the present invention are within certain ranges, PVAc and polyols can act synergistically with TPU such that the prepared reactive hot melt adhesive compositions have both initial bonding strength and short open time.

[0183] The results in Table 2 also show that with the increase of PVAc content in the adhesive composition, initial strength increases, and the open time reduces.

[0184] Table3.

[0185] Table 3 shows the compositions and testing results of adhesive compositions E4, E6-E9.

[0186] In Examples 6 to 9, the reactive hot melt adhesive compositions were prepared according to the formulations provided by the present invention. These formulations especially included polyol mixture, PVAc, TPU and polyisocyanate. It can be seen that with the increase of TPU content from 2-30 parts by weight, the viscosity of adhesive composition increases dramatically, and the open time reduces gradually. The initial bonding strength increase dramatically when the TPU content varies from 2 to 5 parts by weight, when the TPU content varies from 5 to 30 parts by weight, the initial bonding strength increase slightly.

[0187] Table 4. *Remarks: N / A refers to the respective testing cannot be conducted due to adhesion failure of peeling  test

[0188] Table 4 shows compositions and testing results of the adhesive compositions E7, E10-E13.

[0189] In examples E7, E10-E13, the reactive hot melt adhesive compositions comprise various TPU, including AA-BG based TPU (such as TPU 4003LH-2, 3H95A-1, L95090 ) , AA-HG based TPU (such as WHT-6190H) and PCL-based TPU (such as Pearlbond 521) . The sample showed improved PVAc hybrid PUR compatibility, good initial bonding strength and short open time.
