Description

Technical Field

[0001] This invention generally relates to a body fluid metering assembly, and is particularly intended for use in measuring diuresis. The invention also relates to a body fluid collection container and a body fluid metering unit suitable for use as part of a body fluid metering assembly. Background of the Invention

[0003] Fluid measurement devices are known in the art, particularly for measuring diuresis.

[0004] Urine output collection is typically performed by catheter insertion into the patient, which involves passing a catheter through the patient's urethra and connecting the other end of the catheter to a container or drainage bag via a flexible tube of a certain length. Typically, the container or bag for collecting urine is supported below the patient from the bed or associated support system, and urine is drained from the patient's body through the flexible tube by gravity into the container or bag.

[0005] A common solution for measuring diuresis is direct manual visual reading from the urine collection container or bag. Many of these systems use urine collection bags made of transparent and flexible plastic material, marked with graduations indicating the volume of urine collected in the bag. In other systems, the urine collection reservoir comprises a rigid and transparent plastic reservoir in fluid communication with an attached collection bag, also marked with graduations indicating the volume of urine collected in the reservoir. In the latter case, urine initially flows and is stored in the reservoir, which acts as a measuring chamber, before being emptied into the attached collection bag. The amount of urine collected is determined visually at periodic intervals using the relevant graduations, allowing an indication of the urine flow rate. This solution is not entirely satisfactory because measurements on the graduations are inherently inaccurate and depend on caregivers performing the measurements at precise time intervals. Furthermore, depending on the system's location, measurement readings can sometimes be difficult to obtain. Additionally, this solution requires emptying the bags or reservoirs at regular intervals to allow space for refilling.

[0006] U.S. Patent No. 4,712,567 A discloses a fluid measurement assembly for measuring diuresis, i.e., for monitoring and measuring the amount of urine produced by a patient during urination, the entirety of which is incorporated herein by reference. More precisely, the assembly includes an excretion collection bag configured to collect urine, a measurement and processing unit, and a flexible tube attached to the inlet port of the excretion collection bag and configured to connect to a catheter. The measurement and processing unit includes a load cell and a coupling mechanism configured to releasably connect the excretion collection bag to the load cell. The excretion collection bag is mechanically coupled to the load cell via a handle assembly fixed to the upper portion of the bag, the handle assembly being supported on a pair of arms fixed to the load cell. The measurement and processing unit processes sensor data supplied by the load cell and derives a measurement of the amount of urine collected. In practice, the measurement and processing unit relates to the weight of the urine and measures the urine volume by converting weight to volume by taking into account the urine's volumetric density. Changes in urine volume over time provide a reliable indicator of urine flow rate, which can be used to monitor the evolution of a patient's clinical condition.

[0007] The coupling mechanism for connecting the discharge collection bag to the pressure sensing element disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,712,567 A is not robust or reliable enough, especially since the discharge collection bag may be accidentally released, which is undesirable. Furthermore, movement or vibration can disturb the discharge collection bag and cause erroneous sensor measurements.

[0008] Other similar solutions are known in the art, for example, from International (PCT) Publications WO 2006 / 031249 A2, WO 2014 / 036769 A1, WO 2017 / 149272A1, U.S. Patent Publications US2010 / 0228148 A1 and US 2017 / 0307423A1. All of these solutions suffer from essentially the same drawback as the solution disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,712,567A: the connection between the measuring and processing unit and the collection bag is unreliable and unstable.

[0009] Therefore, a solution is needed that prevents accidental release of containers used to collect bodily fluids and ensures a more reliable and stable connection between the containers and associated measurement and processing units, without compromising maneuvering operations.

[0010] US Patent Publication No. US2018 / 0214297 A1 discloses a urine output collection and monitoring system that does not rely on the use of pressure-sensing elements to determine the amount and / or flow rate of urine accumulated in a urine collection container. Instead, such measurement is obtained through an optical device, namely, using a photodetector array to detect a fan-shaped beam signal emitted by a light source that passes through a portion of the urine collection container where urine has accumulated. Invention Overview

[0012] The overall objective of this invention is to provide an improved body fluid metering component.

[0013] More precisely, the objective of this invention is to provide a solution that prevents the accidental release of the body fluid collection container from the coupling mechanism of the associated body fluid metering unit.

[0014] Another objective of the present invention is to provide a solution that ensures a reliable and stable connection between the body fluid collection container and the associated body fluid metering unit.

[0015] Another objective of the present invention is to provide a solution in which the assembly and disassembly of the body fluid collection container are easy to manipulate.

[0016] These objectives are achieved through the solutions defined in the claims.

[0017] According to the present invention, a body fluid metering assembly as defined in claim 1 is provided, particularly a body fluid metering assembly for measuring diuresis, comprising: (i) a body fluid collection container configured to collect body fluids, such as urine; (ii) a body fluid metering unit including a pressure-sensing element and a coupling mechanism configured to releasably connect the body fluid collection container to the pressure-sensing element, the body fluid metering unit being configured to process sensor data supplied by the pressure-sensing element and derive a measurement of the amount and / or flow rate of body fluid accumulated in the body fluid collection container based on a load applied to the pressure-sensing element; and (iii) a tube attached to an inlet port of the body fluid collection container and configured to connect to a body fluid source. According to the present invention, the body fluid collection container is a substantially rigid container, and the coupling mechanism is a spring-loaded interlocking mechanism configured to cooperate with and interlock with one or more interlocking members disposed on and the body fluid collection container to form a stable connection between the body fluid metering unit and the body fluid collection container.

[0018] According to a preferred embodiment, the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism includes at least one spring-loaded release lever with a locking portion configured to cooperate with a locking segment (preferably shaped as a locking notch) disposed on a corresponding one of one or more interlocking members. Specifically, each spring-loaded release lever can be supported to pivot between a first position and a second position, in which the locking portion of the spring-loaded release lever engages with the locking segment of the corresponding interlocking member and prevents disengagement of the fluid collection container; and in the second position, the locking portion of the spring-loaded release lever disengages from the locking segment of the corresponding interlocking member and allows disengagement of the fluid collection container.

[0019] According to an embodiment of the invention, the body fluid collection container includes at least one locking extension that acts as an interlocking member and protrudes from the body fluid collection container, each locking extension being configured to engage with a corresponding locking hole provided on a spring-loaded interlocking mechanism. More specifically, referring to the preferred embodiment discussed in the preceding paragraphs, the body fluid collection container preferably includes a first locking extension and a second locking extension that act as interlocking members and protrude from the body fluid collection container, each locking extension being configured to engage with a corresponding locking hole provided on a spring-loaded interlocking mechanism. In the latter preferred embodiment, the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism includes a first spring-loaded release rod and a second spring-loaded release rod, the first spring-loaded release rod and the second spring-loaded release rod cooperating with the first locking extension and the second locking extension, respectively.

[0020] Each of the aforementioned locking extensions may protrude substantially horizontally from the fluid collection container, preferably rearward from the front side of the fluid collection container.

[0021] According to a particularly preferred embodiment, a spring-loaded interlocking mechanism extends from the lower side of the fluid metering unit, and the upper portion of the fluid collection container exhibits a recess configured to receive the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism, with each interlocking member located within the recess. This ensures reliable guidance of the fluid collection container when it engages or disengages from the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism.

[0022] Preferably, a portion of the tube is fixed to the lateral side of the body fluid metering unit. Specifically, the tube may advantageously include a drip chamber positioned upstream of the inlet port of the body fluid collection container. This ensures that any tension applied to the tube will not cause unintended movement of the body fluid collection container, which could otherwise interfere with the measurement process. The inlet port of the drip chamber is preferably provided with a ventilated air inlet including an antibacterial air filter membrane, which ensures optimal flow of body fluid at the inlet port and prevents bacterial contamination.

[0023] The aforementioned second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism may specifically include at least one second spring-loaded release lever, which includes at least one locking portion configured to cooperate with a locking segment (preferably shaped as a locking notch) disposed on a corresponding one of one or more transverse interlocking members. Preferably, the second spring-loaded release lever is supported for pivoting between a first position and a second position, in which the locking portion of the second spring-loaded release lever engages with the locking segment of the corresponding transverse interlocking member and prevents disengagement of the infusion chamber, and in the second position, the locking portion of the second spring-loaded release lever disengages from the locking segment of the corresponding transverse interlocking member and allows disengagement of the infusion chamber.

[0024] According to a variation of the invention, the infusion chamber includes at least one lateral locking extension that acts as a lateral interlocking member and protrudes outward from the infusion chamber, each lateral locking extension being configured to engage with a corresponding locking hole provided on a second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism. More specifically, referring to the embodiments discussed in the preceding paragraphs, the infusion chamber preferably includes a first lateral locking extension and a second lateral locking extension that act as lateral interlocking members and protrude from the infusion chamber, each lateral locking extension being configured to engage with a corresponding locking hole provided on a second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism. In the latter preferred embodiment, the second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism includes only one second spring-loaded release lever that cooperates with both the first and second lateral locking extensions.

[0025] Preferably, the tube further includes a flexible tube portion inserted between the outlet port of the infusion chamber and the inlet port of the body fluid collection container. This flexible tube portion can be specifically configured as a coiled tube portion.

[0026] According to another aspect of the invention, the body fluid metering unit includes a processing unit operatively communicating with an analog-to-digital (A / D) converter coupled to a pressure-sensing element to convert analog signals from the pressure-sensing element into digital sensor data. The processing unit is configured to digitally process the sensor data supplied by the A / D converter to derive a measurement of the amount and / or flow rate of body fluid accumulated in the body fluid collection container. Preferably, the processing unit also operatively communicates with one or more electronic components of the body fluid metering unit that include:

[0027] - A wireless transceiver configured to establish wireless communication with a remote receiver and to wirelessly transmit data to the remote receiver.

[0028] - Near Field Communication (NFC) transceiver, which is configured to establish a near field communication link with an external NFC device;

[0029] - A battery controller, connected to a battery, particularly a rechargeable battery, that powers the body fluid metering unit, is configured to monitor the battery's state of charge; and

[0030] - An accelerometer, which is configured to detect and monitor the movement of the body fluid metering unit.

[0031] Also claimed in independent claim 27 is a bodily fluid collection container configured to collect bodily fluids, such as urine, suitable for use as part of the aforementioned bodily fluid metering assembly. This bodily fluid collection container is a substantially rigid container comprising one or more interlocking members configured to cooperate and interlock with a spring-loaded interlocking mechanism of the bodily fluid metering unit. Preferred features of this bodily fluid collection container also include the relevant features discussed above in conjunction with the bodily fluid metering assembly of the present invention, which are described in dependent claims 28 to 34.

[0032] Also claimed in independent claim 35 is a body fluid metering unit suitable for use as part of the aforementioned body fluid metering assembly, the body fluid metering unit comprising a pressure-sensing element and a coupling mechanism configured to releasably connect a body fluid collection container of the body fluid metering assembly to the pressure-sensing element, the body fluid metering unit being configured to process sensor data supplied by the pressure-sensing element and derive a measurement of the amount and / or flow rate of body fluid accumulated in the body fluid collection container based on a load applied to the pressure-sensing element. The coupling mechanism is also a spring-loaded interlocking mechanism configured to cooperate and interlock with one or more interlocking members disposed on the body fluid collection container. Preferred features of the body fluid metering unit also include the relevant features of the body fluid metering unit discussed above in conjunction with the body fluid metering assembly of the present invention, which are described in dependent claims 36 to 53.

[0055] Detailed Implementation of the Invention

[0056] The invention will be described in conjunction with various illustrative embodiments. It should be understood that the scope of the invention covers all combinations and sub-combinations of the features of the embodiments disclosed herein.

[0057] As described herein, when two or more parts or components are described as being connected, fixed, attached or joined to each other, they may be connected, fixed, attached or joined to each other directly or through one or more intermediate parts.

[0058] This invention will combine with, for example Figures 1A to 8 Various embodiments of the fluid measurement component shown are described, and the component is particularly designed for measuring diuresis.

[0059] Figures 1A to 1C This is an illustration of a particularly preferred embodiment of a body fluid metering assembly according to the invention, generally indicated by reference numeral 1. The body fluid metering assembly 1 essentially comprises three main components: a body fluid metering unit 10, a body fluid collection container 20 configured to collect body fluids (i.e., urine in this example), and a tube 30 attached to an inlet port 20A of the body fluid collection container 20 and configured to connect to a body fluid source (i.e., a urinary catheter in this example, not shown) via a tube portion 31. Although not specifically shown, the inlet port 20A may advantageously be provided with an anti-reflux valve to prevent urine from flowing back into the tube 30, thereby preventing the backward migration of bacteria.

[0060] The body fluid metering unit 10 includes a pressure measuring element (in) Figures 1A to 1C Not shown in, but in Figure 6 (See also) and a coupling mechanism, which is configured to releasably connect the body fluid collection container to the pressure sensing element (see also) Figure 8(Functional diagram). The body fluid measurement unit 10 is essentially configured to process sensor data supplied by the pressure-sensing element and, based on the load applied to the pressure-sensing element, derive a measurement of the amount and / or flow rate of urine accumulated in the body fluid collection container 20. The basic measurement principle itself is known in the art, for example, from U.S. Patent No. 4,712,567 A, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.

[0061] In use, the body fluid metering unit 10 is attached to the bed frame or a separate stabilizing support structure by means of a suitable attachment mechanism (not shown), such as a fastening strap or clip. The suitable attachment mechanism may be specifically provided on the rear side of the body fluid metering unit 10.

[0062] Improvements in measurement accuracy and reliability are achieved as a result of this invention. More specifically, in the context of this invention, a substantially rigid container is used as the fluid collection container 20. This ensures that urine accumulates in the container in a defined manner and does not lead to uncontrolled deformation of the collection container, which could negatively impact measurement accuracy and reliability. In this respect, the fluid collection container 20 can be made of any suitable rigid material, including plastic materials such as polycarbonates. The material can be opaque or substantially transparent, in which case the container 20 can additionally be provided with graduations, as known in the art, to allow for visual measurement of diuresis.

[0063] As is common in the art, container 20 may be provided with a discharge port 20B to allow for the emptying of container 20. A suitable manually actuated rotary flushing valve, although not shown, may be provided at discharge port 20B to facilitate the emptying operation. In this regard, the upper side 20.2 of the body fluid collection container 20 may additionally be provided with a ventilation air inlet 200 (with an antibacterial air filter membrane), which ensures optimal and rapid emptying of container 20.

[0064] Furthermore, the coupling mechanism for connecting container 20 to metering unit 10 is specifically designed as a spring-loaded interlocking mechanism, indicated by reference numeral 50, which is configured to engage with one or more interlocking members disposed on container 20 (in... Figures 1A to 1C(Not visible in the image) Collaboration. This is a fundamental difference compared to known solutions that use rather rudimentary handle and hook arrangements. Due to this invention, a stable connection is formed between the fluid metering unit 10 and the fluid collection container 20. Furthermore, unintentional release of the container 20 from the metering unit 10 is prevented. While being more robust and reliable, this solution also avoids negative impacts on operational procedures, as the container 20 can be easily connected to or disconnected from the metering unit 10 via the simple engagement or disengagement of the interlocking mechanism 50, as explained below.

[0065] In the illustrated example, a pair of interlocking components are provided to cooperate with the spring-loaded locking mechanism 50, for example, as shown below. Figure 2A and Figures 3A to 3D As shown. More precisely, a first locking extension 250a and a second locking extension 250b, which act as interlocking members, protrude from the body fluid collection container 20. Preferably, as shown, each locking extension 250a, 250b protrudes substantially horizontally from the body fluid collection container 20, i.e., rearwardly from the front side 20.1 of the body fluid collection container 20. In the illustrated example, the locking extensions are advantageously located within a recess 20a formed in the upper portion of the body fluid collection container 20, and the locking extensions 250a, 250b are supported by and protrude rearwardly from a wall segment 25, which extends partially within the recess 20a along the front side 20.1 of the container 20 (see particularly). Figures 3A to 3D ).

[0066] The locking extensions 250a and 250b are configured to mate with corresponding locking holes 50a and 50b provided on the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50, as detailed below. Figure 4A , Figure 4E and Figure 6 As shown. The overall shape of the locking extensions 250a, 250b and the associated locking holes 50a, 50b may vary, but is preferably chosen in such a way that it facilitates engagement and disengagement of the interlocking mechanism 50 with the locking extensions 250a, 250b, and ensures stable and reliable guidance and support of the container 20.

[0067] In the illustrated example, it can be understood that the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50 advantageously extends from the lower side 10.1 of the fluid metering unit 10, and the recess 20a formed in the upper portion of the fluid collection container 20 is configured to fully receive the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50, which also supports and facilitates the engagement and disengagement of the container 20. The recess 20a advantageously acts as a guide for the engagement and disengagement of the container 20 relative to the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50. This also results in a compact overall assembly, such as... Figure 1A and Figure 1B What is depicted.

[0068] like Figure 6 As shown in more detail, the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50 is directly connected to the associated pressure-sensing element of the body fluid metering unit 10, indicated by reference numeral 15, which is housed within the unit 10. For this purpose, the upper housing portion 51 of the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50 is provided with an extension 51A (in... Figure 4E (Partially visible in the middle), the extension 51A protrudes upward through a corresponding opening (not shown) formed in the lower side 10.1 of the body fluid metering unit 10. The upper housing portion 51 is fixed to the lower housing portion 52 to accommodate various mechanical components of the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50, which will be described in detail below.

[0069] from Figure 6 As can be readily seen, the pressure measuring element 15 is preferably an S-type pressure measuring element comprising an S-shaped block fixed at its upper end to a suitable portion of the fluid collection unit 10 and at its lower end to a spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50 (and the associated container 20 when engaged), thereby allowing measurement of the load applied to the pressure measuring element 15. S-type pressure measuring elements (and other types of pressure measuring elements) are commercially available, for example from Mettler-Toledo (Schweiz) GmbH (www.mt.com), and are used in various applications. To prevent damage to the pressure measuring element, such as due to the fluid collection container 20 becoming stuck during patient bed movement or someone stepping on the fluid collection container 20, a pressure measuring element with increased traction resistance (exceeding, for example, 100 kg or more) is particularly beneficial.

[0070] Preferably, the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50 includes at least one spring-loaded release lever that cooperates with one or more of the aforementioned interlocking members. More precisely, in the illustrated example, as... Figure 1A , Figures 4A to 4E , Figure 5 and Figure 6 As shown, two such spring-loaded release levers 55a and 55b are provided for cooperating with the first locking extension 250a and the second locking extension 250b, respectively. Each of these spring-loaded release levers 55a and 55b includes locking portions 55A and 55B, respectively, which lock portions 55A and 55B in... Figure 4A and Figure 4E The middle part is visible, and Figure 5More fully visible in the diagram. Each locking portion 55A, 55B is configured to cooperate with locking segments 250A, 250B respectively provided on the corresponding interlocking members 250a, 250b. In the illustrated example, locking segments 250A, 250B advantageously adopt the shape of a locking notch (see also...). Figure 2A and Figures 3A to 3D The locking notch is formed at the distal end of the locking extensions 250a and 250b. Figure 5 As shown in more detail (the upper housing portion 51 of the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50 has been omitted for illustrative purposes), when the container 20 is fully engaged with the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50, each locking portion 55A, 55B engages with the associated locking recesses 250A, 250B, respectively, thereby locking the container 20 in place. Conversely, disengagement of the locking portions 55A, 55B from the associated locking recesses 250A, 250B releases the locking extensions 250a, 250b, thereby allowing the container 20 to disengage from the interlocking mechanism 50.

[0071] As in Figure 5 As is more readily apparent, each release lever 55a, 55b is preferably supported (here supported between the upper housing portion 51 and the lower housing portion 52 of the interlocking mechanism 50) to pivot about pivot points 55.1, 55.2 respectively, thereby allowing each release lever 55a, 55b to be in a first position (e.g., Figure 5 The device moves between the first and second positions. In the first position, locking portions 55A and 55B respectively engage with locking segments 250A and 250B (thereby preventing the fluid collection container 20 from detaching). In the second position, locking portions 55A and 55B respectively disengage from locking segments 250A and 250B (thereby allowing the fluid collection container 20 to detach).

[0072] By default, when no action is applied to the release levers 55a and 55b, the release levers 55a and 55b are pushed to the aforementioned first position by the action of a spring element (not shown), which is located in the recessed portion 56 between the two release levers 55a and 55b (see...). Figure 5 )middle.

[0073] The geometry and arrangement of the locking extensions 250a and 250b and the release levers 55a and 55b (especially the shape of the guide front surface of the locking extensions 250a and 250b and the shape of the locking portions 55A and 55B) are chosen such that the insertion of the locking extensions 250a and 250b into their associated locking holes 50a and 50b causes the release levers 55a and 55b to pivot away from their first engaged position toward a second disengaged position. When the container 20 is fully engaged, the release levers 55a and 55b are automatically pushed back to the first engaged position by the action of the associated spring element, thereby locking the container 20 in the proper position on the interlocking mechanism 50. Disengagement of the container 20 is achieved by simply pressing the two levers 55a and 55b against each other against the action of the spring element.

[0074] Now refer to Figures 1A to 1C , Figure 2A , Figure 2B , Figures 4A to 4E , Figure 7A and Figure 7B Let us now discuss another advantageous aspect of the invention, relating to the tube 30 attached to the inlet port 20A of the body fluid collection container 20. Given that the tube 30 is connected to the container 20 suspended below the metering unit 10, movement of the tube 30, such as movement caused by manipulation of the tube portion 31, could negatively impact measurement accuracy. To prevent this, a portion of the tube 30 is preferably fixed to the lateral side 10.2 of the body fluid metering unit 10, which effectively isolates the body fluid collection container 20 from any disturbance caused by movement of the tube 30.

[0075] Even more preferably, as shown, the tube 30 includes a drip chamber (also called a pasteur drip chamber) 32 positioned upstream of the inlet port 20A of the body fluid collection container 20, the drip chamber 32 being fixed to the lateral side 10.2 of the body fluid metering unit 10. In the illustrated example, this is advantageously achieved by providing the metering unit 10 with a second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 60 fixed to the lateral side 10.2 of the metering unit 10, the second spring-loaded mechanism being configured to interlock with one or more lateral interlocking members (in) disposed on the outer portion of the drip chamber 32. Figures 1A to 1C (Invisible in the middle) Collaboration and interlocking.

[0076] The inlet port 32A of the infusion chamber 32, which is connected to the tube portion 31, is preferably provided with a ventilated air inlet 320 including an antibacterial air filter membrane. The ventilated air inlet improves the flow of bodily fluids at the inlet port 20A of the container 20 while preventing bacterial contamination.

[0077] In the illustrated example, such as Figure 2A and Figure 2BAs shown, a pair of lateral interlocking members are provided for cooperation with a spring-loaded locking mechanism 60. More precisely, the infusion chamber 32 includes a first lateral locking extension 360a and a second lateral locking extension 360b, which act as lateral interlocking members and protrude outward from the infusion chamber 32. Each lateral locking extension 360a, 360b is configured to mate with corresponding locking holes 60a, 60b respectively provided on the second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 60, for example, as shown. Figure 4B and Figure 7A The overall shape of the lateral locking extensions 360a, 360b and the associated locking holes 60a, 60b, as depicted, can be varied again, but is preferably selected to facilitate engagement and disengagement of the second interlocking mechanism 60 with the lateral locking extensions 360a, 360b of the drip chamber 32.

[0078] The second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 60 is functionally similar to the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50, ensuring a stable and reliable connection between the infusion chamber 32 and the body fluid metering unit 10. In the illustrated example, the second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 60 includes an outer cover portion 61 and an inner cover portion 62 fixed to the lateral side 10.2 of the body fluid metering unit 10, which together house the mechanical components of the second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 60.

[0079] Preferably, the second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 60 includes at least one second spring-loaded release lever that cooperates with the aforementioned one or more lateral interlocking members. More precisely, in the illustrated example, as... Figure 1A , Figure 1C , Figures 4A to 4D , Figure 7A and Figure 7B As shown, a spring-loaded release lever 65 is provided for cooperation with both a first locking extension 360a and a second locking extension 360b. In the illustrated example, the spring-loaded release lever 65 includes a first locking portion 65A and a second locking portion 65B, which... Figure 4B and Figure 7A The middle part is visible, and Figure 7B More fully visible in the diagram. Each locking portion 65A, 65B is configured to cooperate with locking segments 360A, 360B respectively provided on the corresponding transverse interlocking members 360a, 360b. In the illustrated example, locking segments 360A, 360B advantageously adopt locking notches (see details). Figure 2B The locking notch is formed at the distal end of the locking extensions 360a and 360b, in the shape of a ) . Figure 7A and Figure 7B Viewing is understandable (for illustrative purposes). Figure 7BThe outer cover portion 61 of the second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 60 has been omitted. Each locking portion 65A, 65B is positioned such that it engages with the associated locking recesses 360A, 360B respectively when the infusion chamber 32 is fully engaged with the second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 60, thereby locking the infusion chamber 32 in place. Conversely, disengagement of the locking portions 65A, 65B from the associated locking recesses 360A, 360B releases the lateral locking extensions 360a, 360b, thereby allowing the infusion chamber 32 to disengage from the second interlocking mechanism 60.

[0080] like Figure 7B As can be more readily seen, the second release lever 65 is preferably supported (here supported between the outer cover portion 61 and the inner cover portion 62 of the second interlocking mechanism 60) to pivot about the pivot point 65.1, thereby allowing the release lever 65 to move between a first (lowered) position (as depicted in the figure) and a second (raised) position. In the first (lowered) position, locking portions 65A, 65B engage with locking segments 360A, 360B (thereby preventing disengagement of the infusion chamber 32), and in the second (raised) position, locking portions 65A, 65B disengage from locking segments 360A, 360B (thereby allowing disengagement of the infusion chamber 32).

[0081] By default, when no action is applied to the release lever 65, the release lever 65 is pushed to the aforementioned first lowered position by the action of a spring element (not shown), which is located above the position of the lever 65 in the invisible recessed portion 66 formed in the cover members 61, 62 (see Figure 7B )middle.

[0082] The geometry and arrangement of the locking extensions 360a and 360b and the release lever 65 (especially the shape of the guide front face of the locking extensions 360a and 360b and the shape of the locking portions 65A and 65B) are selected such that the insertion of the locking extensions 360a and 360b into the associated locking holes 60a and 60b causes the release lever 65 to pivot away from its first engaged position toward a second disengaged position. When the infusion chamber 32 is fully engaged, the release lever 65 is automatically pushed back to the first engaged position by the action of the associated spring element, thereby locking the infusion chamber 32 in the proper position on the second interlocking mechanism 60. In the illustrated example, disengagement of the infusion chamber 32 is achieved by simply pushing the lever 65 upward against the action of the spring element.

[0083] from Figure 2A , Figure 2B , Figure 4B , Figure 7A and Figure 7BAs can be understood from the illustration, the drip chamber 32 is advantageously also provided with a guide member 360c, which is formed as an additional lateral extension protruding outward from the drip chamber 32. The guide member 360c is configured to cooperate with a corresponding guide hole 60c provided on the second spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 60 to ensure a stable connection between the drip chamber 32 and the metering unit 10.

[0084] In addition to the aforementioned drip chamber 32, the tube 30 preferably also includes a flexible tube portion 33, which is inserted between the outlet port 32B of the drip chamber 32 and the inlet port 20A of the body fluid collection container 20, such as... Figures 1A to 1C , Figure 2A and Figure 2B As shown, the flexible tube portion 33 can be advantageously configured as a coiled tube portion, which adequately addresses the fact that the container 20 is suspended below the metering unit 10 and prevents any interference with the measurement process.

[0085] Figure 8 This is a functional block diagram illustrating the functional electronic components of a body fluid metering unit 10 according to a preferred embodiment. In the illustrated embodiment, the body fluid metering unit 10 is preferably battery-powered and includes a battery 18 that supplies power to the body fluid metering unit 10. Figure 8 The diagram also schematically depicts a pressure-sensing element 15 connected to a body fluid collection container 20 via a spring-loaded interlocking mechanism 50.

[0086] The illustrated metering unit 10 also includes a printed circuit board 100 carrying the electronic components necessary for regulating and processing the sensor signals generated by the pressure-sensing element 15, including an analog-to-digital (A / D) converter 115. The A / D converter 115 is coupled to the pressure-sensing element 15 and is designed to convert the analog signals from the pressure-sensing element 15 into processable digital sensor data. The A / D converter 115 is operatively communicateable with a processing unit 101 (such as a suitable CPU or microcontroller), which is programmed to digitally process the sensor data supplied by the A / D converter to derive measurements of the amount and / or flow rate of the fluid accumulated in the container 20.

[0087] Processing unit 101 is also preferably operatively in communication with additional electronic components of body fluid metering unit 10, which is also disposed on printed circuit board 100, i.e.:

[0088] - Wireless transceiver 105, which is configured to establish wireless communication with a remote receiver and wirelessly transmit data wirelessly to the remote receiver.

[0089] - Near Field Communication (NFC) transceiver 106, which is configured to establish a near field communication link with an external NFC device;

[0090] - Battery controller 118, connected to battery 18, configured to monitor the state of charge of battery 18; and

[0091] - Accelerometer 120, which is configured to detect and monitor the movement of the body fluid metering unit 10.

[0092] The wireless transceiver 105 is specifically designed to wirelessly transmit data representing the volume and / or flow rate of a measured bodily fluid to a remote device, such as a computer, tablet, etc. Additional software can be implemented on the computer or tablet to provide the end user with advanced information, such as an indication of the actual flow rate of the recorded bodily fluid, and statistical descriptions of the evolution of fluid output and other information relevant to the patient's clinical condition.

[0093] For purposes such as constructing and configuring the body fluid metering unit 10, the NFC transceiver 106 can be particularly useful for establishing a secure communication link between the body fluid metering unit 10 and the constructing device. The NFC transceiver 106 can also be used specifically for authentication purposes to ensure that only authorized personnel have administrative access to the functionality and configuration options of the body fluid metering unit 10.

[0094] Regarding the battery controller 118, the battery 18 can be a rechargeable battery, such as a lithium-ion battery. In this case, it is necessary to ensure proper monitoring and control of the battery's state of charge and charging cycle. Figure 8 Reference numeral 10A indicates a suitable connector for connecting to an external battery charger, wherein connector 10A is in Figure 4A , Figure 4B and Figure 4D It is also visible in the middle, and is set on the lower side 10.1 of the metering unit 10. Figure 4A , Figure 4B and Figure 4D Reference number 10B indicates the status LED ( Figure 8 (Not shown in the image), this status LED can be used to provide a visual indication of the power status of the body fluid metering unit 10 and the charging status of the battery 18.

[0095] Accelerometer 120 is particularly useful for detecting and monitoring movements that may interfere with or otherwise affect the measurement accuracy of the body fluid metering unit 10. In this respect, the accelerometer can detect movements that may cause spurious sensor signals from the pressure measuring element 15, and the associated spurious data is discarded or filtered out. Accelerometer 120 can in particular be a triaxial (or three-dimensional) accelerometer 120 configured to detect movements in all directions.

[0096] Additional electronic components or functions can be envisioned. Specifically, the processing unit 101 can be configured to monitor the volume and / or flow rate of bodily fluids and allow the setting of corresponding detection thresholds to trigger alarms, such as triggering an alarm when the detected volume or flow rate of bodily fluids exceeds or falls below a predetermined detection threshold. For example, an alarm can be set to trigger when the bodily fluid collection container 20 needs to be emptied. In this context, the bodily fluid metering unit 10 can additionally be equipped with integrated sound and / or visual indicators to generate audible and / or visual alarms.

[0097] Various modifications and / or improvements can be made to the above embodiments without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

[0098] For example, while the illustrated embodiment shows a spring-loaded interlocking mechanism including at least one spring-loaded release lever, this preferred feature is optional, and one can alternatively conceive of designing the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism in such a way that the release of the interlocking member is caused by the insertion of a suitable tool or a dedicated release element. However, the use of one or more spring-loaded release levers is preferred, as this greatly facilitates the maneuvering operation.

[0099] Furthermore, a spring-loaded interlocking mechanism could alternatively utilize a so-called snap-fit interlocking element that integrates the spring component, i.e., an element exhibiting an elastically interlocking portion or segment. However, the illustrated embodiment remains the preferred solution because all movable parts of the spring-loaded interlocking mechanism are integrated into the fluid metering unit, which does not negatively impact the complexity of the associated fluid collection container. Therefore, the production cost of the fluid collection container itself is comparable to that of conventional fluid collection containers or bags.
