Description

Field of the Invention

[0001] The present disclosure relates to polysiloxane-based coating compositions useful for protective coatings, particularly anti-corrosion coatings, and the like. Background of the Invention

[0002] The use of polysiloxane resins as coatings for corrosion protection or as ideal resin additives in forming protective coatings is known in the art. The addition of polysiloxane resins helps the wear resistance, corrosion resistance and weather resistance of the resulting cured coating film.

[0003] In practical applications, in order to further improve the various required properties of polysiloxane resin coatings and impart new functions, polysiloxane resins are often modified, such as by epoxy modification or acrylate modification, etc. Such coatings can be used to provide long-term protection for steel, concrete, aluminum and other structures under a wide range of corrosive conditions (extending from atmospheric exposure to complete immersion in highly corrosive solutions).

[0004] Epoxide resins are those having more than one 1,2-epoxy group per molecule and may be saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic. Epoxy resins typically contain glycidyl ester or glycidyl ether groups and have an epoxide equivalent weight of 100-5000.

[0005] The compounds used for acrylate modification are generally a wide range of acrylate-functional compounds, oligomers, polymers or resins.

[0006] For example, CN105073919A discloses an epoxy-polysiloxane coating composition comprising a polysiloxane, a non-aromatic epoxide resin, and a curing system comprising a blend of at least one trialkoxy-functional aminosilane and at least one amino-functional polysiloxane resin.

[0007] In addition, CN101052671A also discloses a fast-curing modified polysiloxane composition, which comprises an alkoxy or silanol functionalized siloxane intermediate, at least one amine reactive component, an epoxy functionalized component, and a curing agent selected from amines, aminosilanes, ketimines, and aldimines. The coating composition has fast curing and improved curing properties, and can form a fully cured protective film in a shortened time.

[0008] Another prior art document CN106675133A provides an acrylate-modified polysiloxane resin, which is compounded from an active polysiloxane intermediate, a cyclohexyl-containing acrylate, a multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomer, and an aminoalkyl alkoxysilane. The cyclohexyl acrylate is prepared by an addition reaction of dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate and hydroxy acrylate.

[0009] However, although the epoxy-modified polysiloxane coatings of the prior art have a high crosslinking density, they are not flexible enough; while the acrylic-modified polysiloxane coatings of the prior art have a low crosslinking density and have limited abrasion resistance and chemical resistance.

[0010] Thus, the present disclosure provides novel polysiloxane-based coating compositions that are improved in at least one of the following aspects: flexibility, weatherability, corrosion resistance, adhesion, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance. Summary of the invention

[0011] The present disclosure provides a novel polysiloxane-based coating composition. According to a first embodiment, the present disclosure provides a polysiloxane-based coating composition comprising a polysiloxane having the following formula:

[0012]

[0013] Non-aromatic epoxide resins having greater than one 1,2-epoxy group / molecule and an epoxy equivalent weight of 100-5000;

[0014] Multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomers; and

[0015] A curing system comprising at least one alkoxy-functional aminosilane. According to the polysiloxane formula, each R1 is hydroxyl or an alkyl, aryl, or alkoxy group having up to 6 carbon atoms, each R2 is independently hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group having up to 6 carbon atoms, and wherein n is selected so that the molecular weight of the polysiloxane is 400-10,000.

[0016] The inventors of the present application have found that the use of a multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomer in a polysiloxane coating composition modified with a non-aromatic epoxy resin can further significantly improve the flexibility of the epoxy-modified polysiloxane coating while at least maintaining or even possibly improving the weather resistance, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, adhesion and other properties of the epoxy-modified polysiloxane coating.

[0017] In another embodiment, the present disclosure provides a polysiloxane-based coating composition comprising 12-65 wt % of a polysiloxane having the following formula I, based on the total weight of the coating composition:

[0018]

[0019] 8-30 wt% of a non-aromatic epoxide resin having greater than one 1,2-epoxy group / molecule and an epoxy equivalent weight of 100-5000; 1-12 wt% of a multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomer; up to 15 wt% of a cure accelerator; up to 15 wt% of a flexible epoxy resin based on a glycidyl ether of castor oil having an epoxy equivalent weight of 200-1000; and 5-40 wt% of a cure system comprising at least one alkoxy-functional aminosilane added in an amount sufficient to provide a ratio of amine equivalents to the sum of epoxy equivalents and double bond equivalents in the multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomer of 0.7:1.0 to 1.3:1.0 in the coating composition. According to the polysiloxane of formula I, each R1 is hydroxyl or an alkyl, aryl, or alkoxy group having up to 6 carbon atoms, each R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group having up to 6 carbon atoms, and wherein n is selected so that the molecular weight of the polysiloxane is 400-10,000.

[0020] In another embodiment, the present disclosure provides a coated substrate, wherein the substrate comprises at least one surface coated with the polysiloxane-based coating composition described herein.

[0021] In another embodiment, the present disclosure provides a method for protecting a substrate surface from the undesirable effects of one or more of chemicals, corrosion, and weathering by coating the surface with a coating composition prepared by a method comprising preparing a binder component, adding a curing system to the binder component to form a fully cured polysiloxane-based coating composition, and applying the coating composition to the substrate surface to be protected before the composition becomes fully cured. The resin composition comprises a polysiloxane having the following formula I:

[0022]

[0023] A non-aromatic epoxy resin containing more than one 1,2-epoxy group / molecule and an epoxy equivalent weight of 100-5000; and a multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomer. According to the polysiloxane formula, each R1 is a hydroxyl group or an alkyl, aryl, or alkoxy group having up to 6 carbon atoms, each R2 is a hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group having up to 6 carbon atoms, and wherein n is selected so that the molecular weight of the polysiloxane is 400-10000. The curing system comprises at least one alkoxy-functional aminosilane; and an optional curing accelerator. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0029] According to different embodiments, the present disclosure provides a kind of coating composition based on polysiloxane, which is suitable for coating surface and providing improved flexibility, chemical resistance, corrosion resistance and / or weather resistance. The coating based on polysiloxane can be advantageously formulated as a two-component or multi-component coating system, i.e. comprising a base component A (comprising at least a polysiloxane of formula I and a non-aromatic epoxide resin and a multifunctional (meth) acrylate monomer) and a curing system component B, wherein the composition of the combination reacts to form a crosslinked polysiloxane polymer structure. In certain embodiments, the coating composition may further include a flexible epoxy resin, such as a glycidyl ether based on castor oil. In other embodiments, the coating composition may optionally include a curing accelerator, which includes at least one metal catalyst.

[0030] Regarding the base component A, it may, for example, comprise a blend of a polysiloxane of formula I, a non-aromatic epoxide resin, and an optional organooxysilane. Different embodiments of the base component A include, but are not limited to, those polysiloxanes having formula I:

[0031]

[0032] Wherein each R1 can be selected from hydroxyl and alkyl, aryl, and alkoxy with up to 6 carbon atoms. Each R2 can be selected from hydrogen and alkyl and aryl with up to 6 carbon atoms. In formula I, integer n can be selected so that the molecular weight of polysiloxane is 400-10000 dalton. In a specific embodiment, R1 and R2 can include a group with less than or equal to 6 carbon atoms, for example, to promote the rapid hydrolysis of polysiloxane, and the reaction can be driven by the volatility of the alcohol product of the hydrolysis. In certain embodiments, R1 and R2 groups with more than 6 carbon atoms can weaken the hydrolysis of polysiloxane, which is attributed to the relatively low volatility of each alcohol analog. Methoxy, ethoxy and silanol functional polysiloxane (it has selected n so that the molecular weight is 400-2000) can be used in specific embodiments to prepare the coating composition of the present disclosure.

[0033] According to various embodiments, suitable methoxy functional polysiloxanes may include: DOWSIL 3074, commercially available from Dow Corp.; or Silres IC 232 and IC 235, commercially available from Wacker. Silanol functional polysiloxanes include, but are not limited to, Dow's DC840, Z6018, Q1-2530 and 6-2230 intermediates.

[0034] According to various embodiments, the coating composition may contain 12-65 wt% of the polysiloxane of formula I based on its total weight. In other embodiments, the coating composition may contain 18-55 wt% of the polysiloxane of formula I. In one embodiment, the coating composition may contain about 20-45 wt% of the polysiloxane of formula I. In another preferred embodiment, at least 80 wt%, preferably at least 90 wt%, or more preferably at least 95 or 98 to 100 wt% of all polysiloxane components in the coating composition are composed of polysiloxane of formula I.

[0035] Suitable epoxy resins that can be used to form coatings of embodiments of the present disclosure include at least non-aromatic epoxy resins containing greater than one and in certain embodiments two 1,2-epoxy groups / molecule. As used herein, the terms "epoxide resin" and "epoxy resin" are used interchangeably. In specific embodiments, the epoxy resin can be a liquid, rather than a solid, and the epoxy equivalent weight can be 100-5000, 100-2000 in other embodiments, and 100-500 in still other embodiments, and the reactivity is about 2.

[0036] Preferably, the non-aromatic epoxy resin is a compound having one or more 1,2-epoxy groups at the end or side of a cyclic, linear or branched aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon group. Here, preferred is a non-aromatic hydrogenated epoxy resin, wherein the cyclic, linear or branched aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon group is hydrogenated or saturated. In another preferred embodiment, the cyclic, linear or branched aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon group is composed of C and H and does not contain heteroatoms such as O, N or P. In addition, the cyclic, linear or branched hydrocarbon group can, for example, have 2-500, such as 5-300 or 200 or 100 carbon atoms.

[0037] In certain preferred embodiments, the epoxide resin can be a non-aromatic hydrogenated epoxy resin, such as a non-aromatic hydrogenated cyclohexanedimethanol, a diglycidyl ether of a hydrogenated bisphenol A type epoxide resin, such as Eponex 1510, and Eponex 1513 (hydrogenated bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin epoxy resin), commercially available from Hexion; Santolink LSE-120, commercially available from Monsanto, Springfield, MA.; Epodil 757 (cyclohexanedimethanol diglycidyl ether), commercially available from Pacific Anchor, Allentown, PA; Araldite XUGY 358 and PY 327, commercially available from CibaGeigy, Hawthorne, NY; Epirez 505, commercially available from Rhone-Poulenc, Lousiville, KY; Aroflint 393 and 607, commercially available from Reichold, Pensacola, FL; and ERL4221, commercially available from Union Carbide, Tarrytown, NY. Other suitable non-aromatic epoxy resins may include EP-4080E (cycloaliphatic epoxy resin), commercially available from Adeka, Japan; ST-3000, commercially available from KUKDO CHEMICAL; DER 732 and DER 736. In a specific embodiment, the epoxy resin may be EP-4080E. Such non-aromatic hydrogenated epoxide resins may be desirable due to their limited reactivity of about 2, which promotes the formation of linear epoxy polymers and prevents the formation of crosslinked epoxy polymers. Without intending to be limited to a specific explanation, it is believed that the resulting linear epoxy polymer (which is formed by adding a curing agent to the epoxy resin) is at least partially responsible for the enhanced weatherability of such a composition.

[0038] In the coating composition according to the present invention, it is necessary to use a non-aromatic epoxy resin because, compared with other epoxy resins or epoxy acrylic resins, the non-aromatic epoxy resin exhibits more excellent weather resistance, no yellowing, suitable viscosity and curing speed.

[0039] According to various embodiments, the coating composition may include 8-30 wt %, preferably 10-25 wt %, more preferably 10-22 wt % of a non-aromatic epoxy resin, more preferably a non-aromatic hydrogenated epoxy resin, based on the total weight of the coating composition.

[0040] The coating composition of the present invention must also contain a multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomer. When formulated into a two-component or multi-component composition, the multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomer is contained in the base component A. Here, the multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomer refers to a non-polymeric monomer compound having at least 2, 3 or 4 or more (meth)acrylate groups. Advantageously, the multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomer suitable for the present invention is a monomer compound having at least 2, 3 or 4 or more (meth)acrylate groups at the end or side of the skeleton composed of a cyclic, linear or branched aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon group, wherein the aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon group is composed of C and H atoms and optionally one or more, such as 2 or 3 heteroatoms such as O, preferably without heteroatoms. In some suitable cases, the H atom may also be substituted by, for example, halogen.

[0041] Typically, the multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomers can be formed by esterification of aliphatic or alicyclic alcohols corresponding to aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon groups as defined above with (meth)acrylic acid. In addition, advantageously, the multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomers suitable for the present invention do not have additional functional groups, such as amino, ester, carbonyl, carbamate and epoxy groups, in addition to the (meth)acrylate functional groups. Therefore, it is obvious that, according to such a definition, for example, epoxy (meth)acrylates or polyurethane (meth)acrylates based on aromatic epoxy resins are not multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomers according to the present invention.

[0042] Examples of suitable multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomers include trimethylolpropane tri(meth)acrylate, tripropylene glycol tri(meth)acrylate, dipropylene glycol di(meth)acrylate, butanediol di(meth)acrylate, cyclohexanedimethanol di(meth)acrylate, hexanediol di(meth)acrylate, glycerol tri(meth)acrylate, pentaerythritol tetra(meth)acrylate, ditrimethylolpropane tri(meth)acrylate, neopentyl glycol di(meth)acrylate, neopentyl glycol propoxylate di(meth)acrylate, ethoxylated trimethylolpropane tri(meth)acrylate, and propoxylated glycerol tri(meth)acrylate.

[0043] Preferred multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomers include hexanediol diacrylates, such as 1,6HEXANEDIOL DIACRYLATE (available from ALLNEX), AGISYN 2816 (available from DSM), SR238 (available from ARKEMAINC), PHOTOMER 4017 (available from IGM RESINS); trimethylolpropane triacrylate, such as available from Cognis, Exton, Pa. under the trade name Photomer 4006; neopentyl glycol propoxylate diacrylate, such as available from IGM under the trade names Photomer 4126 and 4127; ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate, such as available from IGMs under the trade name Photomer 4129; and propoxylated glycerol triacrylate, such as available from IGM under the trade name Photomer 4094.

[0044] According to different embodiments, the coating composition comprises 1-12 wt%, preferably 2-8 wt%, for example 4 or 7 wt% of multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomers based on the total weight of the coating composition. Preferably, the coating composition of the present invention does not comprise epoxy (meth)acrylate and polyurethane (meth)acrylate (whose molecules contain acrylic functional groups and urethane bonds).

[0045] Different embodiments of the coating composition also include a curing system. When formulated as a two-component or more component coating composition, the curing system is included in component B. According to the present invention, the curing system includes one or more alkoxy-functional aminosilanes. In certain embodiments, the average alkoxy functionality value of one or more alkoxy-functional aminosilanes can be, for example, 2.0 or more, or 2.2 or more, or 2.5 or more. In a specific embodiment, based on the total weight of the coating composition, the curing system can account for 5-30% by weight of the coating composition, and in other embodiments, 10-20% by weight of the coating composition, for example, about 14% by weight. In certain embodiments, the addition amount of the curing system is sufficient to provide a ratio of 0.7:1.0 to 1.3:1.0 of the sum of the amine equivalents and the double bond equivalents in the epoxy equivalent and the multifunctional (meth) acrylate monomer in the coating composition, and in other embodiments, the ratio is 0.95:1.00 to 1.05:1.00.

[0046] In one embodiment, the alkoxy-functional aminosilane may comprise at least one dialkoxy-functional aminosilane and / or at least one trialkoxy-functional aminosilane, preferably a trialkoxy-functional aminosilane.

[0047] According to these embodiments, the at least one dialkoxy-functional aminosilane may have the following structure:

[0052] Wherein R5 is selected from following difunctional organic group: aryl, alkyl, dialkyl aryl, alkoxyalkyl, alkylaminoalkyl or cycloalkyl, each R6 is independently alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl or hydroxyalkoxyalkyl containing less than 6 carbon atoms. According to specific embodiments, each R6 group can be independently selected from (C1-C6) alkyl and each R5 is independently selected from (C1-C6) alkyl and (C1-C6) alkylamino (C1-C6) alkyl.

[0117] Performance Testing

[0118] The resulting polysiloxane coating mixture was drawn down onto a glass strip using a drawdown with a 150 μm opening, and the coating was tested for drying (ASTM D1640).

[0119] use The obtained siloxane coating composition was sprayed onto an aluminum plate with a spray gun, and the coating was allowed to fully cure at room temperature. The coating was tested for flexibility (conical mandrel, ASTM D522) and weather resistance (xenon lamp artificial accelerated aging, ISO 4892-2). The specimen was dried at 23.3°C / 50%RH for 14 days when testing flexibility.

[0120] The gloss change at 60 degrees (ISO 2813) was also measured at the beginning, 10 weeks, and 20 weeks of artificial accelerated weathering.

[0121] The obtained polysiloxane coating composition was applied to a glass plate, and the coating was allowed to completely cure at room temperature, and the abrasion resistance of the coating was tested (ASTM D 4060, CS17 wheel, load 1 KG, abrasion resistance 1000 revolutions).

[0122] The obtained polysiloxane coating composition was applied to a sandblasted Sa2.5 steel plate coated with 60 microns of epoxy zinc-rich primer and 140 microns of epoxy intermediate paint, and the coating was completely cured at room temperature (23°C). The 7-day chemical resistance (ISO 2812-4) and 3000-hour salt spray resistance (ASTM B117) of the coating were tested, and the blistering (ASTM D714), rusting (ASTM D1654), and rust spread at the scribe line (ASTM D1654) of the test plate surface were evaluated. In ASTM D 714, the numbers 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, and 0 are used to represent the size of the blistering (10 (or none) means no blistering, and the smaller the number, the larger the blistering), and the letters D, MD, M, and F are used to represent the frequency of blistering (Dense, Medium dense, Medium, Few). The test results are given in Table 3.

[0123] This data demonstrates that silicone coating compositions made in accordance with the present disclosure exhibit improved flexibility as measured by tapered mandrel elongation, and possess excellent weathering, abrasion, and chemical resistance, as compared to comparative prior art compositions.

[0124] Table 3: Coated Panel Test Results

[0125]
