Description

Technical Field

[0001] The invention relates to a battery device comprising at least a gas-tight housing enclosing a cuboid volume and at least one battery cell arranged in the housing, the battery cell having electrode films stacked or wound on one another; the battery cell having a main expansion direction depending on operation or aging. Background Art

[0002] A battery cell is an electrical storage device that is used, for example, in a motor vehicle to store electrical energy. In particular, for example, a motor vehicle has an electric motor for driving the motor vehicle, wherein the electric motor can be driven by the electrical energy stored in the battery cell.

[0003] For example, battery cells having a liquid electrolyte or a solid electrolyte (solid state batteries) are known.

[0004] The battery arrangement comprises in particular one or more battery cells which are electrically connected in series or in parallel and arranged in a housing. The battery cells can also be arranged together and thus form a battery module.

[0005] The cells of a battery change their volume during charging and discharging and / or due to aging during the service life. During the service life of a lithium-ion cell (prismatic, pouch-shaped or round cell), a thickness growth occurs within the cell due to the cycles. This thickness growth is enhanced along the normal vector of the cell, i.e. transversely to the plane of the electrode membrane. In addition, a length change occurs, but the length change is much smaller and can therefore be ignored. At present, conventional hard shell containers for lithium-ion cells do not allow or only allow very small translation compensation.

[0006] The problem of thickness growth is also amplified by new battery cell technologies such as solid-state batteries. For this battery cell technology, significant volume changes or translational growth occur in particular due to volume changes in the anode. In the discharged state of the battery cell, there is a very small amount of lithium on the anode, and in the charged state there is a very large amount of lithium. For some anode materials, the difference in quantity can reach about 100% of the volume change between the charged and discharged states. In order to additionally maintain the boundary layer or contact surface of the individual layers in the battery cell, it must be permanently mechanically clamped. Therefore, the technical problem is to achieve mechanical clamping of the battery cell and at the same time ensure translation compensation. The battery cell is preferably arranged in the housing in a clamped manner at every point in time, in order to, for example, prevent mechanical damage to the battery cell due to relative movement relative to the housing. However, it should be noted here that the preload does not exceed the limit value. If translation compensation is not provided, there will be deficiencies in battery cell performance and battery failure in the worst case.

[0007] During the operation of the battery, in particular, volume changes must be compensated or compensated. For this purpose, it is known to clamp the battery cells in the battery module using pressure pads or screw connections via the end plates of the module.

[0008] All currently known systems must be readjusted in the event of a discharge during operation of the motor vehicle. The equipment expenditure for compensating for volume changes can be very expensive and prone to errors. In particular, elastic elements or, for example, hydraulic devices must be provided only for large volume changes.

[0009] Patent document DE 10 2015 010 259 A1 discloses a cell housing for accommodating an electrochemically active electrode membrane arrangement for a single cell designed as a cuboid hard-shell cell. In order to compensate for changes in the length of the cell stack, the narrow sides of the cell housing have, at least in sections, a contour that enlarges the surface, for example a sawtooth contour, a wavy contour or a projection in the form of an obtuse bend. In the event of a change in the volume of the cell, the contour deforms and can thus compensate for the increased distance between the fixed housing components.

[0010] Patent document US 2018 / 0277824 A1 discloses a battery having a housing and a method for manufacturing the same, wherein the housing has a safety mechanism that prevents current from being transmitted from the battery when the internal pressure in the housing is exceeded. Summary of the invention

[0011] The technical problem to be solved by the present invention is to at least partially solve the problems mentioned in the prior art. In particular, a battery device is proposed that can compensate for volume changes. In this case, larger volume changes should also be compensated reliably. In this case, the cost and assembly expenditure should be as low as possible.

[0012] The technical problem is solved by the battery device according to the invention. Advantageous expansion designs are found in other technical solutions. The features mentioned individually in the present invention can be combined with each other in a technically meaningful manner and can be supplemented by explanatory facts in the description and / or details in the drawings, which show other implementation variants of the present invention.

[0013] A battery device is proposed, which comprises at least a housing enclosing a cuboid volume, designed to be gastight, and at least one battery cell arranged in the housing, the battery cell having electrode films stacked or wound on each other. The battery cell has at least one main expansion direction depending on operation or aging. The housing has a first, shape-fixed housing part and a second, deformable housing part connected to each other. At least:

[0014] The second housing element comprises a bag-like membrane; or

[0015] at least one second housing part connects at least two first housing parts beyond the edge, the first housing parts being arranged on side faces of the cuboid volume, the side faces being arranged adjacent to one another at the edge of the volume; or

[0016] The first connection between the second housing member and the first housing member gradually fails as the battery cell expands; or

[0017] The at least one first housing part performs a rotational movement relative to the battery cell when the battery cell expands;

[0018] This makes it possible to compensate for the expansion of the battery cell at least (or only) in a main expansion direction and ensure gas tightness.

[0019] In a known manner, the electrode membranes comprise in particular at least one anode, a cathode and a separator membrane (which may also be a solid electrolyte), which are stacked on top of one another and form a battery cell.

[0020] Depending on operation or aging, the battery cell has a main expansion direction, along which the battery cell expands relatively more strongly than in other directions. The expansion in the main expansion direction is responsible in particular for a large part of the change in volume of the battery cell or the enlarged housing.

[0021] The dimensionally stable first housing part is, for example, a component of a known so-called hard shell (rigid housing) of a battery cell, ie, the first housing part does not deform or deforms only insignificantly during the intended use of the battery device.

[0022] The deformable second housing part is used in particular to compensate, ie compensate, for volume changes or expansions of the battery cell by deformation. Thus, even if the volume of the battery cell changes, a gas-tight sealing of the battery cell can be ensured because the second housing part follows the position of the first housing part that changes due to the volume change.

[0023] Each battery cell has, for example, a certain volume, depending on the energy content stored therein, which changes between a small volume at a low energy content or a low SOC (state of charge) and a large volume at a high energy content or a high SOC. The volume change occurs in particular substantially in the region of at least one anode of the battery cell. The anode, which is composed, for example, of graphite or metal or, in the case of lithium-ion batteries, of metallic lithium, changes its volume by the insertion of lithium ions or the deposition of pure metallic lithium.

[0024] The anode is in particular designed as an electrode film in a planar manner and extends with its largest surface transversely to the main expansion direction. The volume change is particularly effective essentially in the main expansion direction, that is, the thickness of the anode changes depending on the anode material. Depending on the anode material used, the volume change can be between 6% and 100%. In terms of the battery cell, this means in particular that the battery cell can have a volume change of between 5% and 95%.

[0025] In the present case, different properties of the battery arrangement are proposed, which can each be applied or used individually or at least in combination with one or more further properties.

[0026] According to a first configuration, the second housing part may include a bag-like film or be configured as a bag-like film.

[0027] Pouch films are known deformable housing parts that are used as housings for so-called pouch cells (or soft pack cells). Pouch films are composite materials that include, for example, plastic and aluminum. Therefore, in the present case, it is particularly recommended to construct the second housing part by means of pouch films.

[0028] Alternatively, the second housing part can include the thin-walled design of the first housing part.

[0029] In particular, the second housing part can be arranged or designed in an elastically deformable manner, so that the deformation of the second housing part is at least partially reversible. In particular, however, the second housing part can be (only) plastically deformable at least partially or completely. In particular, a minimum force or a minimum moment can be required to deform the second housing part, so that the first housing part can be arranged with a prestress relative to the battery cell by the second housing part.

[0030] According to a second design, at least one second housing part connects at least two first housing parts beyond the edge, the first housing parts being arranged on the side faces of a cuboid volume, the side faces being arranged adjacent to each other on the edge of the volume. For example, the first housing part is arranged on a first side face, wherein the first side face extends transversely to the main expansion direction. Therefore, the first side face is displaced to the greatest extent compared to the other side faces due to the volume change of the battery cell. The second side face extends, for example, parallel to the main expansion direction and is displaced to a relatively small extent when the volume of the battery cell changes.

[0031] That is, if a first housing part is arranged on a first side and a further first housing part is arranged on a second side, the housing part arranged on the first side is displaced relative to the housing part arranged on the second side. As a result, the connection point between the second housing part arranged there and the first housing part is also displaced relative to each other. This relative movement is compensated or absorbed by the second housing part, thereby ensuring a gas-tight design of the housing.

[0032] According to the third design solution, the first connection portion between the second housing member and the first housing member gradually fails as the expansion of the battery cell increases.

[0033] The first connection is designed, for example, in the form of a known sealing seam. The sealing seam ensures a gas-tight connection between the two housing parts, for example, by welding.

[0034] For example, due to the gradual failure of the first connection, the prestressing of the battery cell produced by the second housing part can still be maintained despite the expansion, since the volume of the housing can thereby be increased in stages.

[0035] A gradual failure can be achieved, for example, by designing the sealing seam with so-called predetermined breaking points which are successively loaded and gradually destroyed due to increasing expansion of the battery cells and increasing deformation of the associated second housing part.

[0036] According to a fourth embodiment, at least one first housing part performs a rotational movement relative to the battery cell when the battery cell expands. The rotational movement is enabled by a second housing part connected to the first housing part, which compensates for the position change of the first housing part by deformation.

[0037] In particular, the at least one second housing part is connected to the at least one first housing part in a gas-tight manner via at least one sealing seam. Preferably, all housing parts are connected to one another via sealing seams.

[0038] In particular, the at least one second housing part and the first housing part are arranged at least partially overlapping one another, wherein the housing parts are connected to one another in the region of the overlap, for example by a sealing seam.

[0039] In particular, according to the second embodiment, the second housing part connected to the first housing part beyond the edge has an unconnected section extending beyond the edge between the connection to the first housing part. The deformation of the second housing part occurs in particular only in this section.

[0040] According to a third embodiment, the first connection is arranged on a first side of the first housing part, and the second housing part extends from the first connection around an end region of the first housing part to an opposite second side and is connected to the first housing part in a gas-tight manner via the second connection. This arrangement ensures that only the first connection is gradually disintegrated and thus allows expansion of the battery cell while ensuring the gas-tightness of the housing.

[0041] In particular, according to the third embodiment, during the expansion of the battery cell and during the gradual failure of the first connection portion due to the expansion of the battery cell, the second housing part gradually continues to deform.

[0042] In particular, according to the fourth configuration, the first housing part that performs the rotational movement is rotated about a tilting axis that is arranged on a side surface of the volume and is stationary relative to the side surface.

[0043] In particular, the tilting axis is arranged at the first side surface. In particular, the tilting axis extends parallel to the first side surface.

[0044] In particular, the first housing part is supported relative to the battery cell via the tilting axis on a dimensionally stable support plate. The support plate can keep local surface pressures caused by the rolling movement of the rotating first housing part low, so that components of the battery cell are not damaged.

[0045] In particular, during the expansion of the battery cell, the housing maintains a constant clamping or pretensioning of the battery cell at least relative to the main expansion direction.

[0046] In particular, at least one elastically deformable spring element is arranged at least between the two first housing parts, so that during the expansion of the battery cell, the housing maintains a constant clamping of the battery cell at least with respect to the main expansion direction. For example, a tension spring can be used as the spring element, which connects first side surfaces, in particular opposite to each other, in the housing.

[0047] In particular, a failure point with reduced strength is arranged or provided in the second housing part, but preferably (only) in the first housing part, so that in the event of "thermal runaway", i.e. uncontrolled heating of the battery cells, emergency ventilation of the battery cells through the housing or the failure point to the environment is possible.

[0048] In particular, the battery device is installed or used in a motor vehicle in order to provide electrical energy, in particular for a traction drive.

[0049] In particular, the use of indefinite articles ("a", "an") in this application should be understood as such and not as a numeral. Therefore, the terms or components introduced accordingly should be understood as occurring at least once and in particular also occurring multiple times.

[0050] It should be noted that the numbers used here ("first", "second", etc.) are primarily (only) used to distinguish between multiple identical objects, dimensions or processes and are therefore not in particular mandatory for the correlation and / or order of these objects, dimensions or processes with each other. [0064] Figure 1 A section through a battery arrangement 1 according to a first embodiment variant is shown in a side view. Figure 2 The side view shows the expanded state according to Figure 1 The following describes the cross section of the battery device 1. Figure 1 and Figure 2 .

[0065] The battery device 1 comprises a housing 3 of gas-tight design, which surrounds a cuboid volume 2 and at least one battery cell 4 arranged therein, which has electrode films 5 stacked on top of each other. The battery cell 4 has a main expansion direction 6 as a function of operation or aging. The housing 3 comprises a first housing part 7 of fixed shape connected to each other and a deformable second housing part 8. The second housing part 8 comprises a bag-shaped film (according to a first embodiment). The second housing part 8 can compensate for the expansion 13 of the battery cell 4 in the main expansion direction 6 and ensure gas tightness.

[0066] The deformable second housing part 8 serves to compensate, i.e. compensate, for volume changes or expansions 13 of the battery cells 4 by means of deformation. Thus, even if the volume 2 of the battery cells 4 changes, a gas-tight sealing of the battery cells 4 can be ensured, since the second housing part 8 follows the position of the first housing part 7 that changes due to the volume change.

[0067] The second housing part 8 is arranged or designed in an elastically deformable manner so that the deformation of the second housing part 8 is at least partially reversible. Minimal force or minimum moment is required to deform the second housing part 8 so that the first housing part 7 is arranged prestressed relative to the battery cell 4 by the second housing part 8.

[0068] The second housing part 8 and the first housing part 7 are each arranged partially overlapping one another, wherein the housing parts 7 , 8 are connected to one another in the region of the overlap by a sealing seam 15 .

[0069] Figure 3 A section through a battery arrangement 1 according to a second embodiment variant is shown in a side view. Figure 4 The side view shows the expanded state according to Figure 3 The following describes the cross section of the battery device 1. Figure 3 and Figure 4 . Please refer to Figure 1 and Figure 2 Description.

[0070] According to a second embodiment variant (second design), at least two first housing parts 7 are connected to each other by a second housing part 8 extending beyond the edge 9, which are arranged on the side faces 10, 11 of the cuboid volume 2, which are arranged adjacent to each other on the edge 9 of the volume 2 or the battery cell 4. In this case, the first housing part 7 is arranged on the first side face 10, wherein the first side face 10 extends transversely to the main expansion direction 6. The first side face 10 is displaced to the greatest extent by the volume change of the battery cell 4 compared to the other side faces 11. The second side face 11 extends parallel to the main expansion direction 6 and is displaced to a relatively small extent when the volume of the battery cell 4 changes. The second housing parts 8 arranged on the second side face 11 are connected to each other by sealing elements 27. The deformability of the sealing element 27 is not particularly necessary.

[0071] The first housing part 7 arranged on the first side 10 is displaced relative to the first housing part 7 arranged on the second side 11. As a result, the connection points between the second housing part 8 arranged there and the first housing part 7 are also displaced relative to each other. This relative movement is compensated or absorbed by the second housing part 8, thereby ensuring a gas-tight design of the housing 3.

[0072] The second housing part 8 connected to the first housing part 7 beyond the edge 9 has, between the connections to the first housing part 7 designed as sealing seams 15, unconnected sections 17 extending beyond the edge 9. The second housing part 8 is deformed only in the section 17.

[0073] Figure 5 A section through a battery arrangement 1 according to a third embodiment variant is shown in a side view. Figure 6 The side view shows the expanded state according to Figure 5 The following describes the cross section of the battery device 1. Figure 5 and Figure 6 . Please refer to Figures 1 to 4 Description.

[0074] According to the third embodiment variant (third design), the first connection 12 between the second housing part 8 and the first housing part 7 gradually fails as the expansion 13 of the battery cell 4 increases.

[0075] The first connection 12 is designed in the form of a known sealing seam 15 .

[0076] Due to the gradual failure of the first connection 12 , the prestressing of the battery cell 4 produced by the second housing part 8 can still be maintained despite the development of the expansion 13 , since the volume 2 of the housing 3 can be enlarged in stages.

[0077] A gradual failure can be achieved by designing the sealing seams 15 with so-called predetermined breaking points 25 which are successively loaded and gradually destroyed due to the increasing expansion 13 of the battery cells 4 and the associated increasing deformation of the second housing part 8 .

[0078] The first connection 12 is arranged on a first side 18 of the first housing part 7, and the second housing part 8 extends from the first connection 12 around an end region 19 of the first housing part 7 to an opposite second side 20 and is connected there to the first housing part 7 in a gas-tight manner via a second connection 21. This arrangement ensures that only the first connection 12 is gradually disintegrated and thus allows an expansion 13 of the battery cell 4 while ensuring the gas-tightness of the housing 3.

[0079] The second housing part 8 gradually continues to deform during the expansion 13 of the battery cell 4 , while the first connecting part 12 gradually fails due to the expansion 13 of the battery cell 4 .

[0080] Figure 7 A battery arrangement 1 according to a fourth embodiment variant is shown in a side view in section. Figure 8 The side view shows the expanded state according to Figure 7 The following describes the cross section of the battery device 1. Figure 7 and Figure 8 . Please refer to Figures 1 to 6 Description.

[0081] An elastically deformable spring element 24 is arranged between two mutually opposite first housing parts 7, so that the housing 3 maintains a constant clamping of the battery cell 4 relative to the main expansion direction 6 during the expansion 13 of the battery cell 4. A tension spring is provided as the spring element 24, which connects the first opposite side surfaces 10 in the housing 3 to each other. The first housing parts 7 are connected by Figures 1 to 6 The embodiments of the first housing part 7 and the second housing part 8 shown in FIG. 8 are connected to one another.

[0082] Fig. 9 The side view shows a section through a battery arrangement 1 according to a fifth embodiment variant. Fig.10 The side view shows the expanded state according to Fig. 9 A cross section of the battery device 1 is shown. Fig.11 The side view shows a section through a battery arrangement 1 according to a sixth embodiment variant. Fig.12 The side view shows the expanded state according to Fig.11 The following describes the cross section of the battery device 1. Figures 9 to 12 . Please refer to Figures 1 to 8 Description.

[0083] In the fifth embodiment variant (fourth design), in the event of expansion 13 of the battery cell 4, the first housing part 7 respectively performs a rotational movement 14 relative to the battery cell 4. The rotational movement 14 is made possible by the second housing part 8 connected to the first housing part 7, which compensates for the position change of the first housing part 7 by deformation.

[0084] The first housing part 7 , which executes the rotational movement 14 , rotates about a tilting axis 22 , which is arranged on the first side surface 10 of the volume 2 and is stationary relative to the first side surface 10 .

[0085] The tilting axis 22 is arranged at the first side surface 10. The tilting axis 22 extends parallel to the first side surface 10.

[0086] According to the sixth embodiment variant, the first housing part 7 is supported on a dimensionally stable support plate 23 relative to the battery cell 4 via the tilt axis 22. The support plate 23 can keep the local surface pressure caused by the rolling movement of the rotating first housing part 7 low, so that the components of the battery cell 4 are not damaged.

[0087] Failure points 26 with reduced strength are arranged or provided only in first housing part 8 , so that in the event of a “thermal runaway”, ie uncontrolled heating of battery cells 4 , emergency ventilation of battery cells 4 to the environment via housing 3 or failure points 26 is possible.
