[0002] This patent application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 900,406, filed by NAM et al. on September 13, 2019, entitled “SIMULTANEOUS CONTROLINFORMATION RECEPTION FROM SOURCE AND TARGET CELLS DURING HANDOVER,” and U.S. Patent Application No. 16 / 993,584, filed by NAM et al. on August 14, 2020, entitled “SIMULTANEOUS CONTROL INFORMATION RECEPTION FROM SOURCE AND TARGET CELLS DURING HANDOVER,” each of which is assigned to the assignee of this application. Background Art

[0003] The following relates generally to wireless communications, and more particularly to simultaneously receiving control information from a source cell and a target cell during a handover.

[0004] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content, such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcasting, etc. These systems may be able to support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power). Examples of such multiple access systems include fourth generation (4G) systems (such as long term evolution (LTE) systems, advanced LTE (LTE-A) systems, or LTE-A Pro systems), and fifth generation (5G) systems that may be referred to as new radio (NR) systems. These systems may use various technologies, such as code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), or discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM). A wireless multiple access communication system may include several base stations or network access nodes, each of which simultaneously supports the communication of multiple communication devices, which may be referred to as user equipment (UE).

[0005] Overview

[0006] The described technology relates to improved methods, systems, devices and apparatuses that support simultaneous reception of control information from a source cell and a target cell during a handover. In general, aspects of the described technology improve the reception of control information by a user equipment (UE) from both a source base station and a target base station during a handover procedure, such as a connect-before-break (MBB) handover procedure. For example, the UE may be connected to a source base station and mobility management functions may be implemented to ensure that the UE maintains connectivity. This may, for example, result in a handover of the UE from a source base station to a target base station due to the mobility of the UE. In some examples, the handover procedure may be an MBB handover procedure, in which the UE is connected to both a source base station and a target base station at least to some extent during the handover procedure. For example, the UE may transmit or otherwise provide a UE capability message to the source base station (e.g., during initial connection establishment), the UE capability message carrying or conveying an indication that the UE supports a dual base station resource allocation scheme during the MBB handover procedure. This may include an indication that the UE supports the division of a maximum number of UE-supported control channel monitoring opportunities between the source base station and the target base station. This division may be symmetric or asymmetric. Thus, the UE may identify (e.g., be configured with) a first set of control channel monitoring resources for the source base station and a second set of control channel monitoring resources for the target base station. In general, the control channel monitoring resources in the first group and the second group may be limited so that the accumulated control channel monitoring resources do not exceed the maximum number of control channel monitoring resources supported by the UE. Thus, the UE may receive control information from the source base station during the first set of control channel monitoring resources (or using the first set of control channel monitoring resources) during the MBB switching procedure, and receive control information from the target base station during the second set of control channel monitoring resources (or using the second set of control channel monitoring resources). A dual base station resource allocation scheme supported by and configured for the UE may enable a UE (e.g., a low-end UE, a wearable device, etc.) that supports a reduced number of control channel monitoring resources during the MBB switching procedure.

[0007] A method for wireless communication at a UE is described. The method may include transmitting a UE capability message indicating support for a dual base station control resource allocation scheme during an MBB handover procedure from a source base station to a target base station, wherein the dual base station control resource allocation scheme includes partitioning a maximum number of control channel monitoring resources supported by the UE between the source base station and the target base station; identifying a first set of control channel monitoring resources for the source base station and a second set of control channel monitoring resources for the target base station based on the dual base station control resource allocation scheme; and receiving control information from the source base station during the first set of control channel monitoring resources and receiving control information from the target base station during the second set of control channel monitoring resources during the MBB handover procedure.

[0048] Detailed Description

[0049] The wireless communication system may use a mobility management function to manage connectivity between a user equipment (UE) and at least one base station or cell. For example, due to the mobility of the UE, the deteriorated channel conditions between the UE and the source base station, etc., the mobility management function may initiate or otherwise support a handover procedure of the UE from the source base station to the target base station. Some handover procedures may be considered as a break-before-make (BBM) handover procedure, in which the UE unexpectedly loses connectivity with the source base station before (or during) establishing connectivity to the target base station. Other handover procedures may be considered as a connect-before-break (MBB) handover procedure, in which the UE maintains at least some degree of connectivity to both the source base station and the target base station during the handover procedure or at least a portion of the handover procedure. For example, during the MBB handover procedure, in addition to the channels configured by the source base station for the UE, the UE may also be configured with various channels (e.g., control channels, data channels, etc.) with the target base station. However, this approach may be problematic because during the handover procedure, some UEs may not be able to maintain full connectivity with both the source base station and the target base station on all available resources. For example, some UEs (e.g., low-end UEs, wearable devices, etc.) may not support simultaneous monitoring of each control channel monitoring resource from both the source base station and the target base station. Accordingly, various aspects of the described technology provide a mechanism that supports simultaneous reception of control information from both the source base station and the target base station during an MBB handover procedure.

[0050] Various aspects of the present disclosure are initially described in the context of a wireless communication system. In general, various aspects of the described technology provide various mechanisms to improve the UE so that control information can be received from both the source base station and the target base station during a handover procedure (such as an MBB handover procedure). For example, the UE may be connected to the source base station and a mobility management function is implemented to ensure that the UE maintains connectivity. This may, for example, result in the handover of the UE from the source base station to the target base station due to the mobility of the UE. In some examples, the handover procedure may be an MBB handover procedure, in which the UE is connected to both the source base station and the target base station at least to some extent during the handover procedure. For example, the UE may transmit or otherwise provide a UE capability message to the source base station (e.g., during an initial connection establishment procedure), which carries or conveys an indication that the UE supports a dual base station resource allocation scheme during the MBB handover procedure. This may include an indication that the UE supports dividing the number of control channel monitoring resources supported by the UE between the source base station and the target base station. This division may be symmetric or asymmetric. Accordingly, the UE may identify (e.g., be configured with) a first set of control channel monitoring resources for the source base station and a second set of control channel monitoring resources for the target base station. In general, the control channel monitoring resources in the first group and the second group can be limited so that the accumulated control channel monitoring resources do not exceed the maximum number of control channel monitoring resources supported by the UE. Accordingly, the UE can receive control information from the source base station during the first group of control channel monitoring resources (or using the first group of control channel monitoring resources) during the MBB switching procedure, and receive control information from the target base station during the second group of control channel monitoring resources (or using the second group of control channel monitoring resources). The dual base station resource allocation scheme supported by and configured for the UE can enable UEs (e.g., low-end UEs, wearable devices, etc.) that support a reduced number of control channel monitoring resources during the MBB switching procedure.

[0051] Aspects of the present disclosure are further illustrated and described by and with reference to apparatus diagrams, system diagrams, and flow diagrams related to simultaneously receiving control information from a source cell and a target cell during a handover.

[0052] Figure 1An example of a wireless communication system 100 that supports simultaneous reception of control information from a source cell and a target cell during a handover in accordance with various aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. The wireless communication system 100 includes a base station 105, a UE 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may be a long term evolution (LTE) network, an advanced LTE (LTE-A) network, an LTE-A Pro network, or a new radio (NR) network. In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may support enhanced broadband communications, ultra-reliable (e.g., mission-critical) communications, low latency communications, or communications with low-cost and low-complexity devices.

[0053] The base station 105 may communicate wirelessly with the UE 115 via one or more base station antennas. The base station 105 described herein may include or may be referred to by those skilled in the art as a base transceiver station, a radio base station, an access point, a radio transceiver, a Node B, an evolved Node B (eNB), a next generation Node B, or a Gigabit Node B (any of which may be referred to as a gNB), a Home Node B, a Home Evolved Node B, or some other suitable terminology. The wireless communication system 100 may include different types of base stations 105 (e.g., macro cell base stations or small cell base stations). The UE 115 described herein may be able to communicate with various types of base stations 105 and network equipment (including macro eNBs, small cell eNBs, gNBs, relay base stations, etc.).

[0054] Each base station 105 may be associated with a particular geographic coverage area 110 in which it supports communications with various UEs 115. Each base station 105 may provide communications coverage for a respective geographic coverage area 110 via a communications link 125, and the communications link 125 between the base station 105 and the UE 115 may utilize one or more carriers. The communications link 125 shown in the wireless communication system 100 may include an uplink transmission from the UE 115 to the base station 105, or a downlink transmission from the base station 105 to the UE 115. Downlink transmissions may also be referred to as forward link transmissions, and uplink transmissions may also be referred to as reverse link transmissions.

[0055] The geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105 may be divided into sectors that constitute a portion of the geographic coverage area 110, and each sector may be associated with a cellular cell. For example, each base station 105 may provide communication coverage for a macrocellular cell, a small cellular cell, a hotspot, or other types of cellular cells, or various combinations thereof. In some examples, the base station 105 may be mobile and therefore provide communication coverage for a mobile geographic coverage area 110. In some examples, different geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may overlap, and the overlapping geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may be supported by the same base station 105 or different base stations 105. The wireless communication system 100 may include, for example, a heterogeneous LTE / LTE-A / LTE-A Pro or NR network, in which different types of base stations 105 provide coverage for various geographic coverage areas 110.

[0056] The term "cell" refers to a logical communication entity used to communicate with base station 105 (e.g., on a carrier), and may be associated with an identifier to distinguish adjacent cells operating via the same or different carriers (e.g., physical cell identifier (PCID), virtual cell identifier (VCID)). In some examples, a carrier may support multiple cells, and different cells may be configured according to different protocol types that may provide access to different types of devices (e.g., machine type communication (MTC), narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT), enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), or others). In some cases, the term "cell" may refer to a portion (e.g., a sector) of a geographic coverage area 110 on which the logical entity operates.

[0057] Each UE 115 can be dispersed throughout the wireless communication system 100, and each UE 115 can be stationary or mobile. UE 115 can also be referred to as a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a handheld device, or a subscriber device, or some other suitable term, wherein "device" can also be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client. UE 115 can also be a personal electronic device, such as a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a tablet computer, a laptop computer, or a personal computer. In some examples, UE 115 can also refer to a wireless local loop (WLL) station, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, an Internet of Everything (IoE) device, or an MTC device, etc., which can be implemented in various items (such as electrical appliances, vehicles, meters, etc.).

[0058] Some UEs 115, such as MTC or IoT devices, may be low-cost or low-complexity devices and may provide automated communication between machines (e.g., via machine-to-machine (M2M) communication). M2M communication or MTC may refer to data communication technology that allows devices to communicate with each other or with a base station 105 without human intervention. In some examples, M2M communication or MTC may include communications from devices that integrate sensors or meters to measure or capture information and relay the information to a central server or application, which may utilize the information or present the information to a person interacting with the program or application. Some UEs 115 may be designed to collect information or implement automated behavior of machines. Examples of applications for MTC devices include: smart metering, inventory monitoring, water level monitoring, equipment monitoring, health care monitoring, field survival monitoring, weather and geographic event monitoring, queue management and tracking, remote security sensing, physical access control, and transaction-based commercial charging.

[0059] Some UEs 115 may be configured to employ a reduced power consumption mode of operation, such as half-duplex communication (e.g., a mode that supports unidirectional communication via transmission or reception but not simultaneous transmission and reception). In some examples, half-duplex communication may be performed with a reduced peak rate. Other power saving techniques for UE 115 include entering a power saving "deep sleep" mode when not engaged in active communications, or operating over a limited bandwidth (e.g., in accordance with narrowband communications). In some cases, UE 115 may be designed to support critical functions (e.g., mission critical functions), and the wireless communication system 100 may be configured to provide ultra-reliable communications for these functions.

[0060] In some cases, UE 115 may also be able to communicate directly with other UE 115 (e.g., using a peer-to-peer (P2P) or device-to-device (D2D) protocol). One or more UEs in a group of UEs 115 utilizing D2D communication may be within the geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105. Other UEs 115 in the group may be outside the geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105, or may not be able to receive transmissions from the base station 105 for other reasons. In some cases, each group of UEs 115 communicating via D2D communication may utilize a one-to-many (1:M) system, in which each UE 115 transmits to each other UE 115 in the group. In some cases, the base station 105 facilitates the scheduling of resources for D2D communication. In other cases, D2D communication is performed between each UE 115 without involving the base station 105.

[0061] The base stations 105 may communicate with the core network 130 and with each other. For example, the base stations 105 may interface with the core network 130 via a backhaul link 132 (e.g., via S1, N2, N3, or other interfaces). The base stations 105 may communicate with each other over a backhaul link 134 (e.g., via X2, Xn, or other interfaces) directly (e.g., directly between the base stations 105) or indirectly (e.g., via the core network 130).

[0062] The core network 130 may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 130 may be an evolved packet core (EPC), which may include at least one mobility management entity (MME), at least one serving gateway (S-GW), and at least one packet data network (PDN) gateway (P-GW). The MME may manage non-access layer (e.g., control plane) functions such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management of UEs 115 served by base stations 105 associated with the EPC. User IP packets may be delivered through the S-GW, which itself may be connected to the P-GW. The P-GW may provide IP address allocation and other functions. The P-GW may be connected to network operator IP services. Operator IP services may include access to the Internet, an intranet, an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS), or packet switched (PS) streaming services.

[0063] At least some network devices (such as base stations 105) may include subcomponents, such as access network entities, which may be examples of access node controllers (ANCs). Each access network entity may communicate with each UE 115 through a number of other access network transport entities, which may be referred to as radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmission / reception points (TRPs). In some configurations, the various functions of each access network entity or base station 105 may be distributed across various network devices (e.g., radio heads and access network controllers) or merged into a single network device (e.g., base station 105).

[0064] The wireless communication system 100 may operate using one or more frequency bands, typically in the range of 300 megahertz (MHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz). In general, the 300 MHz to 3 GHz region is referred to as the ultra-high frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the wavelengths are in the range of from about 1 decimeter to 1 meter long. UHF waves may be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features. However, these waves may penetrate various structures sufficiently for macro cells to provide services to UEs 115 located indoors. Transmission of UHF waves may be associated with smaller antennas and shorter ranges (e.g., less than 100 km) compared to transmission using lower frequencies and longer waves in the high frequency (HF) or very high frequency (VHF) portion of the spectrum below 300 MHz.

[0065] The wireless communication system 100 may also operate in the Super High Frequency (SHF) region using frequency bands from 3 GHz to 30 GHz, also known as centimeter bands. The SHF region includes frequency bands that may be opportunistically used by devices that may be able to tolerate interference from other users, such as the 5 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band.

[0066] The wireless communication system 100 may also operate in the extremely high frequency (EHF) division of the spectrum (e.g., from 30 GHz to 300 GHz), which is also referred to as the millimeter band. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may support millimeter wave (mmW) communications between the UE 115 and the base station 105, and the EHF antenna of the corresponding device may be even smaller and more closely spaced than the UHF antenna. In some cases, this may facilitate the use of antenna arrays within the UE 115. However, the propagation of EHF transmissions may be subject to even greater atmospheric attenuation and shorter range than SHF or UHF transmissions. The technology disclosed herein may be adopted across transmissions using one or more different frequency divisions, and the use of frequency bands specified across these frequency divisions may differ by country or regulatory agency.

[0067] In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may utilize both licensed and unlicensed radio frequency spectrum bands. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may employ license assisted access (LAA), LTE unlicensed (LTE-U) radio access technology, or NR technology in an unlicensed band (such as a 5GHz ISM band). When operating in an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band, wireless devices (such as base stations 105 and UE 115) may employ a listen-before-talk (LBT) procedure to ensure that the frequency channel is clear before transmitting data. In some cases, operations in unlicensed bands may be based on carrier aggregation configuration (e.g., LAA) in coordination with component carriers operating in licensed bands. Operations in unlicensed spectrum may include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, peer-to-peer transmissions, or a combination of these. Duplexing in unlicensed spectrum may be based on frequency division duplexing (FDD), time division duplexing (TDD), or a combination of the two.

[0068] In some examples, the base station 105 or the UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas, which may be used to employ techniques such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication, or beamforming. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may use a transmission scheme between a transmitting device (e.g., a base station 105) and a receiving device (e.g., a UE 115), wherein the transmitting device is equipped with multiple antennas and the receiving device is equipped with one or more antennas. MIMO communication may employ multipath signal propagation to increase spectral efficiency by transmitting or receiving multiple signals via different spatial layers, which may be referred to as spatial multiplexing. For example, the transmitting device may transmit multiple signals via different antennas or different antenna combinations. Similarly, the receiving device may receive multiple signals via different antennas or different antenna combinations. Each of these multiple signals may be referred to as a separate spatial stream and may carry bits associated with the same data stream (e.g., the same codeword) or different data streams. Different spatial layers may be associated with different antenna ports for channel measurement and reporting. MIMO technology includes single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO), in which multiple spatial layers are transmitted to the same receiving device, and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO), in which multiple spatial layers are transmitted to multiple devices.

[0069] Beamforming (which may also be referred to as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception) is a signal processing technique that may be used at a transmitting device or a receiving device (e.g., a base station 105 or a UE 115) to shape or direct an antenna beam (e.g., a transmit beam or a receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting device and the receiving device. Beamforming may be achieved by combining signals communicated via antenna elements of an antenna array so that signals propagating at a particular orientation relative to the antenna array experience constructive interference, while other signals experience destructive interference. Adjustments to signals communicated via antenna elements may include the transmitting device or the receiving device applying a particular amplitude and phase shift to the signal carried via each antenna element associated with the device. Adjustments associated with each antenna element may be defined by a set of beamforming weights associated with a particular orientation (e.g., relative to the antenna array of the transmitting device or the receiving device, or relative to some other orientation).

[0070] In one example, the base station 105 may use multiple antennas or antenna arrays to perform beamforming operations for directional communication with the UE 115. For example, some signals (e.g., synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) may be transmitted multiple times by the base station 105 in different directions, which may include a signal being transmitted according to different beamforming weight sets associated with different transmission directions. The transmissions in different beam directions may be used (e.g., by the base station 105 or a receiving device, such as the UE 115) to identify the beam direction used by the base station 105 for subsequent transmission and / or reception.

[0071] Some signals, such as data signals associated with a particular recipient device, may be transmitted by base station 105 in a single beam direction (e.g., a direction associated with a recipient device, such as UE 115). In some examples, a beam direction associated with transmissions along a single beam direction may be determined based at least in part on signals transmitted in different beam directions. For example, UE 115 may receive one or more signals transmitted by base station 105 in different directions, and UE 115 may report to base station 105 an indication of the signals received by it with the highest signal quality or other acceptable signal quality. Although these techniques are described with reference to signals transmitted by base station 105 in one or more directions, UE 115 may use similar techniques for transmitting signals multiple times in different directions (e.g., for identifying a beam direction used by UE 115 for subsequent transmission or reception) or for transmitting signals in a single direction (e.g., for transmitting data to a recipient device).

[0072] A receiving device (e.g., UE 115, which may be an example of a mmW receiving device) may try multiple receive beams when receiving various signals (such as synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) from base station 105. For example, the receiving device may try multiple receive directions by receiving via different antenna subarrays, processing received signals according to different antenna subarrays, receiving according to different receive beamforming weight sets applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, or processing received signals according to different receive beamforming weight sets applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, any of which may be referred to as "listening" according to different receive beams or receive directions. In some examples, the receiving device may use a single receive beam to receive along a single beam direction (e.g., when receiving a data signal). A single receive beam may be aligned in a beam direction determined based at least in part on listening according to different receive beam directions (e.g., a beam direction determined at least in part on listening according to multiple beam directions to have the highest signal strength, the highest signal-to-noise ratio, or an otherwise acceptable signal quality).

[0073] In some cases, the antennas of a base station 105 or a UE 115 may be located within one or more antenna arrays that may support MIMO operations or transmit or receive beamforming. For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be co-located at an antenna assembly, such as an antenna tower. In some cases, the antennas or antenna arrays associated with a base station 105 may be located at various geographic locations. A base station 105 may have an antenna array having several rows and columns of antenna ports that the base station 105 may use to support beamforming for communications with a UE 115. Likewise, a UE 115 may have one or more antenna arrays that may support various MIMO or beamforming operations.

[0074] In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may be a packet-based network that operates according to a layered protocol stack. In the user plane, the communication of the bearer or packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer may be IP-based. The radio link control (RLC) layer may perform packet segmentation and reassembly to communicate on a logical channel. The media access control (MAC) layer may perform priority handling and multiplex logical channels into transport channels. The MAC layer may also use a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) to provide retransmission of the MAC layer, thereby improving link efficiency. In the control plane, the radio resource control (RRC) protocol layer may provide the establishment, configuration and maintenance of an RRC connection for a radio bearer that supports user plane data between UE115 and base station 105 or core network 130. At the physical layer, transport channels may be mapped to physical channels.

[0075] In some cases, UE 115 and base station 105 may support retransmission of data to increase the likelihood that the data is successfully received. HARQ feedback is a technique that increases the likelihood of correctly receiving data on communication link 125. HARQ may include a combination of error detection (e.g., using cyclic redundancy check (CRC)), forward error correction (FEC), and retransmission (e.g., automatic repeat request (ARQ)). HARQ can improve the throughput of the MAC layer in poor radio conditions (e.g., signal-to-noise ratio conditions). In some cases, a wireless device may support simultaneous slot HARQ feedback, where the device may provide HARQ feedback in a specific time slot for data received in a previous symbol in the time slot. In other cases, the device may provide HARQ feedback in a subsequent time slot or according to some other time interval.

[0076] The time interval in LTE or NR can be expressed in terms of a basic time unit (which may refer to, for example, a sampling period T s =1 / 30,720,000 seconds). The time intervals of the communication resources may be organized according to radio frames each having a duration of 10 milliseconds (ms), where the frame period may be expressed as T f =307,200T s . A radio frame may be identified by a system frame number (SFN) ranging from 0 to 1023. Each frame may include 10 subframes numbered from 0 to 9, and each subframe may have a duration of 1 ms. A subframe may be further divided into 2 slots, each slot having a duration of 0.5 ms, and each slot may contain 6 or 7 modulation symbol periods (e.g., depending on the length of a cyclic prefix prepended to each symbol period). Excluding the cyclic prefix, each symbol period may contain 2048 sampling periods. In some cases, a subframe may be the minimum scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 and may be referred to as a transmission time interval (TTI). In other cases, the minimum scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 may be shorter than a subframe or may be dynamically selected (e.g., in a burst of a shortened TTI (sTTI) or in a selected component carrier using sTTI).

[0077] In some wireless communication systems, a time slot may be further divided into a plurality of mini-slots containing one or more symbols. In some instances, a symbol of a mini-slot or a mini-slot may be the minimum scheduling unit. For example, each symbol may vary in duration depending on the subcarrier spacing or the operating frequency band. Further, some wireless communication systems may implement time slot aggregation, wherein a plurality of time slots or mini-slots are aggregated together and used for communication between UE 115 and base station 105.

[0078] The term "carrier" refers to a set of radio frequency spectrum resources having a defined physical layer structure for supporting communications on the communication link 125. For example, a carrier of the communication link 125 may include a portion of a radio frequency spectrum band that operates according to a physical layer channel for a given radio access technology. Each physical layer channel may carry user data, control information, or other signaling. A carrier may be associated with a predefined frequency channel (e.g., an Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System Terrestrial Radio Access (E-UTRA) Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number (EARFCN)) and may be located according to a channel grid for discovery by a UE 115. A carrier may be downlink or uplink (e.g., in FDD mode), or configured to carry downlink communications and uplink communications (e.g., in TDD mode). In some examples, a signal waveform transmitted on a carrier may include multiple subcarriers (e.g., using a multi-carrier modulation (MCM) technique such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM)).

[0079] For different radio access technologies (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, NR), the organizational structure of the carrier can be different. For example, the communication on the carrier can be organized according to TTIs or time slots, each of which can include user data and control information or signaling to support decoding of the user data. The carrier can also include dedicated acquisition signaling (e.g., synchronization signals or system information, etc.) and control signaling to coordinate the operation of the carrier. In some examples (e.g., in a carrier aggregation configuration), the carrier may also have acquisition signaling or control signaling to coordinate the operation of other carriers.

[0080] Physical channels may be multiplexed on a carrier according to various techniques. Physical control channels and physical data channels may be multiplexed on a downlink carrier, for example, using a time division multiplexing (TDM) technique, a frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technique, or a hybrid TDM-FDM technique. In some examples, control information transmitted in a physical control channel may be distributed in a cascaded manner between different control regions (e.g., between a common control region or a common search space and one or more UE-specific control regions or UE-specific search spaces).

[0081] A carrier may be associated with a particular bandwidth of the radio frequency spectrum, and in some examples, the carrier bandwidth may be referred to as the "system bandwidth" of the carrier or wireless communication system 100. For example, the carrier bandwidth may be one of several predetermined bandwidths of a carrier for a particular radio access technology (e.g., 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, or 80 MHz). In some examples, each served UE 115 may be configured to operate on part or all of the carrier bandwidth. In other examples, some UEs 115 may be configured to operate using a narrowband protocol type associated with a predefined portion or range (e.g., a set of subcarriers or RBs) within a carrier (e.g., an "in-band" deployment of a narrowband protocol type).

[0082] In a system using MCM technology, a resource element may include a symbol period (e.g., the duration of a modulation symbol) and a subcarrier, where the symbol period and the subcarrier spacing are inversely related. The number of bits carried by each resource element may depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme). Thus, the more resource elements received by UE 115 and the higher the order of the modulation scheme, the higher the data rate of UE 115 can be. In a MIMO system, wireless communication resources may refer to a combination of radio frequency spectrum resources, time resources, and space resources (e.g., space layers), and the use of multiple space layers may further increase the data rate of communication with UE 115.

[0083] A device (e.g., base station 105 or UE 115) of wireless communication system 100 may have a hardware configuration that supports communication on a particular carrier bandwidth, or may be configurable to support communication on one of a set of carrier bandwidths. In some examples, wireless communication system 100 may include base stations 105 and / or UEs 115 that support simultaneous communication via carriers associated with more than one different carrier bandwidths.

[0084] The wireless communication system 100 may support communication with the UE 115 on multiple cells or carriers, a feature that may be referred to as carrier aggregation or multi-carrier operation. The UE 115 may be configured with multiple downlink component carriers and one or more uplink component carriers according to a carrier aggregation configuration. Carrier aggregation may be used with both FDD and TDD component carriers.

[0085] In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may utilize an enhanced component carrier (eCC). An eCC may be characterized by one or more features including a wider carrier or frequency channel bandwidth, a shorter symbol duration, a shorter TTI duration, or a modified control channel configuration. In some cases, an eCC may be associated with a carrier aggregation configuration or a dual connectivity configuration (e.g., when multiple serving cells have suboptimal or non-ideal backhaul links). An eCC may also be configured for use in an unlicensed spectrum or a shared spectrum (e.g., where more than one operator is allowed to use the spectrum). An eCC characterized by a wide carrier bandwidth may include one or more segments that may be utilized by a UE 115 that is not capable of monitoring the entire carrier bandwidth or is otherwise configured to use a limited carrier bandwidth (e.g., to save power).

[0086] In some cases, an eCC may utilize a different symbol duration than other component carriers, which may include using a reduced symbol duration compared to the symbol duration of other component carriers. A shorter symbol duration may be associated with an increased spacing between adjacent subcarriers. A device utilizing an eCC (such as a UE 115 or a base station 105) may transmit a wideband signal (e.g., according to a frequency channel or carrier bandwidth of 20, 40, 60, 80 MHz, etc.) with a reduced symbol duration (e.g., 16.67 microseconds). A TTI in an eCC may include one or more symbol periods. In some cases, the TTI duration (i.e., the number of symbol periods in a TTI) may be variable.

[0087] The wireless communication system 100 may be an NR system that may utilize any combination of licensed, shared, and unlicensed spectrum bands, etc. The flexibility of eCC symbol duration and subcarrier spacing may allow eCC to be used across multiple spectrums. In some examples, NR shared spectrum may improve spectrum utilization and spectrum efficiency, particularly through dynamic vertical (e.g., across frequency domain) and horizontal (e.g., across time domain) sharing of resources.

[0088] The UE 115 may transmit a UE capability message indicating support for a dual base station control resource allocation scheme during an MBB handover procedure from the source base station 105 to the target base station 105, wherein the dual base station control resource allocation scheme includes partitioning a maximum number of control channel monitoring resources supported by the UE between the source base station 105 and the target base station 105. The UE 115 may identify a first set of control channel monitoring resources for the source base station 105 and a second set of control channel monitoring resources for the target base station 105 based at least in part on the dual base station control resource allocation scheme. The UE 115 may receive control information from the source base station 105 during the first set of control channel monitoring resources and receive control information from the target base station 105 during the second set of control channel monitoring resources during the MBB handover procedure.

[0089] A base station 105 (which may be considered a source base station or a serving base station 105 in this context) may receive a UE capability message indicating support for a dual base station control resource allocation scheme during an MBB handover procedure of a UE 115 from the source base station 105 to a target base station 105, wherein the dual base station control resource allocation scheme includes partitioning a maximum number of UE-supported control channel monitoring resources between the source base station 105 and the target base station 105. The base station 105 may select a first set of control channel monitoring resources for the source base station 105 and a second set of control channel monitoring resources for the target base station 105 based at least in part on the dual base station control resource allocation scheme. The base station 105 may transmit source base station control information from the source base station 105 during the first set of control channel monitoring resources, and the target base station 105 transmits target base station control information during the second set of control channel monitoring resources during the MBB handover procedure.

[0090] Figure 2 An example of a wireless communication system 200 that supports simultaneous reception of control information from a source cell and a target cell during a handover in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the wireless communication system 200 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. The wireless communication system 200 can include a source base station 205, a target base station 210, and a UE 215, which can be examples of corresponding devices described herein.

[0091] Wireless communication systems, such as wireless communication system 200, typically utilize mobility enhancement functionalities that are designed to reduce or otherwise eliminate interruption time during a handover procedure. For example, during an MBB handover procedure, UE 215 may maintain a connection to source base station 205 by receiving a handover command until UE 215 performs an initial uplink / downlink transmission / reception to / from target base station 210. While maintaining simultaneous connectivity to two base stations, UE 215 typically needs to receive / transmit signals from / to both base stations. This may be achieved using spatial division multiplexing (e.g., multi-link using multi-beam / multi-panel connectivity), TDM, FDM (e.g., CA / dual connectivity (DC) using two carrier groups from the source base station and the target base station, respectively), or CDM (e.g., different scrambling sequences similar to a soft handover procedure, dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS), etc.).

[0092] A non-limiting example of this includes an MBB intra-base station handover procedure where a central unit (CU) function of a base station (e.g., a gNB) manages multiple distributed unit (DU) functions, where a UE is handed over from one DU function (a source cell or base station in this context) to a different DU function of the base station (a target cell or base station in this context). In this example, the control plane connection to the core network may not change during the handover procedure, e.g., due to UE mobility between cells under different gNB-DUs sharing the same gNB-CU. A single security context may be maintained from the source gNB-DU to the target gNB-DU.

[0093] In this example, MBB handover may begin with an event trigger (e.g., a poor channel performance measurement between the UE and the source gNB-DU or a better channel performance measurement between the UE and the target gNB-DU than the source gNB-DU). Based on the event trigger, the UE may transmit a measurement report to its source base station (e.g., the source gNB-DU), which is forwarded to the gNB-CU. The gNB-CU may determine that a handover is warranted and therefore initiate an MBB handover procedure from the source base station (e.g., the source gNB-DU) to the target base station (e.g., the target gNB-DU that shares the gNB-CU with the source gNB-DU). This may include UE context establishment using a request / response exchange between the gNB-CU and the target gNB-DU, where the gNB-CU establishes some level of context for the UE for the target gNB-DU. Next, the gNB-CU may transmit or otherwise provide a reconfiguration signal (e.g., RRCReconfiguration) to the UE via the source gNB-DU, which carries or conveys an indication of a cell group configuration, a reconfiguration with synchronization, an MBB handover indication, etc. The UE may continue its data transmission / reception with the source gNB-DU while connected to the target gNB-DU (e.g., establish a certain degree of synchronization and RRC connection with the target gNB-DU). Accordingly and at this point in the MBB handover procedure, the UE maintains connectivity with both the source gNB-DU and the target gNB-DU. The UE may transmit an RRC Connection Reconfiguration Complete message to the target gNB-DU, which is forwarded to the gNB-CU, which makes a decision to release the connection between the UE and the source gNB-DU. Accordingly, the gNB-CU and the source gNB-DU may exchange UE Context Modification Request / Response signaling, and the gNB-CU then transmits an RRC Reconfiguration message to the UE via the target gNB-DU. The RRC Reconfiguration message carries or conveys an indication to release the UE's source gNB-DU cell cluster. Accordingly and at this point in the MBB handover procedure, the UE drops its connectivity with the original source gNB-DU and instead communicates via the target gNB-DU (which is now the UE's new source gNB-DU). The UE may transmit an RRC Reconfiguration Complete message to the gNB-CU via the new source gNB-DU (e.g., the original target gNB-DU), which triggers UE context release signaling between the original source gNB-DU and the gNB-CU. Accordingly, during a substantial portion of the MBB handover procedure, the UE is expected to maintain simultaneous connectivity with both the source base station and the target base station (e.g., the source gNB-DU and the target gNB-DU in this context).Although the intra-gNB MBB switching procedure is described as an example above, it will be understood that the MBB switching procedure may be an inter-gNB switching procedure from one gNB to another gNB.

[0094] In a conflicting scenario (e.g., UE 215 cannot receive / transmit from / to two base stations simultaneously), UE 215 may prioritize one base station / channel / signal and discard another base station / channel / signal based on rules such as, but not limited to, base station priority, channel / signal priority, Quality of Service (QOS) based priority, and the like.

[0095] However, UE 215 may not be able to maintain connectivity to both the source base station and the target base station at the same time. For example, the UE's ability to receive control information in a CA / DC scenario may be limited due to UE capabilities. That is, due to the complexity and processing timeline issues associated with dual connectivity during the MBB switching procedure, the ability of UE 215 to monitor control information (e.g., PDCCH) may be limited. The limitation may be based on the maximum number of PDCCH candidate monitoring opportunities per time slot supported by UE 215, the maximum number of non-overlapping control channel elements (CCEs) monitored per time slot, etc. In one example, UE 215 may be a specific type of UE (e.g., a low-end UE, a wearable device, an IoT device, etc.), where the type of UE is associated with such limitations.

[0096] As a non-limiting example and in a CA scenario, a UE 215 supporting more than four CCs may report its PDCCH monitoring capabilities (eg, or pdcch-Blind Detection CA (pdcch-blind detection CA). If the number of downlink CCs configured for UE 215 is Less than or equal to The UE 215 can monitor up to PDCCH candidates and up to non-overlapping CCEs. Otherwise (for example, ), the UE 215 may monitor up to PDCCH candidates and up to non-overlapping CCEs. In this context, u may correspond to at least one of the following:

[0097]

[0098] and / or

[0099]

[0100]

[0101] When UE 215 is connected to two cells (e.g., source base station 205 and target base station 210), the same or similar UE capability restrictions may be applied during the MBB switching procedure and monitoring of PDCCHs from the two cells. Since the priorities of the two cells and the number of CCs for each cell may be different, the overall PDCCH capability of the UE may be divided asymmetrically between the cells.

[0102] Accordingly, aspects of the described techniques provide various mechanisms that can support a UE 215 receiving control information from both a source base station 205 and a target base station 210 simultaneously during an MBB handover procedure. For example and for an inter-band MBB handover procedure, the UE 215 can maintain a connection with the source base station 205 using a first component carrier (e.g., CC1) while establishing a connection with the target base station 210 using a second component carrier (e.g., CC2). The UE 215 can transmit and receive simultaneously on both CCs (e.g., CC1 in frequency range one (FR1) and CC2 in FR2, or vice versa).

[0103] UE 215 may transmit a UE capability message to source base station 205 indicating support for a dual base station control resource allocation scheme during an MBB handover procedure from source base station 205 to target base station 210. In some aspects, the dual base station control resource allocation scheme may include partitioning a maximum number of UE-supported control channel monitoring resources between source base station 205 and target base station 210. Broadly, each control channel monitoring resource may include a time-frequency resource where UE 215 monitors control information transmitted on a control channel (e.g., PDCCH) from each of source base station 205 and target base station 210. In some aspects, UE 215 capability signaling may include indicating the same (or similar) UE capabilities for CA PDCCH monitoring (e.g., Alternatively, the UE 215 supporting the MBB handover procedure may report the PDCCH monitoring capabilities for the source base station 205 and the target base station 210, respectively. For example, the UE 215 may report in its UE capability message: and in

[0104] Accordingly, UE 215, source base station 205, and / or target base station 210 may select, identify, or otherwise determine (based on the dual-base station control resource allocation scheme indicated in the UE capability message) a first set of control channel monitoring resources for source base station 205 and a second set of control channel monitoring resources for target base station 210. In some aspects, the UE capability for monitoring PDCCH (e.g., ) may be distributed between the source base station 205 and the target base station 210. In some aspects, the source base station 205 and the target base station 210 may coordinate (e.g., over a backhaul network, via a core network, etc.) in selecting the first and second sets of control channel monitoring resources. In another example, the source base station 205 may send a signal to the target base station 210 indicating or otherwise identifying the selected resources for the target base station 210.

[0105] In a first example, when UE 215 reports the respective PDCCH monitoring capabilities for source base station 205 and target base station 210 in its UE capability message, the rules for determining the maximum number of monitored PDCCH candidates and non-overlapping CCEs (e.g., control channel monitoring resources) may be applied. and replace To apply the maximum number of monitored PDCCH candidates and non-overlapping CCEs to each base station.

[0106] In another example, when UE 215 reports a single PDCCH monitoring capability (e.g., ) is to be used for an MBB handover procedure, a rule for determining a maximum number of monitored PDCCH candidates and non-overlapping CCEs (e.g., control channel monitoring resources) may be applied. This may include applying the same rule to all aggregated CCs of the source base station 205 and the target base station 210 regardless of the base station (or cell). Alternatively, the maximum number of monitored PDCCH candidates and non-overlapping CCEs (e.g., control channel monitoring resources) may be asymmetrically divided between the two base stations based on a predetermined / configured rule. The rule (e.g., a scaling factor) may be based on the priority of the base station (e.g., for early termination of the handover procedure, the target base station 210 may be prioritized, for reducing the ping-pong effect, the source base station 205 may be prioritized, etc.). The rule may be based on the parameter design of the base station (or cell), the number of CCs configured for each base station, etc.

[0107] Accordingly, and during the MBB handover procedure, the source base station 205 may transmit control information to the UE 215 using the first set of control channel monitoring resources, while the target base station 210 transmits control information to the UE 215 using the second set of control channel monitoring resources. Accordingly, aspects of the described techniques provide a mechanism by which, during the MBB handover procedure, the maximum number of control channel monitoring resources supported by the UE 215 is divided between the source base station 205 and the target base station 210 in a manner that ensures that the UE 215 can receive control information from both the two base stations.

[0108] Although the techniques described above are generally with respect to inter-band MBB switching procedures, it will be appreciated that these techniques may also be applied to a UE 215 that is capable of simultaneously receiving from a source base station 205 and a target base station 210 (e.g., such as multi-beam connectivity in mmW networks).

[0109] Figure 3 An example of a control resource configuration 300 supporting simultaneous reception of control information from a source cell and a target cell during a handover according to aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the control resource configuration 300 may implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100 and / or 200. Various aspects of the control resource configuration 300 may be implemented by a UE and / or a base station, which may be various examples of corresponding devices described herein. More specifically, various aspects of the control resource configuration 300 may be implemented by a source base station and a target base station involved in an inter-band CA MBB handover procedure of a UE, in which the same UE capability for CA PDCCH monitoring is used.

[0110] As discussed above, the UE may transmit or otherwise provide a UE capability message that carries or conveys an indication of support for a dual base station control resource allocation scheme during an MBB handover procedure. In general, the dual base station control resource allocation scheme may include partitioning a maximum number of control channel monitoring resources (e.g., PDCCH candidates and / or non-overlapping CCEs) supported by the UE between a source base station and a target base station.

[0111] In the example illustrated in the control resource configuration 300, the source base station may be configured with three component carriers (e.g., CC1, CC2, and CC3), wherein the target base station may be configured with two component carriers for the UE (e.g., CC4 and CC5). However, it should be understood that the source base station and / or the target base station may configure more or fewer CCEs for the UE. Accordingly, during the MBB handover procedure, the UE may maintain simultaneous connectivity with the source base station on CC1, CC2, and / or CC3 and with the target base station on CC4 and / or CC5. In some aspects, each CC (e.g., CC1-CC5) may be designed using the same or different parameters.

[0112] According to the dual-base station control resource allocation scheme indicated in the UE capability message, the total budget for the maximum number of PDCCH candidates and non-overlapping CCEs per time slot monitored by the UE can be determined. That is, the source base station, the target base station and / or the UE can select, identify or otherwise determine a first set of control channel monitoring resources for the source base station and a second set of control channel monitoring resources for the target base station. Accordingly, during time slot 315, the source base station may be assigned control channel monitoring resources 305-a in CC1, control channel monitoring resources 305-b in CC2, and control channel monitoring resources 305-c in CC3. The target base station may be assigned control channel monitoring resources 310-a in CC4 and control channel monitoring resources 310-b in CC5 during the first time slot 320-a, and may be assigned control channel monitoring resources 310-c in CC4 and control channel monitoring resources 310-d in CC5 during the second time slot 320-b. In the example illustrated in control resource configuration 300, time slot 315 and time slot 320 may have different durations, for example, due to different subcarrier spacing between the source base station and the target base station.

[0113] Broadly, the distribution of resources between the first set of control channel monitoring resources and the second set of control channel monitoring resources may be symmetric or asymmetric.

[0114] In a symmetric resource allocation scheme, each CC (from the source base station and / or the target base station) may be assigned a number of PDCCH candidates / CCEs. In this context, symmetric may mean that the same distribution rule is symmetrically applied to each CC, although the actual number may be different based on the parameter design of the CC. In an asymmetric resource allocation scheme, when the target base station is prioritized, each CC in the target base station may first be assigned an unlimited maximum number (e.g., ), and the remaining are assigned to the source base station. Accordingly, the supported number of control channel monitoring resources can be divided between the source base station and the target base station.

[0115] Accordingly, the UE may receive control information from the source base station using a first set of control channel monitoring resources (e.g., control channel monitoring resources 305 on CC1, CC2, and CC3) while simultaneously (at least to some extent) receiving control information from the target base station using a second set of control channel monitoring resources (e.g., control channel monitoring resources 310 on CC4 and CC5).

[0116] As discussed above, the same rules as in the inter-band handover scenario may apply to other situations. For example, both CC1 of the source base station and CC4 of the target base station may be in the same frequency range band (e.g., FR1). Accordingly, and in this band, beamforming may not be used for PDCCH transmissions from the source base station and the serving base station (e.g., no QCL type D may be applicable).

[0117] In other cases, different rules may be applied. For example, CC1 of the source base station and CC4 of the target base station may both be in the same frequency range band (e.g., FR2). Accordingly and in this band, beamforming for PDCCH transmission may be used (e.g., QCL type D may be applicable across all CCs in the same band). If the UE is not capable of simultaneous reception (e.g., multi-beam / multi-panel reception), the UE may be required to prioritize one beam over another. In some aspects, the priority order may be determined based on the base station (or cell), based on the channel / reference signal, based on quality of service requirements, etc. Based on the priority order, if the UE monitors only one link (source base station or target base station) in a time slot (e.g., TDM per time slot), the CA PDCCH monitoring capability and priority ordering rules may be applied to each link. If the UE monitors both links in the time slot (e.g., TDM within a time slot), the same rules in the inter-band MBB switching procedure may be applied.

[0118] Figure 4 An example of a control resource configuration 400 that supports simultaneous reception of control information from a source cell and a target cell during a handover in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the control resource configuration 400 may implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100 and / or 200, and / or the control resource configuration 300. Aspects of the control resource configuration 400 may be implemented by a source base station, a target base station, and / or a UE, which may be respective examples of corresponding devices described herein. Broadly, the control resource configuration 400 illustrates an example allocation of control channel monitoring resources based on a maximum number of PDCCH candidates monitored per time slot and / or a maximum number of non-overlapping CCEs monitored per time slot.

[0119] In general, control resource configuration 400 illustrates two examples of how a maximum number of PDCCH candidates and non-overlapping CCEs (e.g., a maximum number of supported control channel monitoring resources) for a UE may be allocated during an MBB handover procedure. As discussed above, a UE may transmit or otherwise provide a UE capability message that carries or otherwise communicates an indication of support for a dual base station resource allocation scheme during an MBB handover procedure. In some aspects, the dual base station control resource allocation scheme may include a scheme for dividing the maximum number of UE-supported control channel monitoring resources between a source base station and a target base station.

[0120] As discussed, based on the UE capability message, a first set of control channel monitoring resources for the source base station and a second set of control channel monitoring resources for the target base station may be identified, selected, or otherwise determined for use by the UE during the MBB handover procedure. Also as discussed, the first set of control channel monitoring resources and the second set of control channel monitoring resources may be allocated symmetrically or asymmetrically.

[0121] For example and continuing with the example illustrated in control resource configuration 300 (where the source base station uses CC1, CC2 and CC3, while the target base station uses CC4 and CC5), this may include a symmetric distribution 405 or an asymmetric distribution 410 of the total budget 415 of control channel monitoring resources supported by the maximum number of UEs.

[0122] Broadly, symmetrical distribution 405 may include applying the same distribution rule to each CC, although the actual number of configured PDCCH candidates may be different from base station to base station. That is, in symmetrical distribution 405, the same rule (e.g., weighting factor) as the rule applied to each CC of the target base station may be applied to each CC of the source base station. Even though this may or may not result in the same number of PDCCH candidates per CC being configured in the first group of control channel monitoring resources and the second group of control channel monitoring resources, this can also ensure that such control channel monitoring resources are fairly allocated to the source base station and the target base station. In contrast, asymmetrical distribution 410 may include applying different rules to each CC (or each base station) than the rules applied to other CCs (or other base stations). As an example, this may include prioritizing the target base station, wherein the maximum number of PDCCH candidates monitored per time slot is first assigned to each CC in the target base station. In this example, any remaining PDCCH candidates that can be supported by the UE may be assigned or otherwise allocated in the first group of control channel monitoring resources for the source base station.

[0123] Accordingly, the UE may use a first set of control channel resources in CC1, CC2, and CC3 to receive control information from the source base station, while the UE may use a second set of control channel resources in CC4 and CC5 to receive control information from the target base station.

[0124] Figure 5 An example of a process 500 that supports simultaneous reception of control information from a source cell and a target cell during a handover in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the process 500 can implement aspects of wireless communication systems 100 and / or 200, and / or control resource configurations 300 and / or 400. The process 500 can be implemented by a source base station 505 and / or a UE 510, which can be examples of corresponding devices described herein.

[0125] At 515, UE 5110 may transmit (and source base station 505 may receive) a UE capabilities message that carries or otherwise communicates an indication of support for a dual base station control resource allocation scheme during an MBB handover procedure from source base station 505 to a target base station. The dual base station control resource allocation scheme may include dividing a maximum number of UE-supported control channel monitoring resources between the source base station and the target base station.

[0126] In some aspects, this may include UE 510 generating a UE capability message to indicate support for a symmetric dual base station control resource allocation scheme and / or an asymmetric dual base station control resource allocation scheme. In some aspects, in a symmetric dual base station control resource allocation scheme, the first set of control channel monitoring resources may include a balanced number of control channel monitoring resources compared to the second set of control channel monitoring resources. In some aspects, in an asymmetric dual base station control resource allocation scheme, the first set of control channel monitoring resources may include an unbalanced number of control channel monitoring resources compared to the second set of control channel monitoring resources.

[0127] In some aspects, this may include UE 510 generating a UE capability message to include a first indication of support for a source base station resource allocation scheme and a second indication of support for a target base station resource allocation scheme. In some aspects, this may include UE 510 generating a UE capability message to include a single indication of support for a dual base station control resource allocation scheme.

[0128] In some aspects, control channel monitoring resources supported by the UE may include PDCCH candidates for which the UE 510 attempts to blind decode and / or CCE candidate locations of the PDCCH for which the UE 510 performs channel estimation.

[0129] At 520, the source base station 505 may select a first set of control channel monitoring resources for the source base station 505 and a second set of control channel monitoring resources for the target base station based on the dual base station control resource allocation scheme indicated in the UE capability message.

[0130] In some aspects, this may include the source base station 505 identifying base station priorities of the source base station 505 and the target base station, parameter designs of the source base station 505 and the target base station, and / or a number of CCs associated with the source base station 505 and the target base station.

[0131] In some aspects, this may include the base station 505 providing an indication of the second set of control channel monitoring resources to the target base station during the MBB handover procedure. In some aspects, this may include the base station 505 coordinating with the target base station to select the first set of control channel monitoring resources and the second set of control channel monitoring resources during the MBB handover procedure. For example, the source base station 505 and the target base station may coordinate via a backhaul network, a core network, and / or a CU function (e.g., a gNB-CU function) associated with the source base station and the target base station.

[0132] In some aspects, this may include the source base station 505 determining that the UE 510 supports at least one of a symmetric and / or an asymmetric dual base station control resource allocation scheme. In some aspects, the symmetric dual base station control resource allocation scheme may include: a first set of control channel monitoring resources including a balanced number of control channel monitoring resources compared to a second set of control channel monitoring resources. In some aspects, the asymmetric dual base station control resource allocation scheme may include: a first set of control channel monitoring resources including an unbalanced number of control channel monitoring resources compared to a second set of control channel monitoring resources.

[0133] At 525, UE 510 may identify a first set of control channel monitoring resources for source base station 505 and a second set of control channel monitoring resources for target base station based on the dual base station control resource allocation scheme. In some aspects, the first set of control channel monitoring resources may be in the same frequency range as the second set of control channel monitoring resources or in a different frequency range. In some aspects, source base station 505 may transmit a signal to UE 510 indicating the selected first set of control channel monitoring resources and second set of control channel monitoring resources.

[0134] At 530, UE 530 may receive control information from source base station 505 using a first set of control channel monitoring resources and also receive control information from target base station using a second set of control channel monitoring resources during an MBB handover procedure.

[0135] When the same frequency range is used, this may include the UE 510 receiving control information from the source base station 505 using a first set of control channel monitoring resources using a first beamformed configuration, and receiving control information from the target base station using a second set of control channel monitoring resources using a second beamformed configuration different from the first beamformed configuration. When different frequency ranges are used, this may include the UE 510 receiving control information from the source base station using a first set of control channel monitoring resources over a first frequency range, and receiving control information from the target base station using a second set of control channel monitoring resources over a second frequency range different from the first frequency range.
