[0017] The detailed description of the accompanying drawings is intended as a description of the preferred embodiments of the present disclosure, and is not intended to represent the only form in which the present disclosure can be practiced. It should be understood that the same or equivalent functions can be implemented by different embodiments intended to be included in the spirit and scope of the present disclosure.
[0018] refer to Figure 1 , the wireless communication system 100 may include a user equipment (UE) 101, a base station (BS) 102, and a core network (CN) 103. Figure 1 A specific number of UEs 101, BSs 102, and CNs 103 are depicted in FIG. 1 , but it is contemplated that any number of UEs 101, BSs 102, and CNs 103 may be included in the wireless communication system 100.
[0019] CN 103 may include a core access and mobility management function (AMF) entity. BS 102, which may communicate with CN 103, may operate or work under the control of the AMF entity. CN 103 may further include a user plane function (UPF) entity, which is communicatively coupled to the AMF entity.
[0020] BS 102 may be distributed throughout a geographic area. In certain embodiments of the present application, BS 102 may also be referred to as an access point, an access terminal, a base station, a base station unit, a macro cell, a Node B, an evolved Node B (eNB), a gNB, a home Node B, a relay node or a device, or described using other terms used in the art. BS 102 is typically part of a radio access network, which may include one or more controllers communicatively coupled to one or more corresponding BSs.
[0021] For example, UE 101 may include, but is not limited to, computing devices such as desktop computers, laptop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), tablet computers, smart TVs (e.g., TVs connected to the Internet), set-top boxes, game consoles, security systems (including security cameras), vehicle-mounted computers, network devices (e.g., routers, switches, and modems), Internet of Things (IoT) devices, or the like.
[0022] According to some embodiments of the present application, for example, UE 101 may include (but is not limited to) a portable wireless communication device, a smart phone, a cellular phone, a flip phone, a device with a subscriber identity module, a personal computer, a selective call receiver, or any other device capable of sending and receiving communication signals on a wireless network.
[0023] In some embodiments of the present application, for example, UE 101 may include (but not limited to) a wearable device, such as a smart watch, a fitness bracelet, an optical head-mounted display, or the like. In addition, UE 101 may be referred to as a subscriber unit, a mobile device, a mobile station, a user, a terminal, a mobile terminal, a wireless terminal, a fixed terminal, a subscriber station, a user terminal, or a device, or described using other terms used in the art. UE 101 may communicate directly with BS 102 via uplink communication signals.
[0024] The wireless communication system 100 may be compatible with any type of network capable of sending and receiving wireless communication signals. For example, the wireless communication system 100 is compatible with a wireless communication network, a cellular telephone network, a network based on time division multiple access (TDMA), a network based on code division multiple access (CDMA), a network based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), a long term evolution (LTE) network, a network based on 3GPP, a 5G network based on 3GPP, a satellite communication network, a high altitude platform network, and / or other communication networks.
[0025] In some embodiments of the present application, the wireless communication system 100 is compatible with 5G New Radio (NR) of the 3GPP protocol or 5G NR-light of the 3GPP protocol, wherein the BS 102 transmits data using an OFDM modulation scheme on a downlink (DL), and the UE 101 transmits data using a single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) or OFDM scheme on an uplink (UL). However, more generally, the wireless communication system 100 may implement some other open or proprietary communication protocols, such as WiMAX, and other protocols.
[0026] In some embodiments of the present application, BS 102 may communicate using other communication protocols, such as the IEEE 802.11 wireless communication protocol family. Further, in some embodiments of the present application, BS 102 may communicate on a licensed spectrum, while in other embodiments, BS 102 may communicate on an unlicensed spectrum. The present application is not intended to be limited to implementations of any particular wireless communication system architecture or protocol. In still other embodiments of the present application, BS 102 may communicate with UE 101 using 3GPP5G protocols.
[0027] According to some existing protocols for mobile terminated early data transfer (MT-EDT), after receiving a paging with a UE identification record, UE 101 may need to initiate a DL data reception procedure to receive DL data. Some types of DL data reception procedures may be candidates to be applied by UE 101 based on the requirement of small data transmission or 10 Mbps data rate in NR-Light.
[0028] In some embodiments, the DL data reception process may include: (1) a random access (RA) process based on message 2 (Msg.2); (2) a RA process based on message 4 (Msg.4); (3) a 2-step RA process; (4) a conventional RA process; (5) a pre-configured uplink resource process; and (6) a process in which DL information is transmitted in a paging message.
[0029] Specifically, in the Msg.2-based RA procedure, the BS 102 may transmit some DL data to the UE 101 by responding to the RA preamble (i.e., the message 1 of the MT-EDT) through the RA response (i.e., the message 2 of the MT-EDT). In the Msg.4-based RA procedure, the BS 102 may transmit some DL data to the UE 101 at Msg.4 of the RA in response to the message (i.e., the message 3 of the RA procedure). In the 2-step RA procedure, the BS 102 may transmit some DL data to the UE 101 by responding to the response of Msg.A (i.e., the message B of the 2-step RA procedure).
[0030] In a conventional RA procedure, BS 102 may transmit some DL data to UE 101 after UE 101 enters connected mode (i.e., the first DL message after UE 101 enters connected mode). In a preconfigured uplink resource procedure with possible preamble-free transmission, after uplink information is transmitted from UE 101 to BS 102 at preconfigured uplink resources (PUR), BS 102 may transmit some DL data to UE 101. However, the specific details of UE 101, BS 102, and CN 103 applying the same DL data reception procedure have not been discussed, and there are still some issues that need to be addressed.
[0031] refer to Figure 2A During a non-access stratum (NAS) procedure between UE 101, BS 102, and CN 103, UE 103 may report capability information 101C to CN 103. In particular, different UEs or UE services may support different DL data transmission procedures. Therefore, UE 101 may need to report its capability information 101C for indicating to CN 103 at least one DL data transmission procedure supported by UE 101.
[0032] In detail, during the NAS process, the UE 101 may transmit the capability information 101C to the AMF entity of the CN 103 via the BS 102. In some embodiments, the capability information 101C may be used to indicate to the AMF entity at least one DL data transmission process supported by the UE 101. More specifically, in some embodiments, when the UE 101 is in an idle state or an inactive state, the capability information 101C may be used to indicate to the AMF entity at least one DL data transmission process supported by the UE 101.
[0033] In some embodiments, when the UE 101 is in an idle state or an inactive state, the capability information 101C may include at least one preferred process of at least one DL data transmission process. Therefore, after receiving the capability information 101C having at least one preferred process from the UE 101, when the UE 101 is in an idle state or an inactive state, the at least one preferred process of the UE 101 may be indicated to the AMF entity of the CN 103.
[0034] For example, when UE 101 supports three types of DL data transmission procedures, which are type "A", type "B" and type "C", and the preferred procedure of UE 101 is type "A", UE 101 transmits capability information 101C to the AMF entity of CN 103 for indicating to the AMF entity that UE 101 supports type "A", type "B" and type "C". DL data transmission procedures and the preferred procedure of UE 101 are type "A". Subsequently, after receiving the capability information 101C from UE 101, the AMF entity is indicated that UE 101 supports type "A", type "B" and type "C" DL data transmission procedures, and the preferred procedure of UE 101 is type "A". In some implementations, the preferred procedure of UE 101 may include one or more DL data transmission procedures. For example, the preferred procedure of UE 101 may be a 2-step RA procedure and a PUR procedure. Alternatively, UE 101 may implicitly transmit the preferred procedure by transmitting an indication indicating the service type required by UE 101. In other words, a service type may be associated with a preference process.
[0035] In some embodiments, the capability information 101C may include ranking information of the priority of at least one DL data transmission process. Therefore, after receiving the capability information 101C with ranking information from the UE 101, the priority of at least one DL data transmission process of the UE 101 may be indicated to the AMF entity of the CN 103.
[0036] For example, when the UE 101 supports three types of DL data transmission procedures, which are type "X", type "Y", and type "Z", and the ranking information includes a priority order of type "Y", type "X", and type "Z" from high to low, the UE 101 transmits capability information 101C to the AMF entity of the CN 103 for indicating to the AMF entity that the UE 101 supports type "X", type "Y", and type "Z" DL data transmission procedures, and the priority order from high to low is type "Y", type "X", and type "Z". Subsequently, after receiving the capability information 101C from the UE 101, the AMF entity is indicated that the UE 101 supports type "X", type "Y", and type "Z" DL data transmission procedures, and the priority order from high to low is type "Y", type "X", and type "Z".
[0037] During the NAS procedure, the AMF entity of the CN 103 may determine the UE configuration information 103C of the UE 101. In some embodiments, the UE configuration information 103C may include a determined DL data transmission procedure supported by the UE 101 when the UE 101 is in an idle state or an inactive state. In some embodiments, when the UE 101 is in an idle state or an inactive state, the UE configuration information 103C may include ranking information of a priority of at least one DL data transmission procedure supported by the UE 101. In some embodiments, the AMF entity of the CN 103 may transmit the UE configuration information 103C to the UE 101 via the BS 102 during the NAS procedure. In some embodiments, the NAS procedure may include at least one of a Tracking Area Update (TAU) procedure and an Attach procedure of LTE or New Radio (NR).
[0038] In some embodiments, UE 103 may enter an idle state after the NAS process. Then, when CN 103 needs to transmit DL data to UE 101, the AMF entity of CN 103 may transmit a paging message 103P to BS 102 serving UE 101. Paging message 103P may include UE information of UE 101 (e.g., UE identity of UE 101) and UE configuration information 103C. BS 102 may determine the DL data transmission process of UE 101 according to UE configuration information 103C.
[0039] Next, BS 102 may transmit a paging message 102P to UE 101. Paging message 102P may include a process indication. After receiving paging message 102P, UE 101 may select a DL data transmission process according to the process indication, so that UE 101 may receive DL data from BS 102 according to the DL data transmission process.
[0040] In some embodiments, the paging message may include available resources for an idle state or an inactive state of UE 101. In detail, the available resources may be used to explicitly or implicitly indicate to UE 101 a process selected as a DL data transmission process. The available resources may be at least one of the following resources: (1) resources of Msg.1 for a RA process based on Msg.2; (2) resources of Msg.1 for a RA process based on Msg.4; (3) resources of Msg.A for a 2-step RACH process; (4) resources of Msg.1 for a conventional RA process; (5) resources of a preconfigured uplink resource process; or (6) resources of DL data in a paging message or scheduling information of DL data in a paging message.
[0041] In some embodiments, the process indication may indicate to UE 101 to select a DL data transmission process from one of the following DL data transmission processes: (1) a RA process based on Msg.2; (2) a RA process based on Msg.4; (3) a 2-step RACH process; (4) a conventional RA process; (5) a preconfigured uplink resource process; and (6) a process in which DL information is transmitted in a paging message.
[0042] In addition, in some embodiments, there may be a default setting of a process set configured in UE 101 and BS 102. The process set may be set to include at least one of the following: (1) RA process based on Msg.2; (2) RA process based on Msg.4; (3) 2-step RACH process; (4) pre-configured uplink resource process; (5) 4-step RACH process; (6) conventional RA process; and (7) a process in which DL information is transmitted in a paging message. In addition, the process set may be:
[0043] Set A includes the RA process based on Msg.2, the RA process based on Msg.4, the 2-step RACH process, the pre-configured uplink resource process and the conventional RA process;
[0044] Set B includes the RA process based on Msg.4, the 2-step RACH process, the pre-configured uplink resource process and the conventional RA process;
[0045] Set C includes a 2-step RACH procedure, a 4-step RACH procedure, and a preconfigured uplink resource procedure;
[0046] Set D includes 2-step RACH process, 4-step RACH process, pre-configured uplink resource process and conventional RA process;
[0047] Set E includes a 2-step RACH process and a preconfigured uplink resource process;
[0048] Set F includes the 2-step RACH process, the preconfigured uplink resource process, and the conventional RA process;
[0049] Set G includes the 4-step RACH process, the pre-configured uplink resource process, and the conventional RA process;
[0050] Set H includes a 4-step RACH process and a preconfigured uplink resource process;
[0051] Set I includes a 2-step RACH procedure and a 4-step RACH procedure; or
[0052] Set J includes a 2-step RACH procedure, a 4-step RACH procedure, and a normal RA procedure.
[0053] It should be noted that in some embodiments, the 4-step RACH procedure may include a RACH procedure applied by UE 101 to receive DL data at the Msg.2 step in a Msg.2-based RA procedure, or at the Msg.4 step in a Msg.4-based RA procedure. In some embodiments, the 4-step RACH procedure may include a RACH procedure applied by UE 101 to transmit UL data at the Msg.3 step of some RA procedures.
[0054] In these embodiments, the process indication indicates to the UE 101 to select a DL data transmission process from one element of the process set. For example, when the default setting of the process set A is configured in the UE 101 and the BS 102, the process indication indicates to the UE 101 to select a DL data transmission process from one of the following: a RA process based on Msg.2, a RA process based on Msg.4, a 2-step RACH process, a pre-configured uplink resource process, and a conventional RA process.
[0055] refer to Figure 2B In some embodiments, the 2-step RACH procedure may be applied as a DL data transmission procedure between the UE 101 and the BS 102. Specifically, the procedure indication from the BS 102 indicates to the UE 101 that the 2-step RACH procedure is selected as the DL data transmission procedure. Then, after receiving the paging message 102P with the procedure indication, the UE 101 may apply the 2-step RACH procedure as the DL data transmission procedure.
[0056] Next, UE 101 may transmit a Message A preamble (i.e., a Message A preamble of a 2-step RACH procedure) to BS 102, and transmit a Message A UL Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) (i.e., a Message A UL PUSCH of a 2-step RACH procedure) to BS 102. UE 101 may then receive a Message B Response with DL data (i.e., a Message B Response of a 2-step RACH procedure) from BS 102.
[0057] refer to Figure 2C In some embodiments, the RA procedure based on Msg.4 may be applied as a DL data transmission procedure between UE 101 and BS 102. Specifically, the procedure indication from BS 102 indicates to UE 101 that the RARACH procedure based on Msg.4 is selected as the DL data transmission procedure. Then, after receiving the paging message 102P with the procedure indication, UE 101 may apply the RA procedure based on Msg.4 as the DL data transmission procedure.
[0058] Next, UE 101 may transmit a Message 1 preamble (i.e., a Message 1 preamble of a RA procedure based on Mag. 4) to BS 102. UE 101 may receive a Message 2 RA response (i.e., a Message 2 RA response of a RA procedure based on Mag. 4) from BS 102. UE 101 may transmit a Message 3 (i.e., a Message 3 of a RA procedure based on Msg. 4) to BS 102. Then, UE 101 may receive a Message 4 including DL data (i.e., a Message 4 of a RA procedure based on Msg. 4) from BS 102.
[0059] refer to Figure 2D In some embodiments, the RA procedure based on Msg.2 may be applied as a DL data transmission procedure between UE 101 and BS 102. Specifically, the procedure indication from BS 102 indicates to UE 101 that the RACH procedure based on Msg.2 is selected as the DL data transmission procedure. Then, after receiving the paging message 102P with the procedure indication, UE 101 may apply the RA procedure based on Msg.2 as the DL data transmission procedure.
[0060] Next, UE 101 may transmit a message 1 preamble (ie, a message 1 preamble of a RA procedure based on Mag. 2) to BS 102. Then, UE 101 may receive a message 2 including DL data (ie, a message 2 of a RA procedure based on Msg. 2) from BS 102.
[0061] In some embodiments, the preconfigured uplink resource process may include the step of preamble transmission, or may not have the step of preamble transmission. In detail, for the preconfigured uplink resource process without the step of preamble transmission, UE 101 may be given preconfigured uplink resources. Then, UE 101 may transmit UL data in the given preconfigured uplink resources, and receive DL data after transmitting on the given preconfigured uplink resources. On the other hand, for the preconfigured uplink resource process with the step of preamble transmission, UE 101 may be given preconfigured uplink resources and preamble information. Then, UE 101 may determine the preamble according to the preamble information, transmit the preamble and UL data in the given preconfigured uplink resources, and receive DL data after transmitting the given preconfigured uplink resources.
[0062] In some embodiments, for a conventional RA procedure, UE 101 may receive DL data or transmit UL data after UE 101 enters connected mode. In some embodiments, for a procedure in which DL information is transmitted in a paging message, the paging message may include UE identification information, and at least one of DL data information of UE 101 or scheduling information about DL data of UE 101.
[0063] refer to Figure 3 , the wireless communication system 100 may further include a BS 104. In some embodiments, the BS 102 may be a base station serving the UE 101, and the BS 104 may be the last serving base station.
[0064] refer to Figure 4A During the NAS process between UE 101, BS 102, BS 104 and CN 103, UE 103 may report capability information 101C to CN 103. The AMF entity of CN 103 may determine UE configuration information 103C of UE 101.
[0065] In some embodiments, UE 103 may enter an inactive state after the NAS process. Then, when CN 103 needs to transmit DL data to UE 101, the AMF entity of CN 103 may transmit a paging message 103P to BS 104, which is the last serving base station of UE 101. Paging message 103P may include the UE identity of UE 101 and UE configuration information 103C of UE 101.
[0066] Next, BS 104 may transmit a paging message 104P to BS 102. In some embodiments, paging message 104P may include a UE identity of UE 101 and UE configuration information 103C of UE 101. Therefore, BS 102 may determine a DL data transmission procedure of UE 101 according to UE configuration information 103C. In some embodiments, BS 104 may determine a DL data transmission procedure of UE 101 according to UE configuration information 103C, and paging message 104P includes an indication indicating the DL data transmission procedure of UE 101 to BS 102.
[0067] In some embodiments, the UE configuration information may include at least one of UE context information and UE capability information about the UE supporting the DL data transmission process. Similar to the above embodiments, the capability information of these embodiments may include ranking information of the priority of at least one DL data transmission process. Therefore, after receiving the capability information with ranking information from UE 101, the priority of at least one DL data transmission process of UE 101 may be indicated to the AMF entity of CN 103.
[0068] Next, BS 102 may transmit a paging message 102P to UE 101. Paging message 102P may include a process indication. After receiving paging message 102P, UE 101 may select a DL data transmission process according to the process indication, so that UE 101 may receive DL data from BS 102 according to the DL data transmission process.
[0069] refer to Figure 4B In some embodiments, the 2-step RACH procedure may be applied as a DL data transmission procedure between the UE 101 and the BS 102.
[0070] Next, UE 101 may transmit a Message A preamble (i.e., a Message A preamble of a 2-step RACH procedure) to BS 102 and a Message A UL PUSCH (i.e., a Message A UL PUSCH of a 2-step RACH procedure) to BS 102. UE 101 may then receive a Message B Response with DL data (i.e., a Message B preamble of a 2-step RACH procedure) from BS 102.
[0071] refer to Figure 4C In some embodiments, the RA procedure based on Msg.4 may be applied as a DL data transmission procedure between UE 101 and BS 102. Specifically, the procedure indication from BS 102 indicates to UE 101 that the RACH procedure based on Msg.4 is selected as the DL data transmission procedure. Then, after receiving the paging message 102P with the procedure indication, UE 101 may apply the RA procedure based on Msg.4 as the DL data transmission procedure.
[0072] Next, UE 101 may transmit a Message 1 preamble (i.e., a Message 1 preamble of a RA procedure based on Mag.
[0073] refer to Figure 4D In some embodiments, the RA procedure based on Msg.2 may be applied as a DL data transmission procedure between UE 101 and BS 102.
[0074] Next, UE 101 may transmit a message 1 preamble (ie, a message 1 preamble of a RA procedure based on Mag. 2) to BS 102. Then, UE 101 may receive a message 2 including DL data (ie, a message 2 of a RA procedure based on Msg. 2) from BS 102.
[0075] In some embodiments, the process indication may indicate step information at which DL data should be transmitted.
