Abstract
Description
[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0002] This PCT international application claims priority to U.S. patent application No. 17 / 083963, filed on October 29, 2020, which claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 929,512, filed on November 1, 2019, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entireties. Technical Field
[0003] The present invention relates generally to an article of footwear and, more particularly, to a modular outsole for attachment to an article of footwear. Background Art
[0004] This section provides background information related to the present disclosure and is not necessarily prior art.
[0005] Articles of footwear typically include a support structure (e.g., an upper) for securing the article of footwear to the foot or leg, and a sole structure for providing traction and cushioning between the support structure and the ground. The sole structure typically includes a layered structure extending between the ground and the support structure. For example, the sole structure may include a midsole and an outsole.
[0006] The midsole is typically positioned between the outsole and the support structure and provides cushioning for the foot. The midsole may include one or more cushioning components, such as foam elements and / or fluid-filled bladders. The outsole provides wear resistance and traction with the ground and may be formed from rubber or other materials that impart durability and wear resistance as well as enhanced traction with the ground.
[0007] While known outsoles have proven acceptable for their intended purposes, there remains a need for an outsole that can be easily adapted for a particular type of footwear or for a particular purpose. For example, conventional outsoles provide the wearer with little or no ability to modify or alter the shape and / or structure of the outsole, regardless of whether the outsole is for a conventional footwear article or for a prosthetic limb, such as a prosthetic blade. Consequently, the wearer cannot customize the outsole for a particular activity (i.e., sprinting versus long-distance running). BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0037] The details of one or more embodiments of the disclosure are set forth in the accompanying drawings and the description below. Other aspects, features, and advantages will become apparent from the description, drawings, and claims.
[0038] refer to Figure 1-4 , an outsole 100 for an article of footwear 10-10b is provided. In some cases, outsole 100 is provided as a separate component that can be modified depending on the type of footwear and / or intended use before being attached to article of footwear 10-10b. Figure 6-11 As described, outsole 100 can be used in conjunction with a prosthesis, such as prosthetic blade 30, or conventional articles of footwear 10a, 10b. When used in conjunction with prosthetic blade 30, prosthetic blade 30 can include a different size and / or shape than the size and / or shape of outsole 100 when used in conjunction with articles of footwear 10a, 10b.
[0039] Although Figure 1-4Although reference is made to outsole 100, features and elements of outsole 100 may be described relative to prosthetic blade 30 or articles of footwear 10a-10b (shown in phantom) to which outsole 100 may be attached. In particular, elements and features of outsole 100 may be described relative to forefoot region 12, midfoot region 14, and heel region 16 of prosthetic blade 30 or articles of footwear 10a-10b.
[0040] The forefoot region 12 may include a toe portion 12 corresponding to the toes. T , and a spherical portion 12 corresponding to the joint connecting the metatarsal bones and phalanges of the foot B Midfoot region 14 may correspond to the arch area of the foot, and heel region 16 may correspond to the back of the foot, including the calcaneus bone. Furthermore, outsole 100 may be described with respect to a front end 18 formed at the forward-most portion of forefoot region 12 and a rear end 20 formed at the rearward-most portion of heel region 16. Lateral and medial sides 22, 24 of articles of footwear 10a-10b correspond to the lateral and medial sides of the respective leg or foot to which articles of footwear 10a-10b are attached. Similarly, lateral and medial sides 22, 24 of prosthetic blade 30 correspond to the lateral and medial sides of the respective leg to which prosthetic blade 30 is attached.
[0041] refer to Figure 1 , outsole 100 includes a main body 102 and a plurality of inserts 104 disposed within main body 102. Inserts 104 are each configured to selectively attach traction elements 106 ( Figure 6-11 ) such as spikes or cleats are attached to the outsole 100. The body 102 may be formed of an elastic material, while the insert 104 is formed of a second material having a greater hardness than the first material. In some examples, the first material is polyether block amide (PEBA), such as that produced by Arkema SA. Insert 104 may be formed of any material suitable for engaging and supporting cleats 106, such as metal.
[0042] refer to Figure 1-4, body 102 can be described as including a top side 108, a bottom side 110 formed on an opposite side of top side 108, and a peripheral side 112 extending from top side 108 to bottom side 110 and defining the peripheral contours of body 102 and outsole 100. Typically, top side 108 comprises a continuous smooth surface and is configured to be attached to prosthetic blade 30 or article of footwear 10a-10b, as described below. In some cases, top side 108 is provided with one or more adhesives for bonding top side 108 to corresponding surfaces on the bottom of prosthetic blade 30 or article of footwear 10a-10b. Alternatively, outsole 100 can include a pre-applied adhesive covered by a removable sheet, such that a user can remove and discard the sheet to expose the adhesive before attaching outsole 100 to prosthetic blade 30 or article of footwear 10a-10b. Bottom side 110 is configured to engage the ground and includes one or more traction elements for providing traction, as described in more detail below.
[0043] like Figure 2 As shown, the length L of the main body 102 102 Along the longitudinal axis A 102 The body 102 extends from a first end 114 to a second end 116. As described in more detail below, when attached to one of the articles of footwear 10a-10b or the prosthetic blade 30, the first end 114 is configured to be disposed in the forefoot region 12 at the front end 18 of the article of footwear or the blade, and the second end 116 is configured to be disposed in the heel region 16 at the rear end 20. Thus, the first and second ends 114, 116 may also be referred to as the front and rear ends 114, 116, respectively, of the body 102.
[0044] Width W of the main body 102 102 Perpendicular to the longitudinal axis A 102 The body 102 extends from a first side 118 to a second side 120. When the outsole 100 is attached to the article of footwear 10a-10b or the prosthetic blade 30, the first side 118 is configured to be disposed along the lateral side 22 of the article of footwear 10a-10b or the blade 30, and the second side 120 is configured to be disposed along the medial side 24 of the article of footwear 10a-10b or the blade 30. Thus, the first and second sides 118, 120 may also be referred to as the lateral and medial sides 118, 120, respectively. In other words, the width W of the body 102 is 102 configured to extend completely across the width of the article of footwear 10a-10b or the prosthetic blade 30. Although the sides 118, 120 of the outsole are shown as being substantially straight, such that the outsole 100 has a constant width W 102 , but one or both sides may have a contour corresponding to the outer contour of the foot.
[0045] Continue to refer Figure 1-4, the body 102 includes a plurality of modules 122a-122d arranged in series, whereby adjacent ones of the modules 122a-122d are attached to each other along respective seams 124a-124c. Figure 1-3 As shown, the main body 102 includes a first module 122a disposed at the first end 114 of the main body 102, a second module 122b connected to the first module 122a along a first seam 124a, a third module 122c connected to the second module 122b along a second seam 124b, and a fourth module 122d disposed at the second end 120 of the main body 102 and connected to the third module 122c along a third seam 124c.
[0046] refer to Figure 3 12. In a cross-sectional view, each seam 124a-124c is formed by a portion of the body 102 that has a reduced thickness relative to an adjacent portion of the modules 122a-122d. The seams 124a-124c extend continuously from the first side 118 to the second side 120. Optionally, the seams may include perforations (not shown) formed therethrough. Thus, the seams 124a-124c are configured to function as tear lines, cut lines, or break lines along which adjacent modules 122a-122d can be separated from one another to change the overall length L of the body 102. 102 For example, any one or more of the modules 122a-122d can be separated from one or more of the other modules 122a-122d along one of the seams 124a-124c. As described below, this can be done in situations where it is desired to attach a shortened portion of the outsole 100 to the article of footwear 10a-10b or the prosthetic blade 30. Additionally, the seams 124a-124c can be used to allow the outsole 100 to be shortened along the longitudinal axis A. 102 flex to accommodate the bending of the outsole 100 during use (e.g. Figure 5 and 6 ) or become curved.
[0047] The length L of each module 122a-122d 122a -L 122d Extending from respective first ends 126a-126d facing the first end 114 of the body 102 to respective second ends 128a-128d facing the second end 116 of the body 102. Each module 122a-122d includes a length L along the bottom side 110 of the module 122a-122d from the first end 126a-126d to the second end 128a-128d. 122a -L 122d A corresponding series of spaced apart transversely extending (ie, side-to-side) ribs 130. In the example shown, the ribs 130 are evenly and continuously spaced from the first ends 126a-126d to the second ends 126a-126d.
[0048] One or more ribs 130 may extend from a first terminal end 132 at the first side 118 of the body 102 to a second terminal end 134 at the second side 120 of the body 102. In some cases, the one or more ribs 130 extend continuously from the first terminal end 132 to the second terminal end 134, while in other cases, some of the ribs 130 may be interrupted by one or more inserts 104. Figure 3 , each rib 130 has a triangular cross-sectional shape such that each rib extends from a base having a first width at bottom side 110 to a distal edge 131 facing away from bottom side 110. Here, the bases of adjacent ribs 130 are connected to one another along the length of rib 130 from first side 118 to second side 120. The sharp distal edges 131 of ribs 130 can serve as traction elements.
[0049] As described in more detail below with respect to each of the modules 122a-122d, the body 102 can include a plurality of cleats 136 formed along each of the side surfaces 118, 120. In the illustrated example, each cleat 136 is integrally formed as part of one of the terminal ends 132, 134 of one of the ribs 130. In particular, one of the cleats 136 can be formed at both terminal ends 132, 134 of one or more of the ribs 130. Here, the terminal ends 132, 134 formed by the cleats 136 are formed flush with the peripheral side 112 of the body 102 and are substantially perpendicular (90 degrees ± 5 degrees) to the top side 108 ( Figure 5 ).
[0050] like Figure 5 As best shown, the middle portion of each rib 130 has a substantially constant height H between the first terminal end 132 and the second terminal end 134. 130 In the case of including the cleats 136, the height H of the rib 130 is 130 At each terminal end 132, 134, the cleats 136 flare to a distal end 137 that projects from the bottom side 110 of the body 102. 102 122a-122d. For example, the cleats 136 may widen or curve around one of the inserts 104 adjacent the terminal ends 132, 134 of the ribs 130. In some cases, this causes the cleats 136 formed on the ribs at the first and second ends 126a-126d, 128a-128d to curve away from the respective ends 126a-126d, 128a-128d along which they are disposed. Consequently, the cleats 136 disposed at opposite ends of the modules 122a-122d will curve toward each other along the sides 118, 120 of the body 102.
[0051] Typically, each module 122a-122d includes a cleat 136 formed on terminal ends 132, 134 of a rib 130 disposed at first and second ends 126a-126d, 128a-128, such that each module 122a-122d is captured by a pair of ribs 130 including a cleat 136. Thus, regardless of where the modules 122a-122d are separated from one another, the remaining modules 122a-122d attached to the article of footwear 10a-10b or the prosthetic blade 30 will include a cleat 136 disposed at least at each end 126a-126d, 128a-128d. Optionally, one or more intermediate ribs 130 may also include a cleat 136, as described below.
[0052] Continue to refer Figure 1 and 2 , each module 122a-122d includes one or more inserts 104 configured for selectively attaching a cleat or spike 106 to the outsole 100. In the example shown, each insert 104 includes a helical threaded hole 140 configured for engagement with a corresponding threaded rod of a spike 106. In other examples, the inserts 104 may have other means for attaching to the spike 106. As described above, each insert 104 may be embedded in the material of the body 102 during the molding process. Figure 4 As shown, the insert 104 includes a radially extending flange 142 embedded in the material of the body 102. Alternatively, the body 102 can be pre-molded with a plurality of sockets 138 within which the inserts 104 are disposed. In some examples, after the body 102 is molded, the inserts 104 can be placed into the sockets 138 and attached using mechanical or chemical fastening means.
[0053] like Figure 2 As best shown in FIG, the inserts 104 are arranged along the bottom side 110 of the body 102 in a manner that allows the outsole to bend along the ribs 130. In particular, all of the inserts 104 are contained within the modules 122a-122d (i.e., disposed between the first ends 126a-126d and the second ends 128a-128d) such that the seams 124a-124c are uninterrupted. Thus, the body 102 can be freely bent at each seam 124a-124c. Additionally, the inserts 104 can be arranged in laterally aligned pairs disposed on opposing sides 118, 120 of the body 102, wherein adjacent pairs of inserts 104 are longitudinally separated from one another by a series of ribs 130 such that the ribs 130 allow the body 102 to bend in the middle portions of the modules 122a-122d between the pairs of inserts 104.
[0054] Now refer to Figure 1-3, the first module 122a is configured to be positioned adjacent to the front end 18 of the article of footwear 10a-10b or the prosthetic blade 30. As shown, the first end 126a of the first module 122a coincides with the first end 114 of the body 102, and the second end 128a is positioned in the middle portion of the body 102. The length L of the first module 122a 122a The first seam 124a corresponds to the length of the toes, allowing the first module 122a to flex with the toes when the outsole 100 is incorporated into the article of footwear 10a-10b. As shown, the first end 126a of the first module 122a can be arched, such that the first end 126a continuously bends around the body 102 and converges with the second end 128a on each side 118, 120. The first module 122a includes a pair of laterally aligned inserts 104 disposed between the first end 126a and the second end 128a. As shown, one of the ribs 130 disposed along the second end 128a includes a pair of cleats 136, each of which widens and curves toward the first end 126a.
[0055] Continue to refer Figure 1-3 , the length L of the second module 122b 122b The length L of the second module 122b extends from a first end 126b attached to the first module 122a along the first seam 124a to a second end 128b associated with the midfoot region 14 of the article of footwear 10a-10b or the prosthetic blade 30. 122b Greater than the length L of the first module 122a 122a Here, the second module 122b may be described as including a first portion 122b1 and a second portion 122b2, the first portion 122b1 being configured to be disposed on the spherical portion 122b1 of the article of footwear 10a-10b or the prosthetic blade 30. B , second portion 122b2 is configured to be positioned in the forward end of the midfoot region 14 of the articles of footwear 10a-10b or the prosthetic blade 30. First portion 122b1 of second module 122b includes a first set of inserts 104 separated from a second set of inserts 104 of second portion 122b2 by a plurality of ribs 130. The first set of inserts 104 is positioned adjacent to first end 126b and includes a central insert 104 positioned at first end 126b and a pair of laterally aligned inserts 104 spaced apart from first end 126b, such that the first set of inserts 104 are arranged in a triangular pattern. Second portion 122b2 includes a second set of inserts 104, including a pair of laterally aligned inserts 104 positioned adjacent to second end 128b. By separating the first set of inserts 104 from the second set of inserts 104, second module 122d can more easily flex along the midsection.
[0056] As described above, the second module 122b includes a first rib 130 disposed at the first end 126b and a second rib 130 disposed at the second end 128b, wherein each of the first rib 130 and the second rib 130 includes a pair of cleats 136 formed at respective terminal ends 132, 134 of the rib 130. As shown, the cleats 136 of the first and second ribs 130 widen and curve around adjacent inserts 104 toward the middle portion of the second module 122b. [0061] Now refer to Figure 6 and 7 , shows an outsole 100 incorporating a prosthetic blade 30. In some examples, the outsole 100 can be attached directly to the bottom surface of the prosthetic blade 30, wherein the width W of the body 102 is 102 Substantially the same width as the prosthetic blade 30 , the outsole 100 is completely attached along the bottom of the prosthetic blade 30 to provide a traction element to the blade 30 .
[0062] Alternatively, as Figure 6 and 7 As shown, a removable prosthetic foot 10 can be used to couple an outsole 100 to a prosthetic blade 30. Here, the prosthetic foot 10 includes a midsole 200 that provides one or more layers for cushioning and ground engagement, and a base 300 configured to secure the prosthetic foot 10 to the blade 30. As described above, the prosthetic foot 10 extends from a front end 18 to a rear end 20.
[0063] The midsole 200 is attached to a lower portion of the base frame 300 and includes a bottom surface 202 formed on a side of the midsole 200 opposite the base frame 300. As shown, at least a portion of the bottom surface 202 may be convex in a direction from the front end 18 to the rear end 20. Thus, the bottom surface 202 is configured to provide continuous engagement between the prosthetic foot 10 and the ground when the prosthetic foot 10 rolls forward on the ground during running or walking.
[0064] In use, the outsole 100 is configured to be attached to the bottom surface 202 of the midsole 200 to provide the prosthetic foot 10 with a resilient ground-engaging surface including the traction elements 106, 136. As described above, the outsole 100 can initially be provided in a unitary state, with each module 122a-122d attached to one another along respective seams 124a-124c. In the illustrated example, the outsole 100 is attached to the midsole 200 in a unitary state such that the outsole 100 extends continuously from the front end 18 to the rear end 20. Here, the ribs 130 and seams 124a-124c of the outsole 100 allow the outsole 100 to continuously flex along the convex bottom surface 202 of the midsole 200, so that the outsole 100 will mold to the contours of the bottom surface 202. Therefore, when attached to the midsole 200, the bottom side 110 of the outsole 100 will also be convex.
[0065] While the outsole 100 of the illustrated example is shown in an integral state, the outsole 100 of the present disclosure allows for one or more modules 122a-122d to be separated from the outsole 100 before or after the outsole 100 is attached to the midsole 200. For example, the outsole 100 can be separated along any one or more seams 124a-124c so that one or more modules 122a-122d can be attached to corresponding portions of the midsole 200 to provide the midsole 200 with the insert 104.
[0066] Specific reference Figure 8 and 9 , provides an article of footwear 10a comprising an outsole 100, a midsole 200a, and a base frame 300a. Here, the article of footwear 10a is embodied as a conventional shoe, wherein the base frame 300a is an upper 300a, which is configured to secure a user's foot to the midsole 200a. The upper 300a is attached to the midsole 200a and includes an inner surface defining an interior space configured to accommodate and secure the foot to support it on the midsole 200a. The upper 300a can be formed from one or more materials that are stitched or bonded together to form an interior space. Suitable materials for the upper 300 may include, but are not limited to, mesh, textiles, foam, leather, and synthetic leather. The materials can be selected and positioned to impart durability, breathability, wear resistance, flexibility, and comfort.
[0067] In use, such as Figure 9As shown, the outsole 100 can be initially provided in a unitary state. The top side 108 of the body 102 is then prepared for attachment to the bottom surface 202 of the midsole 200a, either by removing a cover sheet from the top side 108 to expose a pre-applied adhesive, or by applying adhesive to the top side 108 and / or bottom surface 202. The outsole 100 is then positioned on the bottom surface 202 of the midsole 200a, such that the first module 122a is positioned at the front end 18, the fourth module 122d is positioned at the rear end 20, and the first and second sides 118, 120 of the outsole extend along the lateral and medial sides 22, 24 of the midsole 202a. Alternatively, the outsole 100 can be attached to the midsole 200a in a conventional manner during the manufacture of the article of footwear 10a by bonding the outsole 100 to the midsole 200a using a suitable adhesive.
[0068] Unlike the midsole 200 discussed above with respect to the prosthetic foot 10, the bottom surface 202 of the midsole 200a of the article of footwear 10a can be substantially flat, including slight curvature at the front end 18 and the rear end 20 to accommodate the natural movement of the foot during walking and running. Thus, when the outsole 100 is attached to the bottom surface 202 of the midsole 200a, the first and fourth modules 122a, 122d can bend upward from the first and third seams 124a, 124c, while the second and third modules 122c, 122d remain substantially flat along the middle portion of the midsole 200a. However, in the event that the midsole 200a includes contours along the middle portion, the ribs 130 of the second and third modules 122c, 122d will allow the second and third modules 122c, 122d to flex to accommodate the contours.
[0069] Specific reference Figure 10 and 11 , provides an article of footwear 10b comprising an outsole 100a, a midsole 200a, and a chassis 300a. In this example, the outsole 100a is separated along the second seam 124b, and the third and fourth modules 122c, 122d are discarded. Here, the first module 122a and the second module 122b are attached to the bottom surface 202 of the midsole 200a adjacent the front end 18.
