Abstract

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described, wherein the wireless communications system may be configured to support evaluation of beam correlations (such as correlation of receive directivities) in different component carriers, which may be in the same frequency band or in different frequency bands. For example, a first device may simultaneously transmit different reference signals using different component carriers, and a second device may receive the different reference signals. The second device may determine a beam correlation metric, which may include various measures of how correlated the receive directivities or codebooks are for different reference signals in different frequency bands. Such evaluations may be used to support various configurations of the first device and the second device related to inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation.

[0003] introduction

[0004] The following relates to wireless communications and, more particularly, to techniques for managing beam correlation.

[0005] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content, such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcasting, etc. These systems may be able to support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power). Examples of such multiple access systems include fourth generation (4G) systems (such as long term evolution (LTE) systems, advanced LTE (LTE-A) systems, or LTE-A Pro systems), and fifth generation (5G) systems, which may be referred to as new radio (NR) systems. These systems may use various technologies, such as code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), or discrete Fourier transform extended orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM). A wireless multiple access communication system may include one or more base stations or one or more network access nodes, each base station or network access node simultaneously supporting the communication of multiple communication devices, which may be referred to as user equipment (UE) in addition.

[0121] Detailed Description

[0122] The wireless communication system may support signaling in various frequency bands, which may correspond to various organizations of radio frequency (RF) or other frequency bands. In some examples, signaling in different frequency bands or portions thereof (e.g., different component carriers) may experience different signal propagation characteristics or distortions, such as different power angle delay distributions (PADPs) or other phenomena that cause signals to be distorted differently at different frequencies. For example, communications in relatively high frequencies may be more sensitive to environmental factors (such as oxygen, water vapor, or other environmental properties of materials encountered during propagation). Such differences may be associated with signals having different attenuation or directional characteristics at different frequencies, as well as other differences. In various examples, communications in different frequencies transmitted by a transmitting device in the same direction (e.g., the same direction with the highest transmit power) may or may not be received at the receiving device in the same or similar direction with the highest received power.

[0123] Some wireless communication systems may employ carrier aggregation techniques, in which communications are conveyed simultaneously or concurrently between devices using multiple component carriers. In some examples, such techniques may be configured to increase information throughput between devices compared to communications using a single component carrier. Carrier aggregation techniques may be applied across one or more frequency bands. In some examples, carrier aggregation techniques performed using component carriers in the same frequency band may be referred to as "intra-band" carrier aggregation. In some examples, carrier aggregation techniques performed using component carriers in different frequency bands (e.g., two or more frequency bands that do not overlap in the frequency domain) may be referred to as "inter-band" carrier aggregation.

[0124] In some cases, carrier aggregation may rely on or may be otherwise performed when signals using different frequency bands are received in the same or similar directions (e.g., directions with the highest received power within a threshold separation angle, using receive beams or directions that are well correlated). For example, carrier aggregation may be associated with favorable spectral efficiency when the receive directions at the receiving device may use the same cluster in the channel, the same or similar set of beamforming weights that direct peak energy in the same or similar directions, the same or similar modulation and coding scheme (MCS), or other relevant configurations or characteristics at the receiving device. When these criteria or other criteria for supporting carrier aggregation are not met (e.g., when beams or directions of different frequency bands are not well correlated), it may be preferable to perform carrier aggregation using different sets of transmit or receive beams, or to refrain from performing communications according to carrier aggregation. Therefore, procedures and metrics for evaluating beam correlation may be beneficial in supporting various aspects of carrier aggregation, including various examples of inter-band carrier aggregation or intra-band carrier aggregation.

[0125] According to the technology disclosed herein, each device of a wireless communication system may be configured to support an evaluation of beam correlation (e.g., correlation of reception directivity), which may be used to support various configurations (e.g., carrier aggregation configurations) related to inter-band carrier aggregation or intra-band carrier aggregation. For example, a first device (e.g., a transmitting device) may transmit different reference signals using different component carriers (e.g., in different frequency bands, in the same frequency band) at the same time (e.g., concurrently, at the same time, in overlapping time intervals), where the transmission may be performed on a transmit beam that may or may not be aligned with the first device. A second device (e.g., a receiving device) may receive different reference signals, which may include determining, for each of the reference signals, a peak reception direction for the corresponding reference signal, or determining a beamforming weight set associated with the peak received power of the corresponding reference signal. The second device may determine a beam correlation metric, which may include various measurements of how the reception directions or beam weights are correlated for different reference signals of different component carriers. The second device may transmit a response to the first device, which may include the beam correlation metric itself, or some other indicator associated with the beam correlation (e.g., whether the second device will support inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation using different transmit beams or receive beams). One or both of the first device or the second device may then perform various communication configurations related to carrier aggregation, such as determining whether to perform or refrain from performing communications according to an inter-band carrier aggregation configuration or an intra-band carrier aggregation configuration.

[0126] Certain aspects of the subject matter described herein can be implemented to achieve one or more results. The described techniques can support the results of determining carrier aggregation parameters by increasing reliability and reducing latency, among other results.

[0127] Various aspects of the present disclosure are initially described in the context of examples of wireless communication systems and signaling between devices in the wireless communication system that can support evaluation of beam correlation for carrier aggregation. Various aspects of the present disclosure are further illustrated and described by and with reference to apparatus diagrams, system diagrams, and flow charts related to beam correlation for carrier aggregation.

[0128] Figure 1 An example of a wireless communication system 100 supporting beam correlation for carrier aggregation according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. The wireless communication system 100 may include one or more base stations 105, one or more UEs 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may be an LTE network, an LTE-A network, an LTE-A Pro network, or a new radio (NR) network. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may support enhanced broadband communications, ultra-reliable (e.g., mission-critical) communications, low latency communications, communications with low-cost and low-complexity devices, or any combination thereof.

[0129] The base stations 105 may be dispersed throughout a geographic area to form the wireless communication system 100, and may be different forms of devices or devices with different capabilities. The base stations 105 and the UEs 115 may communicate wirelessly via one or more communication links 125. Each base station 105 may provide a coverage area 110 over which the UEs 115 and the base stations 105 may establish one or more communication links 125. The coverage area 110 may be an example of a geographic area over which the base stations 105 and the UEs 115 may support communication of signals according to one or more radio access technologies.

[0130] The UEs 115 may be dispersed throughout the coverage area 110 of the wireless communication system 100, and each UE 115 may be stationary or mobile, or stationary and mobile at different times. The UEs 115 may be different forms of devices or devices with different capabilities. Figure 1 Some example UEs 115 are illustrated in FIG. 1. The UEs 115 described herein may be capable of communicating with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115, base stations 105, or network equipment (e.g., core network nodes, relay devices, integrated access and backhaul (IAB) nodes, or other network equipment), such as Figure 1 as shown in .

[0131] Each base station 105 may communicate with the core network 130, or communicate with each other, or both. For example, the base station 105 may interface with the core network 130 via one or more backhaul links 120 (e.g., via S1, N2, N3 or other interfaces). The base stations 105 may communicate with each other directly (e.g., directly between the base stations 105), or indirectly (e.g., via the core network 130), or directly and indirectly on the backhaul link 120 (e.g., via X2, Xn or other interfaces). In some examples, the backhaul link 120 may be or include one or more wireless links. The UE 115 may communicate with the core network 130 via a communication link 155.

[0132] One or more of the base stations 105 described herein may include or may be referred to by a person of ordinary skill in the art as a base transceiver station, a radio base station, an access point, a radio transceiver, a B node, an evolved B node (eNB), a next generation B node or a gigabit B node (any of which may be referred to as a gNB), a home B node, a home evolved B node, an IAB node, or other suitable terminology.

[0133] UE 115 may include or may be referred to as a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a handheld device, or a subscriber device, or some other suitable term, where a "device" may also be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client, etc. UE 115 may also include or may be referred to as a personal electronic device, such as a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a tablet computer, a laptop computer, or a personal computer. In some examples, UE 115 may include or be referred to as a wireless local loop (WLL) station, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, an Internet of Everything (IoE) device, a machine type communication (MTC) device, or a consumer end equipment (CPE), etc., which may be implemented in various objects such as appliances or vehicles, meters, etc.

[0134] The UE 115 described herein may be able to communicate with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115, which may sometimes act as relays, as well as base stations 105 and network equipment including macro eNBs or gNBs, small cell eNBs or gNBs, relay base stations, etc. Figure 1 as shown in .

[0135] The UE 115 and the base station 105 may communicate wirelessly with each other via one or more communication links 125 on one or more carriers or component carriers. The term "carrier" or "component carrier" may refer to a set of radio frequency spectrum resources having a defined physical layer structure for supporting the communication link 125. For example, a carrier for the communication link 125 may include a portion of a radio frequency spectrum band (e.g., a bandwidth portion (BWP)) that operates according to one or more physical layer channels for a given radio access technology (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, 5G-NR). Each physical layer channel may carry acquisition signaling (e.g., synchronization signals, system information), control signaling for coordinating carrier operations, user data, or other signaling. The wireless communication system 100 may support communication with the UE 115 using carrier aggregation or multi-carrier operation. The UE 115 may be configured to have multiple downlink component carriers and one or more uplink component carriers according to a carrier aggregation configuration. Carrier aggregation may be used in conjunction with both frequency division duplex (FDD) and time division duplex (TDD) component carriers.

[0136] In some examples (e.g., in a carrier aggregation configuration), a carrier may also have acquisition signaling or control signaling that coordinates the operation of other carriers. A carrier may be associated with a frequency channel (e.g., an absolute radio frequency channel number (ARFCN), an evolved universal mobile telecommunications system terrestrial radio access (E-UTRA) absolute radio frequency channel number (EARFCN), a new radio absolute radio frequency channel number (NR-ARFCN)) and may be located according to a channel grid for discovery by UE 115. In some examples, different frequency bands may be associated with or otherwise organized into different sets or groups of frequency channels (e.g., different sets of ARFCNs), and different frequency bands may not overlap in the frequency domain. A carrier may operate in a standalone mode in which initial acquisition and connection may be performed by UE 115 via the carrier, or a carrier may operate in a non-standalone mode in which a connection is anchored using a different carrier (e.g., a different carrier of the same or different radio access technology).

[0137] The communication link 125 shown in the wireless communication system 100 may include an uplink transmission from the UE 115 to the base station 105, or a downlink transmission from the base station 105 to the UE 115. A carrier may carry downlink or uplink communications (e.g., in an FDD mode), or may be configured to carry both downlink and uplink communications (e.g., in a TDD mode).

[0138] A carrier may be associated with a particular bandwidth of a radio frequency spectrum, and in some examples, the carrier bandwidth may be referred to as a "system bandwidth" of the carrier or wireless communication system 100. For example, the carrier bandwidth may be one of several determined bandwidths (e.g., 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, 80, or 200 megahertz (MHz)) of a carrier of a particular radio access technology. Devices (e.g., base stations 105, UEs 115, or both) of the wireless communication system 100 may have a hardware configuration that supports communications on a particular carrier bandwidth, or may be configurable to support communications on one of a set of carrier bandwidths. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may include a base station 105 or UE 115 that supports simultaneous communications via carriers associated with multiple carrier bandwidths. In some examples, each served UE 115 may be configured to operate on a portion (e.g., subband, BWP) or all of a carrier bandwidth.

[0139] The electromagnetic spectrum is typically subdivided into various classes, bands, channels, etc. based on frequency / wavelength. In 5G NR, two initial operating bands have been identified as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz–7.125 GHz) and FR2 (24.25 GHz–52.6 GHz). It should be understood that although a portion of FR1 is greater than 6 GHz, FR1 is often (interchangeably) referred to as the "sub-6 GHz band" in various documents and articles. Similar naming issues sometimes arise with respect to FR2, which is often (interchangeably) referred to as the "millimeter wave" band in various documents and articles, although it is different from the extremely high frequency (EHF) band (30 GHz–300 GHz) identified as the "millimeter wave" band by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

[0140] Frequencies between FR1 and FR2 are generally referred to as mid-band frequencies. Recent 5G NR research has identified the operating bands of these mid-band frequencies as frequency range designation FR3 (7.125GHz–24.25GHz). The frequency bands falling within FR3 can inherit FR1 characteristics and / or FR2 characteristics, and therefore can effectively extend the features of FR1 and / or FR2 to mid-band frequencies. In addition, higher frequency bands are currently being explored to extend 5G NR operations to above 52.6GHz. For example, three higher operating bands have been identified as frequency range designations FR4a or FR4-1 (52.6GHz–71GHz), FR4 (52.6GHz–114.25GHz), and FR5 (114.25GHz–300GHz). Each of these higher frequency bands falls within the EHF band.

[0141] In view of the above aspects, unless otherwise specifically stated, it should be understood that if used in this document, the term "sub-6 GHz" and the like can broadly refer to frequencies that can be less than 6 GHz, can be within FR1, or can include mid-band frequencies. In addition, unless otherwise specifically stated, it should be understood that if used in this document, the term "millimeter wave" and the like can broadly refer to frequencies that can include mid-band frequencies, can be within FR2, FR4, FR4-a or FR4-1 and / or FR5, or can be within the EHF band.

[0142] The signal waveform transmitted on the carrier may include multiple subcarriers (e.g., using multi-carrier modulation (MCM) techniques, such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM DFT-S-OFDM). In a system using MCM technology, a resource element may include a code element period (e.g., the duration of a modulation code element) and a subcarrier, where the code element period and the subcarrier spacing are inversely related. The number of bits carried by each resource element may depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme, the coding rate of the modulation scheme, or both). Thus, the more resource elements received by UE 115 and the higher the order of the modulation scheme, the higher the data rate of UE 115 can be. Wireless communication resources may refer to a combination of radio frequency spectrum resources, time resources, and spatial resources (e.g., spatial layers or beams), and the use of multiple spatial layers may further improve the data rate or data integrity of communication with UE 115.

[0143] One or more parameter designs for a carrier may be supported, where the parameter designs may include subcarrier spacing (Δf) and cyclic prefixes. A carrier may be divided into one or more BWPs with the same or different parameter designs. In some examples, a UE 115 may be configured with multiple BWPs. In some examples, a single BWP for a carrier may be active at a given time, and communications for a UE 115 may be limited to the one or more active BWPs.

[0144] The time interval of the base station 105 or the UE 115 can be expressed as a multiple of a basic time unit, and the basic time unit can be, for example, a sampling period T s =1 / (Δf max ·N f ) seconds, where Δf max It can represent the maximum supported subcarrier spacing, and N f The maximum supported discrete Fourier transform (DFT) size may be indicated. Time intervals of communication resources may be organized according to radio frames, each having a specified duration (e.g., 10 milliseconds (ms)). Each radio frame may be identified by a system frame number (SFN) (e.g., ranging from 0 to 1023).

[0145] Each frame may include a plurality of consecutively numbered subframes or time slots, and each subframe or time slot may have the same duration. In some examples, a frame may be divided into subframes (e.g., in the time domain), and each subframe may be further divided into a number of time slots. Alternatively, each frame may include a variable number of time slots, and the number of time slots may depend on the subcarrier spacing. Each time slot may include a number of code element periods (e.g., depending on the length of the cyclic prefix added before each code element period). In some wireless communication systems 100, a time slot may be further divided into a plurality of mini-time slots containing one or more code elements. Excluding the cyclic prefix, each code element period may contain one or more (e.g., N f The duration of a symbol period may depend on the subcarrier spacing or the operating band.

[0146] A subframe, slot, mini-slot, or symbol may be the smallest scheduling unit (e.g., in the time domain) of the wireless communication system 100 and may be referred to as a transmission time interval (TTI). In some examples, the TTI duration (e.g., the number of symbol periods in a TTI) may be variable. Additionally or alternatively, the smallest scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 may be dynamically selected (e.g., in bursts of shortened TTIs (sTTIs)).

[0147] Physical channels may be multiplexed on a carrier according to various techniques. Physical control channels and physical data channels may be multiplexed on a downlink carrier, for example, using one or more of a time division multiplexing (TDM) technique, a frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technique, or a hybrid TDM-FDM technique. A control region (e.g., a control resource set (CORESET)) for a physical control channel may be defined by a number of symbol periods and may extend across a system bandwidth or a subset of a system bandwidth of a carrier. One or more control regions (e.g., CORESETs) may be configured for a set of UEs 115. For example, one or more of the UEs 115 may monitor or search a control region for control information according to one or more search space sets, and each search space set may include one or more control channel candidates in one or more aggregation levels arranged in a cascaded manner. An aggregation level for a control channel candidate may refer to the number of control channel resources (e.g., control channel elements (CCEs)) associated with coded information for a control information format having a given payload size. The search space sets may include a common search space set configured for transmitting control information to multiple UEs 115 and a UE-specific search space set for transmitting control information to a specific UE 115 .

[0148] Each base station 105 may provide communication coverage via one or more cells (e.g., macro cells, small cells, hot spots, or other types of cells, or any combination thereof). The term "cell" may refer to a logical communication entity used to communicate with a base station 105 (e.g., on a carrier), and may be associated with an identifier (e.g., a physical cell identifier (PCID), a virtual cell identifier (VCID), or other) used to distinguish adjacent cells. In some examples, a cell may also refer to a geographic coverage area 110 or a portion of a geographic coverage area 110 (e.g., a sector) on which a logical communication entity operates. The range of such a cell may range from a smaller area (e.g., a structure, a subset of a structure) to a larger area depending on various factors (such as the capabilities of the base station 105). For example, a cell may be or include a building, a subset of a building, or an external space between or overlapping a geographic coverage area 110, as well as other examples.

[0149] A macro cell generally covers a relatively large geographic area (e.g., several kilometers in radius) and may allow unrestricted access to UEs 115 that have service subscriptions with a network provider that supports the macro cell. A small cell may be associated with a lower power base station 105 (compared to a macro cell), and the small cell may operate in the same or different (e.g., licensed, unlicensed) frequency band as the macro cell. A small cell may provide unrestricted access to UEs 115 that have service subscriptions with a network provider, or may provide restricted access to UEs 115 associated with the small cell (e.g., UEs 115 in a closed subscriber group (CSG), UEs 115 associated with users in a home or office). A base station 105 may support one or more cells and may also support communication on one or more cells using one or more component carriers. In some examples, a carrier may support multiple cells, and different cells may be configured according to different protocol types (e.g., MTC, narrowband IoT (NB-IoT), enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB)) that may provide access to different types of devices.

[0150] In some examples, base stations 105 may be mobile and thus provide communication coverage for mobile geographic coverage areas 110. In some examples, different geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may overlap, but the different geographic coverage areas 110 may be supported by the same base station 105. In other examples, overlapping geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may be supported by different base stations 105. The wireless communication system 100 may include, for example, a heterogeneous network in which different types of base stations 105 provide coverage for various geographic coverage areas 110 using the same or different radio access technologies.

[0151] The wireless communication system 100 may support synchronous or asynchronous operation. For synchronous operation, the base stations 105 may have similar frame timing, and transmissions from different base stations 105 may be approximately aligned in time. For asynchronous operation, the base stations 105 may have different frame timing, and transmissions from different base stations 105 may not be aligned in time in some examples. The techniques described herein may be used for synchronous or asynchronous operation.

[0152] Some UEs 115, such as MTC or IoT devices, may be low-cost or low-complexity devices and may provide automated communication between machines (e.g., via machine-to-machine (M2M) communication). M2M communication or MTC may refer to data communication technology that allows devices to communicate with each other or with a base station 105 without human intervention. In some examples, M2M communication or MTC may include communications from devices that integrate sensors or meters to measure or capture information and relay such information to a central server or application that utilizes the information or presents the information to a person interacting with the application. Some UEs 115 may be designed to collect information or implement automated behavior of machines or other devices. Examples of applications for MTC devices include: smart metering, inventory monitoring, water level monitoring, equipment monitoring, health care monitoring, field survival monitoring, weather and geographic event monitoring, queue management and tracking, remote security sensing, physical access control, and transaction-based commercial charging.

[0153] The wireless communication system 100 may be configured to support ultra-reliable communication or low latency communication or various combinations thereof. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may be configured to support ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) or mission-critical communication. UE 115 may be designed to support ultra-reliable, low latency or critical functions (e.g., mission-critical functions). Ultra-reliable communication may include private communication or group communication, and may be supported by one or more mission-critical services (such as mission-critical push-to-talk (MCPTT), mission-critical video (MCVideo), or mission-critical data (MCData). Support for mission-critical functions may include prioritization of services, and mission-critical services may be used for public safety or general commercial applications. The terms ultra-reliable, low latency, critical mission, and ultra-reliable low latency may be used interchangeably herein.

[0154] In some examples, UE 115 may also be able to communicate directly with other UE 115 over a device-to-device (D2D) communication link 135 (e.g., using a peer-to-peer (P2P) or D2D protocol). One or more UEs 115 utilizing D2D communication may be within a geographic coverage area 110 of a base station 105. Other UEs 115 in such a group may be outside the geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105, or may not be able to receive transmissions from the base station 105 for other reasons. In some examples, each group of UEs 115 communicating via D2D communication may utilize a one-to-many (1:M) system, wherein each UE 115 transmits to each other UE 115 in the group. In some examples, the base station 105 facilitates the scheduling of resources for D2D communication. In other cases, D2D communication is performed between each UE 115 without involving the base station 105.

[0155] In some systems, the D2D communication link 135 can be an example of a communication channel (such as a sidelink communication channel) between vehicles (e.g., UE 115). In some examples, the vehicles can communicate using vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, or some combination of these communications. The vehicles can signal information related to traffic conditions, signal scheduling, weather, safety, emergency situations, or any other information related to the V2X system. In some examples, vehicles in the V2X system can use vehicle-to-network (V2N) communications to communicate with roadside infrastructure (such as roadside units), or with the network, or both via one or more network nodes (e.g., base station 105).

[0156] The core network 130 may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 130 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) or a 5G core (5GC), and the EPC or 5GC may include at least one control plane entity (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME), an access and mobility management function (AMF)) for managing access and mobility, and at least one user plane entity (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW), a packet data network (PDN) gateway (P-GW), or a user plane function (UPF)) for routing packets or interconnecting to an external network. The control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management of UE 115 served by a base station 105 associated with the core network 130. User IP packets may be delivered via a user plane entity, which may provide IP address allocation and other functions. The user plane entity may be connected to a network operator IP service 150. Operator IP services 150 may include access to the Internet, an intranet, an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), or packet-switched streaming services.

[0157] Some network devices (such as base stations 105) may include subcomponents, such as access network entities 140, which may be examples of access node controllers (ANCs). Each access network entity 140 may communicate with each UE 115 through one or more other access network transport entities 145, which may be referred to as radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmission / reception points (TRPs). Each access network transport entity 145 may include one or more antenna panels. In some configurations, the various functions of each access network entity 140 or base station 105 may be distributed across various network devices (e.g., radio heads and ANCs) or merged into a single network device (e.g., base station 105).

[0158] The wireless communication system 100 may operate using one or more frequency bands, typically in the range of 300 MHz to 300 gigahertz (GHz). In general, the 300 MHz to 3 GHz region is referred to as the ultra-high frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the wavelengths range from about 1 decimeter to 1 meter long. UHF waves may be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features, but these waves may penetrate various structures sufficiently for macro cells to provide service to UEs 115 located indoors. Transmissions using UHF waves may be associated with smaller antennas and shorter ranges (e.g., less than 100 kilometers) than transmissions using smaller frequencies and longer waves in the high frequency (HF) or very high frequency (VHF) portions of the spectrum below 300 MHz.

[0159] The wireless communication system 100 may also operate in a super high frequency (SHF) region using a frequency band from 3 GHz to 30 GHz (also known as a centimeter band) or in an EHF region of the spectrum (e.g., from 30 GHz to 300 GHz) (also known as a millimeter band (e.g., a millimeter wave band)). In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may support millimeter wave (mmW) communications between the UE 115 and the base station 105, and the EHF antennas of the corresponding devices may be smaller and more closely spaced than UHF antennas. In some examples, this may facilitate the use of antenna arrays within the device. However, the propagation of EHF transmissions may be subject to even greater atmospheric attenuation and a shorter range than SHF or UHF transmissions. The techniques disclosed herein may be employed across transmissions using one or more different frequency regions, and the use of frequency bands specified across these frequency regions may vary by country or regulatory agency.

[0160] The wireless communication system 100 may utilize both licensed and unlicensed radio frequency spectrum bands. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may employ licensed assisted access (LAA), LTE unlicensed (LTE-U) radio access technology, or NR technology in an unlicensed band (such as the 5 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band). When operating in an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band, devices (such as base stations 105 and UEs 115) may employ carrier sensing for conflict detection and avoidance. In some examples, operations in an unlicensed band may be based on a carrier aggregation configuration (e.g., LAA) in coordination with component carriers operating in a licensed band. Operations in an unlicensed spectrum may include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, P2P transmissions, or D2D transmissions, among others.

[0161] The base station 105 or UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas, which can be used to employ technologies such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, or beamforming. The antennas of the base station 105 or UE 115 may be located in one or more antenna arrays or antenna panels that can support MIMO operations or transmit or receive beamforming. For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be co-located at an antenna assembly (such as an antenna tower). In some examples, the antennas or antenna arrays associated with the base station 105 may be located at different geographical locations. The base station 105 may have an antenna array having antenna ports of several rows and columns that the base station 105 can use to support beamforming for communications with the UE 115. Similarly, the UE 115 may have one or more antenna arrays that can support various MIMO or beamforming operations. Additionally or alternatively, the antenna panel may support radio frequency beamforming for signals transmitted via the antenna ports.

[0162] The base station 105 or UE 115 can use MIMO communication to utilize multipath signal propagation and improve spectral efficiency by transmitting or receiving multiple signals via different spatial layers. Such technology may be referred to as spatial multiplexing. For example, the transmitting device may transmit multiple signals via different antennas or different antenna combinations. Similarly, the receiving device may receive multiple signals via different antennas or different antenna combinations. Each of the multiple signals may be referred to as a separate spatial stream and may carry bits associated with the same data stream (e.g., the same codeword) or different data streams (e.g., different codewords). Different spatial layers may be associated with different antenna ports for channel measurement and reporting. MIMO technology includes single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO), in which multiple spatial layers are transmitted to the same receiving device; and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO), in which multiple spatial layers are transmitted to multiple devices.

[0163] Beamforming (which may also be referred to as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception) is a signal processing technique that may be used at a transmitting device or a receiving device (e.g., a base station 105, a UE 115) to shape or steer an antenna beam (e.g., a transmit beam, a receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting device and the receiving device. Beamforming may be achieved by combining signals communicated via antenna elements of an antenna array so that some signals propagating at a particular orientation relative to the antenna array experience constructive interference, while other signals experience destructive interference. Adjustments to signals communicated via antenna elements may include the transmitting device or the receiving device applying an amplitude offset, a phase offset, or both to signals carried via antenna elements associated with the device. Adjustments associated with each antenna element may be defined by a set of beamforming weights associated with a particular orientation (e.g., relative to an antenna array of the transmitting device or the receiving device, or relative to some other orientation), or by entries from a beamforming codebook (e.g., analog beamforming codebook entries) that may be associated with a set of beamforming weights or other sets of parameters.

[0164] The base station 105 or the UE 115 may use beam sweeping techniques as part of a beamforming operation. For example, the base station 105 may use multiple antennas or antenna arrays (e.g., antenna panels) to perform beamforming operations for directional communication with the UE 115. Some signals (e.g., synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) may be transmitted multiple times by the base station 105 in different directions or according to different codebooks. For example, the base station 105 may transmit signals according to different sets of beamforming weights associated with different transmission directions. Transmissions in different beam directions may be used (e.g., by a transmitting device (such as the base station 105) or a receiving device (such as the UE 115)) to identify a beam direction used by the base station 105 for later transmission or reception.

[0165] Some signals, such as data signals associated with a particular recipient device, may be transmitted by base station 105 in a single beam direction, e.g., a direction associated with a recipient device, such as UE 115. In some examples, a beam direction associated with transmissions along a single beam direction may be determined based on signals transmitted in one or more beam directions. For example, UE 115 may receive one or more signals transmitted by base station 105 in different directions and may report to base station 105 an indication of the signal received by UE 115 with the highest signal quality or other acceptable signal quality.

[0166] In some examples, transmission by a device (e.g., by a base station 105 or a UE 115) may be performed using multiple beam directions, and the device may use a combination of digital precoding or radio frequency beamforming to generate a combined beam for transmission (e.g., from the base station 105 to the UE 115). The UE 115 may report feedback indicating precoding weights for one or more beam directions, and the feedback may correspond to a configured number of beams across the system bandwidth or one or more subbands. The base station 105 may transmit a reference signal that may be precoded or uncoded (e.g., a cell-specific reference signal (CRS), a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS)). The UE 115 may provide feedback for beam selection, which may be a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) or codebook-based feedback (e.g., a multi-panel type codebook, a linear combination type codebook, a port selection type codebook). Although these techniques are described with reference to signals transmitted by base station 105 in one or more directions, UE 115 may use similar techniques to transmit signals multiple times in different directions (e.g., to identify a beam direction for subsequent transmission or reception by UE 115) or to transmit signals in a single direction (e.g., to transmit data to a receiving device).

[0167] A receiving device (e.g., UE 115) may try multiple reception configurations (e.g., directional listening) when receiving various signals (such as synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) from base station 105. For example, the receiving device may try multiple reception directions by receiving via different antenna subarrays, processing received signals according to different antenna subarrays, receiving according to different receive beamforming weight sets (e.g., different directional listening weight sets, different receive codebooks) applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, or processing received signals according to different receive beamforming weight sets applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, any of which may be referred to as "listening" according to different reception configurations or reception directions. In some examples, the receiving device may use a single reception configuration to receive along a single beam direction (e.g., when receiving a data signal). A single receive configuration may be aligned on a beam direction determined based on listening according to different receive configuration directions (e.g., a beam direction determined to have the highest signal strength, highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), or other acceptable signal quality based on listening according to multiple beam directions).

[0168] The wireless communication system 100 may be a packet-based network that operates according to a layered protocol stack. In the user plane, the communication of the bearer or packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer may be IP-based. The radio link control (RLC) layer may perform packet segmentation and reassembly to communicate on a logical channel. The media access control (MAC) layer may perform priority handling and multiplex logical channels into transport channels. The MAC layer may also use error detection techniques, error correction techniques, or both to support retransmission of the MAC layer to improve link efficiency. In the control plane, the radio resource control (RRC) protocol layer may provide the establishment, configuration, and maintenance of an RRC connection that supports radio bearers of user plane data between UE 115 and base station 105 or core network 130. At the physical layer, transport channels may be mapped to physical channels.

[0169] UE 115 and base station 105 may support retransmission of data to increase the likelihood that the data is successfully received. Hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) feedback is a technique for increasing the likelihood that data is correctly received on communication link 125. HARQ may include a combination of error detection (e.g., using cyclic redundancy check (CRC)), forward error correction (FEC), and retransmission (e.g., automatic repeat request (ARQ)). HARQ may improve the throughput of the MAC layer in poor radio conditions (e.g., low signal-to-noise ratio conditions). In some examples, a device may support simultaneous slot HARQ feedback, wherein the device may provide HARQ feedback in a specific time slot for data received in a previous symbol in the time slot. In other cases, the device may provide HARQ feedback in a subsequent time slot or according to some other time interval.

[0170] According to the examples disclosed herein, the devices of the wireless communication system 100 may be configured to support an evaluation of beam correlation (e.g., correlation of reception directivity), which may be used to support various configurations related to inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation. For example, a first device (e.g., a transmitting device, which may be a base station 105 or a UE 115) may transmit different reference signals simultaneously using different component carriers, wherein the transmission may be performed on a transmission beam that may or may not be aligned with the first device. A second device (e.g., a receiving device, which may be a base station 105 or a UE 115) may receive different reference signals, which may include determining, for each of the reference signals, a peak received signal direction for the corresponding reference signal, or determining a beam weight set associated with a peak received power of the corresponding reference signal. The second device may determine a beam correlation metric, which may include various measurements of how the reception directions or beam weights are correlated for different reference signals of different component carriers. The second device may transmit a response to the first device, which may include the beam correlation metric itself, or some other indicator associated with beam correlation (e.g., whether the second device will support inter-band carrier aggregation or intra-band carrier aggregation using different transmit beams or receive beams). One or both of the first device or the second device may then perform various communication configurations related to carrier aggregation, such as determining whether to perform or refrain from performing communications according to an inter-band carrier aggregation configuration or an intra-band carrier aggregation configuration.

[0171] In various examples, the communication manager 101 may be included in the device to support beam-related evaluation of carrier aggregation, which may or may not be associated with a specific configuration or operation for uplink carrier aggregation or downlink carrier aggregation. For example, the UE 115 may include the communication manager 101-a, or the base station may include the communication manager 110-b.

[0172] In some examples, the communication manager 101 may determine a carrier aggregation configuration (e.g., an inter-band carrier aggregation configuration, an intra-band carrier aggregation configuration) associated with a first component carrier and a second component carrier. The communication manager 101 may, based on identifying the carrier aggregation configuration, use the first component carrier to transmit a first reference signal on a first beam to another device (e.g., UE 115, base station 105) during a first time interval, and use the second component carrier to transmit a second reference signal on a second beam to the other device during a second time interval overlapping the first time interval. In some examples, the communication manager 101 may receive a response from the other device based on the first reference signal and the second reference signal (e.g., based on an evaluation of reference signals on different beams), and the communication manager 101 may configure communications with the other device associated with the carrier aggregation configuration based on the response from the other device.

[0173] In some examples, the communication manager 101 may use a first component carrier during a first time interval to receive a first reference signal from another device (e.g., UE 115, base station 105) on a first beam; and use a second component carrier during a second time interval overlapping the first time interval to receive a second reference signal from the other device on a second beam. The communication manager 101 may determine a beam correlation metric based on receiving the first reference signal on the first beam and receiving the second reference signal on the second beam. In some examples, the beam correlation metric may be associated with an evaluation of the direction of the highest signal reception strength of each reference signal or its similarity. In some examples, the beam correlation metric may be associated with an evaluation of the receive beam weight associated with the highest signal reception strength of each reference signal or its similarity. In some examples, the communication manager 101 may transmit a response to the other device based on determining the beam correlation metric (e.g., transmitting a beam correlation metric, transmitting an indication of how the beams are correlated from the perspective of the receiving device). In some examples, the communications manager 101 may configure the associated device to communicate with the other device according to an inter-band carrier aggregation configuration or an intra-band carrier aggregation configuration based on transmitting the response to the other device.

[0174] Figure 2 An example of a wireless communication system 200 supporting beam correlation for carrier aggregation according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the wireless communication system 200 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. The wireless communication system 200 can support various examples of reference signal transmission using different component carriers to evaluate correlation of beams or other measurements of receive directions or codebooks using different component carriers.

[0175] The wireless communication system 200 may include a first device 205 (e.g., a transmitting device, a reference signal transmitter) and a second device 210 (e.g., a receiving device, a reference signal transmitter), wherein the first device 205 and the second device 210 may refer to various types of devices according to different configuration types. For example, when the reference signal described is associated with a downlink transmission, the first device 205 may be a base station 105 and the second device 210 may be a UE 115. When the reference signal is associated with an uplink transmission, the first device 205 may be a UE 115 and the second device may be a base station 105. When the reference signal is associated with a side link or a D2D or M2M transmission, the first device 205 may be a first UE 115 and the second device may be a second UE. When the reference signal is associated with an IAB transmission, the first device 205 may be a first base station 105 and the second device may be a second base station 105. In other examples, the first device 205 and the second device 210 may refer to these or other types of devices that may perform techniques for beam correlation evaluation according to the examples disclosed herein. In some examples, first device 205, second device 210, or both may be referred to as millimeter wave devices.

[0176] The wireless communication system 200 may be configured to communicate according to various frequency bands or frequency band portions (e.g., component carriers), which may include licensed frequency bands or unlicensed or shared frequency bands. In one example, a frequency band may refer to a frequency range (FR), which may include a set of frequency channels (e.g., an ARFCN set), and such frequency ranges may not overlap in the frequency domain. For example, the wireless communication system 200 may support communications using a frequency range FR1 (corresponding to a frequency band between 410 MHz and 7.125 GHz), a frequency range FR2 (corresponding to a frequency band between 24.250 GHz and 52.600 GHz), a frequency range FR4 (corresponding to a frequency band between 52.6 GHz and 71 GHz or 114.25 GHz), or various combinations of FR1, FR2, FR4, or other frequency ranges.

[0177] The first device 205 and the second device 210 may each be configured with a multi-antenna array that supports directional transmission, directional reception, or both. In some examples, the first device 205 or the second device 210 may be configured with a first multi-antenna array associated with one frequency band and a second multi-antenna array for another frequency band. Such a configuration may be an example of a device having different RF chains for different frequency bands, but different RF chains may additionally or alternatively refer to different power amplifiers (PAs), different low noise amplifiers (LNAs), or other components related to RF signal processing. In some examples, the components of the RF chain may be used for communication and for other purposes. For example, some automotive applications may include a radar system that supports location or proximity detection, and such a radar system may be additionally used to perform communications in a radar band (e.g., a 77 GHz band), wherein such communications may include an inter-band carrier configuration comprising a radar band and another band. Although some examples of the first device 205 or the second device 210 may include multiple RF chains that may be respectively associated with (e.g., customized to, calibrated to, or configured to correspond to) different frequency bands, other examples of the first device 205 or the second device 210 may include RF chains that support communication on multiple frequency bands.

[0178] In some examples, the first device 205 and the second device 210 may be configured to support intra-band carrier aggregation, which may refer to simultaneous communication on two or more component carriers of the same frequency band. Additionally or alternatively, the first device 205 and the second device 210 may be configured to support inter-band carrier aggregation, which may refer to simultaneous communication on two or more component carriers of different frequency bands. In one example of carrier aggregation (e.g., intra-band carrier aggregation or inter-band carrier aggregation), simultaneous communication on a first carrier or channel associated with a first frequency band (e.g., a lower carrier frequency) (referred to herein as Band 1) and a second carrier or channel associated with a second frequency band (e.g., a higher carrier frequency) (referred to herein as Band 2) may be supported. In various examples, Band 1 and Band 2 may refer to different frequency bands or the same frequency band.

[0179] In some examples, the carriers or channels of Band 1 and Band 2 may refer to different frequency ranges (e.g., different frequency ranges in FR1, FR2, or FR4). In one illustrative example, communications on Band 1 may be associated with a carrier or channel of FR1 (e.g., a 2.9 GHz band), while communications on Band 2 may be associated with a carrier or channel of FR2 (e.g., a 28 or 39 GHz band). In another example, communications on Band 1 may be associated with a carrier or channel of FR2 (e.g., a 28 GHz band), while communications on Band 2 may be associated with a carrier or channel of FR4 (e.g., a 60 GHz band).

[0180] In some examples, the carriers or channels of Band 1 and Band 2 may refer to the same frequency range (e.g., the same frequency range in FR1, FR2, or FR4). In one illustrative example, communications on Band 1 may be associated with a first carrier or channel in FR2 (e.g., a 28 GHz band), while communications on Band 2 may be associated with a second carrier or channel in FR2 (e.g., a 39 GHz band). In another example, communications on Band 1 may be associated with a first carrier or channel in FR4 (e.g., a 60 GHz band), while communications on Band 2 may be associated with a second carrier or channel in FR4 (e.g., a 66 GHz band). Although examples of inter-band and intra-band carrier aggregation on two component carriers are provided, the described techniques may be applied to any number of component carriers or frequency bands used in a carrier aggregation configuration, whether in the same frequency range or in two or more different frequency ranges.

[0181] In some examples of carrier aggregation, multiple RF chains may be used to direct energy across frequency bands in the same direction or cluster. Broadly speaking, clustering may refer to a property of a wireless channel between a transmitting device (e.g., first device 205, second device 210, base station, UE) and a receiving device (e.g., first device 205, second device 210, base station, UE). "Clustering" is a standard term used in channel modeling and MIMO processing for different objects or surfaces within a channel environment (e.g., reflectors (such as glass windows / panes, lamp posts), or diffractive objects (such as building corners, leaves)) that allow propagation from a transmitting device to a receiving device. For example, carrier aggregation including a 28 GHz band and a 39 GHz band may include using different RF chains for each band, where such coexistence may include various power or thermal considerations. In some examples, carrier aggregation can be improved by having well-correlated beams (e.g., directionally similar receive directions for different component carriers or different frequency bands from the perspective of the second device 210), and the first device 205 and the second device 210 can support quantification or other evaluation of the correlation between the beams used in the associated component carriers or frequency bands.

[0182] In one example, carrier aggregation may include a first component carrier or channel of a 28 GHz band and a second component carrier or channel of a 39 GHz band, and a relatively narrow beam at 39 GHz may be aligned in a different direction (e.g., at the second device 210) than a relatively wide beam at 28 GHz. In some examples, such beam alignment may be associated with clusters in the channel observed by the second device 210 that are intended to be excited by beams at two frequencies that are aligned in different directions (e.g., due to different antennas or antenna arrays that are aligned in different directions from the second device 210). In addition, the PADP between the 28 GHz band and the 39 GHz band may be different depending on material properties, environmental degradation (e.g., due to oxygen or water vapor along the signal propagation path), fading, obstructions, polarization-dependent losses, etc., which may be specific to certain frequency bands, sub-bands, or component carriers. Therefore, for these and other reasons, transmissions of different component carriers may be associated with directions of peak received power that are aligned in different directions (e.g., at the second device 210).

[0183] To support various configurations of carrier aggregation (e.g., inter-band carrier aggregation, intra-band carrier aggregation), the wireless communication system 200 may be configured to transmit different reference signals on different component carriers to support evaluation of beam correlation or other reception correlation from the perspective of the second device 210. For example, the first device 205 may be configured to transmit a first reference signal 215-a on a carrier or channel of a first frequency band (e.g., frequency band 1) and a second reference signal 215-b on a carrier or channel of a second frequency band (e.g., frequency band 2) that may be the same as or may be different from the first frequency band.

[0184] The first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b may be transmitted concurrently, simultaneously, or according to some other degree of overlapping time interval. For example, communication using the first component carrier and the second component carrier may be synchronized (e.g., in time, such as inter-band or intra-band synchronization, inter-cell or intra-cell synchronization, or other synchronization) so that the resource blocks or other allocation intervals of the first component carrier and the second component carrier are aligned in the time domain (e.g., from the perspective of the first device 205 or the second device 210, have the same start time, have the same end time, and span the same duration in time). In some examples, the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b may be transmitted by the first device 205 in the same TTI or a portion thereof (e.g., the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b are transmitted in the same symbol duration or symbol period). In some examples, the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b may be transmitted at a duration that is otherwise simultaneous or during respective durations that overlap in time in other ways.

[0185] The first reference signal 215-a can be transmitted by the first device 205-a using the first transmit beam 206-a or otherwise directionally transmitted using a first entry from a transmit codebook (e.g., an entry of an analog or digital codebook associated with a first transmission direction), and the second reference signal 215-b can be transmitted by the first device 205 using the second transmit beam 206-b or otherwise directionally transmitted using a second entry from a transmit codebook (e.g., an entry of an analog or digital codebook associated with a second transmission direction). Although it may be beneficial for carrier aggregation for the second device 210 to receive the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b in the same direction or a similar direction (e.g., a receive direction), the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b can be transmitted in the same direction or in different directions. For example, the first transmit beam 206-a and the second transmit beam 206-b may be the same transmit beam or otherwise aligned in the same direction, or the first transmit beam 206-a and the second transmit beam 206-b may be different transmit beams or otherwise aligned in different directions. In some cases, based at least in part on the carrier aggregation configuration, the first transmit beam 206-a may represent or otherwise be transmitted using a first component carrier, and the second transmit beam may represent or otherwise be transmitted using a second component carrier.

[0186] In various examples, the respective directions for transmitting the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b can be based on the alignment of different antenna arrays associated with different frequency bands, the directional transmission resolution or granularity associated with transmitting on different component carriers or different frequency bands, or other hardware with processing configurations or capabilities associated with different component carriers or frequency bands. In some examples, the first device 205 can be aware of signal propagation differences between the first component carrier and the second component carrier (e.g., based on beam training operations between the first device 205 and the second device 210), such as changes in electromagnetic properties due to reflective surfaces 230 or other signal propagation distortion or attenuation related to the transmission of the first reference signal 215-a but not related to the transmission of the second reference signal 215-b. Therefore, in some examples, the first device 205 can separately determine or adjust the transmission direction of one or both of the first reference signal 215-a or the second reference signal 215-b (e.g., to support the reception direction at the second device 210 to be relatively well aligned or otherwise related).

[0187] The type of reference signal employed by the wireless communication system 200 to support the described techniques may be based on the device type of the first device 205 or the second device 210, or the type of communication between the first device 205 and the second device 210, or a combination thereof. For example, when the first device 205 is a base station 105, or the reference signals 215-a and 215-b are transmitted in a downlink or backhaul configuration or direction, the reference signals 215-a and 215-b may be channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) transmissions performed by the first device 205 on the first component carrier and the second component carrier. In another example, when the first device 205 is a UE 115, or the reference signals 215-a and 215-b are transmitted in an uplink or sidelink configuration or direction, the reference signals 215-a and 215-b may be SRS transmissions performed by the first device 205 on the first component carrier and the second component carrier.

[0188] The hardware configuration used by the first device 205 to transmit the reference signals 215-a and 215-b can be based on the device type of the first device 205, or the hardware capabilities of the first device 205, or both. For example, the first device 205 can be a UE 115 with a single RF chain, and the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b can be transmitted on the first component carrier and the second component carrier respectively using the same single RF chain. In some examples, such transmissions can include applying the same M sequence, the same Gold sequence, or the same pseudo-random sequence to each of the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b, where such sequences can be selected or applied to support a certain degree of orthogonality between the transmissions. In another example, the first device 205 can be a UE 115 with multiple RF chains, and the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b can be transmitted on the first component carrier and the second component carrier respectively using the same RF chain or different RF chains. In other examples, the first device 205 may be a base station 105 having multiple RF chains, and the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b may be transmitted on the first component carrier and the second component carrier, respectively, using the same RF chain or different RF chains. In examples where the first device 205 uses different RF chains for the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b, such transmissions may include applying the same or different M sequences, the same or different Gold sequences, or the same or different pseudo-random sequences for each of the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b.

[0189] The first reference signal 215-a may be received by the second device 210 using the first receive beam 211-a or otherwise directionally received using a first entry in a receive codebook (e.g., an analog or digital codebook associated with a first receive direction), and the second reference signal 215-b may be received by the second device 210 using the second receive beam 211-b or otherwise directionally received using a second entry in a receive codebook (e.g., an analog or digital codebook associated with a second receive direction, which may or may not be the same codebook associated with receiving the first reference signal. Reception of the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b may be evaluated at the second device 210, which may include an evaluation of how correlated the beams or directions of highest received power are between the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b. For example, the second device 210 may receive the first reference signal 215-a, and as part of the reception, the second device 210 may determine (e.g., explicitly or implicitly) the direction associated with the highest received power of the first reference signal 215-a (e.g., of the receive beam 211-a). Similarly, the second device 210 may receive the second reference signal 215-b, and as part of the reception, the second device 210 may determine (e.g., explicitly or implicitly) the direction associated with the highest received power of the second reference signal 215-b (e.g., of the receive beam 211-b). The highest received power may be the highest received power relative to received powers associated with other received reference signals.

[0190] The first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b may be received concurrently, simultaneously, or according to time intervals with other degrees of overlap. For example, when the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b are transmitted simultaneously, the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b may be received simultaneously (e.g., when the signal propagation delay between the first device 205 and the second device 210 is the same for the first component carrier and the second component carrier). In other examples, when the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b are transmitted simultaneously, the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b may not be received simultaneously (e.g., when the signal propagation delay between the first device 205 and the second device 210 is different between the first component carrier and the second component carrier). However, in various examples (e.g., whether the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b are transmitted simultaneously), at least a portion of the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b may be received concurrently or during overlapping time intervals. In some cases, a relative delay between receiving the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b may be determined and taken into account (e.g., applied to signal processing or evaluation between the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b at the second device 210). In other examples, a relative signal propagation delay between the first component carrier and the second component carrier may be determined and taken into account (e.g., at the first device 205), which may include transmitting the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b at different durations in an effort to synchronize their reception (e.g., at the second device 210).

[0191] The type of procedure used by the second device 210 to evaluate the receive direction of the first reference signal 215-a or the second reference signal 215-b can be based on the device type of the first device 205 or the second device 210, or the type of communication between the first device 205 and the second device 210, or a combination thereof. For example, when the second device 210 is a UE 115, or when the reference signals 215-a and 215-b are transmitted in the downlink direction, the second device 210 can receive signaling (e.g., CSI-RS signaling or other reference signaling) as part of a P-1, P-2, or P-3 signaling or operation sequence that supports transmit beam and receive beam refinement between the first device 205 and the second device 210.

[0192] In P-1 signaling, a first device 205 (e.g., a base station 105) may transmit using a set of relatively wide transmit beams, and a second device 210 (e.g., a UE 115) may receive using one or more relatively wide receive beams, which may support establishing an initial communication link between the first device 205 and the second device 210. In some examples, P-1 signaling may be used to enable UE measurements of different transmit beams to support selection of a base station or TRP transmit beam, or a UE receive beam. For beamforming at a base station 105 or TRP, the P-1 operation may include intra-TRP or inter-TRP transmit beam sweeping from a set of different beams (e.g., a set of transmit beams). For beamforming at a UE 115, the P-1 operation may include the UE receiving beam sweeping from a set of different beams (e.g., a set of receive beams).

[0193] In P-2 signaling, the first device 205 can transmit using a set of relatively narrow transmit beams, and the second device 210 can measure the corresponding signal strength of each transmit beam in the set of transmit beams, and signal or otherwise indicate a preferred transmit beam in the set of transmit beams. In some examples, P-2 signaling can be used to enable UE measurements of different transmit beams to potentially change the transmit beam (e.g., inter-TRP or intra-TRP transmit beam). In some cases, such selection can be made from a smaller set of beams than in P-1 for beam refinement. In some examples, P-2 operations can be considered a subset of P-1 operations.

[0194] In P-3 signaling, first device 205 may transmit using a relatively narrow transmit beam (e.g., as selected or indicated by second device 210), and second device 210 may measure the respective signal strength of each receive beam in a set of relatively narrow receive beams, which may or may not be signaled or indicated back to first device 205. In some examples, P-3 signaling may be used to enable UE measurements on the same transmit beam to change the receive beam at UE 115 in situations where UE 115 uses beamforming.

[0195] In some examples, transmission of the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b can implement aspects of P-1 or P-2 signaling, where operations of the P-1 signaling or P-2 signaling are performed simultaneously (e.g., in the same codeword period) and in different component carriers or different frequency bands (e.g., in BWPs of two or more different frequency bands, in different RBs in the frequency domain). As part of performing the P-1 or P-2 operations, the second device 210 (e.g., UE 115) can determine the receive directivity associated with the first reference signal 215-a (e.g., the direction of the first receive beam 211-a) and the second reference signal 215-b (e.g., the direction of the second receive beam 211-b). In some examples according to the described techniques, it is contemplated that the second device 210 (e.g., UE 115) has multiple RF chains, which the second device 210 can use to process the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b (e.g., to separately determine the respective receive directions), and estimate or otherwise evaluate the beam correlation metric. If the second device 210 (e.g., UE 115) has only a single RF chain, a different procedure can be employed (e.g., according to U-1 or U-2 signaling or operation).

[0196] In another example, when the second device 210 is the base station 105, or when the reference signals 215-a and 215-b are transmitted in the uplink direction, the second device 210 can receive signaling (e.g., SRS signaling or other reference signaling) as part of a U-1, U-2, or U-3 signaling or operation sequence that supports transmit beam and receive beam refinement between the first device 205 and the second device 210. In some examples, the U-1, U-3, and U-2 signaling or operations can be similar to the P-1, P-2, and P-3 signaling or operations, respectively, but with an opposite perspective (e.g., in the uplink direction instead of the downlink direction).

[0197] In some examples, transmission of the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b can implement aspects of U-1 or U-3 signaling, where operations of U-1 signaling or U-3 signaling are performed simultaneously (e.g., in the same codeword period) and in different component carriers or different frequency bands (e.g., in BWPs of two or more different frequency bands, in different RBs in the frequency domain). As part of performing U-1 or U-3 operations, the second device 210 (e.g., the base station 105) can determine the receive directivity associated with the first reference signal 215-a (e.g., the direction of the first receive beam 211-a) and the second reference signal 215-b (e.g., the direction of the second receive beam 211-b). In some examples according to the described techniques, it may be contemplated that the second device 210 (e.g., base station 105) has multiple RF chains that the second device 210 may use to process the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b (e.g., to separately determine the respective receive directions) and estimate or otherwise evaluate the beam correlation metric. In some examples, the first device 205 (e.g., UE 115) may have only a single RF chain, but the example approaches using U-1 or U-3 signaling or operations may still be applicable to a second device 210 (e.g., base station 105) having multiple RF chains.

[0198] In some examples, the type of procedure used by the second device 210 to evaluate the reception direction of the first reference signal 215-a or the second reference signal 215-b may be based on the hardware capabilities or configuration of the second device 210. In various examples, the type of procedure used by the second device 210 to determine the directionality of reception on the first component carrier and the second component carrier (e.g., for the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b) may be the same, or the type of procedure used by the second device 210 to determine the directionality of reception on the first component carrier and the second component carrier (e.g., for the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b) may be different, which may be related to the hardware capabilities or configuration supported in the corresponding component carriers (e.g., in the corresponding frequency band).

[0199] In one example, the second device 210 may be configured to support digital beamforming for a corresponding component carrier (e.g., a corresponding frequency band), which may support various aspects of performing a directional (e.g., continuous) receive sweep. For example, for one or both of the first component carrier or the second component carrier, the second device may sweep through different beam weights to determine a spectrum graph of received power versus receive direction (e.g., associated with receiving the first reference signal 215-a or receiving the second reference signal 215-b). Accordingly, the second device 210 may determine the direction (e.g., angle) of the peak received power of the corresponding reference signal 215 based on the corresponding spectrum graph. Thus, in some examples, the second device 210 may support digital beamforming capabilities that allow searching for peak energy received in different directions. Such techniques may be applied to FR1+FR2 carrier aggregation or FR1+FR4 carrier aggregation, where digital beamforming is possible in one or both of frequency band 1 or frequency band 2, and may support direct comparison between the angles of the determined peak received power.

[0200] In another example, the second device 210 may be additionally or alternatively configured to support analog or hybrid beamforming for a corresponding component carrier (e.g., a corresponding frequency band), which may support various aspects of performing receive codebook sweeps. For example, for one or both of the first component carrier or the second component carrier, the second device 210 may sweep through different analog receive codebooks to determine a received power (e.g., associated with receiving a first reference signal 215-a or receiving a second reference signal), the received power being associated with each different entry in the analog receive codebook. Thus, the codebook entry with the highest received power for the corresponding reference signal may be determined to correspond to the directionality of receiving the corresponding reference signal. In some examples, the second device 210 may sweep through different codebook entries of beam weights to identify a preferred codebook entry using RSRP, SINR, or a combination thereof as a metric for determining a preferred codebook entry. Thus, in some examples, the second device 210 may support analog or hybrid beamforming capabilities that use beam scanning on analog or hybrid beamforming codebook entries.

[0201] Although described in the context of analog receive beamforming, the second device 210 may perform a similar determination by sweeping through a digital receive codebook. In some examples, each codebook entry may be implicitly or explicitly associated with a corresponding receive direction, which may be used to evaluate correlations between receive codebook entries associated with peak received powers of the first reference signal 215-a and the second reference signal 215-b. For example, f 低 and f 高The learned preferred beams or codebook entries may be used to represent two component carriers (e.g., of one or more frequency bands) at the second device 210. Such techniques may be applied to FR2+FR2 carrier aggregation (e.g., using a 28 GHz band and a 39 GHz band), or FR2+FR4 carrier aggregation (e.g., using a 28 GHz band and a 60 GHz band, using a 39 GHz band and a 60 GHz band, etc.).

[0202] In some examples, digital beamforming may be associated with relatively higher cost, complexity, power consumption, or thermal considerations (e.g., related to a relatively high number of RF chains), particularly at relatively high frequencies or higher frequency bands. Thus, in some examples of the second device 210, digital beamforming may be supported at relatively lower frequencies (e.g., relatively lower frequency component carriers, relatively lower frequency bands), and analog beamforming may be supported at relatively higher frequencies (e.g., relatively higher frequency component carriers, relatively higher frequency bands). In such examples, corresponding directivity metrics may be normalized between digital beamforming techniques and analog beamforming techniques to support evaluation of receive correlation between a first component carrier and a second component carrier. Thus, in some examples, the second device 210 can support beam correlation evaluation based on a comparison between a digital beamforming capability at the second device 210 that is used to determine the direction of a peak received power of a first reference signal 215-a (e.g., using a relatively lower frequency component carrier or a relatively lower frequency band) and an analog beamforming capability at the second device 210 that is used to determine the direction of a peak received power of a second reference signal 215-b (e.g., using a relatively higher frequency component carrier or a relatively higher frequency band).

[0203] The evaluation of beam correlation may be based on a separation angle (eg, ) can be determined (e.g., explicitly or implicitly) by using the first reference signal 215-a. In some examples, the beam correlation metric can be calculated as the cosine of the angle difference (e.g., from the perspective of the second device 210). For example, the azimuth direction at which the first reference signal 215-a is received at the second device 210 can be determined as (e.g., as an angle of a peak received power from a received power spectrum graph, as an angle corresponding to a codebook entry associated with a highest received power, where the highest received power may be a highest received power relative to received powers associated with other received reference signals), and the azimuth direction at which the second reference signal 215-b is received at the second device 210 may be determined as And the beam correlation measure can be determined as

[0204] In some examples, the elevation angle (eg, from the perspective of the second device 210) may be considered, where the elevation direction at which the first reference signal 215-a is received may be determined as θ 频带1 And the elevation direction of receiving the second reference signal 215-b can be determined as θ 频带2 In some examples, both azimuth and elevation are considered (e.g., where and represents the azimuth and elevation angle pairs toward which these beams direct peak energy), the beam correlation measure can be determined as In other words, if and If the beams are relatively close, a relatively large beam correlation can be determined, whereas if and At greater distances, relatively low beam correlations can be determined.

[0205] The first device 205 and the second device 210 can be configured for various aspects of carrier aggregation (e.g., inter-band carrier aggregation, intra-band carrier aggregation) based on an evaluation of beam correlation at the second device 210. For example, when the determined beam correlation metric satisfies a threshold (e.g., is at or above a threshold correlation, thereby indicating a sufficient degree of correlation), the spectral efficiency of applying inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation in the first component carrier and the second component carrier can be advantageous, and the first device 205 and the second device can perform carrier aggregation using the first component carrier and the second component carrier. In some examples, the determination to be made (e.g., comparison with a threshold) can be performed by the second device 210 and signaled to the first device 205 (e.g., in a response 220, which signals that the second device 210 supports configuring or performing inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation using the first component carrier and the second component carrier). In some examples, the determination to be made (e.g., comparison to a threshold) can be performed at the first device 205 based on a beam correlation metric communicated from the second device 210 (e.g., in the response 220) and signaled to the second device 210 (e.g., as an explicit indication by the first device 205 of inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation, as an implicit indication related to simultaneous scheduling by the first device 205 in the first component carrier and the second component carrier).

[0206] When the determined beam correlation metric does not satisfy the threshold (e.g., is at or below a threshold correlation, indicating an insufficient degree of correlation), the first device 205 and the second device 210 may refrain from performing carrier aggregation using the first component carrier and the second component carrier. For example, when the beam correlation metric does not satisfy the threshold, communications using different component carriers or different frequency bands may involve unbalanced power (e.g., between component carriers, between frequency bands), unbalanced modulation and coding schemes, or other asymmetries, which may degrade spectral efficiency at the expense of energy efficiency.

[0207] In some examples, determining to refrain from performing intra-band carrier aggregation using the first component carrier and the second component carrier may include determining to attempt intra-band carrier aggregation using different frequency component carriers, or determining to refrain from performing intra-band carrier aggregation (e.g., until a later time, until signal propagation conditions change or improve). In some examples, determining to refrain from performing inter-band carrier aggregation using the first frequency band and the second frequency band may include determining to attempt inter-band carrier aggregation using different frequency bands, determining to refrain from performing inter-band carrier aggregation, or determining to perform intra-band carrier aggregation (e.g., until a later time, until signal propagation conditions change or improve). In some examples, when the determined beam correlation metric does not meet a threshold (e.g., is at or below a threshold correlation, indicating an insufficient degree of correlation between directions of peak received power), the second device 210 may re-evaluate reception at different directions in an effort to balance reception using the first component carrier and the second component carrier. For example, the described techniques may include the second device 210 determining a suboptimal reception direction for one or both of the first component carrier or the second component carrier, wherein the suboptimal reception directions may be relatively well aligned with each other (e.g., more well correlated than the peak reception directions). In some examples, such a tradeoff may support improved spectrum utilization by more efficiently utilizing inter-band carrier aggregation despite receiving signaling at less than optimal signal quality.

[0208] Figure 3 An example of a wireless communication system 300 and corresponding operations that supports beam correlation for carrier aggregation according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the wireless communication system 300 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100 or 200. The wireless communication system 300 may include a first device 205-a and a second device 210-a, which may be as described with reference to Figure 2 Examples of the first device 205 and the second device 210 are described.

[0209] At 310, the first device 205-a may determine a carrier aggregation configuration. The carrier aggregation configuration may be associated with a first component carrier and a second component carrier. For example, the first device 205-a may determine an inter-band carrier aggregation configuration, an intra-band carrier aggregation configuration, or both. In some examples, the first device 205-a may determine a direction of communication with 210-a, which may be associated with signaling or procedures that vary by direction. For example, various aspects of the carrier aggregation configuration may be determined based on whether the communication with the second device 210-a is an uplink communication, a downlink communication, a side link or D2D communication, or a backhaul communication. In some examples, various aspects of the carrier aggregation configuration may be determined based on whether the first device 205-a is a base station 105 or a UE 115. Additionally or alternatively, various aspects of the carrier aggregation configuration may be determined based on whether the second device 210-a is a base station 105 or a UE 115.

[0210] In some examples, aspects of the carrier aggregation configuration may be determined based on one or more of the frequency bands available for an inter-band or intra-band carrier configuration (e.g., a FR1+FR2 configuration, a FR1+FR4 configuration, a FR2+FR2 configuration, a FR2+FR4 configuration, a FR4+FR4 configuration, etc.) In some examples, determining the carrier aggregation configuration may include selecting one or more component carriers or channels for transmitting a reference signal, which may or may not include performing a contention resolution procedure to access the selected component carriers or channels.

[0211] In some examples, aspects of the inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation configuration may be determined based on the capabilities of the second device 210-a. For example, the second device 210-a may indicate (e.g., via RRC signaling) a general capability to support inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation, or a capability to support inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation in a specific frequency band (e.g., based on frequency band-specific hardware or processing capabilities at the second device 210-a).

[0212] At 320, the first device 205-a may use the first component carrier to transmit a first reference signal (eg, reference signal) on a first transmit beam. Figure 2 The first reference signal 215-a described above, and using a second component carrier to transmit a second reference signal on a second transmit beam (e.g., referring to Figure 2The second reference signal 215-b described). The transmission by the first device 205-a can be based on the carrier aggregation configuration determined at 310, such as using frequency bands or their channels or component carriers, which are selected or identified as part of the carrier aggregation configuration or based on identifying that the second device 210-a can be configured to perform or be able to perform inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation. The carrier aggregation configuration can be associated with the first component carrier and the second component carrier. The first reference signal and the second reference signal transmitted at 320 can be received at the second device 210-a, respectively, which can include determining a corresponding directivity or codebook associated with the peak received power of each of the first reference signal and the second reference signal (e.g., the first receive beam and the second receive beam, respectively).

[0213] Transmitting the first and second reference signals at 320 may have various degrees of overlap in the time domain (e.g., the second time interval may at least partially overlap with the first time interval). For example, the first reference signal and the second reference signal may be transmitted simultaneously, such as during the same symbol duration or symbol period synchronized between the first component carrier and the second component carrier. In some examples, the type of reference signal transmitted may be based on the type of device performing the transmission (e.g., the type of the first device 205a) or the communication direction. For example, when the reference signal is transmitted in the uplink direction, transmitting the reference signal at 320 may include transmitting at least two SRSs in a timely manner on different RBs (e.g., in the frequency domain) of different BWPs of the two component carriers. When the reference signal is transmitted in the downlink direction, transmitting the reference signal at 320 may include transmitting at least two CSI-RSs in a timely manner on different RBs (e.g., in the frequency domain) of different BWPs of the two component carriers.

[0214] At 330, the second device 210-a may determine a beam correlation metric. For example, the second device 210-a may determine a cosine of a separation angle between a first receive direction associated with receiving a first reference signal (e.g., a first receive beam) and a second receive direction associated with receiving a second reference signal (e.g., a second receive beam). Such a separation angle may be determined explicitly (e.g., as a comparison between angles of peak received powers determined by corresponding spectrograms) or implicitly (e.g., as a comparison between angles associated with different codebook entries that correspond to peak received powers of the first reference signal and the second reference signal).

[0215] In some examples, at 340, the second device 210-a may compare the beam correlation metric (e.g., as determined at 330) to a threshold. For example, the second device 210-a may determine whether the beam correlation metric determined at 330 satisfies the threshold (e.g., indicating that the reception directions are within a threshold separation amount) or does not satisfy the threshold (e.g., indicating that the reception directions are outside of the threshold separation amount).

[0216] At 350, the second device 210-a may transmit a response based on the first reference signal and the second reference signal to the first device 205-a. In some examples, the response at 350 may include the beam correlation metric itself (e.g., as determined at 330). In some cases, the beam correlation metric may be based on receiving the first reference signal on the first beam and receiving the second reference signal on the second beam. In some examples (e.g., after comparing with the threshold at 340), the second device 210-a may transmit a result of such a comparison, such as an indication of whether the receive directions are sufficiently correlated, an indication of whether the second device 210-a supports inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation using the first component carrier and the second component carrier (e.g., using the first transmit beam and the second transmit beam, using the first receive beam and the second receive beam, using the first frequency band and the second frequency band), or other indications.

[0217] In some examples (e.g., when the response 350 includes a beam correlation metric), at 360, the first device 205-a can compare the beam correlation metric (e.g., as transmitted at 350) to a threshold. For example, the first device 210-a can determine whether the beam correlation metric transmitted at 350 meets the threshold (e.g., indicating that the receive directions are within a threshold separation amount) or does not meet the threshold (e.g., indicating that the receive directions are outside the threshold separation amount). In some examples, the first device 205-a can determine whether the receive directions are sufficiently correlated at the second device 210-a, whether to perform inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation using the first component carrier and the second component carrier (e.g., using the first transmit beam and the second transmit beam, using the first frequency band and the second frequency band), or other indications.

[0218] At 370, the first device 205-a and the second device 210-a may be configured to communicate with each other, which may include various configurations related to inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation. For example, when the determined beam correlation metric satisfies a threshold (e.g., as determined at 340 or 360), the first device 205-a and the second device 210-a may be configured to use the first component carrier and the second component carrier for inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation. When the determined beam correlation metric does not satisfy the threshold (e.g., as determined at 340 or 360), the first device 205-a and the second device 210-a may be configured to suppress the use of the first component carrier and the second component carrier (at least according to the beam configuration used to transmit and receive the first and second reference signals) for inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation.

[0219] In some examples, the configuration at 370 may include configuring the first device 205-a to transmit inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation communications using a first component carrier on a first transmit beam (e.g., similar to transmitting a first reference signal at 320) and using a second component carrier on a second transmit beam (e.g., similar to transmitting a second reference signal at 320). Similarly, in some examples, the configuration at 370 may include configuring the second device 210-a to receive inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation communications using a first component carrier on a first receive beam (e.g., similar to receiving a first reference signal at 320) and using a second component carrier on a second receive beam (e.g., similar to receiving a second reference signal at 320).

[0220] In some examples, the configuration at 370 may include signaling between the first device 205-a and the second device 210-a. For example, configuring the communication may include transmitting signaling from the first device 205-a to the second device 210-a, including parameters for enabling carrier aggregation with the device 210-a, wherein the parameters may be associated with a carrier aggregation configuration based on a response from the second device 210-a. In another example, configuring the communication may include transmitting signaling from the second device 210-a to the first device 205-a, including parameters for enabling carrier aggregation at the first device 205-a to communicate with the second device 210-a. In another example, when the first device 205-a compares the beam correlation metric to a threshold, or otherwise evaluates whether to perform inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation, the first device 205-a may signal the second device an indication of performing inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation. Such an indication may be an explicit indication that the first device 205-a is to transmit information signaling according to an inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation configuration, which may include an indication of the relevant component carriers or frequency bands, or may rely on an assumption that the frequency bands or their carriers or channels will be the same as those used in transmitting the first and second reference signals. In some examples, such an indication may be an implicit indication, such as resource scheduling by the first device 205-a associated with transmissions in the first component carrier and the second component carrier.

[0221] In some examples, the configuration at 370 may not include further signaling between the first device 205-a and the second device 210-a. For example, when the second device 210-a compares the beam correlation metric to a threshold, or otherwise evaluates whether to perform inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation, the second device 210-a may assume based on transmitting the response at 350 that the second device 210-a should be configured according to the inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation configuration (e.g., using the first receive beam for the first component carrier and the second receive beam for the second component carrier).

[0222] When the determined beam correlation metric does not satisfy the threshold (e.g., as determined at 340 or at 360), the first device 205-a or the second device 210-a or both may perform operations directed to identifying different component carriers, different component carriers, different frequency bands, or different beams to support different inter-band or intra-band carrier aggregation configurations. For example, the second device 210-a may re-evaluate the beam correlation metric using a suboptimal beam associated with receiving the reference signal at a power lower than the peak received power. In another example, the first device 205-a may attempt to transmit the reference signal using a different combination of component carriers, a different combination of one or more frequency bands, or a different combination of one or more different transmit beams.

[0223] Figure 4 A block diagram 400 of a device 405 supporting beam correlation for carrier aggregation according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The device 405 may be an example of aspects of a UE 115 or a base station 105 as described herein. The device 405 may include a receiver 410, a communication manager 415, and a transmitter 420. The device 405 may also include a processor. Each of these components may be in communication with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0224] Receiver 410 may receive information such as packets, user data, or control information associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels, data channels, and information related to beam correlation of carrier aggregation, etc.). [0226] In another implementation, the communication manager 415 or its subcomponents may be implemented in code executed by a processor (e.g., as communication management software or firmware), or any combination thereof. If implemented in code executed by a processor, the functionality of the communication manager 415 or its subcomponents may be performed by a general purpose processor, DSP, ASIC, FPGA, or other programmable logic device.

[0227] In some examples, communications manager 415 may be configured to perform various operations (eg, receive, determine, transmit, configure) using or otherwise in cooperation with receiver 410, transmitter 420, or both.

[0228] The communication manager 415 or its subcomponents may be physically located at various locations, including being distributed such that portions of functionality are implemented by one or more physical components at different physical locations. In some examples, according to various aspects of the present disclosure, the communication manager 415 or its subcomponents may be separate and distinct components. In some examples, according to various aspects of the present disclosure, the communication manager 415 or its subcomponents may be combined with one or more other hardware components (including, but not limited to, input / output (I / O) components, a transceiver, a network server, another computing device, one or more other components described in the present disclosure, or a combination thereof).

[0229] The transmitter 420 may transmit signals generated by other components of the device 405. In some examples, the transmitter 420 may be co-located with the receiver 410 in a transceiver module. For example, the transmitter 420 may be a reference Fig. 9 The transceiver 915 described or referred to Fig.10 Examples of various aspects of the transceiver 1020 described herein. The transmitter 420 may utilize a single antenna or a set of antennas. The transmitter 420 may include one or more RF chains, and in the case where multiple RF chains are included, the transmitter 420 may support separate transmissions at different RF chains in the multiple RF chains.

[0230] In some examples, the communication manager 415 may determine a carrier aggregation configuration associated with the first component carrier and the second component carrier. In some examples, the communication manager 415 may, based on the carrier aggregation configuration associated with the first component carrier and the second component carrier, use the first component carrier to transmit a first reference signal to another device on a first beam during a first time interval; based on the carrier aggregation configuration, use the second component carrier to transmit a second reference signal to the other device on a second beam during a second time interval that partially overlaps with the first time interval; receive a response from the other device based on the first reference signal and the second reference signal; and transmit signaling including a parameter for enabling carrier aggregation at the other device, the parameter associated with the carrier aggregation configuration being based at least in part on the response from the other device.

[0231] In some examples, the communication manager 415 may use a first component carrier during a first time interval to receive a first reference signal from another device on a first beam; and use a second component carrier during a second time interval that at least partially overlaps with the first time interval to receive a second reference signal from the other device on a second beam. In some examples, the communication manager 415 may determine a beam correlation metric based on receiving the first reference signal on the first beam and receiving the second reference signal on the second beam. In some examples, the communication manager 415 may transmit a response to the other device based on the beam correlation metric, the beam correlation metric being based on receiving the first reference signal on the first beam and receiving the second reference signal on the second beam. The communication manager 415 may transmit signaling including parameters for enabling carrier aggregation at the device 405 to communicate with the other device according to the carrier aggregation configuration parameters, and transmitting the signaling may be based on transmitting the response to the other device.

[0232] The communication manager 415 as described herein may be implemented to achieve one or more potential results. One implementation may allow the device 405 to more efficiently determine carrier aggregation communication parameters for communicating with one or more other devices. For example, the device 405 may receive simultaneous reference signals from a second device, which the device 405 may use to determine a beam correlation metric for communicating with the second device.

[0233] Based on implementing the beam correlation determination techniques described herein, the processor of the UE 115 (e.g., controlling the Fig. 9 The described receiver 410, transmitter 420, or transceiver 915) can improve reliability and efficiency in reference signal communication between the device 405 and one or more other devices and carrier aggregation parameter determination for communication between the device 405 and one or more other devices.

[0234] Figure 5 A block diagram 500 of a device 505 supporting beam correlation for carrier aggregation according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The device 505 may be an example of aspects of the device 405, UE 115, or base station 105 as described herein. The device 505 may include a receiver 510, a communication manager 515, and a transmitter 540. The device 505 may also include a processor. Each of these components may be in communication with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0235] The receiver 510 may receive information such as packets, user data, or control information associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels, data channels, and information related to beam correlation of carrier aggregation, etc.). The information may be passed to other components of the device 505. The receiver 510 may be a reference Fig. 9The transceiver 915 described and referenced Fig.10 Examples of various aspects of the transceiver 1020 described herein. The receiver 510 may utilize a single antenna or a set of antennas. The receiver 510 may include one or more RF chains, and in the case where multiple RF chains are included, the receiver 510 may support separate reception at different RF chains in the multiple RF chains.

[0236] Transmitter 540 may transmit signals generated by other components of device 505. In some examples, transmitter 540 may be co-located with receiver 510 in a transceiver module. For example, transmitter 540 may be a reference Fig. 9 The transceiver 915 described or referred to Fig.10 Examples of various aspects of the transceiver 1020 described herein. The transmitter 540 may utilize a single antenna or a set of antennas. The transmitter 540 may include one or more RF chains, and in the case where multiple RF chains are included, the transmitter 540 may support separate transmissions at different RF chains in the multiple RF chains.

[0237] Communications manager 515 may be an example of aspects of communications manager 415 as described herein. Communications manager 515 may include carrier aggregation configuration component 520, reference signal transmission component 525, reference signal response reception component 530, and communications configuration component 535. Communications manager 515 may be an example of aspects of communications manager 910 or 1010 as described herein.

[0238] Carrier aggregation configuration component 520 can determine a carrier aggregation configuration associated with the first component carrier and the second component carrier.

[0239] The reference signal transmission component 525 may use the first component carrier to transmit a first reference signal to another device on a first beam during a first time interval based on a carrier aggregation configuration associated with the first component carrier and the second component carrier, and use the second component carrier to transmit a second reference signal to the other device on a second beam during a second time interval that at least partially overlaps with the first time interval.

[0240] The reference signal response receiving component 530 may receive a response from the other device based on the first reference signal and the second reference signal.

[0241] The communication configuration component 535 can configure communications associated with the carrier aggregation configuration with the other device based on the response from the other device. In some examples, the communication configuration component 535 can transmit signaling including parameters for enabling carrier aggregation at the other device, the parameters associated with the carrier aggregation configuration being based at least in part on the response from the other device.

[0242] Figure 6 A block diagram 600 of a communication manager 605 supporting beam correlation for carrier aggregation according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The communication manager 605 may be an example of aspects of the communication manager 415, the communication manager 515, the communication manager 910, or the communication manager 1010 described herein. The communication manager 605 may include a carrier aggregation configuration component 610, a reference signal transmission component 615, a reference signal response reception component 620, a communication configuration component 625, a beam correlation metric reception component 630, a carrier aggregation support identification component 635, a first RF transmit chain 640, a second RF transmit chain 645, a CSI-RS transmission component 650, and an SRS transmission component 655. Each of these modules may be in direct or indirect communication with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0243] The carrier aggregation configuration component 610 can determine, at the first device, a carrier aggregation configuration associated with a first component carrier and a second component carrier. In various examples, the carrier aggregation configuration can include an inter-band carrier aggregation configuration, an intra-band carrier aggregation configuration, or both. In various examples, the first component carrier and the second component carrier can be in different frequency bands or the same frequency band.

[0244] The reference signal transmission component 615 can transmit a first reference signal to a second device on a first beam using the first component carrier during a first time interval based on a carrier aggregation configuration associated with the first component carrier and the second component carrier.

[0245] In some examples, the reference signal transmission component 615 may transmit a second reference signal to a second device on a second beam using a second component carrier during a second time interval that partially overlaps with the first time interval based on the carrier aggregation configuration.

[0246] In some examples, transmitting the first reference signal includes transmitting the first reference signal during a first symbol duration; and transmitting the second reference signal includes transmitting the second reference signal during a second symbol duration, the second symbol duration being synchronized with the first symbol duration at the first device. In some examples, the first symbol duration and the second symbol duration may span the same time interval (e.g., based on synchronization). In some examples, the first time interval and the second time interval may be the same time interval.

[0247] In some examples, transmitting the first reference signal includes transmitting the first reference signal on a first millimeter wave frequency band; and transmitting the second reference signal includes transmitting the second reference signal on a second millimeter wave frequency band that does not overlap with the first millimeter wave frequency band.

[0248] In some examples, transmitting the first reference signal includes transmitting the first reference signal using a first resource block; and transmitting the second reference signal includes transmitting the second reference signal using a second resource block that does not overlap with the first resource block in the frequency domain.

[0249] In some examples, transmitting a first reference signal includes transmitting the first reference signal using a first RF transmit chain 640; and transmitting a second reference signal includes transmitting the second reference signal using a second RF transmit chain 645. In some examples, transmitting a first reference signal includes transmitting the first reference signal using a first RF transmit chain 640; and transmitting a second reference signal includes transmitting the second reference signal using the first RF transmit chain 640. In some examples, transmitting a first reference signal includes transmitting the first reference signal using a second RF transmit chain 645; and transmitting a second reference signal includes transmitting the second reference signal using the second transmit RF chain 645. Although the first RF transmit chain 640 and the second RF transmit chain 645 are illustrated as being part of the communications manager 605, in some examples, at least a portion of the first RF transmit chain 640 and the second RF transmit chain 645 may be considered part of a transmitter (e.g., as described in reference to Figure 4 and 5 illustrative boundaries of the depicted transmitter 420 or 540).

[0250] The reference signal response receiving component 620 may receive, at the first device, a response from the second device based on the first reference signal and the second reference signal.

[0251] The communication configuration component 625 can configure communications associated with the carrier aggregation configuration with the second device based on the response from the second device. In some examples, the communication configuration component 625 can transmit signaling including parameters for enabling carrier aggregation at the second device, the parameters associated with the carrier aggregation configuration being based at least in part on the response from the second device.

[0252] In some examples, the communication configuration component 625 can determine to use a first component carrier to perform communication with a second device on a first beam and a second component carrier to perform communication on a second beam according to a carrier aggregation configuration when a received beam correlation metric satisfies (e.g., is greater than or equal to) a threshold.

[0253] In some examples, the communication configuration component 625 may determine to suppress use of a first component carrier for communicating with a second device on a first beam and use of a second component carrier for communicating with a second device on a second beam according to the carrier aggregation configuration when a received beam correlation metric does not satisfy (e.g., is less than or equal to) a threshold.

[0254] In some examples, transmitting signaling including parameters for enabling carrier aggregation includes: based on an indication that the second device supports a carrier aggregation configuration on a first beam and a second beam, determining to use a first component carrier to perform communication with the second device on the first beam and a second component carrier to perform communication with the second device on the second beam in accordance with the carrier aggregation configuration.

[0255] In some examples, transmitting signaling including parameters for enabling carrier aggregation includes: based on an indication that the second device does not support the carrier aggregation configuration on the first beam and the second beam, suppressing use of the first component carrier to perform communications with the second device on the first beam and use of the second component carrier to perform communications on the second beam according to the carrier aggregation configuration.

[0256] In some examples (eg, when the communications manager 605 is associated with a base station or an IAB node), the communications configuration component 625 can configure, at the first device, downlink communications with the second device according to the carrier aggregation configuration.

[0257] In some examples (eg, when the communications manager 605 is associated with a UE or CPE), the communications configuration component 625 can configure, at the first device, uplink communications with the second device according to the carrier aggregation configuration.

[0258] The beam correlation metric receiving component 630 can receive a beam correlation metric based on a first reference signal on a first beam and a second reference signal on a second beam from a second device. In some examples, the beam correlation metric can be based on a separation angle between a first direction of a peak received power of the first reference signal on the first beam at the second device and a second direction of a peak received power of the second reference signal on the second beam at the second device. In some examples, the beam correlation metric can be based on a difference between a first digital beamforming codebook entry or direction corresponding to the highest received power of the first reference signal at the second device and a second digital beamforming codebook entry or direction corresponding to the highest received power of the second reference signal at the second device. In some examples, the beam correlation metric can be based on a comparison between a first analog beamforming codebook entry or direction corresponding to the highest received power of the first reference signal at the second device and a second analog beamforming codebook entry or direction corresponding to the highest received power of the second reference signal at the second device. In some examples, the beam correlation metric may be based on a comparison between an analog beamforming codebook or direction corresponding to a highest received power of a first reference signal at the second device and a digital beamforming codebook or direction corresponding to a highest received power of a second reference signal at the second device.

[0259] The carrier aggregation support identification component 635 can receive an indication from the second device that the second device supports or does not support carrier aggregation configuration on the first beam and the second beam.

[0260] In some examples, to transmit the first and second reference signals, CSI-RS transmission component 650 may transmit the first CSI-RS on the first beam using the first component carrier and transmit the second CSI-RS on the second beam using the second component carrier.

[0261] In some examples, to transmit the first and second reference signals, the SRS transmission component 655 can transmit the first SRS on the first beam using the first component carrier and transmit the second SRS on the second beam using the second component carrier.

[0262] Figure 7 A block diagram 700 of a device 705 supporting beam correlation for carrier aggregation according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The device 705 may be an example of aspects of the device 405, UE 115, or base station 105 as described herein. The device 705 may include a receiver 710, a communication manager 715, and a transmitter 740. The device 705 may also include a processor. Each of these modules may be in direct or indirect communication with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0271] The reference signal receiving component 810 can receive a first reference signal from a second device on a first beam using a first component carrier during a first time interval when the first device is present.

[0272] In some examples, the reference signal receiving component 810 can use the second component carrier to receive a second reference signal from the second device on a second beam during a second time interval at least partially overlapping the first time interval at the first device. In various examples, the second component carrier can be included in a different frequency band than the first component carrier, or in the same frequency band as the first component carrier.

[0273] In some examples, receiving the first reference signal includes receiving the first reference signal during a first symbol duration; and receiving the second reference signal includes receiving the second reference signal during a second symbol duration, the second symbol duration being synchronized with the first symbol duration at the first device. In some examples, the first symbol duration and the second symbol duration can span the same time interval (e.g., based on synchronization).

[0274] In some examples, receiving the first reference signal includes receiving the first reference signal on a first millimeter wave frequency band; and receiving the second reference signal includes receiving the second reference signal on a second millimeter wave frequency band that does not overlap with the first millimeter wave frequency band.

[0277] The beam correlation determining component 815 can determine, at the first device, a beam correlation metric based on receiving a first reference signal on the first beam and receiving a second reference signal on the second beam.

[0278] In some examples, the beam correlation determination component 815 may determine the beam correlation metric based on a separation angle between a first direction of peak received power at a first device of a first reference signal on a first beam and a second direction of peak received power at the first device of a second reference signal on a second beam.

In various examples, the configuration can include an inter-band carrier aggregation configuration, an intra-band carrier aggregation configuration, or both. In some examples, the communication configuration component 825 can transmit signaling including parameters for enabling carrier aggregation at the first device to communicate with the second device according to the carrier aggregation configuration parameters, and transmitting the signaling can be based on transmitting the response to the second device.

[0286] Beam correlation metric transmitting component 830 can transmit the determined beam correlation metric to the second device (eg, in cooperation with reference signal response transmitting component 820).

[0287] The carrier aggregation configuration receiving component 835 can receive configuration information from the second device in response to the transmitted beam correlation metric; and configuring the first device to communicate with the second device according to the carrier aggregation configuration can be based on the configuration information.

[0288] In some examples, beam correlation evaluating component 840 can determine, at the first device, that the beam correlation metric satisfies (e.g., is greater than or equal to) a threshold. In some examples, beam correlation evaluating component 840 can transmit (e.g., in cooperation with reference signal response transmitting component 820) an indication that the beam correlation metric satisfies (e.g., is greater than or equal to) the threshold.

In some examples, beam correlation evaluating component 840 can transmit (e.g., in cooperation with reference signal response transmitting component 820) an indication that the beam correlation metric does not satisfy (e.g., is less than or equal to) the threshold.

[0290] In some examples, the carrier aggregation support indication component 845 can (e.g., in cooperation with the reference signal response transmission component 820) transmit an indication that the first device supports a carrier aggregation configuration on a first beam (e.g., using a first component carrier) and on a second beam (e.g., using a second component carrier).

[0291] In some examples, the carrier aggregation support indication component 845 can (e.g., in cooperation with the reference signal response transmission component 820) transmit to a second device an indication to suppress communications on a first beam (e.g., using a first component carrier) and a second beam (e.g., using a second component carrier) in accordance with a carrier aggregation configuration.

[0292] In some examples, to receive the first and second reference signals, the CSI-RS receiving component 860 may use a first component carrier to receive a first channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) on a first beam; and use a second component carrier to receive a second CSI-RS on a second beam.
