AI Technical Summary
In existing secondary batteries, when lithium vanadium fluorophosphate (LVPF) is used as the cathode active material, the charging/discharging plateau is too flat, making it difficult for the battery management system to accurately monitor the state of charge (SOC) and predict the remaining energy, which affects high energy density, cycle life and rate performance.
Lithium vanadium fluorophosphate (LVPF) is blended with other conventional cathode active materials such as LFP, NMC, and NCA. By adjusting their weight ratios and selecting appropriate second active materials, blended cathode materials are formed to generate voltage slope and improve SOC monitoring and performance.
It improves the energy density, cycle life, and rate performance of secondary batteries, while also enhancing the monitoring accuracy and safety of the battery management system.

Abstract
Description
background Technical Field
[0001] This disclosure relates to blended cathode materials intended for use as positive electrode materials (or cathode materials) in rechargeable electrochemical batteries (or secondary batteries) (e.g., lithium-ion secondary batteries), and also to secondary batteries including cathodes having blended cathode materials. In particular, this disclosure relates to blended cathode materials that provide one or more benefits such as improved determination of state of charge (SOC), energy density, cycle life, coating quality, adhesion, safety, and electrode density.
[0002] Description of related technologies
[0003] In secondary batteries, active materials are materials that participate in electrochemical reactions to generate electrical energy during battery discharge.
[0004] Many materials are commonly known as cathode active materials for secondary batteries, such as NCA, NMC, LFP, LMP, LFMP, LCP, LCO, LNO, LMO and LNMO (which are described in detail below).
[0005] Lithium vanadium fluorophosphate (e.g., LiVPO4F and its derivatives) (LVPF) is a known cathode active material with relatively high energy density (compared to many conventionally used cathode materials), due to its high efficiency for Li- ionization. + / Li(V 4+ / V 3+ The redox pair (corresponding to lithium ion insertion and extraction, respectively) has a charge and discharge plateau of approximately 4.2V.
[0006] However, it has been established that using LVPF as the cathode active material may have some drawbacks. For example, the very flat charge / discharge plateau of LVPF has been identified, which may make it difficult for the battery management system (or BMS) to monitor the state of charge (or SOC), thus making it difficult to accurately predict the remaining energy available for further utilization.
[0007] Therefore, there remains a need for cathode active materials for secondary batteries that offer one or more of the following advantages: high energy density, high cycle life, improved rate performance, and improved ease of use with BMS. Invention Overview

For example, the second plateau (about 3.5V) of LFMP during discharge can serve as an excellent SOC indicator. In this embodiment, r is not particularly limited. However, in certain aspects, r is preferably 0.4≤r≤0.6.
[0149] In a modification of this exemplary embodiment, formula (A4) (LFMP) can be blended with formula (B1) (NMC) as the second active material, wherein the weight ratio of LFMP to NMC in this blend is a:(1-a) (i.e., LVPF r (LMFP a NMC 1-a ) 1-r ), where the value a is any value greater than 0 and less than 1 (i.e., 0<a<1). For example, the value a can be 0.1≤a≤0.9, 0.2≤a≤0.8, 0.3≤a≤0.7, or 0.4≤a≤0.6.
[0150] In another modification of this exemplary embodiment, formula (A4) (LFMP) can be blended with formula (B3) (NCA) as the second active material, wherein the weight ratio of LFMP to NCA in this blend is b:(1-b) (i.e., LVPF r (LMFP b NCA 1-b ) 1-r ), where the value b is any value greater than 0 and less than 1 (i.e., 0<b<1). For example, the value b can be 0.1≤b≤0.9, 0.2≤b≤0.8, 0.3≤b≤0.7, or 0.4≤b≤0.6.
[0151] In another exemplary embodiment, the first active material (LVPF) is blended with Formula (B1) (NMC (e.g., NMC111, NMC532, NMC622, NMC811, etc.)) as the second active material at a weight ratio of r:(1-r). In this exemplary embodiment, the value of r is preferably 0.4≤r≤0.6.
[0152] In another exemplary embodiment, the first active material (LVPF) is blended with Formula (B3) (NCA) as the second active material at a weight ratio of r:(1-r). In this exemplary embodiment, r is preferably 0.4≤r≤0.6.
[0153] In another exemplary embodiment, for the purpose of improving one or both of the capacity retention and processability of LFMP, LVPF is added to Formula (A4) (LFMP) as the second active material at a weight ratio of r:(1-r). In this exemplary embodiment, r may be 0.1≤r≤0.6. In this exemplary embodiment, the second active material may comprise another second active material combined with LFMP as follows: LVPF x (LFMP a Z b ) y , wherein a+b=1, 0<a≤1, 0≤b<1, x+y=1; 0<x<1, 0<y<1, and "Z" is any one of the additional second active materials disclosed herein (e.g., NCA, LCO, LNO, LMO, etc.).
[0154] In another exemplary embodiment, it has also been found that blending LVPF into non-phosphate cathode materials (e.g., NMC, NCA, LCO, LNMO, etc.) can improve battery safety. For example, without being bound by any theory, blending LVPF can suppress oxygen release from non-phosphate cathode materials during cycling, reduce exothermic reactions during thermal runaway or abuse, and / or increase decomposition temperature, etc. It has been found that by adding 10 wt% LVPF (i.e., r = 0.1) to the cathode material blend, the blended cathode material begins to show these safety benefits, and it has been shown that by adding 20 wt% or more LVPF, the benefits become significant. In summary, it has been found that increasing the amount of LVPF in the blended cathode material provides a correspondingly increased safety improvement. On the other hand, increasing the amount of LVPF may reduce the energy density, as the energy density of LVPF is lower than that of some NMC cathode materials, such as NMC811. Therefore, in this exemplary embodiment, in order to achieve the benefit of improved safety without significantly sacrificing energy density, a blended cathode material wherein 20% to 40% by weight of LVPF (0.2 ≤ r ≤ 0.4) is blended with a non-phosphate cathode material (e.g., NMC, NCA, LCO, LNMO, etc.) is specifically disclosed.

[0175] The electrolyte solution may contain known additives used in non-aqueous lithium-ion batteries.
[0176] One type of additive that can be included in the electrolyte solution is a gas generator for implementing a pressure-type current interruption device (CID). Exemplary gas generators include cyclohexylbenzene (CHB), biphenyl, and fluorinated biphenyl, which have oxidation potentials lower than the oxidation potentials of the solvent in the electrolyte solution. Separators that prevent dendrite growth are also known.
[0180] Conventional types of separators include microporous membranes, nonwoven membranes, electrospun membranes, membranes with modified outer surfaces, composite membranes, and polymer blends. In one embodiment, the separator is a microporous membrane made of a polyolefin-based material, such as a microporous membrane made of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), etc.
[0181] In some implementations, the battery does not include an electrolyte solution and a separator. Instead, a solid electrolyte layer (i.e., a solvent-free electrolyte) that functions as both a separator and an electrolyte solution can be used, such as a solid ion-conducting polymer in contact with both the negative and positive electrodes. Solid electrolytes rely on ions hopping across a rigid structure. Solid electrolytes can also be referred to as fast ion conductors or superion conductors. Solid electrolytes can also be used to electrically insulate the positive and negative electrodes of the battery while allowing ions, such as Li, to hop across the structure. + Conducted via electrolytes. In this case, the solid electrolyte layer can also be referred to as a solid electrolyte separator.
[0182] There are no particular restrictions on the use of solid electrolyte separators. Known solid electrolytes include polymer-based materials (e.g., polyethylene oxide (PEO), PEO-based materials (e.g., PEO-PPO, PEO-epoxychloropropane, methyleneoxy-PEO, PEO-PAAM, PEO-PMHS (polymethylhydrosiloxane), etc.), ceramic-based materials, and cellulose-based materials.

[0189] Example
[0190] In the following, although embodiments of the present disclosure are described in more detail by way of examples, the present disclosure is not limited thereto.
[0191] Example 1
[0192] In Example 1, a single-layer pouch cell with the following configuration was prepared. For each cell, LVPF (LiVPO4F) as the first active material and NMC622 (LiNi) as the second active material were used. 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2The cathode is manufactured by blending the first active material with the second active material in a weight ratio (i.e., r:(1-r)) of 0.1:0.9 to 1:0 (i.e., the weight ratio of the battery ranges from 10% LVPF to 100% LVPF); the anode is Li metal; and the electrolyte is 1M LiPF6 in an organic solvent blend of ethylene carbonate, ethyl methyl carbonate, and dimethyl carbonate (with a volume ratio (EC / EMC / DMC) of 1:1:1). The configurations of the batteries of Example 1 are summarized in Table 1 below.
[0193] Table 1
[0194]
[0195] The prepared battery was tested as follows.
[0196] State of charge and depth of discharge (DOD)
[0197] As mentioned above, LVPFs are found to have a very flat voltage plateau for state of charge (SOC) or depth of discharge (DOD), making it difficult (if not impossible) for BMS to detect SOC or DOD by voltage. This is, for example, in... Figure 1 and Figure 2 As shown in the diagram. To generate... Figure 1 and Figure 2 The curve in the figure shows that the prepared battery was charged at a constant rate (0.1C) at a temperature of approximately 25°C. Figure 1 ) or discharge ( Figure 2 ).
[0198] like Figure 1 and Figure 2 As shown, battery 1A, containing only LVPF, exhibits a very flat voltage for both SOC during charging and DOD during discharging. However, batteries 1B to 1E demonstrate that blending LVPF with NMC as a second active material produces a slope at the start of charging and the end of discharging. This allows the BMS to detect either SOC or DOD via voltage.
[0199] Ratio performance
[0200] The rate performance of the prepared battery was also tested (specific capacity retention (%) at different current (C) rates). The results are shown in... Figure 3 As shown, LVPF significantly improves the rate performance of NMC, especially at higher C rates.
[0201] Capacity retention
[0202] The capacity retention of the prepared battery was also tested. The results are shown in... Figure 4As shown, blending these cathode materials improved the cycle life of both LVPF and NMC. For example, the best capacity retention was achieved in cell 1D (r = 0.4 (LVPF 40 wt%; NMC 60 wt%)) and cell 1C (r = 0.7 (LVPF 70 wt%; NMC 30 wt%)), while the worst capacity retention was achieved in cell 1A (r = 1 (LVPF 100 wt%)) and cell 1E (r = 0.1 (LVPF 10 wt%; NMC 90 wt%)).
[0203] Example 2
[0204] In Example 2, a single-layer pouch cell with the same configuration as in Example 1 was prepared, except that the second active material was LFMP (LiFe2+). 0.22 Mn 0.78 PO4). The battery configuration is summarized in Table 2 below.
[0205] Table 2
[0206]
[0207] The prepared battery was tested as follows.
[0208] Ratio performance
[0209] The rate performance of the prepared battery was tested (the retention rate of specific capacity (%) at different current (C) rates). The results are shown in... Figure 5 As shown, LVPF significantly improves the rate performance of LFMP, especially at higher C rates.
[0210] The addition of LVPF also improved the processability of LFMP, demonstrating that LVPF has excellent processability. For example, it was found that blending LVPF with LFMP made the slurry more stable over time and easier to coat, thus making both the slurry preparation process and the electrode coating process more controllable and robust.
[0211] Various modifications and alternatives are readily possible within this disclosure, and specific embodiments thereof are described in detail herein.
