[0018] The following specific embodiments relate to the accompanying drawings. The same figure numbers may be used to identify the same or similar elements in different drawings. In the following description, for the purpose of illustration and not limitation, specific details, such as specific structures, architectures, interfaces, technologies, etc., are set forth to provide a thorough understanding of the various aspects of each embodiment. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art who benefit from the present disclosure that the various aspects of each embodiment can be practiced in other examples that deviate from these specific details. In some cases, descriptions of well-known devices, circuits, and methods are omitted so that the description of the various embodiments will not be obscured by unnecessary details. For the purposes of this document, the phrase "A or B" refers to (A), (B), or (A and B).
[0019] Generally speaking, carrier aggregation (CA) can be used to increase the data rate of user equipment (UE) communications. CA enables the UE to receive from and / or transmit to multiple cells. These cells include a primary cell (PCell) in the case of a single cell group, or a primary secondary cell (PSCell) in the case of multiple cell groups. These cells also include a secondary cell (SCell) in the case of single and multiple cell groups. An SCell activation process can be performed, whereby the UE and the base station exchange information about the SCell. For example, the base station sends a channel state information (CSI) reference signal (RS) about the SCell to the UE, and the UE then performs measurements based on the CSI-RS and sends a CSI report.
[0020] Under certain conditions, the UE may cancel the reception of CSI-RS, potentially resulting in the cancellation of the SCell activation process, an increase in the waiting time before the SCell is activated, and an inability to increase the data rate at the same time. To alleviate this situation, different methods are possible and can be used in combination or independently of each other. In one example, the SCell activation process may be extended for a duration, where the length of the duration is based on the number of CSI-RS receptions canceled, and where the number may be bounded by an upper limit. In another example, the base station may use specific configuration parameters to avoid the cancellation of the UE's CSI-RS reception. In yet another example, the UE and the base station may use specific information to perform CSI-RS reception / transmission on the activated SCell. In this example, the base station may configure the UE for periodic or semi-persistent CSI-RS reception, and then send information indicating non-periodic CSI-RS reception. Then, the UE may process the information, receive non-periodic CSI-RS, and respond with a CSI report.

[0034] Figure 1 A network environment 100 is shown according to some embodiments. The network environment 100 may include a UE 104 and a gNB 108. The gNB 108 may be a base station that provides a wireless access cell, such as a third generation partnership project (3GPP) new radio (NR) cell through which the UE 104 can communicate with the gNB 108. The UE 104 and the gNB 108 may communicate over an air interface compatible with 3GPP technical specifications, such as those defining fifth generation (5G) NR system standards.
[0035] The gNB 108 may transmit information (e.g., data and control signaling) in the downlink direction by mapping logical channels onto transport channels and mapping transport channels onto physical channels. Logical channels may transfer data between the radio link control (RLC) layer and the medium access control (MAC) layer; transport channels may transfer data between the MAC and PHY layers; and physical channels may transfer information across the air interface. Physical channels may include a physical broadcast channel (PBCH), a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH), and a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH).
[0036] The PBCH may be used to broadcast system information that the UE 104 may use to initially access a serving cell. The PBCH may be transmitted in a synchronization signal (SS) / PBCH block along with a physical synchronization signal (PSS) and a secondary synchronization signal (SSS). The SS / PBCH block (SSB) may be used by the UE 104 during a cell search procedure and for beam selection.
[0037] The PDSCH may be used to transfer end-user application data, Signaling Radio Bearer (SRB) messages, system information messages (in addition to, for example, the MIB), and paging messages.
[0038] The PDCCH may convey downlink control information (DCI), which is used by the gNB 108 scheduler to allocate uplink and downlink resources. DCI may also be used to provide uplink power control commands, configure the slot format, or indicate that preemption has occurred.
[0039] The gNB 108 may also transmit various reference signals to the UE 104. The reference signals may include demodulation reference signals (DMRS) for the PBCH, PDCCH, and PDSCH. The UE 104 may compare the received version of the DMRS with the transmitted known DMRS sequence to estimate the impact of the propagation channel. The UE 104 may then apply the inverse channel of the propagation channel during the demodulation process of the corresponding physical channel transmission.
[0040] Reference signals may also include CSI-RS. CSI-RS may be a multi-purpose downlink transmission that may be used for CSI reporting, beam management, connected mode mobility, radio link failure detection, beam failure detection and recovery, and fine tuning of time and frequency synchronization.
[0041] Reference signals and information from physical channels can be mapped to resources of a resource grid. For a given antenna port, subcarrier spacing configuration, and transmission direction (e.g., downlink or uplink), there is a resource grid. The basic unit of the NR downlink resource grid can be a resource element, which can be defined by one subcarrier in the frequency domain and one orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol in the time domain. Twelve consecutive subcarriers in the frequency domain can constitute a physical resource block (PRB). A resource element group (REG) can include one PRB in the frequency domain and one OFDM symbol in the time domain, such as twelve resource elements. A control channel element (CCE) can represent a resource group used to transmit a PDCCH. One CCE can be mapped to multiple REGs, for example, six REGs.
[0042] Transmissions using different antenna ports may experience different radio channels. However, in some cases, different antenna ports may share common radio channel characteristics. For example, different antenna ports may have similar Doppler shift, Doppler spread, average delay, delay spread or spatial reception parameters (e.g., characteristics associated with the angle of arrival of the downlink received signal at the UE). Antenna ports that share one or more of these large-scale radio channel characteristics may be considered to be quasi-co-located (QCL) with each other. 3GPP has specified four types of QCL to indicate which specific channel characteristics are shared. In QCL Type A, antenna ports share Doppler shift, Doppler spread, average delay and delay spread. In QCL Type B, antenna ports share Doppler shift and Doppler spread. In QCL Type C, antenna ports share Doppler shift and average delay. In QCL Type D, antenna ports share spatial receiver parameters.
[0043] The gNB 108 may provide transmission configuration indicator (TCI) status information to the UE 104 to indicate the QCL relationship between antenna ports used for reference signals (e.g., synchronization signals / PBCH or CSI-RS) and downlink data or control signaling (e.g., PDSCH or PDCCH). The gNB 108 may use a combination of RRC signaling, MAC control element signaling, and DCI to inform the UE 104 of these QCL relationships.
[0044] UE 104 may use physical uplink channels to transmit data and control information to gNB 108. Different types of physical uplink channels are possible, including, for example, a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) and a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH). Where PUCCH carries control information from UE 104 to gNB 108, such as uplink control information (UCI), while PUSCH carries data traffic (e.g., end-user application data) and may carry UCI.
[0045] The UE 104 and the gNB 108 may perform beam management operations to identify and maintain desired beams for transmissions in the uplink and downlink directions. Beam management may be applied to both PDSCH and PDCCH in the downlink direction and PUSCH and PUCCH in the uplink direction.
[0046] In one example, communications with gNB 108 and / or base stations may use channels in a frequency range 1 (FR1) band (between 40 megahertz (MHz) and 7,125 MHz) and / or a frequency range 2 (FR2) band (between 24,250 MHz and 52,600 MHz). The FR1 band includes licensed bands and unlicensed bands. The NR unlicensed band (NR-U) includes spectrum shared with other types of radio access technologies (RATs) (e.g., LTE-LAA, WiFi, etc.). A listen-before-talk (LBT) procedure may be used to avoid or minimize conflicts between different RATs in NR-U, whereby a device should apply a clear channel assessment (CCA) check before using a channel.
[0047] like Figure 1 As further shown, the network environment 100 can further include a base station 112 to which the UE 104 can also connect. The base station 112 supports the same RAT as the gNB 108 (e.g., the base station 112 is also a gNB). Additionally or alternatively, the base station 112 supports a different RAT (e.g., a long term evolution (LTE) eNB).
[0048] In an example, UE 104 supports dual connectivity (DC), where UE 104 can be simultaneously connected and exchange data with gNB 108 and base station 112. Additionally or alternatively, UE 104 supports carrier aggregation (CA), where UE 104 can be simultaneously connected and exchange data with gNB 108 and / or base station 112 through multiple component carriers (CCs). A component carrier may be referred to as a serving cell and may be configured as a PCell, a PSCell, or a SCell.
[0049] In order to improve resource usage when configuring CA (e.g., processing burden on UE 104, battery usage of UE 104, channel management, and load balancing, etc.), an activation / deactivation mechanism for SCell is supported. Generally speaking, if UE 104 is configured with one or more SCells, gNB 108 can activate and deactivate the configured SCells. Activation and deactivation are generally not applicable to PCell (or PSCell). After the SCell is configured, such as via higher layer signaling, the SCell is in a deactivated state. The SCell activation process is used to activate the SCell and enable transmission / reception on the SCell (e.g., PDSCH, PDCCH, PUSCH of the SCell). The SCell activation process can be triggered when, for example, more data throughput is required or communication traffic on the PCell (or PSCell) is load balanced. The SCell can be activated based on its channel quality, and if its channel quality is low, the SCell can be deactivated.
[0050] Channel state information (CSI) may be used during SCell activation to determine the channel quality of the SCell. For example, gNB 108 may send a CSI-RS signal to UE 1044, which responds with a CSI report. The report may include a channel quality indicator (CQI) indicating the channel quality of the SCell, as well as other information. Different methods for CSI reporting (including Figure 2 The periodic CSI report shown in Figure 3 Semi-persistent CSI reporting as shown or as Figure 4 Aperiodic CSI reporting as shown) is possible.
[0051] Figure 2 An example of periodic CSI reporting 200 according to some embodiments is shown. Generally, UE 210 is configured by gNB 220 to periodically transmit CSI reports based on periodic transmission of CSI-RS from gNB 220. For clarity and brevity, the periodically transmitted CSI-RS is referred to herein as periodic CSI-RS (P-CSI-RS). Periodic reception of CSI-RS is also referred to as P-CSI-RS reception.
[0052] like Figure 2 As shown, the gNB 220 configures the UE 210 for P-CSI-RS reception via a higher layer configuration, such as by sending an RRC parameter to the UE 210. The RRC parameter may be included, for example, in reportSlotConfig, and identifies the periodicity of the CSI-RS. Generally speaking, the RRC parameter includes a first parameter associated with the periodic reception of the CSI-RS by the UE 210, such as configuration information indicating to the UE 210 how to perform the P-CSI-RS reception. For example, the first parameter includes a CSI-RS validation indication, such as CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16. In the case of sharing spectrum with other RATs, such as in the NR-U band, the RRC parameter may also indicate configuration information related to the shared spectrum. For example, the RRC parameter includes a second parameter indicating a channel occupancy (CO) duration for the P-CSI-RS and a third parameter indicating a time slot associated with the reception of the P-CSI-RS. In one example, the two parameters include CO-DurationPerCell-r16 and SlotFormatIndicator, respectively.
[0053] Once UE 210 is configured, no lower layer triggers may be required to initiate the SCell activation process. Instead, gNB 220 may periodically send CSI-RS on the SCell to UE 210. UE 210 may then periodically receive CSI-RS and generate and send periodic CSI reports.
[0054] Figure 3 An example of semi-persistent CSI reporting 300 according to some embodiments is shown. Generally, the UE 310 is configured by the gNB 320 to semi-persistently transmit CSI reports based on periodic transmission of CSI-RS from the gNB 320. Semi-persistence refers to periodic transmission and reception at an initial trigger (e.g., after a trigger, transmission and reception are periodically repeated without additional triggers). For clarity and brevity, the semi-persistently transmitted CSI-RS is referred to herein as a semi-persistent CSI-RS (SP-CSI-RS). Semi-persistent reception of a CSI-RS is also referred to as SP-CSI-RS reception.
[0055] like Figure 3 As shown, the gNB 320 configures the UE 310 for SP-CSI-RS reception via a higher layer configuration (such as by sending an RRC parameter to the UE 310). The RRC parameter may be included in, for example, reportSlotConfig, and identifies the period of the CSI-RS. Generally speaking, the RRC parameter includes a first parameter associated with the semi-persistent reception of the CSI-RS by the UE 310, such as configuration information indicating to the UE 310 how to perform SP-CSI-RS reception. For example, the first parameter includes CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16. In the case of sharing spectrum with other RATs, such as in the NR-U band, the RRC parameter may also indicate configuration information related to the shared spectrum. For example, the RRC parameter includes a second parameter indicating the CO duration for the SP-CSI-RS and a third parameter indicating the time slot associated with the reception of the SP-CSI-RS. In one example, the two parameters include CO-DurationPerCell-r16 and SlotFormatIndicator, respectively.
[0056] Once UE 310 is configured, a lower layer trigger such as a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) is sent from gNB 320 to UE 310 to initiate the SCell activation process. Then, no additional trigger may be required. Instead, gNB 320 may periodically send CSI-RS on the SCell to UE 310. Then, UE 310 may periodically receive CSI-RS and generate and send periodic CSI reports.
[0057] Figure 4An example of an aperiodic CSI report 400 according to some embodiments is shown. Generally, a UE 410 is configured by a gNB 420 to transmit a CSI report based on an aperiodic transmission of a CSI-RS from the gNB 420. A lower layer trigger may be used prior to each aperiodic transmission of a CSI-RS from the gNB 420, followed by a CSI report by the UE 410. For clarity and brevity, a CSI-RS transmitted on an aperiodic basis is referred to herein as an aperiodic CSI-RS (AP-CSI-RS). Aperiodic reception of a CSI-RS is also referred to as AP-CSI-RS reception.
[0058] like Figure 4 As shown, gNB 420 configures UE 410 for AP-CSI-RS reception via higher layer configuration, such as by sending RRC parameters to UE 410. The RRC parameters may be included, for example, in reportSlotOffsetList and may indicate a difference between lower layer triggers and aperiodic CSI-RS transmissions (e.g., Figure 4 The first timing offset (or time slot offset) between the second arrow and the third arrow in FIG. 1 and the non-periodic transmission of the CSI report between the lower layer trigger item and the CSI report (for example, Figure 4 In the case of sharing spectrum with other RATs, such as in the NR-U band, the RRC parameters do not need to include CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16, CO-DurationPerCell-r16, or SlotFormatIndicator.
[0059] Once UE 410 is configured, a lower layer trigger such as a MAC CE or DCI is sent from gNB 420 to UE 410 to initiate the SCell activation procedure. Based on a first timing offset, gNB 420 may transmit an AP-CSI-RS on the SCell to UE 410. Based on a second timing offset, UE 410 may send a periodic CSI report. If additional CSI reports are required, the AP-CSI-RS transmission and the CSI report transmission may be repeated after another lower layer trigger.
[0060] Figure 5 An example of transmitting a valid CSI report during the SCell activation process according to some embodiments is shown. Figure 5In the illustration of , non-extended CSI reporting 500 is performed, whereby the UE sends a valid CSI report without canceling CSI-RS reception or any additional delay beyond the time required to receive and process the CSI-RS. The SCell activation process may start at a timing when the UE receives a MAC CE command for SCell activation and end at a timing when the UE reports valid CSI for the target SCell being activated to the network (e.g., to the gNB).
[0061] As shown, the UE receives a MAC CE to activate the SCell, where the MAC CE may identify the SCell. The UE may require a first time interval to decode the MAC CE and adjust its radio frequency (RF) receive chain to enable reception and processing of the CSI-RS on the SCell. The UE may require a second time to adjust its baseband chain, identify the SCell, and perform time / frequency tracking so that the CSI-RS can be received and processed to generate a CSI report. After the first time interval and before the second time interval, the network may send multiple CSI-RS, and in response, the UE may respond with an invalid CSI report (e.g., a report with a channel quality indicator (CQI) set to zero). Only after the second time interval, the UE may receive the CSI-RS, perform related measurements, and generate and send a valid CSI report. The transmission shown is periodic, where the time interval between two CSI-RS is the CSI-RS period. When the trigger item is a MAC CE, SP-CSI-RS is used, similar to Figure 3 When no MAC CE is triggered, P-CSI-RS is used, similar to Figure 3 For AP-CSI-RS, the network (e.g., gNB) may transmit the AP-CSI-RS after the end of the second time interval.
[0062] In general, the UE receives CSI-RS in a set of symbols within a frame of the downlink channel of the SCell (e.g., within a set of time slots of a subframe of a frame). The CSI-RS resource may start at any OFDM symbol of a time slot, and it typically occupies one, two, or four OFDM symbols, depending on the number of ports configured. For time / frequency tracking, the CSI-RS may be periodic or aperiodic. The CSI-RS is transmitted in bursts of two or four symbols, which may be distributed over one or two time slots.
[0063] Figure 6 An example of extending the duration of the SCell activation process based on cancelled CSI reference signal (RS) reception according to some embodiments is shown. Figure 6In the illustration of , CSI cancellation based extension 600 for CSI reporting is used, whereby the UE may extend the duration of the SCell activation procedure before sending a valid CSI report (if any).
[0064] Similar to Figure 5 As shown in FIG. 1 , the SCell activation process may start from the timing when the UE receives a MAC CE command for SCell activation (e.g., in the case of SP-CSI-RS, or automatically in the case of P-CSI-RS). A first time interval and a second time interval may also be required before the UE can send a valid CSI report. Any CSI-RS transmitted during the second time interval may cause the UE to send an invalid CSI report. However, unlike Figure 5 Unlike the illustration of FIG. 1 , the UE may cancel CSI-RS reception (P-CSI-RS reception or SP-CSI-RS reception) and, upon such cancellation, extend the duration of the SCell activation procedure up to a maximum extension. The time interval defining the duration may depend on the number of canceled CSI-RS receptions (X) (also referred to as the number of canceled CSI-RS opportunities) and the CSI-RS periodicity, where the number (X) is limited by an upper limit (X) max ) definition.
[0065] As shown, the UE receives a MAC CE to activate the SCell, where the MAC CE may identify the SCell (e.g., in the case of SP-CSI-RS, the MAC CE may not be required in the case of P-CSI-RS). After the second time interval, the CSI-RS may be transmitted, where the CSI-RS indicates a CSI-RS transmission opportunity that can be received by the UE to generate and send a valid CSI report. However, due to certain conditions, the UE may cancel the reception of the CSI-RS (e.g., Figure 6 In contrast, the UE may generate and send an invalidation report. When canceling CSI-RS reception, the UE may extend the duration of the SCell activation procedure by a time interval (in Figure 6 In addition to the processing time and delay associated with CSI-RS processing, the length of the time interval may also depend on many factors, such as the number (e.g., how many times) of canceled CSI-RS receptions (e.g., in Figure 6 The upper bound of the time interval may be set based on the maximum number of allowed CSI-RS reception cancellations and the CSI-RS period. The conditions may be changed so that during the time interval, the UE may receive CSI-RS, perform related measurements, and generate and send a valid CSI report. Otherwise, the extended duration expires, no valid CSI report is sent, and the SCell activation process may be canceled.
[0066] Canceling CSI-RS reception may include shutting down or deactivating the UE's RF receive chain so that the UE does not receive the transmitted CSI-RS. Additionally or alternatively, canceling CSI-RS reception may include shutting down or deactivating the UE's baseband processor so that the received CSI-RS may not be processed.
[0067] In one example, these conditions may include: the UE is configured for periodic / semi-persistent reception of CSI-RS, but the configuration information sent to the UE is insufficient to perform periodic / semi-persistent reception and / or is equivalent to an aperiodic reception configuration. For example, in the case of NR-U where spectrum is shared between multiple RATs, 3GPP TS38.213 V16.3.0 (2020-10-02) specifies: "[For] operation with shared spectrum channel access, if the UE is provided with CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16, CO-DurationPerCell-r16 is not provided, and SlotFormatCombinationsPerCell is not provided, and if the UE is configured by higher layers to receive CSI-RS in a group of symbols of a time slot, then if the UE does not detect a DCI format indicating aperiodic CSI-RS reception or scheduling PDSCH reception in the group of symbols of the time slot, the UE cancels CSI-RS reception in the group of symbols of the time slot." In other words, in the case where the UE is configured for periodic or semi-persistent CSI-RS reception (according to the CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16 parameter or otherwise), the UE cancels CSI-RS, but does not have sufficient information for this type of reception in the case of NR-U shared band because channel occupancy and / or slot information is missing (e.g., CO-DurationPerCell-r16 and SlotFormatCombinationsPerCell parameters have not been received), DCI for AP-CSI-RS reception is not received, or scheduling information for PDSCH in the group of symbols is not received. Given these conditions, unless the duration of the SCell activation procedure is based on Figure 6 Otherwise, the target SCell being activated is deactivated before the UE completes the SCell activation procedure. For example, in the case where the UE is configured for periodic or semi-persistent CSI-RS reception, if the UE is provided with the CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16 parameter but not the CO-DurationPerCell-r16 and SlotFormatCombinationsPerCell parameters, or if the UE is not provided with any of these parameters, the UE cancels CSI-RS reception.
[0068] By extending the duration, an opportunity is provided to avoid further CSI-RS cancellation and successfully activate the SCell. For example, the UE may receive the missing RRC parameters (e.g., CO-DurationPerCell-r16 and SlotFormatCombinationsPerCell), DCI indicating aperiodic CSI-RS reception, and / or scheduling information for PDSCH in the group of symbols. If any of these receptions occur, the UE may receive and process the next CSI-RS during the extended duration in order to then send a valid CSI report.
[0069] Figure 7 An example of extending the duration of the SCell activation process based on cancelled CSI-RS reception and listen-before-talk (LBT) cancelled CSI-RS transmission according to some embodiments is shown. Figure 6 In the NR-U band, the UE may extend the duration of SCell activation based on the number of times CSI-RS reception is canceled and the CSI-RS periodicity, as well as other factors. In addition, here, the network (e.g., gNB) may cancel CSI-RS transmission due to the LBT process used in the NR-U band. The duration may be extended to also take into account the number of canceled CSI-RS transmissions (L4) (also referred to as the number of unavailable CSI-RS opportunities) and the CSI-RS periodicity. For example, the additional extension is based on the number (L4) multiplied by the CSI-RS periodicity and may have an upper bound. The upper bound may be based on a predefined maximum number (L4,max) multiplied by the CSI-RS periodicity.
[0070] As shown, after the second time interval ends, the UE cancels one CSI-RS reception. The network also cancels one CSI-RS transmission. Therefore, the duration of the SCell activation process is extended to take into account both the canceled CSI-RS reception and the canceled CSI transmission. The UE may receive the missing RRC parameters (e.g., CO-DurationPerCell-r16 and SlotFormatCombinationsPerCell), DCI indicating aperiodic CSI-RS reception, and / or scheduling information for the PDSCH in the group of symbols. If any of these receptions occur, the UE may receive and process the next CSI-RS during the extended duration in order to then send a valid CSI report.
[0071] See again Figure 6 and Figure 7, the number of cancelled CSI-RS opportunities and the number of unavailable CSI-RS opportunities may be used together or separately to extend the SCell activation process. Specifically, during the SCell activation process, if the UE is provided with CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16, CO-DurationPerCell-r16 is not provided, and SlotFormatIndicator is not provided, and if the UE is configured by a higher layer to receive P-CSI-RS or SP-CSI-RS in a group of symbols of a time slot for CSI reporting for SCell activation, the UE cancels the reception of the CSI-RS in the group of symbols of the time slot for SCell activation, and the UE extends the SCell activation process by at least X*T CSI-RS X is the number of CSI-RS opportunities cancelled by the UE. The UE extends the SCell activation procedure up to X max *T CSI-RS , where X≤X max If the cancelled CSI-RS opportunity exceeds X max , the UE abandons the SCell activation process.
[0072] In one example, the CSI reporting process for SCell activation in NR-U is delayed (e.g., a time interval of extended duration, expressed as ) can be limited to in is the delay (in milliseconds) including the uncertainty in obtaining the first available downlink CSI reference resource, the UE processing time for CSI reporting and the uncertainty in obtaining the first available CSI reporting resource, as specified in, for example, 3GPP TS 38.331 V16.20, (2020-09), and the additional delay in reception of CSI-RS due to unavailability of reference signal CCA and the additional delay in transmission of CSI reports due to CCA failure in uplink (UL); is the delay (in milliseconds) including the uncertainty in obtaining the first available downlink CSI reference resource, the UE processing time for CSI reporting, and the uncertainty in obtaining the first available CSI reporting resource, as specified in 3GPP TS 38.331 V16.2.0, (2020-09); T CSI-RS is the CSI-RS period; is the additional delay in transmission of CSI reports due to clear channel assessment (CCA) failure in the uplink; L4 is the number of opportunities when CSI-RS is unavailable (e.g., the number of unavailable CSI-RS opportunities); L4≤L4,max;; if then L4,max=2, and otherwise L4,max=1; if the UE is provided with CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16, CO-DurationPerCell-r16 is not provided, SlotFormatIndicator is not provided, and if the UE is configured by higher layers to receive P-CSI-RS or SP-CSI-RS in a set of symbols of the timeslot for CSI reporting for SCell activation, then X is the number of opportunities for which the UE canceled P-CSI-RS or SP-CSI-RS from reception (e.g., the number of canceled CSI-RS opportunities); X≤X max ; and X max Also available in different T CSI-RS Distinguish between.
[0073] In another example, the CSI reporting process for SCell activation in NR-U is delayed (e.g., a time interval of extended duration, expressed as ) can be limited to in is the delay (in milliseconds) including the uncertainty in obtaining the first available downlink CSI reference resource, the UE processing time for CSI reporting and the uncertainty in obtaining the first available CSI reporting resource, as specified in, for example, 3GPP TS 38.331 V16.20, (2020-09), and the additional delay in reception of CSI-RS due to unavailability of reference signal CCA and the additional delay in transmission of CSI reports due to CCA failure in uplink (UL); is the delay (in milliseconds) including the uncertainty in obtaining the first available downlink CSI reference resource, the UE processing time for CSI reporting, and the uncertainty in obtaining the first available CSI reporting resource, as specified in 3GPP TS 38.331 V16.20, (2020-09); T CSI-RS is the CSI-RS period; is the additional delay in transmission of the CSI report due to a clear channel assessment (CCA) failure in the uplink; if the UE is provided with CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16, CO-DurationPerCell-r16 is not provided, SlotFormatIndicator is not provided, and if the UE is configured by higher layers to receive P-CSI-RS or SP-CSI-RS in a set of symbols of the timeslot for CSI reporting for SCell activation, then L4 is the number of opportunities when CSI-RS is unavailable (e.g., the number of unavailable CSI-RS opportunities) and the number of opportunities when the UE cancels P-CSI-RS or SP-CSI-RS from reception (e.g., the number of canceled CSI-RS opportunities); L4≤L4,max;; if T CSI-RS ≤40mS, then L4,max=n1, and otherwise L4,max=n2; n1 and n2 are positive integers.
[0074] Figure 8 An example of an operational flow / algorithm structure 800 for extending the duration of a SCell activation procedure according to some embodiments is shown. The UE may implement the operational flow / algorithm structure 800 to extend the duration of the SCell activation procedure, where the procedure may succeed when a valid CSI report is transmitted, or may be canceled when the extended duration expires. The operational flow / algorithm structure 800 may be performed or implemented by a UE (such as, for example, UE 104, 1500) or a component thereof (e.g., processor 1504).
[0075] The operation flow / algorithm structure 800 may include: At 802, receiving information for secondary cell (SCell) activation from a base station. In some embodiments, the information may include RRC parameters for periodic CSI-RS reception that may trigger periodic CSI reporting. In some embodiments, the information includes a MAC CE for triggering semi-persistent CSI reporting.
[0076] The operation flow / algorithm structure 800 may also include: at 804, starting the SCell activation process based on the information. In some embodiments, in the case of periodic CSI reporting, the SCell activation process may be automatically started when a set of symbols of the expected P-CSI-RS signal in the time slot is determined according to the information. In some embodiments, in the case of semi-persistent CSI reporting, the SCell activation process may be started when a MAC CE element indicating a command for SCell activation is received.
[0077] The operation flow / algorithm structure 800 may also include: at 806, canceling the reception of CSI-RS sent by the base station, wherein the CSI-RS is associated with the UE generating a CSI report for SCell activation. In some embodiments, CSI-RS reception is canceled based on a set of conditions. For example, in the case of shared spectrum access using NR-U, if the UE is provided with CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16, CO-DurationPerCell-r16 is not provided, SlotFormatCombinationsPerCell is not provided, and if the UE is configured by a higher layer to receive CSI-RS in a group of symbols of a time slot, then if the UE does not detect a DCI format indicating non-periodic CSI-RS reception or scheduling PDSCH reception in the group of symbols of the time slot, the UE cancels the CSI-RS reception in the group of symbols of the time slot.
[0078] The operation flow / algorithm structure 800 may also include: at 808, based on the reception of the canceled CSI-RS, extending the duration of the SCell activation process. In some embodiments, the duration may be extended by a time interval to account for the number of canceled CSI-RS opportunities. If the base station also cancels CSI-RS transmission, the time interval may also account for the number of unavailable CSI-RS opportunities. Specific time interval Any of the above exemplary equations may be used for calculation.
[0079] Fig. 9 An example of signaling between a base station and a UE for configuring the UE to avoid cancellation of CSI-RS reception according to some embodiments is shown. The signaling relates to CSI cancellation avoidance 900 based on configuration parameters. In general, the base station (or more generally, the network) may initially configure the UE for periodic or semi-persistent CSI reporting. However, taking into account certain conditions, the UE may cancel P-CSI-RS reception or SP-CSI-reception. The base station may determine and send all necessary configuration information that mitigates these conditions, avoids cancellation, and requires SCell activation. If the necessary configuration information is not provided to the UE, SCell activation will not be required, which means that the behavior of the UE may be unpredictable and the base station may not expect the UE to perform SCell activation.
[0080] In an example of shared spectrum access using NR-U, the base station (or more generally, the network) configures the UE to receive P-CSI-RS or SP-CSI-RS in a set of symbols of a time slot for CSI reporting for SCell activation. For example, the base station sets the CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16 parameter. The base station determines the requirement to avoid configuring P-CSI-RS reception or SP-CSI-RS reception together with other RRC parameters indicating channel occupancy or time slot information (e.g., as defined in data stored in a memory and used in the executable logic of the base station, where the definition corresponds to a technical specification (TS)). Therefore, the base station also sets the CO-DurationPerCell-r16 and SlotFormatIndicator parameters for the UE. These three parameters are signaled to the UE via higher layer configuration (e.g., in the same RRC message or in a separate RRC message).
[0081] Fig.10 An example of an operational flow / algorithm structure 1000 for configuring a user equipment (UE) to avoid cancellation of CSI-RS reception according to some embodiments is shown. The base station may implement the operational flow / algorithm structure 1000 to avoid, for example, UE cancellation of P-CSI-RS reception or SP-CSI-RS reception. The operational flow / algorithm structure 1000 may be performed or implemented by a base station (such as, for example, gNB 108, 1600) or a component thereof (e.g., processor 1604).
[0082] The operation flow / algorithm structure 1000 may include: At 1002, it is determined that a CSI-RS is to be sent to a UE for CSI reporting by the UE during activation of an SCell. The SCell has a frequency band shared between multiple RATs. The CSI-RS is at least one of a periodic CSI-RS (P-CSI-RS) or a semi-persistent CSI-RS (SP-CSI-RS).
[0083] The operation flow / algorithm structure 1000 may also include: at 1004, determining a requirement to prevent the UE from canceling CSI-RS reception. The requirement indicates a plurality of configuration parameters to be sent to the UE. In some embodiments, the requirement indicates that if periodic or semi-persistent CSI reporting is configured (e.g., via CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16 parameter), the base station also needs to configure parameters related to channel occupancy and time slot information (e.g., CO-DurationPerCell-r16 and SlotFormatIndicator parameters).
[0084] The operation flow / algorithm structure 1000 may also include: at 1006, determining a plurality of configuration parameters based on the requirements, the plurality of configuration parameters including a first parameter associated with periodic or semi-persistent reception of a CSI-RS, a second parameter indicating a channel occupancy duration of the CSI-RS, and a third parameter indicating a time slot associated with CSI-RS reception. In some embodiments, the first parameter includes CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16, the second parameter includes CO-DurationPerCell-r16, and the third parameter includes SlotFormatIndicator.
[0085] The operation flow / algorithm structure 1000 may also include sending a plurality of configuration parameters to the UE at 1008. In some embodiments, higher layer signaling is used, such as one or more RRC messages are sent to the UE and include CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16, CO-DurationPerCell-r16, and SlotFormatIndicator parameters.
[0086] Fig.11An example of signaling between a base station and a UE for configuring a UE for periodic or semi-persistent CSI-RS reception and subsequently indicating aperiodic CSI-RS reception to avoid cancellation of CSI-RS reception according to some embodiments is shown. The signaling involves CSI cancellation avoidance 1100 based on information for aperiodic CSI-RS reception. In general, a base station (or more generally, a network) may initially configure the UE for periodic or semi-persistent CSI reporting, but may not provide the UE with all necessary configuration information to avoid cancellation of P-CSI-RS reception or SP-CSI-RS reception. For example, a base station may provide CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16 to the UE without providing CO-DurationPerCell-r16 and SlotFormatIndicator. Alternatively or additionally, the base station may configure the UE for P-CSI-RS reception or SP-CSI-RS reception, but may then dynamically change the CSI reporting to aperiodic. For example, the base station may provide CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16 to the UE without providing CO-DurationPerCell-r16 and SlotFormatIndicator. In both cases, after configuration, the base station may send information related to aperiodic CSI-RS reception, wherein the information allows the UE to determine the set of symbols for aperiodic CSI reception so as to then perform relevant measurements and send aperiodic CSI reports. Therefore, although the SCell activation process may initially be set for periodic or semi-persistent CSI reporting, the base station may dynamically change the setting to aperiodic CSI reporting by sending information. This information may be sent in DCI or cross-carrier scheduling information.
[0087] In one example, for operation with shared spectrum channel access using NR-U, if the UE is provided with CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16, CO-DurationPerCell-r16 is not provided, SlotFormatIndicator is not provided, and if the UE is configured by higher layers to receive CSI-RS in a set of symbols of a timeslot, if the base station (or more generally, the network) does not want the UE to cancel CSI-RS reception in the set of symbols of the timeslot on the target SCell being activated, then the base station may use a DCI format indicating non-periodic CSI-RS reception on the target SCell being activated. Alternatively or additionally, the network may use a cross-carrier scheduling command to indicate the availability of a set of symbols of a timeslot on the target SCell being activated.
[0088] After the UE receives the above configuration, the UE needs to interpret the intention from the base station. If the base station uses a DCI format indicating the reception of aperiodic CSI-RS on the target SCell being activated, the UE interprets that the P-CSI-RS or SP-CSI-RS for CSI reporting on the target SCell being activated is available on those indicated aperiodic CSI-RS symbols. If the base station uses a cross-carrier scheduling command to indicate the availability of a set of symbols of a time slot on the target SCell being activated, the UE interprets that the P-CSI-RS or SP-CSI-RS for CSI reporting on the target SCell being activated is available on those indicated PDSCH symbols.
[0089] like Fig.11 As shown, the base station may initially configure the UE for P-CSI-RS reception or SP-CSI-RS reception via higher layer signaling. For example, the base station may send an RRC message including the CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16 parameter. Subsequently, the UE may send information indicating aperiodic CSI-RS reception. If DCI is used, a specific DCI format may indicate the cell index of the SCell being activated. The cell index, another field in the DCI, or some other data structure may indicate to the UE that the SCell is being activated instead of becoming a serving cell. If cross-carrier scheduling information is used, in addition to specific symbols on the PDSCH to be used for aperiodic CSI-RS reception, the information may also indicate that the SCell is being activated instead of becoming a serving cell.
[0090] Fig.12 An example of an operational flow / algorithm structure 1200 for configuring a UE for periodic or semi-persistent CSI-RS reception to process information indicating aperiodic CSI-RS reception according to some embodiments is shown. The UE may implement the operational flow / algorithm structure 1200 to send an aperiodic CSI report even when configured for periodic or semi-persistent CSI reporting. The operational flow / algorithm structure 1200 may be performed or implemented by a UE (such as, for example, UE 104, 1500) or a component thereof (e.g., processor 1504).
[0091] The operation flow / algorithm structure 1200 may include: at 1202, receiving configuration parameters associated with periodic or semi-persistent reception of CSI-RS by the UE from a base station. The CSI-RS is associated with the UE generating a CSI report for SCell activation. In some embodiments, the UE may receive a CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16 parameter from the base station, but not a CO-DurationPerCell-r16 parameter, nor a SlotFormatIndicator parameter.
[0092] The operation flow / algorithm structure 1200 may also include: at 1204, receiving information indicating aperiodic reception of CSI-RS from a base station in a group of symbols of a time slot of the SCell being activated. In some embodiments, a DCI is received, wherein the DCI indicates that the SCell is being activated (rather than becoming a serving cell) and can be processed to identify the group of symbols on the PDSCH of the SCell. In some other embodiments, cross-carrier scheduling information may be received and may indicate the group of symbols on the PDSCH. CSI-RS may be sent on an aperiodic basis in the group of symbols.
[0093] The operational flow / algorithm structure 1200 may also include generating a CSI report based on the set of symbols, at 1206. In some implementations, the UE receives the aperiodic CSI-RS in the set of symbols, performs relevant measurements, and generates a valid CSI report.
[0094] The operational flow / algorithm structure 1200 may also include sending the CSI report to the base station at 1208. In some implementations, the CSI report is aperiodic.
[0095] Fig.13 An example of an operational flow / algorithm structure 1300 for a base station to configure a UE for periodic or semi-persistent CSI-RS reception and subsequently indicate aperiodic CSI-RS reception according to some embodiments is shown. The base station may implement the operational flow / algorithm structure 1300 to indicate aperiodic CSI reporting to the UE when the UE is initially configured for periodic or semi-persistent CSI reporting. The operational flow / algorithm structure 1300 may be performed or implemented by a base station (such as, for example, gNB 108, 1600) or a component thereof (e.g., processor 1604).
[0096] The operation flow / algorithm structure 1300 may include: at 1302, sending a set of configuration parameters associated with the periodic or semi-persistent reception of CSI-RS by the UE to the UE. The CSI-RS is associated with the UE generating a CSI report for SCell activation. In some embodiments, the base station may send a CSI-RS-ValidationWith-DCI-r16 parameter to the UE, but not a CO-DurationPerCell-r16 parameter, nor a SlotFormatIndicator parameter.
[0097] The operation flow / algorithm structure 1300 may also include: at 1304, sending aperiodic CSI-RS to the UE. In some embodiments, the aperiodic CSI-RS is included in a group of symbols of the time slot of the SCell being activated. In order to assist the UE in receiving the aperiodic CSI-RS, the base station may send information indicating the aperiodic reception of the CSI-RS in the group of symbols of the SCell being activated. In some embodiments, the information includes DCI. The DCI indicates that the SCell is being activated (rather than becoming a serving cell) and can be processed to identify the group of symbols on the PDSCH of the SCell. In some other embodiments, the information includes cross-carrier scheduling information. The cross-carrier scheduling information may indicate the group of symbols of the PDSCH.
[0098] The operation flow / algorithm structure 1300 may also include: at 1306, receiving a CSI report from the UE based on the aperiodic CSI-RS. In some embodiments, the CSI report is aperiodic. The UE may determine the symbol position of the CSI-RS based on the information, and may perform relevant measurements to generate and send the aperiodic CSI report.
[0099] Fig.14 A receiving component 1400 of a UE 104 is shown according to some embodiments. The receiving component 1400 may include an antenna panel 1404 including a plurality of antenna elements. The panel 1404 is shown as having four antenna elements, but other embodiments may include other numbers.
[0100] The antenna panel 1404 may be coupled to an analog beam forming (BF) component that includes a plurality of phase shifters 1408(1) to 1408(4). The phase shifters 1408(1) to 1408(4) may be coupled to a radio frequency (RF) chain 1412. The RF chain 1412 may amplify the received analog RF signal, down-convert the RF signal to baseband, and convert the analog baseband signal to a digital baseband signal that may be provided to a baseband processor for further processing.
[0101] In various embodiments, control circuitry, which may reside in a baseband processor, may provide BF weights (e.g., W1-W4) to phase shifters 1408(1) to 1408(4) to provide receive beams at antenna panel 1404, which may represent phase shift values. These BF weights may be determined based on channel-based beamforming.
[0102] Fig.15 UE 1500 according to some embodiments is shown. UE 1500 may be similar to Figure 1 UE 154 and is essentially interchangeable therewith.

In some embodiments, the UE may be a reduced capacity UE or an NR-Light UE.
[0104] UE 1500 may include a processor 1504, an RF interface circuit 1508, a memory / storage device 1512, a user interface 1516, a sensor 1520, a driver circuit 1522, a power management integrated circuit (PMIC) 1524, and a battery 1528. The components of UE 1500 may be implemented as an integrated circuit (IC), a portion of an integrated circuit, a discrete electronic device or other module, logical component, hardware, software, firmware, or a combination thereof. Fig.15 The block diagram of UE 1500 is intended to show a high-level view of certain of the components of UE 1500. However, some of the components shown may be omitted, additional components may be present, and different arrangements of the components shown may occur in other implementations.
[0105] Components of UE 1500 may be coupled to various other components via one or more interconnects 1532, which may represent any type of interface, input / output, bus (local, system, or extension), transmission line, trace, optical connection, etc., that allows various circuit components (on a common or different chip or chipset) to interact with each other.
[0106] The processor 1504 may include processor circuits such as a baseband processor circuit (BB) 1504A, a central processor unit circuit (CPU) 1504B, and a graphics processor unit circuit (GPU) 1504C. The processor 1504 may include any type of circuit or processor circuit that executes or otherwise operates computer-executable instructions (such as program codes, software modules, or functional processes from the memory / storage device 1512) to cause the UE 1500 to perform operations as described herein.
[0107] In some embodiments, the baseband processor circuit 1504A can access the communication protocol stack 1536 in the memory / storage device 1512 to communicate through a 3GPP compatible network. Generally speaking, the baseband processor circuit 1504A can access the communication protocol stack to: perform user plane functions at the PHY layer, MAC layer, RLC layer, PDCP layer, SDAP layer, and PDU layer; and perform control plane functions at the PHY layer, MAC layer, RLC layer, PDCP layer, RRC layer, and non-access layer (NAS) layer. In some embodiments, the PHY layer operations can be additionally / alternatively performed by components of the RF interface circuit 1508.
[0108] The baseband processor circuit 1504A may generate or process baseband signals or waveforms that carry information in a 3GPP-compatible network. In some embodiments, the waveforms used for NR may be based on cyclic prefix OFDM (CP-OFDM) in the uplink or downlink, and discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM) in the uplink.
[0109] The baseband processor circuit 1504A may also access group information 1524 from the memory / storage 1512 to determine search space groups in which multiple repetitions of the PDCCH may be transmitted.
[0110] The memory / storage 1512 may include any type of volatile or non-volatile memory that may be distributed throughout the UE 1500. In some embodiments, some of the memory / storage 1512 may be located on the processor 1504 itself (e.g., L1 cache and L2 cache), while other memory / storage 1512 is external to the processor 1504 but accessible via a memory interface. The memory / storage 1512 may include any suitable volatile or non-volatile memory, such as, but not limited to, dynamic random access memory (DRAM), static random access memory (SRAM), erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM), electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM), flash memory, solid-state memory, or any other type of memory device technology.
[0111] The RF interface circuit 1508 may include a transceiver circuit and a radio frequency front end module (RFEM), which allows the UE 1500 to communicate with other devices through a radio access network. The RF interface circuit 1508 may include various elements arranged in a transmit path or a receive path. These elements may include, for example, switches, mixers, amplifiers, filters, synthesizer circuits, control circuits, etc.
[0112] In the receive path, the RFEM may receive the radiated signal from the air interface via antenna 1524 and proceed to filter and amplify the signal (using a low noise amplifier). The signal may be provided to the transceiver's receiver, which down-converts the RF signal to a baseband signal that is provided to the baseband processor of processor 1504.
[0113] In the transmit path, the transmitter of the transceiver up-converts the baseband signal received from the baseband processor and provides an RF signal to the RFEM. The RFEM may amplify the RF signal through a power amplifier before the signal is radiated across the air interface via the antenna 1524.
[0114] In various embodiments, the RF interface circuit 1508 may be configured to transmit / receive signals in a manner compatible with NR access technology.
[0115] Antenna 1524 may include multiple antenna elements, each of which converts electrical signals into radio waves to travel through the air and converts received radio waves into electrical signals. [0120] In some embodiments, the PMIC 1524 may control or otherwise be part of various power saving mechanisms of the UE 1500. For example, if the platform UE is in the RRC_Connected state, in which the platform is still connected to the RAN node because it expects to receive traffic soon, then after a period of inactivity, the platform may enter a state known as discontinuous reception mode (DRX). During this state, the UE 1500 may be powered off for short time intervals, thereby saving power. If there is no data traffic activity for an extended period of time, the UE 1500 may transition to the RRC_Idle state, in which the device is disconnected from the network and no operations such as channel quality feedback, handovers, etc. are performed. The UE 1500 enters a very low power state and performs paging, in which the device wakes up periodically again to listen to the network and then powers off again. The UE 1500 may not receive data in this state; in order to receive data, the platform must transition back to the RRC_Connected state. Additional power saving modes may prevent the device from using the network for longer than the paging interval (ranging from a few seconds to several hours). During this time, the device is completely unable to connect to the network and can be completely powered off. Any data sent during this time will be significantly delayed, and it is assumed that the delay is acceptable.
[0121] The battery 1528 can power the UE 1500, but in some examples, the UE 1500 can be installed and deployed in a fixed location and can have a power source coupled to the power grid. The battery 1528 can be a lithium-ion battery, a metal-air battery such as a zinc-air battery, an aluminum-air battery, a lithium-air battery, etc. In some specific implementations, such as in vehicle-based applications, the battery 1528 can be a typical lead-acid car battery.
