[0002] This application claims the benefit of priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2022-0181906 filed on December 22, 2022, Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0031738 filed on March 10, 2023, and Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0185439 filed on December 19, 2023, in the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety.
[0003] The present disclosure relates to a battery pack and a device including the same, and more particularly, to a battery pack having improved sealing performance and space efficiency while enhancing cooling performance, and a device including the same. Background Art
[0004] As technology develops and demands for mobile devices increase, the demand for secondary batteries as energy sources is rapidly increasing. Therefore, various studies have been conducted on batteries that can meet various demands.
[0005] Secondary batteries are attracting much attention as energy sources for power drive devices such as electric bicycles, electric vehicles, and hybrid electric vehicles, and as energy sources for mobile devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras, and notebook computers.
[0006] Recently, as demand for large-capacity secondary battery structures (including utilization of secondary batteries as energy storage sources) continues to grow, demand for multi-module structured battery packs incorporating battery modules having a plurality of secondary batteries connected in series / parallel is increasing.
[0007] Meanwhile, when a plurality of battery cells are connected in series or parallel to configure a battery pack, a battery module including at least one battery cell is generally first configured, and then the battery pack is configured by using the at least one battery module and adding other components.
[0008] Since the battery cells that make up such medium or large battery modules include secondary batteries that can be charged and discharged, such high-output, high-capacity secondary batteries generate a large amount of heat during the charging and discharging process. In this case, in a narrow space, the heat generated from multiple battery cells may accumulate, so that the temperature can rise faster and excessively. In other words, battery modules stacked with multiple battery cells and battery packs equipped with these battery modules can achieve high output, but it is not easy to dissipate the heat generated from the battery cells during charging and discharging. When the battery cells are not properly dissipated, the degradation of the battery cells is accelerated, the life of the battery cells is shortened, and the possibility of battery cell explosion or fire is increased.
[0009] Furthermore, battery modules included in vehicle battery packs are often exposed to direct sunlight and may be exposed to high temperatures, for example, in summer or in desert areas. Furthermore, since multiple battery modules are centrally arranged to increase the vehicle's mileage, flames or heat generated in any one battery module can easily spread to adjacent battery modules, potentially leading to a fire or explosion in the battery pack itself.
[0010] Furthermore, since a battery pack is constructed by combining a plurality of battery modules, it is heavy and is not suitable for loading a plurality of batteries into a mobile device such as an automobile, and thus, an improvement in energy density is required.
[0011] Figure 1 is a diagram showing a conventional battery pack. Figure 2 yes Figure 1 Exploded perspective view of the battery pack.
[0012] Reference Figure 1 and Figure 2 The conventional battery pack 10 includes a lower pack frame 11 on which a plurality of battery modules 1 are mounted, an upper pack frame 12 located above the battery modules 1 , and internal beams 13 separating locations where the battery modules 1 are mounted within the battery pack 10 .
[0013] When battery modules 1 are installed in a battery pack 10 in this manner, the energy density of the battery pack 10 may decrease due to the internal beams 13 separating the battery modules 1. Consequently, a large number of battery packs 10 must be provided to meet the efficiency requirements of the device, etc. Furthermore, the weight of the battery pack 10 limits the number of battery packs 10 that can be installed in the device. Therefore, in order to reduce the weight of the battery pack 10 while increasing its energy density, it is necessary to install a larger number of battery modules 1 in the battery pack 10.
[0014] Figure 3 It shows Figure 2 FIG1 is a cross-sectional view of a cross section of a battery module included in a battery pack.
[0015] Reference Figure 3 A conventional battery module 1 includes a battery cell stack 3 including battery cells 2 stacked in a predetermined direction, and a module frame 4 that accommodates the battery cell stack 3. The battery cell stack 3 is fixedly positioned on a thermally conductive resin layer 5 located on the lower surface of the module frame 4. In this case, a heat sink 6 may be provided below the bottom of the module frame 4 to cool heat generated from the battery cell stack 3.
[0016] However, since heat sink 6 is in direct contact with battery cell stack 3 and does not receive heat transfer, its cooling efficiency is not very high. In particular, an air gap may form between the bottom of module frame 4 and thermally conductive resin layer 5, hindering heat transfer. A more efficient method for cooling battery module 1 is needed.
[0017] Furthermore, in conventional battery packs, HV cables connect to the corresponding modules and battery management system without separate sealing components. In this regard, conventional HV cable connection methods have the problem of not ensuring sealing performance. Furthermore, when applying cooling methods to improve the cooling performance of the battery pack, conventional HV cable connection methods need to further ensure sealing performance. However, this adds multiple components, reducing space efficiency and increasing manufacturing costs.
[0018] In summary, there is a need to develop a battery pack and a device including the battery pack having improved sealing performance and space efficiency while enhancing cooling performance. Summary of the Invention

[0056] In addition, throughout the description, when a part is referred to as “including” or “comprising” specific components, it means that the part may also include other components, and other components are not excluded unless otherwise stated.
[0057] Furthermore, throughout the description, when referred to as a “plane,” this means that the target portion is viewed from the upper side, and when referred to as a “cross section,” this means that the target portion is viewed from the side of a vertically cut cross section.
[0058] Now, a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present disclosure will be described.
[0059] Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. Figure 5 It shows Figure 4 A perspective view of the battery modules and HV connection components included in a battery pack.
[0060] Reference Figure 4 , a battery pack 1000 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure includes a plurality of battery modules 100 , a side frame 1100 accommodating the plurality of battery modules 100 , and an electric part 1500 in which electric components are mounted.
[0061] Furthermore, the plurality of battery modules 100 may form a battery module assembly aligned and arranged in one direction. As an example, the plurality of battery modules 100 may be aligned and arranged in the width direction (x direction) of the battery module 100. However, the arrangement direction of the plurality of battery modules 100 is not limited thereto and may be arranged in various other directions.
[0062] Reference Figure 4 The side frame 1100 may include a first side frame 1110 and a second side frame 1150. Here, the first side frame 1110 may extend along the width direction of each battery module 100 in the plurality of battery modules 100. In addition, the second side frame 1150 may extend along the length direction of the battery module 100.
[0063] Furthermore, when a plurality of battery modules 100 are arranged in a single direction, the second side frame 1150 is coupled to both side surfaces of the battery module assembly in which the plurality of battery modules 100 are arranged in a single direction, and then the first side frame 1110 may be coupled to the front and rear surfaces of the battery module assembly. However, the present disclosure is not limited thereto, and instead, the first side frame 1110 may be coupled to the front and rear surfaces of the battery module assembly, and then the second side frame 1150 may be coupled to both side surfaces of the battery module assembly.
[0064] The first side frame 1110 and the second side frame 1150 have fixing devices located at their contact portions, so that the first side frame 1110 and the second side frame 1150 can be coupled to each other. As an example, the first side frame 1110 and the second side frame 1150 are each provided with fixing devices such as bolts and nuts, so that the first side frame 1110 and the second side frame 1150 can be coupled to each other. However, the present disclosure is not limited thereto, and the contact portions of the first side frame 1110 and the second side frame 1150 can be fixed to each other using a separate fastening method such as welding or bonding.
[0065] Here, side frame 1100 may be made of a heat-insulating member. As an example, side frame 1100 may include an aluminum extrusion structure. As another example, side frame 1100 may be made of a combination of different metals, such as a clad metal, or may be a structure containing a heat-insulating material, such as aerogel or EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) foam. However, the present disclosure is not limited thereto, and side frame 1100 may be used without limitation as long as it is made of a heat-insulating material having a predetermined rigidity.
[0066] Therefore, the battery pack 1000 according to the present embodiment is configured such that the side frames 1100 are combined with both side surfaces, as well as the front and rear surfaces of a battery module assembly in which a plurality of battery modules 100 are aligned and arranged in a single direction, thereby ensuring the stability of the battery modules 100 from the external environment. In addition, the battery pack 1000 according to the present embodiment is configured to eliminate separate frame members that may be located on the upper and lower surfaces of the battery module assembly, thereby having the advantages of achieving a battery pack-free structure and increasing energy density and space efficiency.
[0067] Reference Figure 4 In the battery pack 1000 according to the present embodiment, the electric portion 1500 includes a BDU (Battery Disconnect Unit) module that controls electrical connection between other electric components and the battery module 100 .
[0068] The BDU module controls the electrical connections of the battery module 100 and can cut off the power supply between the power conversion device and the battery module 100. When the current exceeds a set range, the BDU module can cut off the power supply to the battery pack 1000, thereby ensuring the safety of the battery pack 1000.
[0069] In addition, the BDU module can be electrically connected to the plurality of battery modules 100 via a high voltage (HV) connection assembly 2000. That is, the HV connection assembly 2000 can be responsible for HV (high voltage) connection. Here, HV connection is a connection used as a power source to provide power, and HV connection refers to the connection between battery cells or the connection between battery modules.
[0070] Reference Figure 4 and Figure 5 The battery pack 1000 according to the embodiment of the present disclosure includes: a battery module 100, the battery module 100 includes: a plurality of battery cells (111, Figure 6 ) of a battery cell stack (110, Figure 6 ); and accommodating a battery cell stack 110 ( Figure 6 ), and a module frame 200 having an opening portion 210 formed on one side; and a plurality of HV connection assemblies 2000 that electrically connect adjacent battery modules 100.
[0071] The module frame 200 may be a single frame in the form of a metal plate, the upper surface, the lower surface, and the two side surfaces of which are integrated. As another example, the module frame 200 may include a metal plate-shaped lower frame, the upper surface and the two side surfaces of which are integrated, and an upper cover covering the upper surface of the lower frame. As another example, the module frame 200 may be a frame in the form of two L-shaped frames combined. As another example, the module frame 200 may be a frame of a four-plate structure combining an upper surface plate, a lower surface plate, a left plate, and a right plate. However, the present disclosure is not limited thereto, and any frame may be applied to this embodiment as long as it can protect the internal components of the battery module 100.
[0072] Here, the respective components of the module frame 200 may be joined by welding or the like in a state where corresponding edge portions contact each other, or may be fixed to each other by separate fastening members. In addition, the respective components of the module frame 200 may include a metal material having a predetermined strength.
[0073] Reference Figure 5 , the module frame 200 may include an opening portion 210, wherein the opening portion 210 may be formed on the upper surface of the module frame 200. As an example, the opening portion 210 includes a first opening portion 211 and a second opening portion 215, wherein the first opening portion 211 and the second opening portion 215 may be arranged to be spaced apart from each other along the width direction of the battery module 100. However, the number and position of the opening portion 210 are not limited thereto, and the terminal bus bar 330 ( Figure 7 ) varies depending on the number and location of the
[0074] More specifically, the opening portion 210 may include openings 211h and 215h that penetrate the upper surface of the module frame 200. As an example, the first opening portion 211 includes a pair of first openings 211h, and the second opening portion 215 may include a pair of second openings 215h. Here, the pair of first openings 211h and the pair of second openings 215h may be arranged to be spaced apart from each other along the width direction of the battery module 100. However, the number and position of the openings 211h and 215h are not limited thereto, and the terminal bus bar 330 ( Figure 7 ) varies depending on the number and location of the
[0075] Reference Figure 4 and Figure 5 In the battery pack 1000 according to the present embodiment, the HV connection assembly 2000 included in the battery modules 100 adjacent to each other and the terminal bus bar 330 ( Figure 7) can be connected through the opening portion 210. In addition, the HV connection assembly 2000 can be connected to the terminal bus bar 330 ( Figure 7 )connect.
[0076] Here, the terminal bus bar 330 ( Figure 7 ) can have different polarities from each other. As an example, Figure 4 As shown, the HV connection assembly 2000 can connect the terminal bus bar 330 ( Figure 7 ) and a terminal bus bar (330, Figure 7 ) electrical connection.
[0077] In addition, the terminal busbars 330 ( Figure 7 ) can have different polarities from each other. As an example, Figure 4 As shown, the HV connection assembly 2000 can connect the positive electrode portion in the BDU module with the terminal bus bar 330 ( Figure 7 ) is electrically connected. In addition, in the opposite case, the HV connection assembly 2000 can connect the negative electrode portion in the BDU module with the terminal bus bar 330 ( Figure 7 ) electrical connection.
[0078] Thus, in the battery pack 1000 according to the present embodiment, the terminal bus bar 330 ( Figure 7 ) and the BDU module can be electrically connected to the HV connection assembly 2000 through the opening portion 210 of the battery module 100, thereby ensuring the assembly tolerance margin and relatively simplifying the HV bonding method.
[0079] Figure 6 It shows Figure 5 FIG. 1 is a diagram of a battery cell stack included in a battery module. Figure 7 and Figure 8 It shows Figure 6 FIG2 is a diagram of a battery cell stack and a bus bar frame coupled to the front and rear surfaces of the battery cell stack. Figure 9 is magnified and shows Figure 8 Part of the diagram.
[0080] In the battery module 100 according to the present embodiment, the insulating coolant flows in the space within the module frame 200 and can directly cool the battery cells 111. More specifically, referring to Figures 5 to 8 , the battery module 100 may accommodate the battery cell stack 110 within the module frame 200 .
[0081] Here, refer to Figure 6 , the battery cell stack 110 may include a plurality of battery cells 111 and at least one flow path spacer 113 interposed between adjacent battery cells 111. In addition, the battery cell stack 110 may include insulating plates 115 interposed on both sides of the battery cell stack 110. In addition, although Figure 6 Although not shown, the battery cell stack 110 may further include a buffer pad interposed between adjacent battery cells 111. That is, the battery cell stack 110 may be formed by vertically stacking the battery cells 111, the flow path spacers 113, and the insulating plates 115 on the ground (a surface aligned with the XY plane) in a vertically upright manner.
[0082] As an example, preferably, the battery cell 111 is a soft-pack type battery cell. As an example, the battery cell 111 can be produced by housing the electrode assembly in a soft-pack shell of a laminate sheet including a resin layer and an inner layer, and then heat-sealing the sealing portion of the soft-pack shell. Such a battery cell 111 can be formed into a rectangular plate-like structure. The battery cell 111 can be configured in plurality, and the plurality of battery cells 111 are stacked to be electrically connected to each other, thereby forming a battery cell stack 110. Here, the number of battery cells 111 constituting the battery cell stack 110 can be adjusted according to circumstances.
[0083] Furthermore, the flow path spacer 113 is provided with a coolant flow path interposed between adjacent battery cells 111 so that at least a portion of the coolant flowing into the module frame 200 can directly contact the battery cells 111. Here, a plurality of coolant flow paths may be provided, and the coolant flow paths may extend along the length direction of the flow path spacer 113.
[0084] However, the battery module 100 according to another embodiment of the present disclosure may remove the flow path spacer 113 , and the insulating coolant flowing into the module frame 200 may flow through spaces between the upper and lower portions of the battery cell stack 110 and the module frame 200 .
[0085] Thus, the battery module 100 according to the present embodiment has the advantage that the battery cells 111 can be directly cooled by the insulating coolant, which can further improve the cooling efficiency of the battery module 100 .
[0086] Reference Figures 5 to 8The battery module 100 according to the present embodiment may further include bus bar frames 300 respectively located on the front and rear surfaces of the battery cell stack 110. Here, bus bars 310 and 330 electrically connected to electrode leads of the battery cells 111 included in the battery cell stack 110 may be located on the bus bar frames 300.
[0087] In addition, the battery module 100 may further include an end plate 500 covering the bus bar frame 30. Thus, the end plate 500 may physically protect the battery cell stack 110 and other electrical components from external impact.
[0088] Reference Figure 7 and Figure 8 , the bus bars 310 and 330 may include a plurality of bus bars 310 and a pair of terminal bus bars 330. Here, the plurality of bus bars 310 are fixed to the bus bar frame 300 and may be combined with electrode leads of the battery cells 111 drawn through electrode lead slits formed in the bus bar frame 300 so that the plurality of battery cells 111 may be electrically connected to each other.
[0089] The pair of terminal busbars 330 includes a first terminal busbar 331 and a second terminal busbar 335. The pair of terminal busbars 330 can be fixed to the busbar frame 300 and can be coupled to the electrode leads of the outermost battery cells 111 among the plurality of battery cells 111. In other words, the pair of terminal busbars 330 serve as high-potential terminals and can be electrically connected to the HV connection assembly 2000. As an example, the first terminal busbar 331 and the second terminal busbar 335 can have different polarities (positive or negative) from each other.
[0090] Reference Figure 5 、 Figure 7 and Figure 8 , one end portion of the terminal bus bar 330 includes a protrusion, wherein the protrusion may protrude from the bus bar frame 300 in a direction toward the end plate 500. As an example, the first terminal bus bar 331 includes a first terminal bus bar protrusion 331p protruding from the bus bar frame 300 in a direction toward the end plate 500, and the second terminal bus bar 335 may include a second terminal bus bar protrusion 335p protruding from the bus bar frame 300 in a direction toward the end plate 500.
[0091] In addition, the protrusion formed on the terminal bus bar 330 can be fastened to the bolt members 410 and 420 by bolting. Here, the bolt members 410 and 420 include bus bar bolts 411 and 415 and bus bar nuts 421 and 425, as shown in FIG. Figure 8 shown.
[0092] More specifically, refer to Figures 8 and 9A hole is formed through the center of the first terminal bus bar protrusion 331P, and the first bus bar bolt 415 and the first bus bar nut 425 can be fastened to the upper and lower portions of the hole by bolting. In addition, a hole is formed through the center of the second terminal bus bar protrusion 335P, and the second bus bar bolt 411 and the second bus bar nut 421 can be fastened to the upper and lower portions of the hole by bolting.
[0093] However, the present disclosure is not limited thereto and is Figure 8 and Figure 9 Differently, in this embodiment, the positions of the bus bar bolts 411 and 415 and the bus bar nuts 421 and 425 may be changed to fasten the bolts together.
[0094] Furthermore, the busbar frame 300 may be formed with at least one slit 300H through which the insulating coolant flows. That is, within the busbar frame 300, the insulating coolant can flow into and out of the space within the module frame through the at least one slit 300H. In other words, the at least one slit 300H can serve as a passage for the insulating coolant flowing in from the outside to flow toward the battery cell stack 110. Conversely, the at least one slit 300H can serve as a passage for the insulating coolant flowing into the module frame 200 to be discharged to the outside.
[0095] As one example, the at least one slit 300H may be formed at a position corresponding to the flow path spacer 113. In addition, the at least one slit 300H may have a size corresponding to that of the flow path spacer 113.
[0096] As another example, in a battery module 100 according to another embodiment of the present disclosure, when Figure 6 When the flow path spacer 113 is variously removed, at least one slit 300H may be formed at a position corresponding to a space between the upper and lower portions of the battery cell stack 110 and the module frame 200 .
[0097] Thus, the battery module 100 according to the present embodiment has an advantage in that the insulating coolant of the battery cells 111 can easily flow into and out of the module frame 200 , so that the cooling efficiency of the battery module 100 can be further improved.
[0098] Figure 10 It shows Figure 6 The battery cell stack is inserted into Figure 5 A diagram showing the states of the front and rear surfaces of a module frame in a battery module.
[0099] Reference Figure 5 、 Figure 6 and Figure 10The battery module 100 according to the present embodiment may include a pair of battery cell stacks 110a and 110b aligned in the length direction of the battery module 100. At this time, the module frame 200 may accommodate the pair of battery cell stacks 110a and 110b.
