Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to the field of controlling a display device in a vehicle, and in particular to the field of displaying content on a display device in a vehicle. In particular, the present invention relates to a method and a system for controlling a display device in a vehicle. Background Art
[0002] Modern vehicles (e.g., cars) are often provided with display devices for displaying content, such as information about the current journey (e.g., current speed, speed limit, etc.), navigation system information, driver assistance information, or any other content from the infotainment system or vehicle-related content. These display devices can provide useful information to the driver. However, many display devices are located in the center console, instrument panel, or even the steering wheel of the vehicle, so that the driver must take his eyes off the road and therefore cannot pay full attention to the traffic situation at the same time.
[0003] Some vehicles are equipped with a so-called head-up display (HUD). The HUD projects the content to be displayed onto a surface within the driver's field of vision, such as the vehicle's windshield or a transparent plate in front of the steering wheel. The displayed content may then appear above the hood of the vehicle or even on the road in front of the vehicle. This is conducive to the readability of the content, because the driver does not need to look away from the road or change focus. However, during driving, the driver may look in various directions. For example, when turning left or right, the driver may look in the corresponding direction. If the content displayed by the head-up display is in a fixed position, the driver will again have to take his eyes off the road. This is particularly relevant to driving safety, as looking in different directions between the road or driving direction and the display device may cause motion sickness in the driver. In particular, display devices with a large design, such as a large width, require the driver to make more head movements.
[0004] Attempts have been made to compensate for the driver's different viewing directions by adjusting the view of the displayed content (e.g., by moving the content displayed on the display device). However, when the displayed content is moved, the displayed content may have a distorted appearance to the driver. This may reduce readability and may require more attention to read the content, which may distract the driver from traffic conditions. Summary of the invention
[0005] The object of the present invention is to provide an improved method for displaying content on a display device of a vehicle. In particular, it is desirable to improve the readability of the displayed content taking into account specific driving situations (in particular including the driving direction of the vehicle and / or the gaze direction of the driver).
[0006] The solution to this problem is provided by the teaching of the independent claim. The teaching of the dependent claims provides various preferred embodiments of the invention.
[0007] A first aspect of the invention relates to a method, in particular a computer-implemented method, for controlling a display device in a vehicle. Content to be displayed by the display device is provided. Conditions related to a driving situation are determined and a view adjustment function is determined based on the determined driving-related conditions, the view adjustment function comprising a position adjustment and a perspective adjustment of a view of the content. An adjusted view of the content is determined according to the view adjustment function, and the content is displayed by the display device with the adjusted view.
[0008] The method can therefore be regarded as an improved method for controlling a display device in a vehicle. By applying not only a position adjustment but also a perspective adjustment to the view of the content to be displayed, the readability of the content can be improved for the driver of the vehicle. In particular for larger position adjustments, the view of the content may become distorted if no perspective adjustment is applied. The method can therefore contribute to driving safety, since it can ensure that the driver can read the displayed content in a convenient position, wherein distortions that may be caused by the position adjustment can be corrected by means of the perspective adjustment.
[0009] Additional benefits of the method can be achieved in the following manner: The adjustment of the view provides an enhanced user experience. The content can be positioned and can appear as the driver most likely expects. Thus, a seamless user experience can be created while driving. In other words, the displayed content can be integrated into the driver's field of view without distracting the driver from safe driving.
[0010] The term "vehicle" as used herein refers specifically to automobiles, including any type of motor vehicle, hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles, as well as other vehicles such as trucks, vans or buses.
[0011] The term "content" as used herein refers in particular to data that is processed to be displayed by a display device of a vehicle for reading by a user (in particular, the driver of the vehicle). The content may represent any type of information related to the vehicle, such as information obtained by a processing unit (such as an ECU) of the vehicle, information obtained by a navigation system or an infotainment system. The content may in particular represent data related to the vehicle's journey, such as the current speed, time, remaining fuel or power, or other data generally displayed by the dashboard of the vehicle. The content may also relate to navigation data, such as an indicator arrow, an indicator description, a street name, or any other navigation system information. In addition, driving assistance data may be represented by the content, such as a speed limit, a distance from another vehicle, etc. The content may also relate to other infotainment system information. The "view" of the content is the appearance of the content that the user sees on the display device. This may be a single image or an animated view.
[0012] The term "driving situation-related conditions" as used herein refers in particular to any conditions related to the driving situation of the vehicle. This may refer to the operation of the vehicle, such as driving direction, turning, speed, acceleration, braking action, etc. The driving situation may also refer to the driver, in particular the driver's actions related to the driving situation, including actions or reactions, such as the driver's movements, in particular the movements of the head or eyes, and the driver's line of sight (gaze direction).
[0013] The term "adjustment function" as used herein refers in particular to a function that can be applied to a view of the content in order to adjust the view in terms of position and perspective of the view, as will be explained below. The adjustment function can be applied to each pixel of the displayed view, which can cause at least one of a shift of the view in any direction, a rotation in any direction, or any deformation of the view. Thus, the adjustment function can be considered as a mapping function between a first view and a second view of the content, wherein the second view can be referred to as an "adjusted view".
[0014] The term "position adjustment" as used herein refers in particular to an adjustment of the position of the view of the content with respect to the view of the content on the display device. This may in particular include movement in any direction. Similarly, any rotation or tilt of the view may be considered a position adjustment.
[0015] The term "perspective adjustment" as used herein refers in particular to an adjustment of a view of the content with respect to the perspective of the content. This may in particular include any adjustment of the view, which affects the shape and / or size of the view. The perspective adjustment may be achieved by any deformation of the view, such as a trapezoidal or spherical deformation.
[0016] Where applicable, the terms "first", "second", "third", etc. in the description and claims are used to distinguish between similar elements and not necessarily to describe a sequential or chronological order. It is understood that the terms so used are interchangeable under appropriate circumstances, and that the embodiments of the invention described herein are capable of operation in sequences other than those described or illustrated herein.
[0017] When the term "comprises" or "comprising" is used in the present description and claims, it does not exclude other elements or steps. When an indefinite or definite article is used when referring to a singular noun, for example "a", "an", "the", this includes a plural of that noun unless expressly stated otherwise.
[0018] In addition, unless expressly stated otherwise, "or" refers to an inclusive or, not an exclusive or. For example, condition A or B is satisfied by any of the following: A is true (or exists) and B is false (or does not exist), A is false (or does not exist) and B is true (or exists), and A and B are both true (or exist).
[0019] Preferred embodiments of the method are described below, which can be combined arbitrarily with one another or with other aspects of the invention, unless such a combination is explicitly excluded or is technically not feasible.
[0020] In some embodiments, the condition related to the driving situation includes the driver's gaze direction. The driver's gaze direction, that is, the direction in which the driver actually looks, can advantageously provide an input parameter for the adjustment function. Independent of the actual movement of the vehicle, the driver's gaze direction can indicate where the content should be displayed by the display device for optimal readability for the driver. For example, the driver may look in a certain direction even before the vehicle actually turns in that direction. Similarly, the driver may change the gaze direction, for example, in order to change lanes. Since the displayed content can be within the driver's field of view, not only readability can be improved, but the risk of motion sickness can also be reduced.
[0021] In some related embodiments, the driver's gaze direction is determined by at least one onboard camera pointed at the driver to capture the movement of the driver's head and / or the driver's eyes. The use of a camera particularly provides a simple and effective method to determine the driver's gaze direction. The vehicle may be equipped with one or more cameras for other purposes that rely on the movement of the driver's head or eyes. Some applications may use eye tracking, which can be used to adjust the view of content to be displayed by a display device in the vehicle. However, in order to avoid making too many adjustments to the displayed content, which may be confusing or distracting, it is preferred to rely on head tracking rather than eye tracking.
[0022] In some embodiments, the condition related to the driving situation includes the driving direction of the vehicle. Alternatively or in addition to the driver's gaze direction, the driving direction can provide an input parameter for the adjustment function to adjust the view of the content. For example, when driving in a straight direction, the view of the content may not be adjusted. However, when turning left or right, the adjusted view of the content can be a view offset in the corresponding direction. Most likely, the driver will tend to look in the driving direction of the vehicle. Therefore, this offset in the corresponding direction can improve the readability of the content, while further improving the readability of the content through perspective adjustment. Since the displayed content can be within the driver's field of view, not only can readability be improved, but the risk of motion sickness can also be reduced.
[0023] In some related embodiments, the driving direction of the vehicle is determined by determining the steering wheel angle. The steering wheel angle can be detected by a corresponding vehicle sensor. Therefore, a simple method is provided to determine the driving direction of the vehicle. In particular, a certain amount of steering wheel angle in the left or right direction can cause the displayed content to move to the left or right, respectively, corresponding to the amount of the steering wheel angle. It will be appreciated that such adjusted view also includes perspective adjustment as described above.
[0024] In some embodiments, the position adjustment includes horizontally moving the content according to the driver's gaze-horizon-view. Drivers tend to look toward the horizon, rather than up and down, and they may turn their gaze along the horizon. Therefore, an effective way to adjust the view of the displayed content may be to move it horizontally. Depending on the distance to the center (which refers to the straight-ahead direction of the driver's gaze), the adjusted view of the content may include corresponding perspective corrections.
[0025] In some embodiments, the perspective adjustment is determined based on the position adjustment. In other words, the perspective adjustment can be dependent on the position adjustment. More specifically, the perspective adjustment can be determined so as to compensate for perspective distortion that may be caused by the position adjustment. Thus, the readability of the content displayed in the adjusted view can be improved regardless of the position where the content is displayed.
[0026] In some embodiments, the perspective adjustment includes deforming the content so that in each adjusted view of the content, the content appears to the driver in a consistent size ratio. In other words, preferably, the content displayed by the display device has a consistent appearance that is independent of the position of the content in the corresponding adjusted view. If the size ratio is always the same, the displayed content will not appear deformed to the driver. Although other perspective adjustments can be implemented, the perspective adjustment that is intended to achieve a consistent size ratio can be considered to be the most convenient for most users.
[0027] In some embodiments, the content is displayed on a virtual curved surface that at least partially surrounds the driver, and at least one of the position adjustment and the perspective adjustment includes movement of the content along the virtual curved surface. The center of curvature of the virtual curved surface can be in the area of the driver's head. The position of the driver's head can be determined, for example, by an in-cabin camera. When the driver's head is located at the center of the virtual curved surface, the view of the content moving along the virtual curved surface can always achieve the desired impression for the driver. The radius of curvature can be selected so that the virtual curved surface surrounds the driver's head, and more specifically, so that the virtual curved surface even surrounds the vehicle or is at least partially located outside the vehicle, especially in front of the vehicle. This can be particularly advantageous for a head-up display because the view of the content can easily appear in front of the driver, above the hood of the vehicle or on the road in front of the vehicle.
[0028] In some embodiments, the driving situation-related condition includes at least one of acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle, wherein the adjustment function is determined to make the content appear farther away from the driver in the adjusted view when the vehicle is accelerating, and the adjustment function is determined to make the content appear closer to the driver in the adjusted view when the vehicle is accelerating. This adjustment of the view can take into account the driver's natural far field of view or near field of view when accelerating and decelerating, respectively.
[0029] In some embodiments, a background is provided to be displayed together with the content. The view adjustment function may comprise movement of a background displayed by the display device relative to the displayed content. Movement of the background may create an impression of depth of the displayed view. This effect may be achieved in particular when the driver's gaze field is input into the adjustment function, and the user experience may be improved. Furthermore, it may be advantageous to separate the content to be displayed from the background. Adjustment of the view of the actual content together with a corresponding movement of the background may also contribute to reducing the risk of motion sickness. It will be appreciated that only slight movement of the background may be desired or required.
[0030] In some embodiments, the display device is a head-up display of the vehicle. The head-up display can be configured to display content so that the content appears in the windshield of the vehicle. Specifically, the content can appear in the area above the hood of the vehicle. Although the projection surface of the head-up display may only cover a limited area in front of the driver, modern head-up displays can cover a wider area extending through the windshield. For example, when the driver (of a left-hand drive vehicle) looks to the far right, the view of the content displayed by the head-up display can be moved to the right accordingly. By applying perspective adjustment, the content can always be clearly readable for the driver without distortion. In the case where the content can be displayed in a manner that the content appears on the road in front of the vehicle for the driver, the appearance of the content can be improved by the adjustment described above. The adjustment allows the content to appear correctly on the road not only for straight roads but also for curves. Similarly, it can be achieved that the content appears on the desired lane of the road.
[0031] In some embodiments, the display device is a display in the steering wheel of the vehicle. In this case, the display device will move when the steering wheel is turned. If the view of the displayed content is not adjusted, the content will change its orientation according to the steering wheel, for example, the content will appear upside down when the steering wheel is turned 90 degrees. Therefore, it is advantageous to adjust the position of the view, and the position adjustment may include a tilt or rotation of the content, wherein the tilt or rotation angle of the content can be selected according to the steering wheel angle, that is, in order to compensate for the rotation of the steering wheel. In addition to this, it is advantageous to apply a perspective adjustment to further improve the readability of the content, in particular for steering wheel angle changes that result in larger position changes of the display device, such as 45 to 135 degrees, in particular steering wheel angle changes of around 90 degrees.
[0032] In some embodiments, the display device is a display in at least one of a center console, a dashboard, a rearview mirror, and a side mirror of the vehicle. The method can also be applied to such a fixed display device to improve the readability of the content.
[0033] In some embodiments, the display device is a display in an area near the windshield. Such a display device may be located in an A-pillar, a door, or a side window of the vehicle. Given its location near the windshield, particularly to the side of the windshield, it is conceivable to extend the view of the head-up display. Since such a view would extend from the far left side of the vehicle to the far right side, the method may be particularly useful for adjusting the view of the displayed content.
[0034] In some embodiments, the content is displayed in a manner that is fully visible only to the driver. Possibly, the display device can be configured so that another passenger in the vehicle, in particular the co-pilot, cannot see any content or other content. This can be particularly advantageous for a wide head-up display, because the content may be moved to the far right into the co-pilot's field of view (for a left-hand drive vehicle), which may interfere with the co-pilot. For example, the display device can be configured to display driving-related content to the driver and entertainment content to the co-pilot. In particular, the display device can be at least partially polarized to allow the driver of the vehicle to see the content, while at least partially blocking the viewing of the content for the co-pilot.
[0035] In some embodiments, the vehicle has at least two display devices, and the position adjustment includes selecting one of the display devices, wherein the content is displayed by the selected display device with an adjusted view, in particular only by the selected display device. In this way, the content can be displayed by a corresponding one of the multiple display devices in the vehicle, which is suitable for driving-related conditions. For example, the content can be displayed only by the display device that the driver is actually looking at. This ensures that the driver can always read the displayed content, while other display devices outside the driver's field of view do not need to display the content.
[0036] The second aspect of the present invention relates to a data processing system configured to perform the method of the first aspect, i.e., a data processing system for controlling a display device in a vehicle. The data processing system may in particular be configured to perform the method of the first aspect by means of one or more computer programs. Additionally or alternatively, the configuration may be implemented in whole or in part by corresponding hardware. Specifically, the system comprises an evaluation unit and a control unit. The evaluation unit is configured to: determine conditions related to the driving situation and determine a view adjustment function based on the determined driving-related conditions, the view adjustment function comprising a position adjustment and a perspective adjustment of a view of the content, and determining an adjusted view of the content to be displayed according to the view adjustment function. The control unit is configured to control the display device to cause the display device to display the content with the adjusted view.
[0037] A third aspect of the invention is directed to a computer program or computer program product comprising instructions which, when executed on a data processing system according to the second aspect of the invention, cause the system to perform a method according to the first aspect of the invention.
[0038] The computer program (product) can be implemented in particular in the form of a data carrier on which one or more programs for executing the method are stored. Preferably, the data carrier is, for example, a CD, a DVD or other optical medium, or a flash memory module. It can be advantageous if the computer program product is intended to be traded as a separate product, which is independent of the processor platform on which the one or more programs are to be executed. In another implementation, the computer program product is provided as a file on a data processing unit, in particular on a server, and can be downloaded via a data connection, such as the Internet, or a dedicated data connection, such as a proprietary network or a local area network.
[0039] Thus, the system of the second aspect may have a program memory in which the computer program is stored. Alternatively, the system may also be configured to access an externally available computer program, such as a computer program on one or more servers or other data processing units, via a communication link, in particular to exchange data used during the execution of the computer program or data representing the output of the computer program.
[0040] The explanations, embodiments and advantages described above in conjunction with the method of the first aspect apply analogously to the other aspects of the invention. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0041] Further advantages, features and applications of the present invention will be presented in the following detailed description and accompanying drawings, in which:
[0042] Figure 1 Schematically illustrates an exemplary embodiment of the method according to the invention;
[0043] Figure 2 schematically illustrates the interior of a vehicle; and
[0044] Figure 3 Schematic diagram showing adjustments to displayed content. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0045] See also Figure 1 , an exemplary embodiment 100 of the method of the first aspect of the present invention comprises step S1: providing content to be displayed by a display device in a vehicle. The content may be provided by acquiring or receiving vehicle data (e.g., current speed, etc.), navigation data, driving assistance data, or other data (e.g., infotainment data) from a control unit (e.g., ECU) of the vehicle. Generally, the content has a standard view, i.e., a view that the driver should generally see. The standard view may be considered to be distortion-free, and the standard view provides suitable readability of the content.
[0046] In step S2, a condition related to the driving situation is determined. The condition related to the driving situation may simply be the driving direction of the vehicle. The driving direction may be determined by the steering wheel angle. While the driving direction of the vehicle may be an indication of the direction the driver is looking in, the driver's line of sight (gaze direction) may be determined by monitoring the movements made by the driver. For example, an in-cabin camera may be configured to detect movement of the driver's head. Similarly, movement of the driver's eyes may be detected by an in-cabin camera.
[0047] Based on the determined conditions relevant to the driving situation, a view adjustment function is determined in step S3. The view adjustment of the content includes in particular a position adjustment and a perspective adjustment. In other words, the view adjustment function is determined not only to take into account the position or a change in position of the content (i.e., where the content is displayed on the display device) but also to determine a perspective adjustment. A perspective adjustment (or perspective correction) can be determined to compensate for possible deformations that may be caused by a change in the position of the displayed content. It can be considered advantageous that the perspective adjustment results in a distortion-free view of the content for the driver, regardless of where the content is displayed.
[0048] An adjusted view of the content is then determined based on the current view (or possibly the standard view described above) (step S4). Finally, the content is displayed by the display device in the adjusted view (step S5). It may be desirable to limit the amount of adjustment, i.e., to make only minor adjustments to the view of the content. Small adjustments may be sufficient to achieve a comfortable effect for the driver, which can reduce the risk of motion sickness. Similarly, since the content will always appear in the driver's field of view without distortion, driving safety may also be improved.
[0049] exist Figure 2 An exemplary interior view of a vehicle 1 is shown in FIG. The interior may be equipped with various display devices, which may be controlled by the method 100 described above. For example, the adjustment of the display content may be applied to the display of an infotainment system 4 on a center console or to the display of a display 7 in a steering wheel. The method 100 may be particularly useful for a head-up display 10 which is configured to display content in the region of a windshield 3 of the vehicle 1, so that the content appears above the hood or in front of the vehicle on the road. The content may be the current speed of the vehicle, which is displayed in FIG. Figure 2 The number "40" is shown in the view 11, which appears in the center above the steering wheel and can be a standard view for a straight-ahead driving direction and a neutral and straight-ahead gaze of the driver. The driver's gaze direction can be determined by an in-cabin camera 5, which is installed, for example, in the area of a rearview mirror 13.
[0050] Figure 2Also shown in dashed lines is an adjusted view 12 of numeral "40", which may be a suitable view if the driver is looking to the right and / or the vehicle is turning right. Figure 2 It can be seen from the schematic diagram that compared with view 11, in view 12, not only the position of the number "40" has changed to the right, but view 12 also includes a perspective correction for the number "40", so that it does not appear to be deformed in the position of view 12. Figure 2 Also shown are an evaluation unit 8 for determining an adapted view of the content and a control unit 9 for controlling the display.
[0051] Reference now Figure 3 , schematically illustrating an adjustment of the view of the content displayed by the head-up display of the vehicle 1 , similar to the above for Figure 2 The example explained. Figure 3 The content of the example is the current speed shown by the display of the expression "40km / h". In the straight-line driving direction of the vehicle ( Figure 3 a), the content appears in the view 11 directly in front of the driver, when the vehicle 1 turns right ( Figure 3 b) The content is shifted to the right and displayed in an adjusted view 12. The corresponding view of the content is determined in such a way that the driver sees an undistorted view of the content.
[0052] Figure 3 1 shows a virtual curved surface 14, which can serve as a basis for determining suitable views, such as view 11 and adjusted view 12. The center of curvature can be considered to be the driver, or more specifically the driver's head. The radius of curvature of the curved surface can be selected so that the virtual curved surface 14 is located around the vehicle 1 (e.g. Figure 3 1 ), in particular outside the vehicle 1 at least in front of the vehicle 1. This makes it possible to easily determine the perspective adjustment and the position adjustment. The position adjustment of the displayed content can be achieved by moving the content along the virtual curved surface 14, which will automatically lead to the desired perspective adjustment. Similarly, the size of the displayed view of the content can be determined in such a way that the content appears to the driver to be the same size for each position in which it is displayed.
[0053] Although it can be assumed that the curved surface 14 is substantially spherical, the curvature of the surface can be changed, for example, changed to an ellipse, or the center of curvature can be changed. As described above, the virtual curved surface 14 can surround the vehicle with the driver at the center. This can be used to achieve further effects of view adjustment, for example, the size and shape of the virtual curved surface 14 can be adapted according to the driving situation. For example, when the vehicle accelerates, the surface 14 can extend in the driving direction so that the content appears to be farther away from the driver. Conversely, when the vehicle brakes, the curved surface 14 can be compressed in the driving direction so that the content appears to be closer to the driver. This effect can similarly be achieved by moving the center of curvature. This adjustment can take into account the natural changes in the driver's attention during the corresponding driving situation, and can therefore further improve the readability of the content and the overall user experience.
[0054] Although at least one exemplary embodiment of the present invention has been described above, it must be noted that there are a large number of variations. It should also be understood that the exemplary embodiments described herein are merely non-limiting examples of how the present invention may be implemented and are not intended to limit the scope, application, or configuration of the apparatus and methods described herein. Instead, the foregoing description will provide those skilled in the art with a configuration for implementing at least one exemplary embodiment of the present invention, wherein it must be understood that various changes may be made to the functionality and arrangement of elements of the exemplary embodiments without departing from the subject matter defined by the appended claims and their legal equivalents.
