Description

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 529,125, filed on July 26, 2023, entitled “No Spill Straw,” and U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 529,988, filed on July 31, 2023, entitled “No Spill Straw.” Technical Field

[0002] Aspects provided herein relate to portable beverage accessories, such as insulated travel mugs, shaker cups, and the like. Background Art

[0003] Travel beverage accessories typically include insulated and non-insulated cups, double-walled cups, or any other suitable beverage container that includes a fitted lid to prevent accidental spills. The lid may be a simple screw-on or push-on lid, and may not always be leak-proof. Presumably leak-proof lids typically include a mechanism that typically requires two hands to operate, and therefore may be cumbersome to use. Summary of the invention

[0004] At the height of the high level, the beverage container may include a cover structure that is coupled to a base structure to define an internal volume for maintaining and / or distributing a beverage that is maintained in the beverage container. The base structure may be a cup-shaped container that may be selectively insulated to maintain a beverage cold / hot for an extended period of time (e.g., between 4 and 48 hours). The cover structure may have a spout portion or a straw mechanism for distributing the contents of the beverage container when the cover structure and the base structure engage with each other. In order to provide a leakproof beverage container, the straw mechanism may be rotatably transformed between a closed state (i.e., non-distribution state, non-overflow state, travel state, or non-use state) and an open state (i.e., distribution state). When in its closed state, the straw mechanism prevents the contents of the beverage container from overflowing or otherwise distributing or consuming from the beverage container. When in its open state, the straw mechanism allows the contents of the drinkable beverage container to be consumed or otherwise distributing contents from the beverage container.

[0005] The lid structure according to aspects herein includes a straw mechanism and a main body portion. The main body portion has: a threaded engagement section, the threaded engagement section is configured to securely engage the base structure of the beverage container; and an engagement cavity, the engagement cavity is configured to receive and engage the straw mechanism, as will become more apparent in the description of the accompanying drawings provided below. The straw mechanism and the main body portion are detachably engaged with each other to facilitate cleaning of the lid structure. In addition, the straw mechanism and the main body portion are rotatably engaged to provide a leak-proof lid structure for travel or general portability. This is superior to conventional straw-based beverage containers, where the straw extends through a penetrable opening in the lid, or the straw itself is an open conduit to the contents of the container, both of which are potential leak areas.

[0006] Aspects herein are generally directed to a lid structure for a beverage container having a body portion including a straw connector configured to be detachably attached to a detachable straw. Among other things, the detachable straw facilitates thorough cleaning of the lid structure and also provides a neatly storable container that can fit all of its components within the interior volume defined by the base structure and the lid structure.

[0007] The straw mechanism of the cover structure includes a frame portion and a nozzle portion having a nozzle opening. In an embodiment, in a non-limiting example manner, the nozzle portion can be rigid and formed by a hard polymer, a plastic material, a metal or other rigid material. In another embodiment, in a non-limiting example manner, the nozzle portion can be flexible (i.e., bendable, stretchable, elastic, deformable) and formed by a suitable material (e.g., silicone or other rubber polymer material). The frame portion frames the nozzle portion so that the nozzle portion extends outward through the opening of the frame portion and the first surface of the frame portion. In addition, the first surface of the frame portion includes a first indicator protruding from the first surface. The nozzle base portion is wider than the nozzle portion and is seated on the second surface of the frame portion, thereby sealing the opening of the frame portion. The nozzle opening of the nozzle portion extends through the nozzle base portion. In some aspects, the shape of the nozzle portion is similar to a traditional straw having a cylindrical tubular structure, and the cylindrical tubular structure has a circular cross-section with a circular opening. In other aspects, by way of non-limiting example, the nozzle portion may have a tubular structure having any desired cross-sectional shape with an opening of a corresponding shape, such as a triangle, a star, a square, etc. In other aspects, by way of non-limiting example, regardless of the cross-sectional shape of the nozzle portion, the opening may always be a half shape (e.g., a semicircle, a half star, a half triangle, a half square, etc.). However, in a preferred embodiment, the nozzle base portion may always have an opening of a half shape. In other words, if the nozzle has a circular opening, the nozzle base portion may have a semicircular opening.

[0008] The second surface of the frame portion further includes a first annular magnet housing protruding from the second surface, the first annular magnet housing accommodating an annular magnet. In addition, the outer surface of the annular magnet housing forms a key having a first ridge and a second ridge each extending partially around the circumference of the magnet housing. The first ridge has a first length that is different from a second length of the second ridge. The edge of the second surface of the frame portion further includes a ridge aligned with the first indicator on the first surface of the frame portion and a notch positioned opposite the ridge.

[0009] The engaging cavity of the main body portion of the cover structure is configured to engage with the straw mechanism by receiving the magnet housing so that the first surface of the frame portion of the straw mechanism is flush with the outer surface of the cover structure when engaged to the cover structure. The main body portion of the cover structure forms a second annular magnet housing protruding from the inner surface of the main body portion, and the second annular magnet housing accommodates a second annular magnet having an opposite polarity to the first annular magnet, thereby generating a strong attraction between the frame portion of the straw mechanism and the main body portion of the cover structure. The engaging cavity includes a first lip and a second lip, and the first lip and the second lip form a keyhole in the main body portion so that the straw mechanism is always received by the main body portion in a predetermined configuration. In addition, the main body portion includes several stop tongues to lock the rotation of the straw mechanism along a 180° path. The second annular magnet is contained in the second annular magnet housing through the cover portion. The cover portion has a semicircular opening, and the semicircular opening is configured to align with the semicircular opening of the base portion of the nozzle. Such that when the semicircular opening of the nozzle base portion and the semicircular opening of the cover portion are aligned, there is flow from the nozzle portion, and when the semicircular opening of the cover portion and the semicircular opening of the nozzle portion are not aligned (i.e., on opposite sides), there is no flow from the nozzle portion.

[0010] Aspects herein are further generally directed to a beverage container, the beverage container consisting of a base structure and a lid structure having a magnetic straw mechanism. The base structure may consist of a double-walled plastic structure, a glass or polymer-based structure, or a thermally insulating structure consisting of stainless steel, aluminum, copper or any other suitable material or combination of materials suitable for insulating the contents of the beverage container from external temperature fluctuations for an extended period of time. The base structure according to aspects herein comprises an outer wall and an inner wall. The inner wall of the base structure comprises a threaded portion adjacent to the edge of the opening of the base structure. A step edge is provided in the inner wall of the base structure, the step edge defining the end point of the threaded portion of the inner wall and the beginning of the unthreaded portion, wherein the unthreaded portion of the inner wall extends further inwardly toward the relative center of the container than the internal threaded section of the base structure. Optionally, the inner wall may include a volumetric marking configured to signal the volume contained in the base structure when the base structure is filled with a beverage. The volume of the base structure may be sized and shaped to hold between a 14 oz. beverage and a 100 oz. beverage.

It should be appreciated that it is not necessary to describe all features of the components of the accompanying drawings. Some of these undiscussed features (e.g., various couplings, etc.) as well as the discussed features are inherent to the drawings themselves. Other undiscussed features may be inherent in the component geometry and / or configuration. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0030] The subject matter of the embodiments of the present invention is described in detail herein to meet statutory requirements. However, the description itself is not intended to limit the scope of this patent. On the contrary, the inventor(s) have anticipated that the claimed subject matter may also be embodied in other ways to include different features or combinations of features similar to those described in this document in conjunction with other current or future technologies. In addition, it should be understood that the drawings do not necessarily represent an all-inclusive representation of the embodiments herein and may have various components hidden to facilitate the written description thereof.

[0031] At a high level, it is disclosed Figure 1 The beverage system 100 shown in FIG. The beverage system 100 includes a cover structure 102 and a base structure 104 as main components. The beverage system may optionally further include a handle 106 to facilitate carrying the beverage system 100. Figure 1As further shown in FIG. 1 , the lid structure 102 can have a body portion 108, a straw mechanism 110, and the straw mechanism 110 has a spout portion 112 with a spout opening 118, through which a user can drink the fluid contained in the beverage system 100. The straw mechanism 110 further includes a frame portion 114. The spout portion 112 extends through an opening 116 of the frame portion 114, so that it extends through a first surface (outer surface) of the frame portion 114 and extends above the first surface (outer surface) of the frame portion 114. The frame portion can also include a first indicator 120, which guides the user to different positions or states of the straw mechanism 100, such as a dispensing state (such as Fig. 9 and Fig.10 ), locked state, or overflow prevention state (as shown in Fig.11 and Fig.12 ) and disassembled or cleaned state (as shown in Figure 7 and Figure 8 ).

[0032] The body portion 108 of the lid structure 102 may include a second indicator 122 that is complementary to the first indicator 120, and when aligned with each other, the first indicator 120 and the second indicator 122 indicate, for example, that the straw mechanism 110 is in its dispensing state. In addition, the body portion 108 includes a vent 124 for allowing proper air circulation within the beverage system 100 as the contents are drawn from the base structure 104 when the user drinks from the spout portion 112, thereby ensuring or maintaining proper flow of liquid through the spout opening 118 of the spout portion 112. As shown, the base structure 104 of the beverage system 100 may optionally include a handle 106 to facilitate transportation of the beverage system 100 by the user. In addition, as shown in FIG. Figure 2 As shown in , the beverage system 100 can further include a non-slip mat 200 on the base or bottom of the base structure 104 to help prevent the beverage system 100 from sliding across flat surfaces, such as counters, tables, and the like. Exemplary materials that can be used for the non-slip mat 200 can include, for example, natural rubber, synthetic rubber, rubberized silicone, thermoplastic polyurethane, polyurethane, neoprene, nitrile, and any other suitable material having the desired properties of the non-slip mat 200.

[0033] Figure 3A partially disassembled beverage system 100 is depicted. As shown, the body portion 108 and the straw mechanism 110 can be separated to facilitate cleaning of the components of the beverage system 100, and in particular, the lid structure 102. As shown, the body portion 108 includes a recess or engagement cavity 308 to accommodate the components of the straw mechanism 110 so that the outer surface of the frame portion 114 and the outer surface of the body portion 108 are flush with each other when assembled, as previously described. Figure 1 In addition, as shown, a straw 302 having a straw handle 314 is shown connected to the main body portion 108. Figure 4 , Figure 5A and Figure 5B As best seen in FIG. 1 , the straw mechanism 110 has a magnetic connection portion, wherein the second surface of the frame portion 114 has a first magnet housing 318 (eg, a first magnet housing 318 protruding from an inner surface or second surface thereof and accommodating a first magnet 802) Figure 8 ). The first magnet 802 may be annular so as to extend within and around the circumference of the first magnet housing 318, which may also be annular. Figure 4 As shown in FIG. 1 , the nozzle base portion 410 located within the cavity formed in the center of the first magnet housing 318 includes a semicircular opening 412. The second surface (i.e., the inner surface) of the frame portion 114 further includes a protrusion 402 aligned directly opposite the first indicator 120 on the first surface of the frame portion. Directly opposite the protrusion 402, the frame portion 114 includes a recess 400 on the second surface of the frame portion 114. As shown in FIG. FIG. 5A to FIG. 5C and Figures 9 to 12 As will become more apparent, when the straw mechanism 110 is in the dispensing state, the recess 400 is aligned with the vent seal 300, and when the straw mechanism 110 is in the sealing state, the protrusion 402 is aligned with the vent seal 300 to seal the vent 124 by substantially blocking the opening of the vent seal 300.

[0034] The volume of the base structure 104 can be sized and shaped to be maintained between 14 oz. of liquid beverage and 100 oz. of liquid beverage. The base structure 104 can be composed of a double-walled plastic structure, a glass or a structure based on a polymer material, or a thermally insulating structure composed of any other suitable material or material combination that is suitable for insulating the contents of the beverage container from external temperature fluctuations for an extended period of time. The base structure 104 includes an inner wall 330 and an outer wall 332. The inner diameter of the inner wall 330 is generally less than the outer diameter of the outer wall 332, thereby providing the base structure 104 with a thickness between the inner wall 330 and the outer wall 332. This thickness can help provide thermal insulation properties for the base structure 104 to prevent rapid cooling, rapid warming and / or moisture seepage when containing a cold or icy liquid beverage. In addition, to improve grip and / or grip comfort, the base structure 104 may optionally further include a handle 106, which may or may not be provided with an additional friction surface, which is coated or otherwise covered with rubber, such as, for example, natural rubber, synthetic rubber, rubberized silicone, thermoplastic polyurethane, polyurethane, neoprene, nitrile and any other suitable material having desired properties.

[0035] Also like Figure 4 As shown in , the frame portion 114 further includes a first ridge 404 and a second ridge 406, which protrude from the first magnet housing 318 to form a "key" portion of the straw mechanism 110, and the engagement cavity 308 forms a "lock" portion of the cover structure by having an opening defined by the first lip extension 304 and the second lip extension 306 or conversely the first lip recess 322 and the second lip recess 324. The first ridge 404 has a first length, and the second ridge 406 has a second length different from the first length. The first lip recess 322 also has a first length, and the second lip recess 324 also has a second length. In this way, the straw mechanism 110 can be assembled into the engagement cavity 308 in only one predetermined manner (i.e., the first ridge 404 passes through the first lip recess 322, and the second ridge 406 passes through the second lip recess 324), as will become more apparent from the remaining figures.

[0036] like Figure 3 , Figure 4 , Fig. 6A and Figure 6BAs further shown in , the vent seal 300 can be made of a flexible rubber or silicone material having an opening through which air can flow when unsealed. The first lip extension 304 and the second lip extension 306 are further equipped with stop tongues 320, respectively, which are configured to limit the rotation of the straw mechanism 110 relative to the main body portion 108 to 180° (i.e., a semicircular path). The main body portion 108 further includes threads 328 that secure the lid structure 102 to the base structure 104. The base structure includes threads 326 complementary to the threads 328 on an inner wall 330 thereof that defines an internal volume 316. As shown, the base structure 104 has an internal volume 316, and a beverage can be contained in the internal volume 316 in the base structure 104.

[0037] like Figure 8 , Fig.10 and Fig.12 As will become more apparent in the drawings, the main body portion 108 houses the second magnet 804 within the engagement cavity 308, which is secured and covered by the cover portion 310. The cover portion 310 includes a second semicircular opening 312, which works together with the semicircular opening 412 of the nozzle base portion 410 to form the straw mechanism 110. The straw mechanism 100 is capable of transitioning from a dispensing state and a closed state (sealed state). When the semicircular opening 312 and the semicircular opening 412 are aligned with each other, the straw mechanism 100 is in the dispensing state. On the other hand, the closed state is when the semicircular opening 412 and the semicircular opening 312 are not aligned with each other (directly opposite each other).

[0038] Figure 7 The beverage system 100 is shown in an unlocked state 700. When in the unlocked state 700, the first indicator 120 is located at a quarter turn of the straw mechanism 110 between the second indicator 122 and the vent 124, or in other words, at a 90° clockwise rotation point from the second indicator 122. Figure 8 As better shown in FIG. 1 , the first ridge 404 is aligned with the first lip notch 322, and the second ridge 406 is aligned with the second lip notch 324, so that the straw mechanism 110 can be pulled out of or separated from the main body 108 of the lid structure 102, as previously described in Figure 3 and Figure 4 By way of example, removing the straw mechanism 110 from the main body portion 108 facilitates access to the area of the lid structure 102 located below the straw mechanism 110 for cleaning. Figure 8As further shown in the cross-sectional view 800 shown in FIG, the first magnet housing 318 houses a first magnet 802 that aligns with a second magnet 804 housed within the engagement cavity 308 and secured in place by the cover portion 310 when the straw mechanism 110 is within the engagement cavity 308. The first magnet 802 and the second magnet 804 have opposite polarities so that they strongly attract each other and are magnetically retained even in this unlocked state 700 so that the user has better control over the components and the components will not become loose on their own. The user must make a pulling motion on the straw mechanism 110 to pull it away from the body portion 108.

[0039] As shown, in Figure 8 In the embodiment of the present invention, the first magnet 802 is fixed in the first magnet housing 318 by an elastic gasket 806. In addition, the cover portion 310 is sealed by an elastic seal 808 and an elastic seal 810, thereby effectively fixing the second magnet 804 in the main body portion 108. As shown, when the straw mechanism 110 is in the engagement cavity 308, the first magnet 802 and the second magnet 804 are aligned with each other. According to aspects herein, it is contemplated that the first magnet 802 and the second magnet 804 are each a one-piece annular magnet. According to other aspects, the first magnet 802 and the second magnet 804 can be open-loop, or in other words, arcuate, rather than annular. The first arcuate magnet can occupy at least 50% of the first magnet housing 318, and the second magnet 804 can also be arcuate to match the shape of the first magnet 802. Alternatively, the arcuate magnets can be smaller, each occupying, for example, less than 50% of the first magnet housing 318. In such an embodiment, there may be two or more arcuate magnets distributed at different locations within the first magnet housing 318, each occupying at least 10% of the first magnet housing 318. The arcuate magnet within the engagement cavity 308 can then be made to match the arcuate magnet within the first magnet housing 318. As further shown, when the straw 302 is connected to the main body portion 108, the straw fitting 1402 of the main body portion 108 is configured to fit within the straw opening 814, which is located within the straw connection port 1302. The straw connection portion 1302 defines a receptacle 1306, as will be described in Fig.13 When connected to each other, the straw 302 and the main body portion 108 are sealed by the resilient gasket 812.

[0040] Fig. 9The beverage system 100 is shown in a locked and dispensed state 900. When in the locked and dispensed state 900, the first indicator 120 is rotated counterclockwise from the removable state 700 as indicated by arrow 902 to align the first indicator 120 with the second indicator 122. In other words, the straw mechanism 110 is rotated counterclockwise a quarter turn from the unlocked state so that the first indicator 120 is positioned at a 0° rotation point from the second indicator 122. Fig.10 As better shown in the cross-sectional view 1000 in FIG. 1 , the first ridge 404 is aligned with the second lip extension 306, and the second ridge 406 is aligned with the first lip extension 304, so that the straw mechanism 110 is locked in the engagement cavity 308 and cannot be separated from the main body portion 108 of the lid structure 102. In the locked and dispensed state 900, a connected opening 1006 is formed, wherein the spout opening 118, the semicircular opening 412, the semicircular opening 312 and the straw opening 814 are all aligned with each other, thereby allowing the contents in the interior volume 316 to flow freely through the connected opening 1006. When the contents are emptied, air can be drawn in from the vent 124, which has a vent seal 300 with a vent opening 301. This prevents the formation of a vacuum in the interior volume 316, which would make it increasingly difficult for the contents to be drawn through the spout portion 112. As shown, the notch 400 of the frame portion 114 is aligned with the vent seal 300 so as not to impede air flow through the vent opening 301 .

[0041] Fig.11 The beverage system 100 is shown in a locked and non-dispensing state 1100. When in the locked and non-dispensing state 1100, the first indicator 120 is rotated clockwise from the removable state 700 as shown by arrow 1102 to place the first indicator 120 and the second indicator 122 on opposite sides from each other, or in other words, at a 180° rotation point from the second indicator 122. Fig.12 As better shown in the cross-sectional view 1200 of FIG. 1 , the first ridge 404 is aligned with the first lip extension 304, and the second ridge 406 is aligned with the second lip extension 306, so that the straw mechanism 110 is also locked within the engagement cavity 308 and, therefore, cannot be separated from the main body portion 108 of the lid structure 102. In the locked and non-dispensing state 1100, a disconnected opening 1202 is formed, wherein the semicircular opening 412 and the semicircular opening 312 are not aligned with each other (i.e., on opposite sides of each other), thereby blocking flow from the straw opening 814 into the spout opening 118. In addition, the protrusion 402 on the underside of the frame portion 114 is aligned with the vent seal 300, thereby blocking the vent opening 301 of the vent seal 300, resulting in a blocked opening 1204, thereby effectively forming a leak-proof configuration.

[0042] Fig.13 A straw assembly view 1300 is shown. As shown, the straw 302 has a straw handle 314 with a straw tongue 1308. The straw 302 can be made of any suitable material that is safe to use (e.g., stainless steel, glass, silicone, bisphenol A (BPA) plastic, and the like). The handle 314 can be molded onto the straw 302, or can be made as one piece with the straw 302, or can be assembled to the straw 302. The handle 314 can be made of the same material as the straw 302, or made of a different material from the straw 302. The handle 314 can be removable from the straw 302 or permanently attached to the straw 302. As shown, the main body portion 108 of the cover structure 102 has a straw connection port 1302 on the underside of the cover structure 102. The straw connection port 1302 can be positioned opposite to the engagement cavity 308 and define a receptacle 1306. The straw connection port 1302 has a vertical guide 1310 (parallel to the direction of the straw length), which transforms into a horizontal guide 1304 that is perpendicular or orthogonal to the vertical guide 1310. Fig.14 , where the body of the connection port 1302 is removed, the straw fitting 1402 within the receptacle 1306 is configured to fit within the straw opening 814. At the base of the straw fitting 1402 is a resilient gasket 812 to seal the fitting and the body portion 108 of the straw 302.

[0043] like Figure 15 to Figure 16 , depicting the steps for assembling the straw 302 to the lid structure 102. Fig.15 , the tongue 1308 slides upward in the vertical direction 1502 through the vertical guide 1310 of the straw connecting portion 1302. To facilitate this process, the straw handle 314 can be directly aligned with the tongue 1308. Once the straw is in the socket 1306, Fig.16 The straw 302 is shown to be able to be rotated in a clockwise direction 1602, thereby guiding the tongue 1308 through the horizontal guide 1304, thereby locking the straw to the main body portion 108. Again, this movement can be facilitated by applying a clockwise force on the straw handle 314.

[0044] In addition, although some exemplary embodiments of the embodiments described herein are shown in the drawings, these embodiments are not intended to be limiting. Instead, it should be understood that the various embodiments and aspects described herein can be implemented on any insulated container.
