AI Technical Summary
In wireless mobile broadband communication systems, it is difficult for the prior art to effectively select appropriate modulation and coding schemes (MCS) to cope with the influence of downlink channel resource block structure, transmission sources and other characteristics, resulting in inaccurate channel quality feedback.
By implementing an improved channel quality information feedback technology in a user equipment (UE) and a base station (eNB), the UE derives the channel quality indicator (CQI) index of the frequency band of the OFDMA wireless communication system based on the channel state information (CSI) reference resources of the shared wireless downlink channel, and transmits the corresponding electromagnetic signal on the uplink. The base station receives the CQI index and selects the appropriate MCS in combination with the structure of the PDSCH resource block and the cell-specific reference signal (CRS) overhead.
This technology improves the transmission efficiency and quality of downlink channels through precise channel quality feedback and appropriate MCS selection, reduces bit error rate, and optimizes resource utilization.

Technical Field
[0003] The disclosed embodiments generally relate to wireless mobile broadband communications. Background Art
[0004] In a wireless radio access network such as an Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN), channel quality feedback techniques may be implemented to enable an evolved node base station (eNB) to use an appropriate modulation and coding scheme (MCS) when sending messages to a user equipment (UE). According to some such techniques, UEs may periodically and / or aperiodically send channel quality indicator (CQI) indexes to their serving eNBs. Each CQI index may indicate that the UE expects to be suitable for use in the transmission of an intended message from the eNB to the UE during a particular subframe.
[0005] In some cases, each transmitted message may be sent as one or more resource elements (REs) within one or more resource blocks, and the MCS that is actually most appropriate for sending a particular message may depend on the structure of the resource blocks containing it. Since the actual structure of such resource blocks cannot be known to the UE until after they are received, the UE may define a channel state information (CSI) reference resource based on which CQI index is selected. Each CSI reference resource may include a common expected structure for a resource block, via which its associated UE may expect to receive an expected message during a particular subframe. Once the CSI reference resource for a given subframe is defined, the UE may select a CQI index for that subframe based on the CSI reference resource.
[0006] In certain wireless radio access networks, the use of certain features may affect the structure of resource blocks that carry messages to UEs. For example, when an enhanced physical downlink control channel (EPDCCH) is implemented within a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) of E-UTRAN, certain REs within a PDSCH resource block may be allocated to the EPDCCH. In another example, for any particular PDSCH resource block, the number of REs containing cell-specific reference signals (CRS) may depend on the number of CRS antenna ports configured to transmit the PDSCH resource block to the eNB. In order to enable appropriate MCS selection, it may be desirable to take such effects into account in conjunction with CQI index reporting and / or interpretation, either by incorporating them into the definition of CSI reference resources on the UE side or by compensating for them on the eNB side. Summary of the invention

[0023] Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference numerals are used throughout to refer to the same elements. In the following description, for the purpose of explanation, a large number of specific details are given to provide a thorough understanding thereof. However, it will be apparent that the new implementation can be practiced without these specific details. In other examples, well-known structures and devices are shown in block diagram form to facilitate their description. The purpose is to cover all modifications, equivalents, and substitutes consistent with the claimed subject matter.
[0024] Figure 1 An example of an operating environment 100 is shown that may be representative of various implementations. Figure 1As shown, the mobile device 102 communicates with the fixed device 104 via an uplink channel 106 and a downlink channel 108. In some 3GPP Rel-11 implementations, the mobile device 102 may include a user equipment (UE), the fixed device 104 may include an evolved node base station (eNB), the uplink channel 106 may include a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) or a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH), and the downlink channel 108 may include a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH). The implementations are not limited in this context.
[0025] To determine parameters such as a modulation and coding scheme used in data transmission to the user equipment 102 via the downlink channel 108, the fixed device 104 may send a reference signal 110 to the mobile device 102 via the downlink channel 108. The mobile device 102 may perform channel estimation for the downlink channel 108 based on the reference signal 110, select a channel quality index 112 based on the channel estimation, and send the channel quality index 112 to the fixed device 104 via the uplink channel 106. The fixed device 104 may then apply parameters defined by the channel quality index 112 to send a message 114 to the mobile device 102 via the downlink channel 108. In various 3GPP Rel-11 implementations, the reference signal 110 may include one or more resource elements (REs) within one or more resource blocks, and the channel quality index 112 may include a channel quality indicator (CQI) index. The implementations are not limited in this context.
[0026] In some embodiments, the mobile device 102 may define a general expected structure of reference resources including resource blocks, via which the mobile device 102 may receive the message 114. Based on the quality of the reference signal 110 received by the mobile device 102 via the downlink channel 108, the mobile device 102 may then select a channel quality index 112 that defines a transmission parameter estimated by the mobile device 102 to produce a specific level of quality of received data within the reference resource transmitted from the fixed device 104 to the mobile device 102. For example, the mobile device 102 may select a channel quality index 112 that indicates the most efficient modulation and coding scheme via which the mobile device 102 estimates that it can receive data within the reference resource via the downlink channel 108 with a transmission block error probability of no more than 10%. In various 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the reference resource may include a channel state information (CSI) reference resource. The embodiments are not limited in this context.
[0027] In some embodiments, the quality of data that the mobile device 102 may expect to receive within the reference resource may depend on the structure of the reference resource, and thus the selection of the channel quality index 112 may depend on the structure of the reference resource. For example, in various embodiments, the reception quality level estimated by the mobile device 102 may depend on how many REs in the reference resource are assumed to include data intended for the mobile device 102 and how many REs are assumed to include data associated with various types of overhead. In some embodiments, the mobile device 102 may therefore be configured to select the channel quality index 112 based in part on a number of resource elements (REs) in the reference resource that are assumed to contain data intended for the mobile device 102. In various embodiments, the selection of the channel quality index 112 may additionally or alternatively depend on one or more assumptions about the source of the transmission of the reference resource. For example, in some embodiments, the mobile device 102 may be configured to select the channel quality index 112 based in part on the assumption that the reference resource is transmitted from the same location as the location where the fixed device 104 transmits the reference signal 110, rather than from another location and / or fixed device. The embodiments are not limited in this context.
[0028] In various embodiments, the selected channel quality index 112 may not define transmission parameters suitable for transmission of the message 114 to the mobile device 102 if the structure of the resource blocks containing the message 114 and / or their transmission source differ significantly from the assumption associated with the reference resource. For example, if the message 114 includes a different number of REs containing data intended for the mobile device 102 than what was assumed with respect to the reference resource, the selected channel quality index 112 may not be suitable for transmission of the message 114. In another example, if it had been assumed that the reference resource was transmitted from the same location as the reference signal 110 but then the message 114 is contained in a resource block transmitted from a different location than the reference signal 110, the selected channel quality index 112 may not be suitable for transmission of the message 114. Embodiments are not limited to this example.
[0029] In some embodiments, the use of certain features can affect the structure, transmission source and / or other characteristics of the downlink channel resource blocks. For example, in various embodiments, a downlink control channel implemented within the downlink channel 108 can occupy REs within the resource blocks of the downlink channel 108. In another example, in some embodiments, certain downlink channel resource block REs can be allocated to one or more cell-specific reference signals (CRS) corresponding to one or more CRS antenna ports of the fixed device 104. In order to enable appropriate selection of transmission parameters such as the MCS for the message 114, it may be desirable to consider such effects in conjunction with the selection of the channel quality index 112 at the mobile device 102 and / or the interpretation of the channel quality index 112 at the fixed device 104.
[0030] Disclosed herein is an improved channel quality information feedback technique that can enable selection of appropriate transmission parameters by considering one or more features that affect the structure, transmission source, and / or other characteristics of downlink channel resource blocks. In various embodiments, such considerations can be performed on the mobile device side, where reference resources can be defined to take such features into account. In certain embodiments, such considerations can alternatively or additionally be performed on the fixed device side, where compensation for such features can be performed during transmission parameter selection. The embodiments are not limited in this context.
[0031] Figure 2 A block diagram of an apparatus 200 is shown, which may include various embodiments. Figure 1 More specifically, the apparatus 200 includes an example of a mobile device that can be configured to define reference resources, such as taking into account features that affect the structure of downlink channel resource blocks. It is worth noting that some or all of the memory unit 204 may be included on the same integrated circuit as the processor circuit 202, or alternatively, some or all of the memory unit 204 may be placed on an integrated circuit or other medium, such as a hard drive external to the integrated circuit of the processor circuit 202. Although in Figure 2 The memory unit 204 is included within the device 200, but in some embodiments, the memory unit 204 may be external to the device 200. The embodiments are not limited in this context.

For example, in some embodiments, the channel quality index 206 may include an index number corresponding to a modulation and coding scheme used by the fixed device 250. In various 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the channel quality index 206 may include a channel quality indicator (CQI) index. The embodiments are not limited in this context.
[0038] In some embodiments, the apparatus 200 and / or the system 240 may include a communication component 208. The communication component 208 may include logic, circuitry, and / or instructions for sending messages to and / or receiving messages from the fixed device 250. In various embodiments, the communication component 208 may be used to transmit and / or receive messages via the RF transceiver 244 and one or more RF antennas 257. In some embodiments, the communication component 208 may be used to generate and / or process messages in accordance with one or more wireless communication standards. For example, in various 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the communication component 208 may be used to generate and / or process messages in accordance with one or more 3GPP specifications. The embodiments are not limited in this context.
[0039] In various embodiments, the communication component 208 can be used to receive a reference signal 210 from a fixed device 250. In some 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the reference signal 210 may include a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) and a channel state information interference measurement (CSI-IM) resource. In various embodiments, the downlink channel 212 may include a shared channel. For example, in some 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the downlink channel 212 may include a PDSCH. The embodiments are not limited to this context.
[0040] In various embodiments, the apparatus 200 and / or the system 240 may include a determining component 214. The determining component 214 may include logic, circuitry, and / or instructions for determining a reception quality parameter 216 for the reference signal 210. In certain embodiments, the reception quality parameter 216 may include an estimated channel quality for the downlink channel 212. In various embodiments, the determining component 214 may be configured to determine the reception quality parameter 216 based on the power of various resource elements at which the reference signal 210 is received. In certain 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the reception quality parameter 216 may include a channel measurement for the CSI-RS and an interference measurement for the CSI-IM resource. The embodiments are not limited in this context.
[0041] In various embodiments, the determining component 214 may be used to define a reference resource 218 for the downlink channel 212. The reference resource 218 may include a generic expected structure of resource blocks via which the apparatus 200 and / or the system 240 may expect to receive messages via the downlink channel 212. In certain 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the reference resource 218 may include a CSI reference resource. In various embodiments, the determining component 214 may be used to define the reference resource 218 to include data REs 220 and overhead REs 222. The data REs 220 may include REs defined as being allocated to the reference resource 218 for use in conveying a message expected to be sent via the reference resource 218, while the overhead REs 222 may include REs allocated to be used in implementing various wireless network features. In certain embodiments, the number of data REs 220 in the reference resource 218 may depend on the number of overhead REs 222 in the reference resource 218. In various embodiments, determining component 214 can be used to define reference resources 218 by allocating all overhead REs 222 required by any configured wireless network characteristics, and then designating the remaining available REs in reference resources 218 as data REs 220. Embodiments are not limited in this context.
[0042] In some embodiments, the determining component 214 may be used to define the reference resource 218 to include one or more overhead REs 222 allocated to a downlink control channel implemented within the downlink channel 212. In various 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the downlink control channel may include an enhanced physical downlink control channel (EPDCCH). In some 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the apparatus 200 and / or the system 240 may include a UE configured with one or both of EPDCCH physical resource blocks (PRB) group 0 and EPDCCH-PRB group 1. In various 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the determining component 214 may be used to define the reference resource 218 to include one or more overhead REs 222 allocated to EPDCCH-PRB group 0. In some 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the determining component 214 may be used to define the reference resource 218 to include one or more overhead REs 222 allocated to EPDCCH-PRB group 1. In various 3GPP Rel-11 implementations, determining component 214 may be used to define reference resources 218 to include one or more overhead REs 222 allocated to EPDCCH-PRB group 0 and to also include one or more overhead REs 222 allocated to EPDCCH-PRB group 1. The implementations are not limited in this context.
[0043] It is worth noting that in some embodiments, rather than defining the reference resource 218 such as to take into account the implementation of a downlink control channel within the downlink channel 212, the determining component 214 can be used to define the reference resource 218 without taking into account whether the downlink control channel is implemented. In various such embodiments, the determining component 214 can be used to define the reference resource 218 such that no overhead RE 222 in the reference resource 218 is allocated to the downlink control channel. For example, in some 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the determining component 214 can be used to define the reference resource 218 such that the overhead RE 222 does not include REs that include EPDCCH overhead. In such embodiments, compensation for the use of the EPDCCH can be performed on the eNB side. The embodiments are not limited to this context.
[0044] In various embodiments, the determining component 214 can be used to define the reference resources 218 to include one or more overhead REs 222 containing cell-specific reference signal (CRS) overhead. In certain 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the determining component 214 can be used to define the reference resources 218 in conjunction with CSI processing for the apparatus 200 and / or the system 240, and the CSI processing can be configured with a PMI / RI report. In various 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the determining component 214 can be used to define the reference resources 218 to include a plurality of CRS overhead REs 222 corresponding to a plurality of CRS antenna ports configured to a serving cell of the apparatus 200 and / or the system 240. In certain 3GPP Rel-11 embodiments, the determining component 214 can be used to define the reference resources 218 to include a plurality of CRS overhead REs 222 corresponding to a plurality of CRS antenna ports associated with a PDSCH RE mapping and a quasi-position indicator (PQI) having a lowest index value. In various 3GPP Rel-11 implementations, for any given CSI process, determining component 214 can be used to define reference resources 218 to include multiple CRS overhead REs 222 corresponding to multiple CRS antenna ports associated with non-zero power (NZP) CSI-RS for that CSI process. The implementations are not limited in this context.
[0045] In some embodiments, the apparatus 200 and / or the system 240 may include a selection component 224. The selection component 224 may include logic, circuitry, and / or instructions for selecting a channel quality index 206 for transmission to the fixed device 250.
