Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to bedding for beds, and more particularly, to such bedding including a pillowcase and a quilt cover, each of which is configured to fit two pillows or quilts of different sizes, respectively, and methods of making and using the bedding. Background Art
[0002] Facilities such as hotels may regularly process large quantities of washable bedding, including pillowcases and quilt covers, every day. Significant time and energy may be consumed in managing these types of linens, especially with respect to their size. For example, pillowcases of different sizes (such as those for sub-king and king-sized pillows) may look similar when mixed together during the laundry process, and thus laundry workers may spend a lot of time separating and sorting pillowcases by size. In addition, even if pillowcases can be stored by size, housekeeping workers may also spend a lot of time verifying pillowcase sizes - both at a given storage location and during room-to-room housekeeping.
[0003] To help reduce the time of those who use or handle bedding (such as pillowcases and quilt covers), one solution is to add size indicators to them. Size indicators are usually added as part of the forming process. For example, an area of a pillowcase, such as a hem, can be sewn with a specific / different color thread instead of (e.g., as can be typically used) white thread sewn to identify a pillowcase of a specific size. Pillowcases of different sizes will have threads of different colors. As another example, the size indication can be achieved by including a yarn with a predetermined color as one of the warp or weft yarns during the weaving of a fabric (e.g., for a quilt cover), and the color is related to the expected size of the bedding made therefrom. The yarn is positioned so that it is visible in the formed bedding to indicate its size to those who subsequently handle the bedding. Although these options can speed up the sorting process and housekeeping process to a certain extent, bedding (e.g., pillowcases and quilt covers) must ultimately be identified and sorted according to size.
[0004] It would therefore be desirable to provide an improved bedding construction, such as for pillowcases and / or duvet covers, which could still help reduce the time of those workers who use or handle such bedding, particularly for those workers involved in separation and sorting. Summary of the invention
[0005] The present invention relates to bedding including a pillowcase and a quilt cover, each of which is configured to fit two pillows or quilts of different sizes, respectively. The bedding (such as a pillowcase) defines a single or double open end type structure, in which a first foldable flap and a second foldable flap on one end or both ends of the bedding are respectively configured to fold on their respective open ends and fold on each other to hold, for example, one of a pillow or quilt of a specified and different size therein. In this way, the pillowcase is capable of receiving and holding, for example, one of two pillows of different sizes (e.g., a queen and a king-sized pillow), thereby allowing the replacement of two SKUs with one SKU that fits two sizes of pillows. In addition, the bedding structure allows a finished appearance regardless of the size of the pillow accommodated, for example, by hiding / covering another unused foldable flap on the same end.
[0006] The double open end configuration further provides additional advantages such as allowing a housekeeper to load the pillowcase with a pillow faster and more efficiently than with a conventional single open end configuration. The double open end configuration allows one to reach into the pillowcase from the open end opposite where the pillow is inserted and then grab the pillow through the other opening and pull the pillow more easily compared to conventional pushing or stuffing of the pillow from only one open end.
[0007] When the pillow is properly seated therein, it provides a clean and attractive finished appearance.
[0008] In one embodiment, a bedding product is provided, the bedding product comprising: a generally rectangular shape having opposite edges extending in a parallel relationship; a closed end; and a first open end opposite the closed end; a first length defined by the distance between the edge of the closed end of the bedding product and the distal end of a first foldable flap, the first foldable flap being located on a first side of the bedding product and extending beyond a second foldable flap on an opposite shorter second side of the bedding product. The bedding product also comprises a second length, the second length being shorter than the first length and defined by the distance between the same edge of the closed end and the distal end of a second foldable flap, the second foldable flap being located on an opposite shorter second side of the bedding product, the first foldable flap and the second foldable flap being located on the opposite first and second sides of the bedding product, respectively, and being located around a first opening at the first open end, the first opening being opposite the closed end and leading to a cavity in which a pillow or quilt can be accommodated, each foldable flap overlapping a portion of each corresponding side by a desired length. The bedding defines a single open-end configuration in which a first foldable flap and a second foldable flap on one end of the bedding are configured to be independently folded over their respective first open ends and folded over each other to hold and conceal therein one of designated and different sized pillows or quilts depending on which foldable flap is folded over the other foldable flap. In one example, the bedding is a pillowcase that accommodates two different sized pillows. In another example, the bedding is a quilt cover that accommodates two different sized quilts.
[0009] In another embodiment, the bedding defines a double open end construction in which the closed end of the bedding is replaced by a second opening, the second opening defining a second open end opposite the first opening and the first open end, and wherein a third foldable flap is located on the second end of the bedding and is configured to fold over its respective second opening to hold and conceal one of a designated and different sized pillow or quilt therein together with the first foldable flap and the second foldable flap, and wherein the first length is defined by the distance between the distal end of the first foldable flap and the distal end of the third foldable flap, the first foldable flap being located on a first side of the bedding and extending beyond the second foldable flap on a second opposite side, the third foldable flap being located on a second side of the bedding, or wherein the second length is defined by the distance between the distal end of the second foldable flap and the distal end of the third foldable flap, both being located on the same side of the bedding.
[0010] In another embodiment, the bedding defines a double open end construction in which the closed end of the bedding is replaced by a second opening, the second opening defining a second open end opposite the first opening and the first open end, and wherein a third foldable flap and a fourth foldable flap are relatively located on the second end of the bedding and are configured to be independently folded on their respective second open ends and folded on each other to hold and conceal one of a specified and different sized pillow or quilt therein together with the first foldable flap and the second foldable flap, wherein the first length is defined by the distance between the distal end of the first foldable flap and the distal end of the third foldable flap, the first foldable flap is located on a first side of the bedding and extends beyond the second foldable flap on the second opposite side, the third foldable flap is located on the first side and extends beyond the fourth foldable flap on the second opposite side of the bedding, and wherein the second length is defined by the distance between the distal end of the second foldable flap and the distal end of the fourth foldable flap, both of which are located on the second side of the bedding.
[0011] In yet another embodiment, a method for manufacturing a bedding product is provided, the method comprising sewing a hem for each of a first foldable flap and a second foldable flap on opposite ends of a piece of fabric having a length and a width in a rectangular shape. Thereafter, the opposite ends of the fabric of the desired length (including each of the hems) are folded back onto the fabric along its length and across its width to form each of the first foldable flap and the second foldable flap. Thereafter, the length of the fabric is folded along its length and across its width so that the side with the first foldable flap can partially overlap and be adjacent to the side with the second foldable flap, wherein the side with the first foldable flap has a first length that generally corresponds to a first pillow or a first quilt, and the side with the second foldable flap has a second shorter length that generally corresponds to a second pillow or a second quilt of a different size. Then, stitching occurs along opposite edges of the fabric, the opposite edges including opposite edges of the closed end to secure the opposite sides of the fabric to form a bedding product, which includes a first open end having a first opening opposite to the closed end, and wherein the bedding product is located in an inside-out position. In another embodiment, the bedding is turned right side outward, wherein the bedding defines a single open end construction in which a first foldable flap and a second foldable flap on one end of the bedding are configured to be independently folded over their respective first open ends and over each other to hold and conceal one of a designated and different sized pillow or quilt therein depending on which foldable flap is folded over the other foldable flap.

[0034] refer to Figure 1A-Figure 3, a bedding article in the form of a pillowcase 10 according to one embodiment of the present invention is shown herein, the pillowcase defining a single open-end pillowcase configuration. The pillowcase 10 is generally rectangular in shape and has opposite edges 12a and 12b extending in parallel relationship, a closed end 14, and an open end 16 opposite the closed end 14. The pillowcase 10 includes an overall first length (L1) defined by the distance between the edge 20 of the closed end 14 of the pillowcase 10 and the distal end 22 of the first foldable flap 24, which is located on the first side 26a of the pillowcase 10 and extends beyond the second foldable flap 28 on the second opposite side 26b of the pillowcase. The pillowcase also includes a second shorter length (L2) defined by the distance between the same edge 20 of the closed end 14 and the distal end 30 of the second foldable flap 28, which is located on the shorter second side 26b of the pillowcase 10.
[0035] The first and second foldable flaps 24, 28 are located on opposite sides 26a, 26b of the pillowcase 10 and have openings 34 ( Figure 3 ) around the pillowcase 10, the opening 34 being opposite to the closed end 14. Each flap 24, 28 extends along the width (W) of the pillowcase 10 from one edge 12a to the other edge 12b and overlaps a portion of each corresponding side 26a, 26b by a desired length. The width (W) of the pillowcase is shown as being generally uniform along its length L1, L2. Each flap 24, 28 further includes an outer surface 36 and an outer surface 38, respectively, facing away from the pillowcase 10, and an inner surface 40 and an inner surface 42, respectively, facing the pillowcase 10 and positioned adjacent to the outer surface of its corresponding side 26a, 26b of the pillowcase 10. The opening 34 of the pillowcase 10 leads to a cavity 44 ( Figure 5 and Figure 7 ), a pillow can be placed / received in the cavity 44 and ultimately retained in the cavity 44 when folded by at least one of the first foldable flap 24 or the second foldable flap 28. Thus, the pillowcase configuration can allow for the accommodation of two pillows 48 of different sizes ( Figure 5 ) and pillow 50( Figure 7), the pillows 48 and 50 generally correspond to the first length (L1) and the second length (L2) and the width (W) of the pillowcase 10. Specifically, the first pillow size defined by the first pillow 48 may generally correspond to the width W and the first length L1, and the second pillow size defined by the second pillow 50 may generally correspond to the width W and the second length L2. In another example, the first pillow 48 and the second pillow 50 may have the same width, which is about the same size as or less than the width W of the pillowcase 10, wherein the first pillow 48 has a length that is greater than the second length L2 but is about or less than the first length L1, and the second pillow 50 is about or less than the second length L2. In one example, the first pillow 48 may be a king-sized pillow, and the second pillow 50 may be a queen-sized pillow.
[0036] Continue to refer Figure 1A-Figure 3 , the opposite edges 52a and 52b of the first foldable flap 24 are shown aligned with the edges 12a, 12b of the pillowcase 10, and can be sewn together along the length of the first foldable flap 24 by means and methods known in the art. The distal end 22 of the first foldable flap 24 is continuous with the terminal end 56 of the corresponding side 26a of the pillowcase 10, thereby generally defining a continuous hinge along the width W of the pillowcase 10, about which the foldable flap 24 can pivot / can be folded. The hem 58 can be sewn into the proximal end 60 of the first foldable flap 24 along its width by means and methods known in the art.
[0037] like Figure 4 and Figure 5 As best shown in , due to the construction of the first foldable flap 24, the flap 24 can be lifted and folded over the opening 34 and at least a portion of the second foldable flap 28 to thereby substantially close the open end 16 of the pillowcase 10 and retain a first sized pillow 48, which can be, for example, a king-sized pillow. More specifically, the first foldable flap 24 is lifted and folded along a hinge formed by the intersection of the distal end 22 of the first foldable flap 24 and the terminal end 56 of the corresponding side 26b of the pillowcase 10. In the closed position, the inner surface 40 of the first foldable flap 24 is now exposed and the outer surface 36 faces the pillowcase 10, covering a portion of the second foldable flap 28 to provide the final appearance of the pillowcase 10. This folding process can be reversed to expose the pillow 48 and allow it to be removed from the cavity 44. Although the second foldable flap 28 includes such Figure 2The proximal edge 64 is shown as being, for example, below the proximal edge 66 of the first foldable flap 24, but it should be understood that the reverse can occur. That is, the proximal edge 64 of the second foldable flap 28 can be positioned above the proximal edge 66 of the first foldable flap 24. This merely results in a change in the final appearance of the pillowcase 10 when the flaps 24, 28 are folded to hold pillows 48, 50 of their corresponding size.
[0038] Similarly, the opposite edges 70a and 70b of the second foldable flap 28 can be aligned with the edges 12a, 12b of the pillowcase 10 and can be sewn together along the length of the second foldable flap 28 by means and methods known in the art. The distal end 30 of the second foldable flap 28 is continuous with the terminal end 72 of the corresponding side 26b of the pillowcase 10, which is opposite to the terminal end of the first foldable flap 24, thereby generally defining a continuous hinge along the width W of the pillowcase 10, about which the foldable flap 28 can pivot / can be folded. The hem 74 can be sewn into the proximal end 78 of the second foldable flap 28 along its width by means and methods known in the art.
[0039] like Figure 6 and Figure 7 , due to the configuration of the second foldable flap 28, the flap 28 can be lifted and folded over the opening 34 and at least a portion of the first foldable flap 24 to thereby substantially close the open end 16 of the pillowcase 10 and retain a second size pillow 50, which can be a large size pillow. More specifically, the second foldable flap 28 is lifted and folded along the hinge formed by the intersection of the distal end 30 of the second foldable flap 28 and the terminal end 72 of the corresponding side 26b of the pillowcase. In the closed position, the inner surface 42 of the second foldable flap 28 is now exposed and the outer surface 38 faces the pillowcase 10, covering at least a portion of the first foldable flap 24 to provide a finished appearance. The pillowcase 10 of the extra length (including the portion of the first foldable flap 24 and its corresponding side 26b extending beyond the second foldable flap 28) is shown as being placed on the end of the pillow 50 and under the second foldable flap 28 and a portion of its corresponding side 26a, and is hidden from view while covering the opening 34 and helping the second foldable flap to keep the pillow 50 in the cavity 44. Here, the pillowcase 10 is configured to be able to hide the extra fabric for the king size option when used on a queen size pillow. It is contemplated that other folding configurations for the extra fabric can be utilized in addition to as shown here. This folding process can be reversed to expose the pillow 50 and allow it to be removed from the cavity 44.
[0040] Thus, the first and second foldable flaps 24, 28 are configured to fold generally over the opening 34 and over each other when a pillow 48, 50 of a particular size is received in the pillow cavity 44 and thereby hold a pillow of that particular size, such as a king-sized pillow or a queen-sized pillow, respectively.
[0041] See again Figure 1A-Figure 3 , the first foldable flap 24 and the second foldable flap 28 may include one or more colored yarns 82a and 82b to specify the different sizes of pillows 48, 50 that each flap 24, 28 can accommodate. For example, the hem 58 of the first foldable flap 24 can be sewn with a certain colored thread 82a (such as a blue thread) to identify the extra-large flap 24, and the hem 74 of the second foldable flap 28 can be sewn with another colored thread 82b (such as a red thread) to identify the extra-large flap 28, and the two colors are different from the primary color / primary color of the pillowcase 10 itself. In another example, the extra-large size can be specified by a blue thread, and the extra-large size can be specified by a green or white thread. The thread color can be on the outer surface 36, 38 of the flap 24, 28, on the inner surface 40, 42 of the flap 24, 28, or on both. As another example, the size indication can be achieved by including a yarn having a predetermined color as one of the warp or weft yarns during the weaving of the fabric of the pillowcase 10, wherein the color is associated with the expected size of the pillow. The yarn is positioned so that it is visible in the formed foldable flaps 24, 28 to indicate its size to those who subsequently handle the pillowcase 10. Generally, any color combination can be used as desired, including green, blue, white, yellow, red, orange, colorful, gold, purple, etc.
[0042] See now Figure 8A-Figure 10 , shows a pillowcase 100 according to another embodiment of the present invention, which defines a double open end pillowcase structure. Figure 1A-Figure 3, for example, the pillowcase 100 replaces the closed end 14 of the pillowcase 10 with a second opening 134b that defines a second open end 116b opposite the first opening 134a having the first open end 116a. Here, the pillowcase 100 is generally rectangular in shape and has opposite edges 112a and 112b extending in parallel relationship, a first open end 116a, and a second open end 116b opposite the first open end 116a. The pillowcase 100 includes an overall first length (L1) defined by the distance between the distal end 122 of the first foldable flap 124, which is located on the first side 126a of the pillowcase 100 and extends beyond the second foldable flap 128 on the second opposite side 126b of the pillowcase 100, and the distal end 122 of the third foldable flap 127, which is also located on the first side 126a of the pillowcase 100 and extends beyond the fourth foldable flap 129 on the second opposite side 126b of the pillowcase 100. The pillowcase also includes a second shorter length (L2) defined by the distance between the distal end 130 of the second foldable flap 128 and the distal end 130 of the fourth foldable flap 129, both of which are located on the second side 126b of the pillowcase 100.
[0043] The first foldable foldable flap 124 and the second foldable foldable flap 128 are located on the opposite sides 126a, 126b of the pillowcase and around the opening 134a at the first open end 116a opposite to the second open end 116b. Similarly, the third foldable foldable flap 127 and the fourth foldable foldable flap 129 are located on the opposite sides 126a, 126b of the pillowcase 100 and around the opening 134b at the second open end 116b. Each foldable flap 124, 127, 128, 129 extends from one edge 112a to the other edge 112b along the width (W) of the pillowcase 100 and overlaps a portion of each corresponding side 126a, 126b by a desired length. The width (W) of the pillowcase 100 is also substantially uniform along its length L1, L2. Each of the first and third flaps 124, 127 and the second and fourth flaps 128, 129 further includes an outer surface 136, 138, respectively, facing away from the pillowcase 100 and an inner surface 140, 142, respectively, facing the pillowcase 100 and positioned adjacent to the outer surface of its respective side 126a, 126b of the pillowcase 100. The openings 134a, 134b of the pillowcase 100 lead to the cavity 144 ( Fig.12 and Fig.14 ), the pillow can be placed / received in the cavity 144 and ultimately retained in the cavity 144 by at least one of the first flap 124 and the third flap 127 or the second flap 128 and the fourth foldable flap 129 when folded. Figure 1A-Figure 3 Similar to the pillowcase 10 of FIG. 1 , this pillowcase configuration allows for the accommodation of two different sized pillows 48 ( L1 ) and a second length ( L2 ) and a width ( W ) of the pillowcase 100 . Fig.12 ) and pillow 50( Fig.14 ).
[0044] Here, corresponding flaps 124 and 127 and 128 and 129 on the two open ends 116a, 116b of the pillowcase 100 cooperate to enclose and hold pillows of specific sizes. Specifically, the first pillow size defined by the first pillow 48 may generally correspond to the width W and the first length L1, and the second pillow size defined by the second pillow 50 may generally correspond to the width W and the second length L2. In another example, the first pillow 48 and the second pillow 50 may have the same width, which is approximately the same size as or less than the width W of the pillowcase, wherein the first pillow 48 has a length greater than the second length L2 but approximately or less than the first length L1, and the second pillow 50 is approximately or less than the second length L2. In one example, the first pillow 48 may be a king-sized pillow, and the second pillow 50 may be a queen-sized pillow. The double open end construction allows one to reach into the cavity 144 of the pillowcase 100 from either the first open end 116a or the second open end 116b opposite where the pillow 48, 50 is inserted, and then grasp the pillow 48, 50 through the other open end and pull the pillow 48, 50 more easily than conventionally pushing or stuffing the pillow 48, 50 from only one open end.
[0045] Continue to refer to Figure 8A-Figure 10 , the opposing edges 152a and 152b of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 are shown aligned with the edges 112a, 112b of the pillowcase 100, and can be sewn together along the length of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 by means and methods known in the art. The distal ends 122 of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 are continuous with the terminal ends 156 of the corresponding sides 126a of the pillowcase 100, thereby generally defining a continuous hinge along the width W of the pillowcase 100, about which the foldable flaps 124, 127 can pivot / fold. The hem 158 can be sewn into the proximal ends 160 of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 along their width by means and methods known in the art.
[0046] like Fig.11 and Fig.12As best shown in FIG. 1 , due to the configuration of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127, the flaps 124, 127 can be lifted and folded over their respective openings 116a, 116b and at least a portion of the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129, respectively, so as to thereby substantially close the first and second open ends 116a, 116b of the pillowcase 100 and retain a first size pillow 48, which can be, for example, a king-sized pillow. More specifically, the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 are lifted and folded along the hinge formed by the intersection of the distal ends 122 of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 and the terminal ends 156 of the respective sides 126a of the pillowcase. In the closed position, the inner surface 140 of the first foldable flap 124 and the third foldable flap 127 is now exposed and the outer surface 136 faces the pillowcase 100, covering at least a portion of the second foldable flap 128 and the fourth foldable flap 129 to provide a finished appearance to the pillowcase 100. Here, the second foldable flap 128 and the fourth foldable flap 129 are shown as hidden and not visible. For one or both of the first foldable flap 124 and the third foldable flap 127, this folding process can be reversed to expose the pillow 48 and allow it to be removed from the cavity 144. Although the second foldable flap 128 and the fourth foldable flap 129 include Fig. 9 The proximal edge 164 is shown as being above the proximal edge 166 of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127, but it should be understood that the opposite can occur. That is, the proximal edge 164 of the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 can be positioned below the proximal edge 166 of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127. This only results in a change in the final appearance of the pillowcase 100 when the flaps 124, 127, 128, 129 are folded to hold pillows 48, 50 of their corresponding sizes.
[0047] Similarly, the opposing edges 170a and 170b of the second foldable flap 128 and the fourth foldable flap 129 can be aligned with the edges 112a, 112b of the pillowcase 100 and can be sewn together along the length of the second foldable flap 128 and the fourth foldable flap 129 by means and methods known in the art. The distal ends 130 of the second foldable flap 124 and the fourth foldable flap 127 are continuous with the terminal ends 172 of the corresponding side 126b of the pillowcase 100, which are opposite to the terminal ends of the first foldable flap 124 and the third foldable flap 127, thereby generally defining a continuous hinge along the width W of the pillowcase 100, about which the foldable flaps 128, 129 can pivot / can be folded. The hems 174 may be sewn along their width into the proximal ends 178 of the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 by means and methods known in the art.
[0048] As in Fig.13 and Fig.14As best shown in FIG. 1 , due to the configuration of the second foldable flap 128 and the fourth foldable flap 129, the flaps can be lifted and folded over their respective openings 134a, 134b and at least a portion of the first foldable flap 124 and the third foldable flap 127, respectively, so as to thereby substantially close the first open end 116a and the second open end 116b of the pillowcase 100 and retain the second size pillow 50, which can be a large size pillow. More specifically, the second foldable flap 128 and the fourth foldable flap 129 are lifted and folded along the hinge formed by the intersection of the distal ends 130 of the second foldable flap 128 and the fourth foldable flap 129 and the terminal ends 172 of the corresponding sides 126b of the pillowcase. In the closed position, the inner surface 142 of the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 is now exposed and the outer surface 138 faces the pillowcase 100, covering at least a portion of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 to provide a finished appearance. Specifically, the extra length of the pillowcase 100 (including the portions of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 and their corresponding sides 126b extending beyond the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129) is shown placed over the corresponding ends of the pillow 50 and under a portion of the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 and their corresponding sides 126a, and is hidden from view while covering the opening 134 and helping the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 to retain the pillow 50 in the cavity 144. The first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 are shown partially hidden from view and partially visible to provide a layered appearance. Here, the pillowcase 100 is configured to hide the extra fabric for the king size option when used on a queen size pillow. It is contemplated that other folding configurations for the extra fabric may be utilized in addition to that shown here. This folding process may be reversed to expose the pillow 50 and allow it to be removed from the cavity 144.
[0049] Thus, the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 and the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 are configured to be folded generally over their corresponding openings 134a, 134b and over each other when pillows 48, 50 of a specific size are received in the pillow cavity 144, and thereby hold pillows of a specific size, such as a king-size pillow or a queen-size pillow, respectively.
[0050] As mentioned above about Figure 1A-Figure 3 As discussed, Figure 8A-Figure 10The foldable flaps 124, 127, 128, 129 can include one or more colored yarns 182a and 182b to specify the different sizes of pillows 48, 50 that the flaps 124, 127, 128, 129 can accommodate. For example, the hem 158 of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 that work together can be sewn with a specific colored thread 182a (such as a blue thread) to identify the extra-large flaps 124, 127, and the hem 174 of the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 that also work together can be sewn with another colored thread 182b (such as a red thread) to identify the large flaps 128, 129, where the two colors are, for example, different from the primary / primary color of the pillowcase 100 itself. In another example, the large size can be specified by a blue thread, while the extra-large size can be specified by a green or white thread. The thread color may be located on the outer surface 136, 138 of the flaps 124, 127, 128, 129, the inner surface 140, 142 of the flaps 124, 127, 128, 129, or both. As another example, the size indication may be achieved by including a yarn having a predetermined color as one of the warp or weft yarns during the weaving of the fabric of the pillowcase 100, wherein the color is associated with the expected size of the pillow. The yarn is positioned so that it will be visible in the formed foldable flaps 124, 127, 128, 129 to indicate its size to those who subsequently operate the pillowcase 100. Generally, any color combination may be used as desired, including green, blue, white, yellow, red, orange, colorful, gold, purple, etc.
[0051] Now refer to Fig.15 and Fig.16 , shows a pillowcase 200 according to another embodiment of the present invention, the pillowcase 200 is FIG. 8 and Fig. 9100. With pillowcase 200, the double open end construction has been modified to include only three of the four foldable flaps, i.e., only the first foldable flap 124, the second foldable flap 128, and the fourth foldable flap 129. That is, one side 126a of pillowcase 200 has had its foldable flap 127 removed therefrom at the open end 116b opposite the first foldable flap 124, and includes a hem 201 sewn along its width at its end by means and methods known in the art. It should be understood that the first foldable flap 124 can be similarly removed, but not the third foldable flap 127. As shown, the fourth foldable flap 129 is located around the second opening 134b at the second open end 116b of the second opening 134b. And the terminal end 156 of the opposite side 126a of the pillowcase 200 without the third foldable flap 127 is generally aligned with the distal end 130 of the fourth foldable flap 129. Although shown as generally aligned, the terminal end 156 can be configured to be shorter than or extend beyond the distal end 130 of the fourth foldable flap 129, thereby the length of the opposite side 126a of the pillowcase 200 can be slightly longer or shorter. With this pillowcase 200, the fourth foldable flap 129 can be folded over to close or cover the second open end 116b after the pillow (such as pillows 48, 50) has been inserted or received into the cavity 144, as discussed above.
[0052] The overall first length (L1) is defined herein by the distance between the distal end 122 of the first foldable flap 124, which is located on the first side 126a of the pillowcase 200 and extends beyond the second foldable flap 128 on the second, opposite side 126b of the pillowcase 200, and the distal end 130 of the fourth foldable flap, which is located on the second side 126b of the pillowcase 200 and is generally aligned with the terminal end 156 of the first side 126a of the pillowcase 200. Although shown on the second side 126b of the pillowcase 200, it should be understood that the fourth foldable flap 129 can be located on either side 126a, 126b of the pillowcase 200 as desired. The pillowcase 200 also includes a second shorter length (L2) defined by the distance between the distal end 130 of the second foldable flap 128 and the distal end 130 of the fourth foldable flap 129, both of which are located on the same side 126b of the pillowcase 200.
[0053] As discussed above with respect to pillowcase 100, for example, openings 134a, 134b of pillowcase 200 lead to cavity 144 in which pillows 48, 50 may be placed / received and ultimately retained in cavity 144 by at least one of first and fourth foldable flaps 124, 129 or second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 when folded. Fig. 8A , Figure 8B and Fig. 9 Similar to the pillowcase 100 of FIG. 1 , this pillowcase configuration allows for the reception of two pillowcases 48, 50 of different sizes, which generally correspond to the first length (L1), second length (L2), and width (W) of the pillowcase 200 discussed in detail above. Notably, the double open-end configuration allows a person to reach into the pillowcase 200 from the first open end 116a or the second open end 116b opposite where the pillow 48, 50 is inserted, and then grab the pillow 48, 50 through the other open end and pull the pillow 48, 50 more easily, compared to the conventional method of pushing or stuffing the pillow 48, 50 from only one open end.
[0054] Now refer to Fig.17 and Fig.18 , shows a pillowcase 300 according to another embodiment of the present invention, the pillowcase is Fig. 8A , Figure 8B and Fig. 9 The pillowcase 300 is a variation of a double open-ended pillowcase. With this pillowcase 300, the distal end 122 of the third foldable flap 127 and the distal end 130 of the fourth foldable flap 129 are generally aligned. As such, the overall first length (L1) is defined herein by the distance between the distal end 122 of the first foldable flap 124 and the distal ends 122, 130 of either the third foldable flap 127 or the fourth foldable flap 129, the first foldable flap 124 being located on the first side 126a of the pillowcase 300 and extending beyond the second foldable flap 128 on the second, opposite side 126b of the pillowcase 300. The pillowcase 300 also includes a second, shorter length (L2) defined by the distance between the distal end 130 of the second foldable flap 128 and the distal ends 122, 130 of either the third foldable flap 127 or the fourth foldable flap 129. With this configuration, either the third flap 127 or the fourth flap 129 can be folded over to close the second end portion 116b.
[0055] As discussed above, the pillowcase 10, 100, 200, 300 can be configured to accommodate both the king-size pillow 48 and the queen-size pillow 50. In another example, the size of the pillowcase 10, 100, 200, 300 can accommodate both a standard-size pillow and a queen-size pillow. Also, the pillowcase 10, 100, 200, 300 can be configured to accommodate, for example, a standard-size pillow and a king-size pillow. And other variations / pillow sizes can be imagined by those skilled in the art. In one example, the width W of the pillowcase 10, 100, 200, 300 can be about 20 inches, which generally accommodates the standard width of standard, queen-size, and king-size pillows, and the first length L1 can be about 36 inches, and the second length L2 can be about 30 inches, which generally accommodates the standard length of king-size and queen-size pillows, respectively. In another example, the width W of the pillowcase can be about 20 inches, and the first length L1 can be about 30 inches and the second length L2 can be about 26 inches, which generally accommodate the standard lengths of queen-sized and standard-sized pillows, respectively. In another example, for example, as desired / needed, the width and / or length can be larger in size, for example, including a width from 20.0 inches to 22.0 inches, and including a corresponding length from 26.0 inches to 28.0 inches, from 30.0 inches to 32.0 inches, and from 36.0 inches to 38.0 inches. Of course, it should be understood that any values of width and length can be used as desired / needed.
[0056] About the hem 58,74,158,174 for each flap 24,28,124,127,128,129, the length of these hems can be varied as desired. In one example, the hem 58,74,158,174 can be about 1,2,3,4 or 5 inches long.In another example, the hem length of each flap 24,28,124,127,128,129 can be the same or different. In another example, the hem length can be longer than 5 inches or less than 1 inch as desired.Alternately, means and methods known in the art can be used to add a strap to one or more flaps to replace traditional hems. And, as required, decorative sewing, piping, embroidery or its combination etc. can be used on one or more flaps and / or incorporated into pillowcases 10,100,200,300.
[0057] Pillowcases 10, 100, 200, 300 can be constructed of various materials, such as conventional materials typically used for pillowcase construction. The fabric construction can be woven, nonwoven, or knitted, or a combination thereof. In one example, the fabric construction is a woven plain weave. In another example, the braid is a jacquard braid. As needed, the fabric material can include natural and / or synthetic fibers. In one example, the fabric can include polyester, cotton, nylon, acetate, tencel (lyocell), viscose (rayon), polypropylene, spandex, blends thereof, or combinations thereof. In another example, the fabric includes polyester and / or cotton. As desired, for example, different types of fabrics can be used on different sides 26a, 26b, 126a, 126b and / or flaps 24, 28, 124, 127, 128, 129 of pillowcases 10, 100, 200, 300 to form different fabrics for flaps 24, 28, 124, 127, 128, 129. Moreover, different weaves can be used on different sides 26a, 26b, 126a, 126b. In another example, flaps 24, 28, 124, 127, 128, 129 themselves can have different fabrics 26a, 26b, 126a, 126b. For example, the fabric can be printed, striped, or patterned. The fabric of pillowcases 10, 100, 200, 300 can be substantially any desired color. In one example, the fabric color is white. In another example, the pillowcase 10, 100, 200, 300 may include or define a composite fabric in which at least one layer (such as an additional layer) is constructed by lamination. For example, the pillowcase 10, 100, 200, 300 may be or include a laminated film.
[0058] The pillowcase 10, 100, 200, 300, such as the fabric thereof, can include one or more finishes, such as chemical finishes, to provide one or more desired properties. The finishes can be applied by means and methods known in the art. Such finishes can include and / or provide softening, stain release, repellency, odor / fragrance, antimicrobial, skin care (e.g., hyaluronic acid), flame retardancy, etc.
[0059] Although the pillowcases 10, 100, 200, 300 are constructed so as not to require any fasteners to hold the pillows 48, 50 in their cavities 54, 154, it is contemplated that one or more fasteners (not shown) may be utilized as desired. For example, one or more fasteners may be installed to hold one or more flaps 24, 28, 124, 127, 128, 129 in place at their respective openings 34, 134a, 134b. These fasteners may be, for example, buttons, Velcro (hook and loop), snaps, magnets, buckles, ties, etc.
[0060] While the pillowcase construction is shown as being generally rectangular in shape, different shapes (and sizes) of pillowcases are contemplated, such as, for example, square.
[0061] Now, with regard to the manufacture of the pillowcase 10 and when it comes to Figure 1A , Figure 1B and Figure 2 The single open end pillowcase structure, for example, the pillowcase 10 can be made of Figures 19 to 22 A continuous piece of fabric 400 is made / cut as shown in and described below. In one example, Fig.19 and Fig. 20 As best shown, the initial continuous piece of fabric may be 21 x 95 inches (width (W) and length (L)), however, it should be understood that the initial dimensions (W and / or L) may vary as desired / needed. To form a pillowcase 10 for accommodating both king size 48 and queen size pillows 50, one may begin by sewing the hems 58, 74 of each of the first foldable flap 24 and the second foldable flap 28 ( Fig.21 ). Here, the hems 58, 74 are formed and located on the opposite ends 402 of the fabric 400 and are formed by means and methods known in the art. Specifically, for example, the oversized or first foldable flap 24 and the large or second foldable flap 28 can be sewn with a 4-inch hem with a 1 / 2-inch bend underneath.
[0062] Further references Fig. 20 and Fig.21 , the lines 82a, 82b for the hems can be color coded to match the first and second foldable flaps 24, 28 to their corresponding pillow sizes 48, 50. For example, the hems 58 of the first foldable flap 24 can be color coded using a green line (such as Canton Green) that will be visible on the outer surface 36 of the first foldable flap 24 for the king-size pillow 48, and the hems 74 of the second foldable flap 28 can be color coded using a blue line (such as Copper) that will be visible on the outer surface 38 of the second foldable flap 28 for the large-size pillow 50. Conversely, a substantially white line can be used on the hems 58, 74 of the first and second foldable flaps 24, 28 to be visible on the inner surfaces 40, 42 of the first and second foldable flaps 24, 28 so that the color of the line is not readily visible when the flaps 24, 28 are folded over the opening and used to cover the opening to hold the corresponding pillows 48, 50 in use.
[0063] Next, if Fig. 20 and Fig.21, opposite ends 402, 404 of a desired length of fabric 400 (including each of the hems 58, 74) may be folded back onto the fabric 400 along its length L and across its width W to form each of the first and second foldable flaps 24, 28 having visible colored lines 82a, 82b. In one example, one end 402 is folded over to provide the first foldable flap 24, which may be 12 inches in length including the hem 58, and the other end 404 is folded over to provide the second foldable flap 28, which may be 8 inches in length including the hem 74. It should be understood that the lengths of the first and second foldable flaps 24, 28 may be shorter or longer as desired / needed, specifically depending on the initial dimensions of the fabric 400. In one example, the first foldable flap 24 may be from 10 inches to 14 inches, and the second foldable flap 28 may be from 6 inches to 10 inches.
[0064] like Fig.21 and Fig. 22 As shown, the length of fabric 400 can be folded along its length L and across its width W so that the side 26a having the visible colored line 82a of the first foldable flap 24 can partially overlap and be positioned adjacent to the side 26b having the second foldable flap 28. The side 26a having the first foldable flap 24 has a first length L1 of approximately 36 inches to correspond to the length of the king-sized pillow 48, and the side 26b having the second foldable flap 28 has a second length L2 of approximately 30 inches to correspond to the length of the queen-sized pillow 50. Next, as Fig. 22 As best shown, the edges 12a, 12b of the pillowcase (including those of the closed end 14) are sewn along them by means and methods known in the art to secure the sides 26a, 26b of the pillowcase 10 thereto. In one example, the edges 2a, 12b (including those of the closed end 14) are overlocked, as is known in the art, and bar ties (e.g., 4 bar ties) are provided adjacent the opening 34 by known means and methods. At this point, the pillowcase 10 is formed, but in an inside-out position. Figure 1A and Figure 1B The pillowcase 10 is shown with the right side facing outward, wherein Figure 1A The side 26b of the pillowcase 10 having the second foldable flap 26 is shown, and Figure 1B Side 26a of pillowcase 10 having first foldable flap 24 is shown.
[0065] Although shown as being manufactured from a single continuous piece of fabric, it should be understood that the pillowcase 10 having a single open end configuration may be constructed from two or more pieces of fabric, as desired.
[0066] Now, referring to the manufacture of pillowcase 100, and as it relates to FIG. 8 and Fig. 9 When constructing a double open-end pillowcase, for example, the pillowcase 100 can be made / cut from two continuous and separate pieces of fabric 500a and 500b, which are assembled and sewn together, such as Figure 23 to Figure 26 In one example, as shown in Fig.23 and Fig.24 As best shown in FIG. 1 , the dimensions of the first piece of fabric 500a are approximately 21×65 inches (width (W)×length (L)) and the dimensions of the second piece of fabric 500b are approximately 21×51 inches (width (W)×length (L)), however, it should be understood that the initial dimensions (W and / or L) of the first piece of fabric 500a and the second piece of fabric 500b can be changed as desired / needed. In order to form a pillowcase 100 for accommodating both king-size and queen-size pillows 48, 50, one can begin by sewing the hems 158, 174 in the first fabric 500a and the second fabric 500b of each of the first foldable flap 124, the second foldable flap 127, the third foldable flap 128, and the fourth foldable flap 129 ( Fig.25 ). Here, the hems are formed and located on the opposite ends 502, 504 of the fabrics 500a, 500b and are formed by means and methods known in the art. Specifically, for example, the first foldable flap 124 and the third foldable flap 127 (extra large size flaps) and the second foldable flap 128 and the fourth foldable flap 129 (large size flaps) can be sewn with a 4-inch hem, with a 1 / 2 inch bend underneath.
[0067] Further references Fig.24 and Fig.25, the lines 182a, 182b for the hems 158, 174 can be color-coded to match the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 and the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 to their corresponding pillow sizes 40, 50. For example, the hems 158 of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 can be color-coded using a green line (such as Canton Green), which will be visible on the outer surface 136 of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 for the king-size pillow 48, and the hems 174 of the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 can be color-coded using a blue line (such as Copper), which will be visible on the outer surface 138 of the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 for the king-size pillow 50. In contrast, a basic white line may be used on the fold edges 158, 174 of the first, second, third, and fourth foldable flaps 124, 127, 128, and 129 so as to be visible on the inner surfaces 140, 142 thereof so that the color of the lines 182a, 182b is not readily visible when the flaps 124, 127, 128, 129 are folded over the opening and used to cover the opening to hold a pillow during use.
[0068] Next, if Fig.24 and Fig.25 As best shown in FIG. 1 , the opposite ends 502, 504 of each of the first and second fabrics 500a, 500b of a desired length (including each of the folded edges 158, 174) can be folded back onto the fabrics 500a, 500b, respectively, along their length L and across their width W to form each of the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 on the first fabric 500a and the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 on the second fabric 500b, wherein the colored lines 182a, 182b are visible on the first and second fabrics 500a, 500b. It should be understood here that the foldable flaps 124, 127, 128, 129 of each of the first and second fabrics 500a, 500b are visible on the first and second fabrics 500a, 500b. Fig.25In one example, each end 502, 504 of the first fabric 500a can be folded over to provide a first foldable flap 124 and a third foldable flap 127, and the length of the first foldable flap 124 and the third foldable flap 127 including the folded edge can be 12 inches, and the ends 502, 504 of the second fabric 500b can be folded over to provide a second foldable flap 128 and a fourth foldable flap 129, and the length of the second foldable flap 128 and the fourth foldable flap 129 including the folded edge 158 can be 8 inches. It should be understood that the length of the foldable flaps 124, 127, 128, 129 can be shorter or longer as desired / needed, specifically depending on the initial size of the first fabric 500a and the second fabric 500b. In one example, the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 may be from 10 inches to 14 inches, and the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 may be from 6 inches to 10 inches.
[0069] like Fig.25 , the first fabric 500a and the second fabric 500b are placed against each other with the first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 and their colored lines 182a generally facing the second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 and their colored lines 182b. In one example, the length of the longer first fabric 500a with its first and third foldable flaps 124, 127 can be about 36 inches, thereby defining a first length L1 of the pillowcase 100 and corresponding to the length of the king-sized pillow 48, and the length of the shorter second fabric 500b with its second and fourth foldable flaps 128, 129 can be about 30 inches, thereby defining a second length L2 and corresponding to the length of the queen-sized pillow 50. Here, the second fabric 500b is shown laid on top of the longer first fabric 500a. More specifically, the second fabric 500b is centered on top of the first fabric 500b such that approximately 3 inches of the first fabric 500a extend beyond each of the ends 502, 504 of the second fabric 500b.
[0070] Next, if Fig.26 As shown, the edges 112a, 112b of each of the first fabric 500a and the second fabric 500b can be sewn along them by means and methods known in the art to secure the multiple sides of the pillowcase 100 thereto. In one example, the edges 112a, 112b are overlocked, as known in the art, and bar ties (e.g., 8 bar ties, 4 bar ties on each side of the pillowcase) are provided adjacent to the openings 134a, 134b by known means and methods. At this point, the pillowcase 100 is formed, but in an inside-out position. Fig. 8A and Figure 8BThe pillowcase 100 is shown right side out.
[0071] Although shown as being manufactured from two separate and continuous pieces of fabric 500a, 500b, it should be understood that the pillowcase 100 having a double open end configuration can be constructed from three or more pieces of fabric or from a continuous single piece of fabric (as explained below) as desired. In addition, it should be understood that the same / similar techniques can be used herein to manufacture pillowcases 200, 300, which are variations of pillowcase 100.
[0072] In a variation of the manufacture of pillowcase 100, and as it relates to FIGS. 8 and Fig. 9 When constructing a double open end pillowcase, for example, it should be understood that the pillowcase 100 can be made / cut from a continuous single piece of fabric.
