[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0002] This application claims priority to and the benefit of Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0120507, filed on September 11, 2023, in the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein in its entirety by reference.
[0003] The disclosure relates to a battery pack and a device including the same, and more particularly, to a battery pack that enables easy separation of battery cells and a device including the same. BACKGROUND
[0004] In modern society, the use of mobile devices such as mobile phones, notebook computers, camcorders, and digital cameras has become widespread, which has accelerated the development of technology in the field related to mobile devices. In addition, as a measure to address air pollution caused by existing gasoline vehicles using fossil fuels, rechargeable secondary batteries are used as power sources for electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (P-HEVs), and the like. Therefore, the necessity of developing secondary batteries is increasing.
[0005] Currently, commercially available batteries include nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-hydrogen batteries, nickel-zinc batteries, and lithium batteries. Among these batteries, lithium batteries are becoming the most popular because they do not have a memory effect compared to nickel-based batteries, thus can be freely recharged, have a low self-discharge rate, and have a high energy density.
[0006] In general, a lithium secondary battery uses a lithium-based oxide and a carbon material as a positive active material and a negative active material, respectively. The lithium secondary battery includes an electrode assembly manufactured by disposing a separator between a positive electrode plate and a negative electrode plate coated with a positive active material and a negative active material, respectively, and a battery case that airtightly accommodates the electrode assembly together with an electrolyte.
[0007] In general, the lithium secondary battery can be classified into a can-type secondary battery manufactured by installing an electrode assembly in a metal can and a pouch-type secondary battery manufactured by installing an electrode assembly in a soft pack made of an aluminum laminate sheet, according to the external shape of the battery case.
[0008] In the case of a secondary battery for a small device, two or more battery cells are disposed, and in the case of a secondary battery for a medium device and a large device such as a car, a battery module including a plurality of battery cells electrically connected to each other is used. In the battery module, a plurality of battery cells are connected in series or in parallel to form a battery cell stack, which increases capacity and power. One or more battery modules can be configured into a battery pack by being installed together with various control and protection systems such as a battery disconnect unit (BDU), a battery management system (BMS), and a cooling system.
[0009] When a battery pack is configured, generally, battery cells are first accommodated in a module frame to prepare a battery module, and then other components are added to the battery module to configure a battery pack. In the case of a conventional battery pack, it is manufactured by disposing a battery module in a housing structure such as a battery pack frame, and such a battery pack is installed on a vehicle or the like.
[0010] However, recently, a battery pack having a structure in which a module frame structure is omitted and a plurality of battery cells are directly installed to a battery pack frame with the battery cells located between side plates has been developed.
[0011] Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view showing a cross-section of a conventional battery pack.
[0012] Referring to Figure 1 Conventionally, a plurality of battery cells 11 are laminated to form a battery cell stack 12, and a side plate 20 is provided on each side of the battery cell stack 12 in a direction in which the battery cells 11 are laminated. The side plates 20 can be connected by a connecting member 30.
[0013] The battery cell stack 12 can be directly installed to a bottom 1100F of a battery pack frame 1100, and a thermal resin layer 50 formed by coating a thermal resin can be located between the battery cell stack 12 and the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100. Specifically, the thermal resin can be coated onto the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100 to form the thermal resin layer 50, and the battery cell stack 12 can be disposed on the thermal resin layer 50.
[0014] The thermal resin can include a thermally conductive adhesive material, and specifically, it can include at least one of a silicone material, a polyurethane material, or an acrylic material. The thermal resin layer 50 has excellent thermal conductivity, and can quickly discharge heat generated by the battery cells 11 to the outside. In addition, the thermal resin layer 50 can be liquid during coating, but can be cured after coating, thereby fixing a plurality of battery cells 11 constituting the battery cell stack 12.
[0015] However, in the case of a conventional battery pack, there is a problem in that the engagement reliability of the battery cell 11 with the battery pack frame 1100 is not constant at the time of impact or vibration. In addition, when a problem occurs in the battery cell 11 and replacement is required, since the battery cell 11 is adhered to the thermal resin layer 50, it is difficult to replace the battery cell 11. In particular, if the battery cell 11 is forcibly replaced, the battery cell 11 can be damaged due to the adhesion force of the thermal resin layer 50.
[0016] Therefore, there is a need to develop a technology of a battery pack that improves the engagement reliability of a battery cell and can easily replace the battery cell when necessary. SUMMARY

[0048] Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view showing a battery cell stack, a side plate, a connection member, and a thermal resin plate according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Figure 3 is a plan view showing one of the battery cells included in the battery cell stack of Figure 2 Figure 4 is a perspective view showing a battery pack according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In particular, Figure 4 shows a state in which the battery cell stack 120 of Figure 2
[0049] Referring toFigures 2 to 4 A battery pack 1000 according to an embodiment of the disclosure includes a battery cell stack 120 in which a plurality of battery cells 110 are stacked in one direction, a battery pack frame 1100 that accommodates the battery cell stack 120, and a thermal resin plate 400 between the battery cell stack 120 and a bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100.
[0050] The battery cell 110 according to the present embodiment is a sheet shape having a certain thickness, and the battery cell 110 can be disposed perpendicularly to one surface of the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100. For example, the battery cell 110 can be a pouch-type battery in which an electrode assembly having an electrode lead 111 protruding in one or two directions is accommodated in a pouch case 114. However, this is only one example, and the battery cell according to another embodiment of the disclosure can be a square battery cell.
[0051] For convenience of explanation, the battery cell 110 will be mainly described as a pouch-type battery.
[0052] The battery cell 110 can be a rectangular sheet shape. The battery cell 110 can be formed by accommodating an electrode assembly in a pouch case 114 made of a laminate sheet including a resin layer and a metal layer, and then joining the outer peripheral side of the pouch case 114. As an example, the battery cell 110 can have a structure in which two electrode leads 111 face each other and protrude from one end portion 114a and the other end portion 114b of a battery cell main body 113. As another example, a structure in which all of the electrode leads 111 of the battery cell 110 protrude in one direction is also possible. One electrode lead 111 is a positive electrode lead, and the other is a negative electrode lead.
[0053] The battery cell 110 can be produced by joining the two end portions 114a and 114b and one side portion 114c connecting them of the pouch case 114 in a state in which an electrode assembly (not shown) is accommodated in the pouch case 114. In other words, the battery cell 110 according to an embodiment of the disclosure has three sealing portions 114s in total, in which the sealing portion 114s has a structure sealed by a method such as fusion, and the remaining other side portion can be composed of a folded portion 115. That is, the battery cell 110 according to the present embodiment can be a battery in which an electrode assembly is accommodated inside a pouch case 114, and the pouch case 114 has a sealing portion 114s formed by sealing the outer peripheral side of a portion that accommodates the electrode assembly. In Figure 3In the middle, only a state in which the sealing portion 114s is formed at both end portions 114a and 114b of the pouch case 114 is shown, and the sealing portion is not shown on the upper side (i.e., one side portion 114c) facing the folding portion 115, however, for space utilization, the sealing portion of the one side portion 114c can be in a state of being folded to one side after sealing is completed. In Figure 5 The one side portion 114c in the folded state is also shown in the middle, which will be described below.
[0054] The pouch case 114 of the laminate sheet can include an inner side resin layer for sealing, a metal layer for preventing material penetration, and an outer side resin layer located on the outermost side. Based on the electrode assembly inside the pouch case 114, the inner side resin layer can be located on the innermost side, the outer side resin layer can be located on the outermost side, and the metal layer can be located between the inner side resin layer and the outer side resin layer.
[0055] The outer side resin layer has excellent tensile strength and weather resistance with respect to thickness, and can have electrical insulation properties to protect the electrode assembly from the outside. Such an outer side resin layer can include a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin or a nylon resin. The metal layer can prevent air, moisture, etc. from flowing into the pouch-type secondary battery. The metal layer can include aluminum (Al). The inner side resin layer can be heat-sealed to each other by heat and / or pressure applied in a state in which the electrode assembly is embedded. The inner side resin layer can include cast polypropylene (CPP) or polypropylene (PP).
[0056] The pouch case 114 is divided into two portions, and a concave housing portion in which the electrode assembly can be seated can be formed in at least one of the two portions. Along the outer periphery of the housing portion, the inner side resin layers of the two portions of the pouch case 114 can be joined to each other to provide a sealing portion 114s. The pouch case 114 is sealed in this way so that the battery cell 110, which is a pouch-type secondary battery, can be produced.
[0057] The battery cell 110 can be configured in plurality, and a plurality of battery cells 110 can be stacked to be electrically connected to each other, thereby forming a battery cell stack 120. Specifically, as Figure 2 shown, a plurality of battery cells 110 can be stacked in a standing state in one direction parallel to the y-axis so that one side of the battery cell body 113 (see Figure 3 ) faces the other side.
[0058] That is, the battery cell 110 can be vertically disposed on one surface of the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100. Also, one direction in which the battery cells 110 are stacked can be parallel to one surface of the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100. The electrode lead 111 can protrude in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the battery cells 110 are stacked. That is, in the battery cell 110, one electrode lead 111 can protrude toward the x-axis direction, and the other electrode lead 111 can protrude toward the -x-axis direction. If the electrode lead 111 is a battery cell in which the electrode lead 111 protrudes in only one direction, the electrode lead 111 protrudes in the x-axis direction or the -x-axis direction.
[0059] Meanwhile, the battery cell stack 120 can be provided in a state in which a separate frame that minimizes the outer surface of the battery cell 110 is minimized. That is, the battery cell stack 120 of the present embodiment can have a cell-to-pack structure. Here, the cell-to-pack structure can refer to a module-less structure in which a battery cell structure is directly combined with a battery pack structure without a module frame.
[0060] Generally, the conventional battery pack 1000 has a double assembly structure in which a plurality of battery cells and various components connected thereto are assembled to form a battery module and the plurality of battery modules are again accommodated in the battery pack 1000. In this case, since the battery module includes a module frame that forms the outer surface thereof, the conventional battery cell is double-protected by the module frame of the battery module and the battery pack frame 1100 of the battery pack 1000. However, such a double assembly structure has a disadvantage in that not only the manufacturing cost and manufacturing process of the battery pack 1000 are increased, but also the reassembly performance is reduced when a defect occurs in a partial battery cell. Also, if a cooling member or the like exists outside the battery module, there is a problem in that a heat transfer path between the battery cell and the cooling member becomes complex.
[0061] Therefore, in this embodiment, the unit module mounted on the battery pack 1000 can be provided in the form of a "battery cell stack" that omits the module frame. Thereby, the structure of the battery pack 1000 can be simplified, which provides an advantage in terms of manufacturing cost and manufacturing process, and provides an effect of achieving weight reduction of the battery pack 1000.
[0062] The battery pack 1000 according to the present embodiment can include side plates 200 respectively disposed on both sides of the battery cell stack 120 in the direction in which the battery cells 110 are stacked. Also, the battery pack 1000 can further include a connection member 300 connecting the side plates 200.
[0063] The side plates 200 are located on both sides of the battery cell stack 120 to support the battery cell stack 120. More specifically, they can be located on both sides in the direction in which the plurality of battery cells 110 are stacked (i.e., the direction parallel to the y-axis in Figure 2
[0064] The connection member 300 can be a band member that connects the side plates 200 at the upper portion of the battery cell stack 120. The connection member 300 as a band member can include an elastic metal material, and can be provided in one or more portions. In the case where the connection member 300 is arranged in multiple portions, they can be spaced apart from each other at a certain interval. In Figure 2 and Figure 4 In the example, three connection members 300 are provided at the upper portion of the battery cell stack 120. However, such connection members 300 are not necessarily provided in the battery pack 1000 as an exemplary structure. That is, in another embodiment of the disclosure, only the side plates 200 can be provided on both sides of the battery cell stack 120 without the connection members.
[0065] The present embodiment does not have a form in which the battery cell stack 120 is accommodated and sealed in a module frame, but can have a configuration in which the side plates 200 are arranged on both sides of the battery cell stack 120 and the side plates 200 are fixed by the connection members 300. In other words, the present embodiment has a form in which the module frame is omitted compared to the conventional battery module, and the battery module can be directly attached to the battery pack without the need for a sealed module frame.
[0066] Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view showing a cross-section taken along a cutting line A-A' of Figure 4 . Figure 6 is a partial enlarged view of a portion "B" of Figure 5 . In particular, Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view showing a portion in which the bolt 600 is provided in the thermal resin plate 400.
[0067] Referring to Figure 2 , Figure 4 , Figure 5 and Figure 5 , when the battery cell stack 120 is attached to the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100, the thermal resin plate 400 according to the present embodiment is located between the battery cell stack 120 and the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100.
[0068] The battery pack frame 1100 can be a box-shaped structure having an upper portion open to accommodate the cell stack 120. A battery pack cover (not shown) can be located on the open upper portion of the battery pack frame 1100. In addition, at least one vertical beam 1200 can be located on the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100 to fix the position of the cell stack 120.
[0069] The thermal resin layer 500 formed by coating the thermal resin is located on one surface of the thermal resin plate 400, and the cell stack 120 is fixed to the thermal resin layer 500.
[0070] The thermal resin can include a thermally conductive adhesive material, and in particular, it can include at least one of a silicone material, a polyurethane material, or an acrylic material. The thermal resin layer 500 has excellent thermal conductivity and can quickly discharge heat generated by the battery cell 11 to the outside. In addition, since the thermal resin layer 500 has an adhesive property, it can fix the plurality of battery cells 11 constituting the cell stack 120.
[0071] The thermal resin plate 400 according to the present embodiment is detachably combined with the battery pack frame 1100. The thermal resin plate 400 can be a plate-shaped plate having a predetermined thickness, and can be a plastic member, a metal member, or an insulating-coated metal member. As an example, the thermal resin plate 400 and the battery pack frame 1100 can be combined by a mechanical fastening method.
[0072] As shown in the conventional battery pack, Figure 1 has a structure in which the battery cell 11 is directly engaged with the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100 through the thermal resin layer 50, which causes a problem in that the engagement reliability of the battery cell 11 with the battery pack frame 1100 is not constant at the time of impact or vibration. In addition, when a problem occurs in the battery cell 11 and replacement is required, since the battery cell 11 is engaged to the thermal resin layer 50, it is difficult to replace the battery cell 11. In particular, if the battery cell 11 is forcibly replaced, the battery cell 11 can be damaged due to the adhesive force of the thermal resin layer 50.
[0073] On the other hand, in the battery pack 1000 according to the present embodiment, the cell stack 120 is joined with the thermal resin plate 400 through the thermal resin layer 500, and the thermal resin plate 400 is detachably combined with the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100. Therefore, since the thermal resin plate 400 is combined with the battery pack frame 1100, the joining reliability of the cell 110 and the battery pack frame 1100 can be maintained even at the time of impact or vibration. In addition, when a problem occurs in a part of the cells 110 and replacement is required, the thermal resin plate 400 can be separated from the battery pack frame 1100 so that the cell stack 120 including the cell 110 causing the problem can be easily separated and replaced with another. That is, the battery pack 1000 according to the present embodiment has an advantage that it is not particularly difficult to replace the cell 110.
[0074] Hereinafter, an example of the combined shape of the thermal resin plate 400 and the battery pack frame 1100 will be described.
[0075] The thermal resin plate 400 according to one embodiment of the present disclosure can be combined with the battery pack frame 1100 in a fastening manner of the bolt 600 and the nut 700. The bolt 600 can be joined to the lower surface of the thermal resin plate 400. As an example, the bolt 600 can be welded and joined to the lower surface of the thermal resin plate 400. The bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100 can be formed with a hole 1100H, and the bolt 600 can pass through the hole 1100H of the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100 and be fastened with the nut 700.
[0076] As long as the thermal resin plate 400 can be firmly fixed to the battery pack frame 1100, the size or the number of the bolt 600 joined to the lower surface of the thermal resin plate 400 is not particularly limited.
[0077] The thermal resin plate 400 can be combined with the battery pack frame 1100 in a manner that the bolt 600 passes through the hole 1100H of the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100 and is fastened with the nut 700. Subsequently, the thermal resin can be applied to one surface of the thermal resin plate 400 to form the thermal resin layer 500, and the cell 110 can be attached on the thermal resin layer 500. If the cell 110 has a problem and needs to be replaced, the cell 110 and the thermal resin plate 400 can be simply separated from the battery pack frame 1100 by releasing the combination between the bolt 600 and the nut 700.
[0078] Meanwhile, a recess 400D having a shape recessed corresponding to the lower portion of the battery cell 100 can be formed on one surface of the thermal resin plate 400, and the recess 400D is formed in plural, and the plural recesses 400D can correspond to each of the battery cells 110 in the battery cell stack 120 one-to-one. Each of the battery cells 110 can be seated in the recess 400D. Specifically, each of the battery cells 110 can be attached to the thermal resin layer 500 on the recess 400D.
[0079] As described above Figure 3 , the battery cell 110 has the side portion 114c and the folded portion 115, and the sealed portion of the side portion 114c in the folded state can be disposed to face upward, and the folded portion 115 can be disposed to face downward. The recess 400D of the thermal resin plate 400 according to the present embodiment can have a shape recessed corresponding to the shape of the folded portion 115 of the battery cell 110. The recess 400D is formed in the thermal resin plate 400 so that the battery cell 110 can be more firmly attached to the thermal resin layer 500. The recess 400D can be provided by a forging process for the thermal resin plate 400.
[0080] Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view showing a cross-section cut along a cutting line C-C’ of Figure 4 . In particular, Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view showing a portion in which the cooling flow path 1100C is formed in the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100.
[0081] Referring to Figure 4 , Figure 5 and Figure 7 together, the inside of the bottom 1100F of the battery pack frame 1100 according to the present embodiment can be formed with the cooling flow path 1100C. The coolant C for cooling the battery cell stack 120 can flow through the cooling flow path 1100C. For example, the coolant can be cooling water. The battery pack according to the present embodiment can have a water-cooling cooling structure. The heat generated in the battery cell 110 can be discharged to the outside through the cooling flow path 1100C of the bottom 1100F via the thermal resin layer 500 and the thermal resin plate 400.
[0082] The width, number, or area of the cooling flow path 1100C is not particularly limited as long as the battery cell stack 120 can be effectively cooled. However, preferably, the cooling flow path 1100C is provided at a position that does not interfere with the holes 1100H of the above-described bolt 600 and the bottom 1100F. Specifically, the bolt 600 and the holes 1100H of the bottom 1100F according to the present embodiment can be provided so as to avoid the cooling flow path 1100C. That is, the holes 1100H of the bottom 1100F can be formed in a portion of the bottom 1100F through which the cooling flow path 1100C does not pass. More specifically, when the bottom 1100F is viewed in a direction perpendicular to one surface of the bottom 1100F, the bolt 600 and the holes 1100H of the bottom 1100F can be located in a portion in which the cooling flow path 1100C is not formed. Here, the direction perpendicular to one surface of the bottom 1100F can be a direction parallel to the z-axis in the drawing. Since the bolt 600 passes through the holes 1100H, the bolt 600 can be provided so as to avoid the cooling flow path 1100C.
