[0074] As requested, detailed embodiments of this disclosure are disclosed herein; however, it should be understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely examples of the present disclosure that may be implemented in various and alternative forms. The drawings are not necessarily dimensioned; some features may be exaggerated or reduced to illustrate details of specific parts. Therefore, the specific structural and functional details disclosed herein should not be construed as limiting, but rather as a representative basis for teaching those skilled in the art to implement the present disclosure in various ways.

[0075] Unless specifically stated from the context, as used herein, the term “approximately” is understood to mean within the range of tolerances commonly found in the art, such as within 2 standard deviations of the mean. “Approximately” can also be understood to mean within 10%, 5%, 1%, 0.5%, 0.1%, 0.05%, or 0.01% of the stated value. “Approximately” can also be understood to imply an exact value. Unless explicitly stated from the context, the numerical values provided herein are modified by the term “approximately.”

[0076] In an exemplary embodiment, the battery assembly includes a first battery component portion and a second battery component portion. A primary adhesive layer is bonded to the first battery component portion and disposed between the first and second battery component portions. A selectively detachable adhesive layer is disposed between the primary adhesive layer and the second battery component portion. The selectively detachable adhesive layer bonds the second battery component portion to the primary adhesive layer and the first battery component portion.

[0077] When a triggering stimulus (such as, for example, heat, high-intensity focused ultrasound, and / or force) is applied to the selectively decoupled adhesive layer, the selectively decoupled adhesive layer causes the second battery component portion to detach from the main adhesive layer and the first battery component portion. In an exemplary embodiment, advantageously, the selectively decoupled adhesive layer allows the first battery component portion to detach from and be removed from the second battery component portion to facilitate maintenance of the battery assembly. For example, the battery assembly can be disassembled for the purpose of recycling the battery assembly. In another example, the first battery component portion can be replaced with a new one or a replacement first battery component portion to extend the lifespan of the battery assembly.

[0078] Referring now to the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference numerals refer to the same features throughout the multiple views. Figure 1 An exemplary device 200 (e.g., a battery electric vehicle (BEV)) including a battery assembly 205 comprising one or more battery packs 210. The battery packs 210 include a plurality of battery cells 100. The plurality of battery cells 100 may be connected in various combinations (e.g., partially in parallel and partially in series) to supply electrical energy at a desired voltage. The battery pack 210 is shown electrically connected to an electric generator unit 220 useful for powering the vehicle 200. The electric generator unit 220 may include output components, such as an output shaft that provides mechanical energy useful for powering the vehicle 200. Numerous variations of the vehicle 200 are conceivable, and this disclosure is not intended to limit it to the provided examples.

[0079] Figure 2A portion of a battery assembly 205 according to an exemplary embodiment and a method for maintaining the battery assembly 205 are schematically shown. The battery assembly 205 includes battery component portions 10 and 12. As will be discussed in further detail below, battery component portion 10 may be, for example, a battery cell 100, a module containing a plurality of battery cells 100, or some other battery component portion of the battery assembly 205. Similarly, battery component portion 12 may be, for example, a battery cell 100, a module containing a plurality of battery cells 100, a battery pack cover, or some other battery component portion of the battery assembly 205.

[0080] A primary adhesive layer 14 is attached to battery component portion 10 and is positioned between battery component portions 10 and 12. As shown, the primary adhesive layer 14 is directly attached to battery component portion 10. In an exemplary embodiment, the primary adhesive layer 14 includes an adhesive, such as, for example, a gap-filling or foam adhesive, a thermosetting adhesive, and / or a thermoplastic adhesive. Non-limiting examples of adhesives capable of forming the primary adhesive layer 14 include acrylic adhesives, polyurethane adhesives, epoxy adhesives, cyanoacrylate adhesives, and / or silicone adhesives. In certain examples, epoxy adhesives, silicone adhesives, and / or polyurethane adhesives capable of foaming or not foaming may be used.

[0081] A selectively detachable adhesive layer 16 is placed between the main adhesive layer and the battery component portion 12, and connects the battery component portion 12 to the main adhesive layer 14 and the battery component portion 10. As shown, the selectively detachable adhesive layer 16 is directly connected to the main adhesive layer 14 and independently directly connected to the battery component portion 12. Furthermore, the selectively detachable adhesive layer 16 is indirectly connected to the battery component portion 10 via the main adhesive layer 14.

[0082] In an exemplary embodiment, the selectively detachable adhesive layer 16 comprises an adhesive selected from glass-like polymer adhesives, hot-melt adhesives, pressure-sensitive adhesives, thermosetting adhesives, thermoplastic adhesives, or combinations thereof. In an exemplary embodiment, glass-like polymers are polymeric materials whose molecular bonds can be altered at temperatures increased due to thermally activated bond-exchange reactions. This allows them to be initially applied as a liquid and cured to form a strong adhesive bond, but subsequently flowable as a liquid upon sufficient heating.

[0083] Additionally, the selectively detachable adhesive layer 16 may further include additives, fillers, or the like. In an exemplary embodiment, the selectively detachable adhesive layer 16 includes ferromagnetic microparticles incorporated into the adhesive. In an exemplary embodiment, the ferromagnetic microparticles are present in the adhesive in an amount of approximately 1 wt% to approximately 60 wt% based on the total weight of the selectively detachable adhesive layer 16.

[0084] In an exemplary embodiment, the selectively disconnectable adhesive layer 16 has components, formulations, or otherwise operable to disconnect the battery component portion 12 from the main adhesive layer 14 and the battery component portion 10 in response to a triggering stimulus (indicated by a single arrow 18). Specifically, the triggering stimulus 18 is applied to the selectively disconnectable adhesive layer 16 such that the selectively disconnectable adhesive layer 16 responds to the triggering stimulus 18 by disconnecting the battery component portion 12 from the main adhesive layer 14 and the battery component portion 10. In an exemplary embodiment, and as will be discussed in further detail below, the triggering stimulus 18 may be heat, high-intensity focused ultrasound, force, or a combination thereof. For example, to remove the battery component portion 10, heat may be applied to the selectively disconnectable adhesive layer 16 to soften, liquefy, or otherwise weaken the selectively disconnectable adhesive layer 16, and force may also be applied to soften, liquefy, or otherwise weaken the selectively disconnectable adhesive layer 16 to disconnect the battery component portion 12 from the main adhesive layer 14 and the battery component portion 10.

[0085] In an exemplary embodiment, battery assembly 205 or a portion thereof may be removed from device 200 for maintainability (e.g., recycling, installation of replacement battery parts for extended lifespan, or similar purposes). As shown, battery part portion 10 and main adhesive layer 14 are removed together from battery assembly 205. In an exemplary embodiment, battery part portion 10 and main adhesive layer 14 are replaced together with replacement battery part portion 110 and replacement main adhesive layer 114. Retained portions of selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16 are attached to replacement main adhesive layer 114 by applying additional triggering stimulation 118. As shown, replacement main adhesive layer 114 is directly attached to replacement battery part portion 110.

[0086] Also refer to Figure 3In an exemplary embodiment, the battery assembly 205 is configured to include or comprise a modular group 120, which includes a plurality of battery modules 122, each battery module 122 containing a plurality of battery cells 100. The battery modules 122 are enclosed in a battery pack cover 124. In this embodiment, the battery modules 122 are analogous to battery component portion 10, and the battery pack cover 124 is analogous to battery component portion 12. As illustrated, a primary adhesive layer 14 is directly bonded to the battery modules 122, and a selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16 is positioned between the primary adhesive layer 14 and the battery pack cover 124, and is directly bonded to both the primary adhesive layer 14 and the battery pack cover 124.

[0087] In an exemplary embodiment, a triggering stimulus 18 in the form of heat is applied to the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16. In one example, heat is applied indirectly to the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16 using conductive and / or radiative heat transfer processes by applying heat along the surface of the battery pack cover 124. Alternatively, heat is applied directly or indirectly to the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16 using a forced convection heat transfer process that blows heat through an exhaust vent 126 adjacent to the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16. Alternatively, an induction heating process can be used to generate heat in the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16, for example, by incorporating or otherwise including ferromagnetic microparticles into the adhesive of the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16, which convert inductive energy into heat.

[0088] Also refer to Figures 5A-6B In an exemplary embodiment, the modular assembly 120 further includes a preformed foam structure 128 having a peripheral foam wall 130 surrounding the opening 132. The peripheral foam wall extends between the battery component portions 10 and 12, and a primary adhesive layer 14 and a selectively disengaged adhesive layer 16 are positioned within the opening 132 of the preformed foam structure 128. Figures 5A-5B As illustrated in the diagram, in an exemplary embodiment, the preformed foam structure 128 has a rectangular peripheral foam wall 130 surrounding a rectangular opening 132. Alternatively, more than one preformed foam structure 128 and / or preformed foam structures with different shapes may be used. Figures 6A-6B As illustrated in the figure, in an exemplary embodiment, a plurality of preformed foam structures 128, for example having peripheral foam walls 130 in an annular or elliptical shape, may be placed between battery component portions 10 and 12. In an exemplary embodiment, advantageously, the preformed foam structures 128 allow for efficient use of the primary adhesive layer 14 to fill any gaps and / or spaces in the battery component portions 10 and 12.

[0089] refer to Figure 2 and Figure 4The battery assembly 205 is configured to include a battery cell group 140, which includes a plurality of battery cells 100. In this embodiment, one battery cell 100 is analogous to a battery component portion 10, and adjacent battery cells 100 are analogous to battery component portions 12. In an exemplary embodiment, the selectively disconnected adhesive layer 16 further serves as a dielectric insulating layer during normal operation. In this embodiment, a triggering stimulus 18 in the form of heat is applied to the selectively disconnected adhesive layer 16 for use in a forced convection heat transfer process, which blows heat through an exhaust vent 126 adjacent to the selectively disconnected adhesive layer 16.

[0090] refer to Figure 7 In an exemplary embodiment, the trigger stimulus 18 comprises high-intensity focused ultrasound applied to the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16. Specifically, most of the ultrasound waves (trigger stimulus 18) are focused at the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16. Waveguide 201 may be used with a sufficient signal travel path to allow for signal guidance and focusing, thereby forming a focal point 202 at the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16, resulting in plastic wave propagation and / or heat generation through the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16. Guiding and focusing multiple elements to focal point 202 allows ultrasound to pass through other parts of the battery assembly 205 without damage. Decoupling can be caused by high-intensity focused ultrasound in the form of excessive heat, vibration, or cavitation. If a direct path to the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16 exists, a single signal with a sufficiently high (e.g., destructive) amplitude can be used.

[0091] refer to Figure 8 In an exemplary embodiment, the battery assembly 205 further includes an additional primary adhesive layer 114 disposed between the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16 and the battery component portion 12. As illustrated, the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16 is directly coupled to the additional primary adhesive layer 114 and indirectly coupled to the battery component portion 12 via the additional primary adhesive layer 114. In an exemplary embodiment, the triggering stimulus 18 includes a force applied in an in-plane tensile mode to the selectively decoupled adhesive layer 16, which elongates to decouple the battery component portions 10 and 12. In an exemplary embodiment, the adhesive may be an elastomer with relatively high failure strain, including, for example, natural or synthetic rubber-based adhesives or neoprene-based adhesives. The elastomer adhesive layer can be a single layer or have a foam core layer and an elastomer shell layer.

[0092] Although the best mode for carrying out this disclosure has been described in detail, those skilled in the art will recognize various alternative designs and embodiments for practicing the disclosure within the scope of the appended claims.
