[0020] In the following detailed description, many specific details are set forth in order to provide a full understanding of the subject technology. It should be understood that the subject technology can be practiced without these specific details. In other cases, well-known structures and techniques are not shown in detail to avoid confusing the subject technology.

[0021] Furthermore, although the present specification sets forth specific details of various embodiments, it should be understood that the description is illustrative only and should not be construed as limiting in any way. Furthermore, it is contemplated that although specific embodiments of the present disclosure may be disclosed or illustrated in the context of an IV set, these embodiments may be used in other fluid delivery systems. Furthermore, various applications of such embodiments and modifications thereof that may occur to a person skilled in the art are also included in the general concepts described herein.

[0022] According to some embodiments, the present application discloses various features and advantages of a telescoping tubing extension kit. The telescoping tubing extension kit can provide efficient and safe maintenance of a fluid pathway, such as a fluid pathway for transferring medical fluids toward or away from a patient. The telescoping tubing extension kit can maintain the structural integrity and sterility of the fluid pathway by preventing accidental disconnection when pulling or tensile forces are applied to the telescoping tubing extension kit or another device forming the fluid pathway, such as when the patient moves or when the medical tubing is pulled away from the patient.

[0023] The telescoping tubing extension kit may also prevent injury to the patient or caregiver by preventing accidental disconnection of the fluid pathway from the patient, which could deprive the patient of medication and expose the patient or others to the medication. The telescoping tubing extension kit may also reduce the labor and costs associated with fluid transfers by avoiding accidental disconnection of the fluid pathway.

[0024] The telescoping tubing extension kit includes a sleeve and a tubing that are longitudinally movable relative to each other to provide a telescoping function wherein the tubing can be moved through a portion of the sleeve length to increase the length of a fluid path through the telescoping tubing extension kit.

[0025] At least a portion of the length of the tubing is positioned within the sleeve such that the tubing is concentrically positioned within the sleeve when a cross-sectional profile of the telescoping tubing extension set is viewed in a plane transverse to the longitudinal axis of the telescoping tubing extension set.

[0026] The tubing positioned within the sleeve forms a fluid passageway when the telescoping tubing extension set is in the first orientation and the second orientation, and when the telescoping tubing extension set is moved between the first orientation and the second orientation.

[0027] Figure 1An example of a telescoping tubing extension kit in a first orientation according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The telescoping tubing extension kit is coupled to tubing of an IV set for directing fluids to a patient 10. The IV set may include a medication bag 12, a drip chamber 14, tubing 16, and an IV catheter 18.

[0028] The telescoping tubing extension kit 100 fluidly connects the tubing 16 to the IV catheter 18. Although the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 is shown as being coupled between the medication bag 12 and the patient 10 along the fluid pathway of the IV kit, it should be understood that the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 can be coupled within other fluid pathways, such as between the patient and an IV pump or between the patient and a dialysis machine. The telescoping tubing extension kit 100 can also be coupled along another portion of the fluid pathway. For example, the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 can be coupled along a proximal portion of the fluid pathway, such as between the tubing 16 and the medication bag 12 or other fluid therapy device. The telescoping tubing extension kit 100 can also be coupled along other fluid pathways, such as along a portion of a feeding tube pathway.

[0029] The telescoping tubing extension kit 100 can form all or part of a fluid pathway. In some aspects, the tubing of the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 can extend from a fluid source to a sleeve; however, the present disclosure also contemplates that the tubing of the telescoping tubing extension kit can be coupled to another length of tubing or another fluid device using a connector. Figure 1 An example of a connector 20 for coupling the tubing of a telescoping tubing extension set to the tubing of an IV set is shown.

[0030] The telescoping tube extension kit 100 is movable between a first position and a second position. Figure 2 The telescoping tube extension kit 100 is shown in a first orientation, Figure 3 The telescoping tubing extension set 100 is shown in a second orientation. Although the telescoping tubing extension set 100 is shown coupled to the IV catheter 18, it should be understood that the telescoping tubing extension set 100 can be coupled to another portion of an IV set, another fluid transfer device, or to a tubing coupler 19 that can be coupled between the telescoping tubing extension set 100 and another device, such as the IV catheter 18.

[0031] The telescoping tubular extension kit 100 includes a sleeve 102 and a tubular 200 positioned within the sleeve 102. The sleeve 102 and the tubular 200 are longitudinally movable relative to each other to allow the telescoping tubular extension kit 100 to move between first and second orientations.

[0032] Sleeve 102 is shown as being constructed of a transparent material to illustrate the position of tube 200 relative to sleeve 102, however, the present disclosure contemplates that either sleeve 102 and / or tube 200 may include transparent or opaque materials.

[0033] In a first orientation, the tube 200 extends through the opening at the first end 104 of the sleeve and along the tube lumen 106 formed by the inner surface of the sleeve. The distal end 202 of the tube is coupled to the tube coupler 19, and the second end 108 of the sleeve is also coupled to the tube coupler 19.

[0034] In the first orientation of the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 , the fluid passageway extends through the tubing coupler 19 and the fluid channel formed by the inner surface of the tubing 200 .

[0035] The distal end 202 of the tubular and the second end 108 of the sleeve are coupled to the tubular coupler 19. The second end 108 of the sleeve includes a locking feature configured to couple with the tubular coupler 19 and prevent the sleeve 102 from being separated from the tubular coupler.

[0036] The distal end 202 of the tubing is also coupled to the tubing coupler 19 and is configured to allow the distal end 202 of the tubing to be separated or withdrawn from the tubing coupler when a force exceeds a threshold value.

[0037] When the force on the telescoping tube extension kit 100 exceeds a threshold, the telescoping tube extension kit 100 may move from the first orientation to the second orientation. The force may be applied to either the sleeve 102 and / or the tube 200. The force may be in any direction that causes the sleeve 102 and the tube 200 to be pulled away from each other. For example, the force that causes the telescoping tube extension kit 100 to move from the first orientation to the second orientation may be caused by the tube 200 being pulled away from the first end 104 of the sleeve in the D1 direction, and may be caused by the sleeve 102 being pulled away from the tube 200 in the D2 direction.

[0038] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the threshold force that can cause the tubing 200 to be separated or extracted from the tubing coupler 19 is between about 1 lbf and about 10 lbf, or the threshold force can be between about 3 lbf and about 7 lbf. In some embodiments, the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 is configured such that the tubing 200 is separated or extracted from the tubing coupler 19 when the force exceeds about five lbf.

[0039] When the force on the telescoping tube extension kit 100 exceeds a threshold, the telescoping tube extension kit 100 moves toward a second orientation, such as Figure 3 As shown, therein the tubular 200 is longitudinally moved within the sleeve 102 in a direction away from the second end 108 of the sleeve.

[0040] The tube 200 can move along the longitudinal axis A1 defined between the first and second ends 104, 108 of the sleeve. In the second orientation, the tube 200 can move a distance away from the second end 108 of the sleeve that is less than the length of the sleeve 102 so that the distal end 202 of the tube remains positioned within the tube lumen 106 of the sleeve.

[0041] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the length of the sleeve 102 is defined between the first and second ends 104, 108 of the sleeve and is between about 1 inch and about 8 inches, or between about 2 inches and about 6 inches. In some embodiments, the length of the sleeve 102 is about 4 inches.

[0042] In the second orientation of the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 , the fluid pathway P1 extends through the tubing coupler 19 , the tubing lumen 106 of the sleeve, and the fluid passage formed by the inner surface of the tubing 200 .

[0043] In the first and second orientations of the telescoping tubular extension kit 100, the sleeve 102 is coupled to the tubular coupler 19 by locking a locking feature 110 at the second end 108 of the sleeve. The locking feature 110 is configured to allow the second end 108 of the sleeve to be coupled and uncoupled from the tubular coupler 19 when coupling or uncoupling is desired. However, the locking feature 110 also prevents the sleeve 102 from being accidentally separated or uncoupled from the tubular coupler 19, such as when a force is applied to the telescoping tubular extension kit 100, or when the telescoping tubular extension kit 100 is moved from the first orientation to the second orientation.

[0044] Reference Figure 4 and Figure 5 The locking feature 110 may be formed at the second end 108 of the sleeve by any structure or feature configured to prevent accidental separation of the sleeve 102 from the pipe coupler 19. In some aspects of the present disclosure, the locking feature is configured to prevent the sleeve 102 from separating from the pipe coupler 19 before the pipe 200 is separated from the pipe coupler 19. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the locking feature is configured to prevent the sleeve 102 from separating from the pipe coupler 19 until a separation force applied to the sleeve is greater than a threshold force for moving the telescoping pipe extension kit 100 from the first orientation to the second orientation.

[0045] The threshold separation force for the connection between the sleeve 102 and the pipe coupling 19 is configured for a force in the longitudinal direction. Thus, a rotational force applied to the sleeve 102 or the pipe coupling 19 can allow the sleeve 102 to be unscrewed or separated from the pipe coupling 19, wherein the rotational force is less than the threshold separation force for the connection between the sleeve 102 and the pipe coupling 19.

[0046] The locking feature 110 may be formed as threads extending radially inward from the inner surface 112 of the sleeve and configured to couple with mating threads of the pipe coupling 19. The locking feature 110 may also be configured as any one of a protrusion extending from the sleeve 102 or a groove extending into the sleeve 102 and configured to engage against the other or protrusions or grooves of the pipe coupling 19. In the case where the locking feature is a thread or a protrusion and a groove, the coupling of the sleeve 102 to the pipe coupling 19 may be achieved by less than 180 degrees of rotation between the sleeve 102 and the pipe coupling 19.

[0047] The present disclosure also contemplates embodiments in which the locking feature is another structure or function, such as an interference fit or snap-fit connection between the sleeve 102 and the pipe coupling 19. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the locking feature is formed by the inner surface 112 at the second end of the sleeve, and the cross-sectional width of the locking feature is substantially equal to the cross-sectional width formed by the outer surface 21 of the pipe coupling 19.

[0048] When the sleeve 102 is coupled to the tubular coupler 19, the inner surface of the sleeve engages against the outer surface 21 of the tubular coupler. In the first orientation of the telescoping tubular extension kit 100, the locking feature 110 of the sleeve is coupled to the tubular coupler 19, and the distal end 202 of the tubular is positioned within the fluid conduit 22 formed by the inner surface 24 of the tubular coupler.

[0049] To position the distal end 202 of the tubing within the fluid conduit 22 of the tubing coupler and form a fluid seal therebetween, the distal end portion 204 of the tubing may have a tapered outer surface 206 .

[0050] The tapered surface along the distal end portion of the tubing 200 can be formed by an outer surface of the tubing having a cross-sectional width that tapers toward the distal end 202. In some embodiments of the telescoping tubing extension kit 100, the tapered distal end portion of the tubing can form a male Luer taper that is configured to be received within and engaged against a female Luer taper formed by the inner surface 24 of the tubing coupler.

[0051] The distal end portion of the tube 200 may also include a collar 208 configured to prevent or limit longitudinal movement of the tube 200 relative to the sleeve 102 when the telescoping tube extension set 100 is moved toward the second orientation.

[0052] The collar 208 may prevent or limit longitudinal movement of the tube 200 by engaging against a portion of the sleeve 102 or another portion of the telescoping tube extension set 100 as the tube 200 moves proximally toward the first end 104 of the sleeve.

[0053] Reference Figure 6 The collar 208 is formed as a protrusion or wall extending radially outward from the outer surface 206 of the tube in a direction away from the longitudinal axis A2 of the fluid passage 210 .

[0054] The collar 208 has a length that extends around the perimeter of the tubular 200. The length of the collar 208 is equal to or greater than the circumference of the tubular 200, such that the collar 208 extends around the entire perimeter of the tubular 200. However, in some embodiments, the collar 208 extends around a portion of the perimeter of the tubular 200. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the collar 208 is discontinuous around the perimeter of the tubular 200, and / or the collar 208 forms more than one discontinuous protrusion or wall extending from the outer surface 206 of the tubular.

[0055] To prevent or limit longitudinal movement of the tube 200 relative to the sleeve 102, the outer surface of the collar 208 defines a width W1 that is greater than a width W2 defined by an outer surface of the tube 200 adjacent to the collar 208 and less than a width W3 defined by the sleeve's inner surface 112. The collar 208 may engage against a portion of the sleeve 102 or another portion of the telescoping tube extension set 100 when the tube 200 is longitudinally retracted in a proximal direction toward the sleeve's first end 104.

[0056] Reference Figure 6 , shows a cross-sectional view of a portion of the tube 200 and sleeve 102 when the telescoping tube extension kit 100 is in the second orientation. The distal end portion 204 of the tube is withdrawn from the fluid conduit 22 of the fluid coupling, and the tube 200 is longitudinally retracted toward the first end 104 of the sleeve.

[0057] Further retraction of the tubular 200 in the proximal direction is impeded when the collar 208 engages against a seal 240 positioned between the sleeve 102 and the tubular 200. The seal 240 is located at or adjacent the first end 104 of the sleeve to allow the tubular 200 to move between the seal 240 and the second end 108 of the sleeve along the length of the tubular.

[0058] Seal 240 is also configured to prevent fluid from moving between sleeve 102 and tubular 200. Seal 240 can prevent fluid from moving between sleeve 102 and tubular 200 when telescoping tubular extension kit 100 is in a second orientation in which a portion of fluid pathway P1 extends through the sleeve tubular lumen 106.

[0059] To prevent fluid from moving between the sleeve 102 and the tubular 200, the seal 140 has an inner surface that forms an opening through the seal 140 and is configured to engage against the tubular 200, and an outer surface that is configured to engage against the sleeve 102. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the seal 240 can be at least partially positioned within a groove or wall groove formed by the sleeve 102, which can prevent movement of the seal 140 when either the tubular 200 or the sleeve 102 moves relative to each other.

[0060] To limit longitudinal movement of the tubular 200 toward the first end 104 of the sleeve, a portion of the sleeve extends into the tubular lumen 106 of the sleeve and is configured to engage against the collar 208 .

[0061] To prevent fluid movement between the sleeve 102 and the tubular 200 and / or limit longitudinal movement of the tubular 200 toward the first end 104 of the sleeve, the cross-sectional width W4 of the opening of the seal 240 is greater than the width W2 defined by the outer surface of the tubular 200 and less than the width W1 defined by the collar 208.

[0062] The seal 240 may be an o-ring, another ring or torus-shaped seal, or another material configured to prevent fluid movement. The present disclosure also contemplates that in some embodiments, the sleeve 102 may have a groove or channel extending along the inner surface 112 of the sleeve and configured to receive a collar or protrusion of the tubular 200 therein.

[0063] In some embodiments, the sleeve can have a tube stop feature that is separate from the seal 240. In some aspects, the tube stop feature can be formed by a flange or ridge extending toward the tube 200 and configured to engage against the collar 208, and the seal 240 can be positioned between the tube stop feature and the first end 104 of the sleeve. It should also be understood that the present disclosure contemplates other embodiments that provide a tube stop feature and a seal between the sleeve 102 and the tube 200. In some examples of the present disclosure, the seal can be positioned between the sleeve 102 and the tube 200 such that the seal moves with the tube 200.

[0064] Features of the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 provide a fluid pathway having a first length in a first configuration and a second length in a second configuration, wherein the second length is greater than the first length. Thus, if the tubing 200, or another portion of the telescoping tubing extension kit 100, or other device forming the fluid pathway is pulled to an extent that the force exceeds a threshold force to separate the tubing 200 from the tubing coupler 19, the tubing 200 can move longitudinally within the sleeve to increase the length of the fluid pathway. By increasing the length of the fluid pathway in the second orientation, the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 prevents rupture or separation of any portion of the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 or IV set forming the fluid pathway. As a result, the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 can maintain the structural integrity and sterility of the fluid pathway.

[0065] The telescoping tubular extension kit 100 is also configured to enable the tubular 200 and the sleeve 102 to move toward each other to move from the second configuration toward the first configuration. After the telescoping tubular extension kit 100 is moved to the second configuration, such as when the tubular 200 has been pulled, the tubular 200 can be longitudinally moved back toward the tubular coupler 19 until the distal end 202 of the tubular is located within the fluid conduit 22.

[0066] The structural integrity and sterility of the fluid pathway are maintained when the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 is moved between the first and second positions. By maintaining the structural integrity and sterility of the fluid pathway, the telescoping tubing extension kit 100 can reduce labor and costs associated with fluid transfer.
