Description

[0001] The present invention relates to a method for transmitting information via a display system of a vehicle and to a method for receiving vehicle information using a mobile terminal, for example, a mobile phone. The present invention further relates to a display system for a vehicle configured to implement the method for transmitting information. The method particularly relates to transmitting information as optical code information, for example, using a QR code.

[0002] For the transmission of data between a vehicle, for example a passenger car or truck, and a mobile device, for example a mobile phone or a mobile music player, radio or wired connections are usually used. Radio or wired connections are usually bidirectional, as inFig. 1 is shown schematically. Data 12 can be exchanged between a vehicle 10 and a mobile terminal 11, for example in binary form. When using a radio connection, there is a risk that the transmitted data 12 will be intercepted by an attacker 13. Regardless of whether the data is transmitted via a cable or radio, with a bidirectional connection, data can be transmitted from the mobile terminal to the vehicle 10, which poses the risk that data harmful to the vehicle 10 will be introduced. Furthermore, with a wired connection, electrical interference can penetrate an electrical system of the vehicle 10. With a wired connection or a radio connection, therefore, in addition to complex interfaces, additional security mechanisms are also required.

[0003] In this context, US 2010 / 0 241 857 A1 discloses an authentication method for a mobile terminal. A device in a vehicle generates an authentication key and displays, on a display unit, a two-dimensional code including the generated authentication key and a URL indicating a predetermined web page on a data network. A portable terminal acquires the authentication key and the URL from the two-dimensional code by reading the two-dimensional code via an imaging unit, downloads a communication program for communication with the device in the vehicle from the web page indicated by the URL, and transmits the authentication key to the device in the vehicle by causing the downloaded communication program to operate.According to one embodiment, the device in the vehicle generates a so-called QR code as a two-dimensional code.

[0004] JP 2009-244239 A relates to a location information display and input system. A photographing device photographs a QR code displayed on a display section of a vehicle navigation device at a destination with a photographing section, decodes it with a QR code decoding section, and obtains location information such as the longitude and latitude of the destination and name information, such as the name of the destination and a building name.

[0005] US 2012 / 0 142 322 A1 relates to providing location information using a matrix code. According to one embodiment, a mobile device comprises an optical reading device, such as a camera. The optical reading device can be configured to capture a machine-readable code, such as a matrix code, which has been made available to a user of the mobile device. The matrix code can relate to a QR code. The QR codes can be presented to the user of the mobile device, for example, in connection with a display device of a vehicle navigation system. According to one embodiment, the information encoded in the QR code can comprise address information.

[0006] WO 2011 / 113 874 A2 relates to a concept for communicating between different units using different data portions for different channels. A first unit for communicating with a second unit and a third unit comprises a data divider for dividing a data unit into a first data portion and a second data portion. The data portions are processed with an output interface to transmit a first message to the third unit and a second message to the second unit. In the third unit, the data portion received directly from the first unit and the other data portion received via the second unit are combined. In one embodiment, the second message is displayed as a QR code or any other two-dimensional code on a display. The second unit has a digital camera and a QR code reader for reading the two-dimensional code to extract the information from the second message.

[0007] US Pat. No. 6,765,495 B1 discloses a cross-vehicle communication system in which information is transmitted between vehicles via data sources, data sensors, and vehicle sensors on each vehicle, which are connected to a central processing unit on each vehicle. The central processing unit receives information from other vehicles via the data sensors and calculates information weights for this data. The information weighting can be based on temporal or spatial displacement or other factors. The central processing unit then combines this weighted data with the data provided by the vehicle sensors to determine the vehicle and situation status. The central processing unit then transmits control information to the vehicle or the vehicle driver. The central processing unit also creates messages that are transmitted to other vehicles via the data sources contained in the vehicle.

[0008] From US 2005 / 0 240 344 A1, a route guidance method is known which provides route guidance from a current position to a destination using a navigation device capable of displaying a route from the current position to the destination in combination with a portable terminal carried by a user. The navigation device generates a two-dimensional code based on information associated with the destination and a location where the user exits their car en route to the destination, and displays the code thus generated. The portable terminal acquires the information associated with the location where the user exits their car and the destination by reading the two-dimensional code displayed by the navigation device.

[0009] US 2008 / 0 077 324 A1 discloses a method in which, based on a transmission request from a portable terminal, a two-dimensional code is generated through an input operation or communication. The code contains information about a scaling rate of map information for guidance displayed on the on-board terminal and a current position of a vehicle. The two-dimensional code is displayed on a terminal display unit together with an area of the map information corresponding to an area to be displayed on the portable terminal. When the portable terminal captures the two-dimensional code with an image acquisition unit, the portable terminal detects the scale rate and current position with a code analyzer, receives a range of map information corresponding to the scale rate and including at least the current position from the server unit, and displays the information on the display unit of the portable terminal. The map information can be continuously displayed on a separate terminal in a similar manner without giving the user a sense of strangeness, thus providing the user with a good orientation.

[0010] US 2012 / 0 128 267 A1 discloses an electronic device that can derive device-specific information, dynamically generate a matrix code containing the information as well as user support information, and transmit the dynamically generated code to a display. When a user scans the matrix code with a reader, the reader can decode the specific information and the user support information (or use a backend server for decoding) and initiate a user support request. In this way, user support for electronic devices can be facilitated through dynamically generated matrix codes. Support can then be offered to the user in response to the triggered support request.Problems can be automatically resolved for the user, instructions can be provided to the user, one or more notifications can be provided to the user, service calls can be scheduled for the user, and so on.

[0023] Alternatively or additionally, processing the decoded code information comprises transmitting the code information to a data server. The data server can, for example, be a server of a workshop, a server of a radio station, a server of a car rental company, or a server of a toll or parking system. Depending on the transmitted vehicle information, for example, a fault in the vehicle can be analyzed in the workshop server, or additional information about a piece of music played by the vehicle's infotainment system can be retrieved from the radio station server. A server of a car rental company can, for example, store information about routes traveled and assign it to a vehicle renter. Payment information and vehicle identification information can be used by a server of a toll or parking system to pay a toll or parking fee.Processing the decoded code information additionally or alternatively includes receiving and outputting feedback from the server based on the transmission of the decoded code information to the server. [0027] The present invention will be described in detail below with reference to the drawings. Fig. 1 shows a connection between a vehicle and a mobile terminal according to the prior art. Fig. 2 shows a connection between a vehicle and a mobile terminal according to an embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 3 shows method steps of methods according to an embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 4 shows a vehicle according to an embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 5 shows display devices for a vehicle according to an embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 6 schematically shows a method for receiving vehicle information according to an embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 7 shows processing of decoded code information according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0028] Fig. Figure 2 schematically shows an optical unidirectional communication between a vehicle 20 and a mobile terminal 21. The mobile terminal 21 is, for example, a mobile phone, such as a so-called smartphone, or a workshop diagnostic device. The operation of the unidirectional communication is explained below with reference to Fig. 3 will be described in detail. In step 31, vehicle information is determined in the vehicle 20. In step 32, optical code information is generated based on the vehicle information. The optical code information is, for example, a QR code 23. The QR code 23 is generated using an encoding method based on digital information 22 representing the vehicle information. The QR code generated in step 32 is displayed on a display unit of the vehicle 20 in step 33. The mobile device 21 has a capture device, for example, a digital camera. Using the capture device, the mobile device 21 captures the QR code 23 in step 34. In step 35, the mobile device 21 decodes the thus captured QR code and recovers the digital information 22 from the QR code. The vehicle information represented by the digital information 22 is processed in the mobile device 21 in step 36.

[0029] Fig. 4 shows a possible arrangement of the mobile device 21 in the vehicle 20 during the scanning of the QR code. The vehicle 20 has a display device 41 and a processing unit 42. The processing unit 42 is coupled to the display device 41 and determines the vehicle information to be output. Using a coding method, the processing unit 42 generates the QR code 23 and displays the QR code on the display device 41. The mobile terminal 21 is positioned by a driver of the vehicle in the vicinity of the display device 41 such that the scanning device of the mobile device 21 can record the QR code 23 displayed on the display device 41. The display device 41 can be provided, for example, in a dashboard of the vehicle or in an instrument cluster of the vehicle. Fig. 5 shows a corresponding arrangement of a display device 41A in a dashboard, for example in the area of the center console, and a display device 41B in an instrument cluster between round instruments 51, 52 of the vehicle 20.

[0030] In Fig. 6 shows the capture of the QR code and further processing of the vehicle information. Prerequisites are the display device 41 in the vehicle 20 and the mobile terminal 21 with a suitable application for capturing and processing the QR code output by the vehicle 20. In a camera mode of the mobile device 21, the captured QR code is shown on a display of the mobile terminal 21, as shown in the screen output 61 of the Fig. 6. By actuating an operating element of the mobile terminal 21, a user of the mobile terminal 21 initiates the capture and processing of the QR code. The QR code is captured by the capture device and decoded by the mobile device 21 using a decoding algorithm. The decoded vehicle information can be output, for example, directly or in a graphical format as output 62 on the mobile terminal 21. In this case, several vehicle data items transmitted by the vehicle, for example, historical data series, can be displayed together, as shown schematically, for example, in output 63.

[0031] Fig.Figure 7 shows additional processing of the vehicle information using a data server 71, with which the mobile device 21 can be connected, for example, via a radio connection. The server 71 can be used to collect data from the mobile device or to further process the data.

[0032] The use of the transmission of vehicle information using the QR code can, for example, be used to transmit position data and route data. Furthermore, information from a logbook or a journey history can be transmitted. With the help of the server 71, for example, a link to an online travel guide can be created. Furthermore, vehicle-specific information such as a transmission setting such as ECO, Sport, Offroad, Travel or Leisure as well as data from a hybrid electric vehicle or a battery-powered electric vehicle can be transmitted to the mobile device and visualized there. Furthermore, the use of communication via QR code can be used to create a link to radio stations for track lists, lyrics and background information. In the case of vehicles from a car rental or car sharing company, vehicle tracking information or activations can be transmitted.Vehicle diagnostic information can also be transmitted via the QR code, enabling vehicle diagnostics or remote vehicle diagnostics to be performed in or outside of a workshop. It is also possible to operate online payment systems using vehicle-specific information transmitted via the QR code. For example, the QR code can contain a vehicle identification number and a parking time, allowing this information to be used to pay a parking fee. Tolls can also be paid for bridges, tunnels, or highways.

[0033] By using the QR code to transmit vehicle information to a mobile device, cost-neutral communication can be realized between a display system installed in the vehicle and the mobile device. This eliminates the need for data coupling and data transmission devices, such as radio or wired connections. Furthermore, a variety of different mobile devices can record vehicle information, provided the mobile devices have an appropriate recording device, such as a camera. The unidirectional optical transmission ensures a high level of security against eavesdropping by an attacker. Since the unidirectional connection does not include a return channel, tampering with the vehicle via this connection channel can be effectively prevented.
