AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing turbochargers face challenges in providing sufficient lubrication to the rolling elements with thin-fluid lubricants and lower lubricant pressures, leading to high loads, repeated wear, and increased noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), which can result in functional failures.

Method used

A storage housing group for a turbocharger with a specific geometry of supply grooves and cross holes that ensures adequate lubricant distribution to the rolling elements, even with thin-fluid lubricants, using a combination of constant and extended radial sections in the supply groove surface and an inner radius configuration to facilitate smooth movement and form thin-layer dampers.

Benefits of technology

The solution effectively reduces high loads and wear, minimizing NVH and preventing functional failures by ensuring consistent lubrication to the rolling elements, thereby enhancing the durability and performance of the turbocharger.

Abstract

Bearing housing assembly (10) for a turbocharger (12), wherein the bearing housing assembly (10) comprises: a bearing housing (14) extending along an axis (A) and comprising, a transverse bore surface (16) extending along the axis (A) and defining a transverse bore (18) for receiving a lubricant, a feed groove surface (20) which defines and has a feed groove (22) in fluid connection with the transverse bore (18), a constant radial section (24) extending circumferentially around most of the axis (A) and having a first groove radius (GR1) that is constant along most of the axis (A), and an extended radial section (26) extending circumferentially from the constant radial section (24) around the axis (A) and having a second groove radius (GR2) that is larger than the first groove radius (GR1), and an interior surface (28) with an inner radius (IR) that is smaller than the first groove radius (GR1), wherein the interior surface (28) defines an interior space (30) that is in fluid communication with the feed groove (22); and a bearing assembly (32) which is arranged inside the bearing housing (14), wherein the bearing assembly (32) includes, an outer ring (34) extending along the axis (A) and having a receiving groove surface (36) that defines a receiving groove (38) in fluid communication with the feed groove (22); and an inner ring (40) which is radially spaced inwards from the outer ring (34); and a rolling element (42) which is arranged between the outer ring (34) and the inner ring (40).
