AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Distributed radar antenna structures in vehicle radar systems face significant computational challenges due to varying signal propagation times and non-linear phase terms, which complicate coherent integration and increase computing power requirements for Doppler processing.

Method used

The system transmits radar signals in two disjoint frequency ranges using a linearly monotonically varying signal segment (chirps) and employs a uniform linear antenna array with synchronized chirps to simplify coherent integration and Doppler processing by assigning tolerance ranges to distance determinations, allowing for reduced computational effort.

Benefits of technology

This approach significantly enhances the signal-to-noise ratio and simplifies the processing of echo information, reducing the computational load required for determining relative velocities and distances in vehicle radar systems.

Abstract

The invention relates to vehicle radar systems (100) with a distributed antenna structure (320) and the evaluation of radar signals from such a vehicle radar system (100) for environmental detection. In particular, it is proposed that the distributed antenna structure (320) comprises a further transmitting antenna and a plurality of further receiving antennas, wherein the plurality of the further receiving antennas are arranged in a uniform linear array (330), and wherein the further transmitting antenna is provided to continuously emit a further radar signal with a sequence of chirps in a further frequency range that is different from the one frequency range in which the other transmitting antennas emit chirps as radar signals at a time offset, the radar echo signals of which are received by the other receiving antennas. The additional echo signals detected in the wider frequency range are used to derive distances to objects and determine their relative velocities. These velocities are then assigned to objects for which the same distance was determined within a tolerance range based on the echo signals detected in the first frequency band. The invention further relates to the described evaluation method.
