[0017] Referring to the drawings, the Fig. 1 illustrates an exemplary embodiment of a lawn and garden tool constituting a hedge trimmer assembly 100 according to aspects of the present disclosure. The hedge trimmer assembly 100 includes a housing 102 on which a motor and drive accessories (not shown) are positioned to operate a blade assembly 110. User interfaces 104, 106, such as handles, are arranged and configured to facilitate a user in grasping, operating, and articulately moving the hedge trimmer assembly 100, as may be generally understood in the art. A power articulated interface 108, such as a button or trigger, is attached to the housing 102 and / or one or more of the user interfaces 104, 106 and configured to allow the user to selectively provide power to operate the blade assembly 110.A wall 109 may be positioned between the housing 102 and the blade assembly 110, for example, to form a guard that may form a barrier between the user (or a portion of the user, such as the user's hands) and the blade assembly 110, as may be generally understood in the art.
[0018] The blade assembly 110 is attached to the housing 102 and extends from the housing 102, for example, along a longitudinal direction L. The blade assembly 110 may generally include one or more blade components 114, which may, for example, form a first and a second blade, or an articulated member and a stationary member, or a pair of articulated members. A member 112 extends from the housing 102 and may generally form a structural or rigid blunt body extension along which the blade component(s) 114 are supported, for example, along the longitudinal direction L. An end guard 107 may be positioned at a distal end of the blade assembly 110. The end guard 107 may at least partially obscure a portion of the blade assembly 110 distal to the housing 102, for example, to provide a barrier between the blade component(s) 114 and objects, items, etc. beyond the hedge trimmer assembly 100.
[0019] Referring to the Fig. 2-17, embodiments of components, tools, and methods for assembly according to aspects of the present disclosure are provided. The blade assembly 110 includes one or more blade components 114, such as a plurality of teeth or cutting elements, distributed along the longitudinal direction L. The blade component 114 defines a slot or opening 115 through which a fastener 120 is extendable. A wall-forming retainer 130 includes a retainer opening 132 through which the fastener 120 is extendable. The retainer 130 is positioned on the blade component 114 between the blade component 114 and a spine member 140. The back member 140 forms a wall that includes a first back member opening 142 and a second back member opening 144 extending from the opening 142.The second opening 144 forms a narrower cross-sectional opening compared to the first opening 142, such as a narrower cross-sectional opening along a width direction W perpendicular to the longitudinal direction L.
[0020] In various embodiments, one or more of the openings 115, 132, 142 extend in a direction parallel to an extension of the blade component 114, such as along the longitudinal direction L. In still various embodiments, the holder 130 and the back member 140 are stackable on the blade component 114 (e.g., along the height H), as further described herein.
[0021] With reference to the Fig. 4-5, the fastening element 120 extends through the first spine opening 142, for example, during stacking of the spine 140 onto the holder 130. The openings 142, 144 are positioned to allow a user to articulate the blade component 114 along a first direction (e.g., first direction 91 along the longitudinal direction L) or articulate the spine 140 along a second direction (e.g., second direction 92 opposite to the first direction 91 along the longitudinal direction L), or both, to allow an extension of the fastening element 120 through the spine 140 from the first opening 142 (in the Fig. 4 in a first position) into the second opening 144 (in the Fig. 5 in a second position). The narrower cross-sectional area at the opening 144 may form an interference fit, interference fit, or other type of frictional fit to hold the blade component 114, the holder 130, and the back member 140 together by means of the fastener 120.
[0022] Referring to the Fig. 6A-6C provide views of one embodiment of the fastener 120. Embodiments of the fastener 120 include a base wall 126 from which a tab 123 extends along the height direction H perpendicular to the length direction L and width direction W. The tab 123 includes a base portion 128 connected to the base wall 126. A neck 122 extends from the base portion 128. A wing 124 extends from the neck 122.
[0023] In various embodiments, the neck 122 forms a narrower cross-section along the width direction W than the base portion 128. The wing 124 extends from the neck 122 along the width direction W. In some embodiments, the wing 124 extends further along the width direction W than the neck 122.
[0024] In still some embodiments, the base portion 128 may extend along the height direction H, which corresponds to a thickness along the height direction H of the holder 130 and the height of the opening 115. Briefly referring to the perspective and detailed views of an embodiment of the holder 130 in the Fig. 7A-7B, the retainer opening 132 may include a notch 134 extending along the longitudinal direction L from a central portion forming the retainer opening 132. The notch 134 may correspond in cross-sectional area to the neck 122 on the fastener 120. In still some embodiments, the notch 134 extends from the retainer opening 132 along the first direction 91, the second direction 92, or both. During assembly, as described herein and generally in the Fig. 2-5, a portion of the fastener 120, such as the neck 122, may extend into the notch 134 such that the holding, alignment, or interlocking of components of the blade assembly 114 with one another may be facilitated.
[0025] With reference to the Fig. 7A-7B, in various embodiments, the holder 130 may form a wall on which a plurality of holder openings 132 are positioned corresponding to a plurality of fasteners 120. The holder 130 may form a wall extending along the longitudinal direction L, on which the plurality of holder openings 132 are distributed along the longitudinal direction L. In still some embodiments, the holder 130 forms a unitary, monolithic component, such as a bar, a sheet, or a stamping.
[0026] Referring to the Fig. 8A, Fig. 8B, a perspective view and a detailed view of one embodiment of the back member 140 are provided. In various embodiments, the back member 140 may form a wall on which a plurality of back member openings 142, 144 are positioned corresponding to the plurality of fastening elements 120. The back member 140 may form a wall extending along the longitudinal direction L, on which the plurality of back member openings 142, 144 are distributed along the longitudinal direction L. The second back member opening 144 extends from the first back member opening 142 along the longitudinal direction L. For example, the second back member opening 144 may extend from a respective first back member opening 142 along the longitudinal direction L along the first direction 91, the second direction 92, or both.
[0027] Still referring to the Fig. 8A-8B and beyond to the Fig. 9, in some embodiments, the back member 140 includes a first surface 147 through which the back member openings 142, 144 are formed such that at least a portion of the fastener 120 can extend along the height direction H through the first surface 147. For example, the first back member opening 142 is formed through the first surface 147 to allow the neck 122 to extend through the opening 142. The second back member opening 144 is formed through the first surface 147 and extends from the first back member opening 142. The narrower cross-sectional width of the second back member opening 144 can retain the neck 122 of the fastener 120 to the back member 140. In some embodiments, the wing 124 ( Fig. 6A-6C) of the fastener 120 is configured to extend along the width direction W to prevent removal of the fastener 120 through the second spine opening 144. In still some embodiments, the wing 124 extends farther along the width direction W than the second spine opening 144 or in addition to the notch 134 to retain the spine 140 to the holder 130 and the blade component 114.
[0028] In still some embodiments, a ramp 125 ( Fig. 6A-6C) from the wing 124 along the height direction H toward the base wall 126. The ramp 125 is configured to promote a frictional fit, such as an interference fit or interference fit, of the fastener 120 to the back member 140 when the fastener 120 is pivotally moved into the second back member opening 144. For example, the ramp 125 may extend along the height direction H to rub, touch, or contact the first surface 147 of the back member 140.
[0029] Referring to the Fig. 8A-8B and beyond to the Fig. 9, in some embodiments, the backing member 140 includes the first surface 147, a second surface 145, and a cavity 149 formed therebetween. The second surface 145 may conceal an upper portion of the fastener 120, such as the wing 124. The wing 124 of the fastener 120 may be positioned within the cavity 149 between the first and second surfaces 145, 147.
[0030] Referring to the Fig. 9-10, embodiments of the back member 140 and the member 112 are provided. In some embodiments, the member 112 includes a bar or plate 117 that extends in the same direction as the blade component 114. A member opening 111 may be formed corresponding to a rib 141 extending from the back member 140. A plurality of ribs 141 may be distributed along the longitudinal direction L. A gap or recess 143 may be formed between pairs of ribs 141. A plurality of member openings 111 may be formed on the member 112 corresponding to the plurality of ribs 141. When assembled, the ribs 141 may extend into the openings 111 and hook or snap onto the member 112. The ribs 141 may form a retaining feature to at least partially connect the back member 140 to the member 112.
[0031] Briefly back to the Fig. 7A and Fig. 8A and further examination of the cross-sectional side view in the Fig. 11, the holder 130 and the back element 140 may form openings 136, 138, 146, 148 at which the holder 130 and the back element 140 may be connected to the housing 102 ( Fig. 1) of the hedge trimmer assembly 100. The openings 136, 146 may form proximal end openings at which the holder 130 and the back member 140 are coupled to the housing 102 ( Fig. 1). The openings 138, 148 may form distal end openings to which the end guard 107 may be attached. In various embodiments, the member 112, the blade component 114, or both may have openings corresponding to the openings 136, 146 or the openings 138, 148 to which the blade assembly 110 may be attached to the member 112.
[0032] With reference to the Fig. 11, in some embodiments, a fastener 150 may extend through member 112, spine member 140, retainer 130, and blade component 114. For example, a threaded shaft 152 may extend through openings on member 112, spine member 140, retainer 130, blade component 114, or combinations thereof to secure blade assembly 110 to member 112.
