The present invention relates to cutting tools, in particular, to control systems for cutters such as vegetation cutters, especially hedge cutters or trimmers (10). Hedge cutters (10) frequently suffer in use from a problem of blocked cutting blades when they encounter a twig or branch whose size or density exceeds the capacity of the blades. We describe a vegetation cutting apparatus (10) having a plurality of cutting blades (11,12), at least one of which blades (11,12) is drivable by an electric motor. At least one driven blade (11,12) is movable between two predefined points of maximum travel. The apparatus (10) includes a control mechanism which causes a change of direction in the movement of the at least one movable blade at a point intermediate the points of maximum travel in response to an event sensed by the control mechanism.

An elongated pole pruner for cutting and trimming trees, bushes and the like having three separable sections, that when assembled, form an extended length pruner. The pole pruner includes a first section containing a handle and battery pack, a second extension section, and a third section that contains the purner itself. Each of the sections contains an electrical conductor that is attached to corresponding conductor in an adjacent pole sections via a male plug and female receptacle. In this way, the battery pack in the first section of the pole is able to deliver power through the second section to the pruner in the third section.

A self-propelled forage harvester includes an overload clutch inserted into the driveline of a crop conveying element of crop pick-up arrangement of the harvesting machine. The overload clutch generates acoustic and/or mechanical vibrations when a defined torque is exceeded, and a knock sensor is provided for sensing when the overload clutch is operating in an overloaded condition. The knock sensor sends a signal to a control arrangement including a signal processor which recognizes a vibration pattern representative of an overload, and in response to such a pattern, sends a control signal for shutting off the drive to various driven components of the harvester.

A pair of pruning shears has two bodies pivotally mounted together with a pivot, a spring connected between the bodies, and a lock device arranged near the pivot. The lock device comprises a step hole defined in one of the bodies near the pivot, a locking hole defined in the other body, a latch post moveably mounted in the step hole, a biasing member to support the latch post, and a knob. The knob is rotatably mounted on the body with the step hole. The knob has a bottom abutting the latch post and a cavity defined in the bottom. When the bodies are pushed toward to each other, the step hole will align with the locking hole. The latch post can be pushed to engage with the locking hole by the bottom of the knob. This can provide a secure positioning effect to the latch post. The latch post will not escape from the locking hole when the pruning shears bump with another object.

A portable leaf grinding device (PLGD 10) that is used to grind a substance such as a plurality of compacted leaves into a multiplicity of leaf particles. The PLGD (10) consists of a circular cap (12), a cone-shaped hollow structure (84) that is releaseably attached to the cap (12), and a container (102) that is also attached to the cap (12). The circular cap (12) has attached an upper grinding disk (42) having a plurality of downward-extending leaf grinding blades (58). The upper grinding disk (42) interacts with a lower grinding disk (62) which is attached to the structure (84) and which also includes a plurality of upward-extending grinding blades (72) and a plurality of bores (74). When the circular cap (12) is rotated, the blades on the two grinding disks (46,62) interact with each other to produce the multiplicity leaf particles. A pill crusher has an arm extending over and along an elongate base, with a pivotal connection between the base and one end of the arm. An upwardly open cylindrical housing on the base has a longitudinal axis perpendicular to the base and a compression spring in the cylindrical housing between a cylindrical anvil member and the base.
