Abstract
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to a method for monitoring the preparation of milk foam or hot milk in a coffee machine. The invention further relates to a coffee machine that is configured / programmed to carry out this method.
[0002] It is known from the prior art to monitor milk processing in coffee machines for the preparation of milk foam and hot milk using an acoustic sensor, checking various quality characteristics such as foam consistency, temperature, cavitation noise, and the like. The flow behavior of the milk foam or hot milk into a container can also be monitored acoustically. In this way, problems in the preparation process can be detected and, if necessary, appropriate countermeasures can be taken.
[0003] Such a procedure is described, for example, in WO 2017 / 003 288 A1.
[0004] However, a disadvantage of such conventional methods is that acoustic monitoring takes place continuously throughout the entire preparation period. This means, firstly, that temporary background noises are also recorded, which overlay the acoustic signature of the process parameters actually being monitored, rendering the relevant measurement data only partially usable or even completely unusable for evaluation.
[0005] Regardless, continuous acoustic monitoring of the preparation process generates a significant amount of measurement data for further processing, evaluation, and temporary storage. This increases the effort required for acoustic monitoring, which in turn reduces the efficiency of the monitoring process.
[0006] It is therefore an object of the present invention to create an improved method for acoustically awakening the preparation of milk foam or hot milk in a coffee machine, in which the aforementioned disadvantages are partially, ideally even completely, eliminated.
[0007] This problem is solved according to the invention by the subject matter of the independent claims. Advantageous embodiments are the subject matter of the dependent claims.
[0008] The basic idea of the present invention is therefore to monitor the preparation of milk foam or hot milk in a coffee machine acoustically not over the entire preparation period, but only over a part of this preparation period – hereinafter referred to as the partial period. In this way, the amount of measurement data to be recorded can be significantly reduced. In particular, it is possible to record only during those phases of the preparation period in which the recording of the noises characterizing the preparation process is not impaired or even prevented by background noise.
[0009] Noises characteristic of the preparation process can include, for example, sounds produced during frothing—especially when hot milk is mixed with steam—and during the heating of the milk to hot milk. These noises can also include cavitation sounds that occur during the preparation of the hot milk or milk foam. Such cavitation sounds can occur particularly when fresh water evaporates into steam, which is then mixed with the heated fresh milk to create milk foam. Noises produced when water or steam mixes with hot milk can also be included in the acoustic monitoring. Finally, noises produced when filling a container with the milk foam or hot milk generated by the coffee machine can also be monitored. Finally, noises that occur when milk is drawn from a milk reservoir in the coffee machine or provided externally for preparation can also be monitored acoustically.
[0010] These disturbances, which do not directly characterize the preparation process, could be, for example, operating noises from certain components - especially a water pump - of the coffee machine.
[0011] The method according to the invention serves to monitor the preparation of milk foam or hot milk in a coffee machine. The preparation process extends over a preparation period; that is, the milk foam or hot milk is prepared during this period. According to the invention, the preparation period comprises at least one monitoring interval during which the preparation is acoustically monitored, and at least one non-monitoring interval during which the acoustic monitoring is interrupted. In other words, the acoustic monitoring does not occur continuously throughout the entire preparation period, but only intermittently or in segments. Thus, at least during the preparation period, there is at least one interval during which no acoustic monitoring of the preparation takes place.
[0012] In a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the coffee machine generates background noise during the non-monitoring interval. Thus, the method according to the invention prevents background noise generated by the coffee machine from negatively affecting the acoustic monitoring.
[0013] According to an advantageous further development, the disturbing noises are periodically generated by a water pump of the coffee machine, which operates in a pulsed manner when switched on, to pump fresh water.
[0014] Particularly preferably, the periodic noises can occur immediately after the coffee machine is switched on, during a so-called settling-in period. This period is followed by an operating period in which the water pump no longer generates any noise. Thus, continuous monitoring in the form of a quasi-permanent monitoring interval can follow the settling-in process, during which the brewing process is continuously monitored acoustically. According to the invention, the settling-in process can be divided into several successive monitoring intervals and non-monitoring intervals, during which the acoustic monitoring takes place or is interrupted.
[0015] Particularly advantageous is the ability to conduct acoustic monitoring during the dispensing of milk foam or hot milk, thus allowing the preparation of the milk foam or hot milk to be monitored.
[0016] In a preferred embodiment, the acoustic monitoring comprises recording noises characteristic of the milk foam or hot milk preparation process using an acoustic sensor device in the coffee machine. These noises can be characteristic of the preparation process and can include, for example, sounds generated during frothing—particularly when hot milk is mixed with steam—and during the heating of the milk. These noises can also include cavitation noises that occur during the preparation of the hot milk or milk foam. Such cavitation noises can occur, in particular, when fresh water evaporates into steam, which is then mixed with the heated fresh milk to create milk foam. The monitoring can also include noises generated when water or steam is mixed with milk.It is also possible to monitor noises that occur when filling a container with the milk foam or hot milk produced by the coffee machine. Finally, it is possible to monitor noises that occur when milk is drawn from a milk reservoir, either integrated into the coffee machine or externally.
[0017] Particularly advantageous is the ability to evaluate the recorded sounds and, in particular, to compare them with stored reference data or reference sounds.
[0018] For evaluation, a computer model, in particular one of the following AI models, can be used: Recurrent Neuronal Networks (RNN), Long Short Term Memory (LSTM), Autoencoder, Variational Autoencoder (VAE), Convolutional Neuronal Networks (CNN), Random Forest, Ada Boost, Explainable Boosting Machine (EBM).
[0019] According to an advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention, the preparation process can be adapted, and in particular controlled, depending on the result of the evaluation. Specifically, the preparation process can be terminated if the evaluation of the listed noises indicates that they deviate too much from the aforementioned reference noises or data.
[0020] It is particularly preferred that acoustic monitoring is omitted during certain events or periods of the preparation process if these events or periods generate disruptive noise. This is the case, for example, when fresh water is heated with an electric heating device. It is therefore particularly preferred that acoustic monitoring is omitted during the aforementioned time intervals.
[0021] In another preferred variant, the monitoring interval and the non-monitoring interval can be defined before the preparation process begins. This variant proves advantageous if, for the preparation to be carried out, it is already known before the preparation begins in which time periods of the preparation process disturbances may or will occur.
[0022] According to a further advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention, the timing of at least one monitoring interval and / or non-monitoring interval can be dynamically determined, and in particular adjusted, during the preparation process.
[0023] The preparation period can preferably consist of a plurality of alternating monitoring intervals and non-monitoring intervals. In particular, the monitoring intervals and the non-monitoring intervals can alternate periodically, so that a clocked acoustic monitoring of the preparation is particularly preferably implemented.
[0024] The invention further relates to a coffee machine, in particular a fully automatic coffee machine, for preparing a hot coffee beverage containing milk foam or hot milk. The coffee machine comprises a grinder for grinding coffee beans into coffee powder. Furthermore, the coffee machine comprises a brewing unit for brewing the hot coffee beverage from the coffee powder prepared by the grinder and from hot water. This hot water can be drawn from a water tank of the coffee machine for storing fresh water and heated by an electric heating element, which can be part of the brewing unit or connected upstream of it. The coffee machine further comprises a milk processing unit for preparing milk foam or hot milk from fresh milk.Using the milk processing device, milk, air and steam can be mixed together in a specific ratio to obtain the desired milk foam or hot milk.
[0025] Furthermore, the coffee machine according to the invention comprises an acoustic sensor device, in particular for acoustically monitoring the preparation of the milk foam or hot milk. The acoustic sensor device can be or include a microphone for detecting airborne sound. This allows the noises generated by the milk processing device during the preparation process to be distinguished for evaluation.
[0026] Furthermore, the coffee machine comprises a control / regulation device that interacts with the acoustic sensor device and is configured / programmed to carry out the aforementioned inventive method. The advantages of the inventive method explained above are therefore transferred to the inventive coffee machine. The control / regulation device preferably includes an evaluation device by means of which the measurement data recorded by the sensor device and transmitted to the control / regulation device can be evaluated.
[0027] In a preferred embodiment of the coffee machine according to the invention, the acoustic sensor device has a directional characteristic directed towards the milk processing unit. This ensures that the noises relevant for monitoring are recorded with high sensitivity, while at the same time, background noises irrelevant for monitoring are effectively suppressed.
[0028] According to an advantageous further development, the control / regulation device can comprise a printed circuit board on which electronic components are arranged. In this further development, the acoustic sensor device or microphone is arranged on the printed circuit board. This variant can be implemented with particularly low technical effort, since the necessary communication link between the sensor device and the evaluation device is located on the printed circuit board that forms part of the control / regulation device. This results in considerable cost advantages in the manufacture of the coffee machine.
[0029] The coffee machine can be equipped to dispense milk foam. This can be done, in particular, via a spout. Alternatively, a process step can be incorporated in which the milk foam is dispensed. This eliminates the need to pre-fill a cup or milk jug with the correct amount of milk, as is the case with milk foam production using a steam wand; instead, ready-made milk foam can be dispensed directly. In particular, the dispensing of the milk foam can be monitored during the preparation process, for example, with regard to various quality characteristics such as foam consistency, dispensing temperature, cavitation noises during the process, flow behavior into a cup (e.g., whether flow interruptions occur), or even whether milk is being drawn in at all. This allows for the identification and implementation of measures or steps to optimize the dispensing process.
[0030] In another advantageous embodiment, the acoustic sensor device is arranged in the area of an outlet of the coffee machine for dispensing the milk foam or hot milk. With this embodiment, noises generated in the area of the outlet can be recorded with particular precision, and the negative impact of background noise on the recording can be minimized. A further outlet can be provided for dispensing the hot coffee beverage brewed in the brewing chamber. According to an alternative embodiment, however, a single outlet can be provided for dispensing both the milk foam or hot milk and the brewed hot coffee beverage.
[0031] The invention further relates to a computer program [product] comprising commands that, during the execution of the program by a control / regulation device, in particular that of the coffee machine described above, cause the control / regulation device to carry out the steps of the method described herein, i.e., the method according to the invention, optionally also with corresponding further developments. This allows the aforementioned advantages to be utilized even in coffee machines that have already been produced or even sold. For example, coffee machines already delivered with corresponding features but without corresponding programming can be easily improved by providing the appropriate commands, e.g., via a firmware update or a corresponding app using an internet connection. This also allows for a particularly sustainable solution to the aforementioned task.
[0032] Further important features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the dependent claims, the drawings and the associated description of the figures based on the drawings.
[0033] It is understood that the features mentioned above and those to be explained below can be used not only in the combinations specified, but also in other combinations or individually, without departing from the scope of the present invention. The components of a higher-level unit, such as a device, apparatus, or arrangement, mentioned above and those to be mentioned below, which are designated separately, can form separate parts or components of this unit or be integral areas or sections of this unit, even if this is depicted differently in the drawings.
[0034] Preferred embodiments of the invention are shown in the drawings and are explained in more detail in the following description, wherein identical reference numerals refer to identical or similar or functionally identical components.
[0035] They show, schematically: Fig. 1 by way of example the construction of a coffee machine according to the invention, Fig. 2 a diagram illustrating the method according to the invention by way of example, Fig. 3. A diagram illustrating the division of the preparation process into monitoring intervals and non-monitoring intervals.
[0036] The Fig. Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of the structure of a coffee machine 1 according to the invention for preparing a hot coffee beverage KHG containing milk foam MS or hot milk HM. The coffee machine 1 can be designed as a fully automatic coffee machine 1a.
[0037] The coffee machine 1 includes a grinder 2 for grinding coffee beans KB into ground coffee KP. Furthermore, the coffee machine includes a brewing unit 3 for brewing and preparing the hot coffee beverage KHG from the ground coffee KP prepared by the grinder 2 and hot water HW generated by the coffee machine 1. This hot water HW can be drawn from a water tank 9 of the coffee machine 1 and heated by an electric heating element 8, which can be part of the brewing unit 3 or, alternatively, connected upstream of it.
[0038] Furthermore, the coffee machine 1 includes a milk processing unit 4 for preparing milk foam MS or hot milk HM from fresh milk FM. The coffee machine 1 may also have an outlet 5 for dispensing the milk foam MS or hot milk HM prepared in the milk processing unit 4.
[0039] Fresh milk (FM) can be introduced into the milk processing unit 4 from the outside via a milk inlet 17. The milk processing unit 4 includes an electric heating element 14 for heating the supplied fresh milk (FM) to hot milk (HM). This hot milk (HM) can be dispensed via the outlet 5. If milk foam (MS) is to be produced instead of hot milk (HM), fresh water (WF), which is pumped from the water tank 9 into the milk processing unit 4 by a water pump 13, can be evaporated to steam (WD) using the heating element 14. This steam (WD) is then mixed with the hot milk (HM) and air (L) in a mixing chamber 18 of the milk processing unit 4, thus preparing the desired milk foam (MS). The milk foam (MS) can also then be dispensed from the coffee machine 1 via the outlet 5.Using the milk processing unit 4, the hot milk HM, the steam WD and air L can be mixed together in a predetermined ratio to produce the desired milk foam MS or the desired hot milk HM.
[0040] A further outlet 12 can be provided for dispensing the hot coffee beverage KHG brewed and prepared in brewing chamber 3. In one variant, however, a common outlet can be provided for dispensing both the milk foam or hot milk and the prepared hot coffee beverage (in Fig. 1 not shown).
[0041] Furthermore, the coffee machine 1 includes an acoustic sensor device 6 for acoustically monitoring the preparation of the milk foam MS or the hot milk HM. The acoustic sensor device 6 includes a microphone 7 for detecting airborne sound, the directional characteristic of which is directed towards the milk processing unit 4. Thus, noises generated by the milk processing unit 4 during the preparation process ZV can be detected and recorded.
[0042] The acoustic sensor device 6 can be arranged in the area of the outlet 5 as shown. This allows noises G occurring in the area of the outlet 5 to be recorded with particular precision.
[0043] Furthermore, the coffee machine 1 comprises a control / regulation device 10 that interacts with the acoustic sensor device 6 and is configured and programmed to carry out the method according to the invention. The control / regulation device 10 can be connected to the sensor device 6 for data transmission, so that measurement data generated by the sensor device 6 can be transmitted to the control / regulation device 10 for further processing and evaluation. For this purpose, the control / regulation device 10 can have an evaluation device 15 by means of which the measurement data recorded by the sensor device 6 and transmitted to the control / regulation device 10 can be evaluated. The control / regulation device 10 can comprise a printed circuit board 11 on which electronic components 16 are arranged.
[0044] Alternatively or in addition to the above-proposed arrangement of the sensor device 6 at the outlet 5, the acoustic sensor device 6 or the microphone 7 can be arranged as shown in Fig. 1 also indicated - also arranged on the circuit board 11 of the control / regulating device 10.
[0045] The following process is described using a flowchart. Fig. 2 and the time diagram of the Fig. 3 the method according to the invention is explained by way of example.
[0046] The procedure is used to monitor the preparation of milk foam (MS) and hot milk (HM) in a coffee machine (1). The preparation process (Z) or the preparation procedure (ZV) is carried out according to... Fig. 3 over a preparation period T, during which the milk foam MS or the hot milk HM is prepared in the milk processing unit 4.
[0047] In the method according to the invention, said preparation Z is acoustically monitored during a first step a) of the method only for a portion of the total preparation period T. In other words, the acoustic monitoring does not take place continuously over the entire preparation period T, but only intermittently or in segments.
[0048] The acoustic monitoring of the preparation Z or the preparation process ZV includes a recording of noises G (see Fig. 1) by means of the acoustic sensor device 6 or the microphone 7 of the coffee machine 1. These sounds G can be transmitted as measurement data to the control / regulation device 10 or the evaluation device 16 as part of measure a). This measurement data M represents sound or sound waves which were generated during the preparation Z or the preparation process ZV and recorded by the sensor device 6 or microphone 7. In this way, various process parameters of the preparation process ZV can be monitored, as these depend on the process parameters.
[0049] In a second step b) of the inventive method, the recorded noises G are evaluated. The preparation Z or the preparation process ZV can then be adjusted depending on the result E of this evaluation, i.e., ZV = ZV(E).
[0050] In particular, a control R of the preparation process ZV can be implemented in this way, in which at least one process parameter of the preparation process ZV, such as the setting of the temperature when heating the fresh milk FM to hot milk HM or when evaporating the fresh water FW to steam WD, is controlled.
[0051] It is also conceivable that the preparation process ZV is aborted if the recorded sounds G deviate too much from the stored reference sounds. In the event of such an abort A, it is also optionally conceivable to generate an error signal F.
[0052] The diagram of Fig. Figure 3 shows that the preparation period T consists of several alternating monitoring intervals l1 and non-monitoring intervals l2. Preferably, as shown in the diagram of the Fig. Figure 3 shows that monitoring intervals l1 and non-monitoring intervals l2 follow each other periodically. In this way, advantageous clocked acoustic monitoring of the preparation process ZV can be implemented. The sequence of monitoring intervals l1 and non-monitoring intervals l2 can be set such that the coffee machine only generates noise during the non-monitoring intervals l2, but not during the monitoring intervals l1. This prevents noise generated by the coffee machine 1 from negatively affecting the acoustic monitoring of the preparation Z.
[0053] This proves particularly advantageous when said disturbances are periodically generated by the water pump 13 of the coffee machine 1, which operates in a pulsed manner when switched on (see below). Fig. 1) to be used for the production of fresh water (FW).
[0054] Periodic noise generated by water pump 13 can occur, particularly immediately after switching on the coffee machine 1, during a so-called settling period ESV, in which the periodic noise occurs and which is followed by an operating period BZR in which water pump 13 does not generate any noise. Thus, continuous monitoring in the form of a quasi-“permanent” monitoring interval l1 (see...) can follow the settling process. Fig. 3) connect, in which the preparation can be acoustically monitored without interruption.
[0055] The transient process ESV can be described as in Fig.Figure 3 shows the system divided into several successive monitoring intervals l1 and non-monitoring intervals l2, during which acoustic monitoring takes place or is interrupted. During the non-monitoring intervals l2, the water pump 13 generates disturbance noise; this is not the case during the monitoring intervals l1.
[0056] In another example (not shown), acoustic monitoring can also take place during the dispensing of milk foam (MS) or hot milk (HM), thereby monitoring the preparation of the milk foam (MS) or hot milk (HV). A monitoring interval l1 is thus defined during the dispensing of the milk foam (MS) or hot milk (HM).
