AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing turbochargers face issues where a decline in bearing performance can lead to unstable support of the rotary shaft, increasing runout and potential contact between the shaft and surrounding parts, risking operational disruption.

Method used

Incorporation of a main bearing and an auxiliary bearing system, where the auxiliary bearing supports the rotary shaft when the main bearing fails, using wear-resistant materials and oil grooves to maintain stable rotation and prevent contact with surrounding components.

Benefits of technology

Ensures continuous operation by preventing contact between the rotary shaft and surrounding parts even when the main bearing deteriorates, reducing wear and maintaining efficient operation through the use of auxiliary bearings and lubrication systems.

Claims

[1] Turbocharger (1) with: a rotating shaft (41) having a turbine wheel (42) and a compressor impeller (43); a main bearing (21) in contact with an oil portion of the rotary shaft (41) where lubricating oil is retained to rotatably support the rotary shaft (41); and an auxiliary bearing (45) in contact with the oil area for rotatably supporting the rotating shaft (41) when the main bearing (21) is unable to support the rotating shaft (41). [2] Turbocharger (1) according to claim 1 further comprising: a shaft seal (44) defining the oil area, wherein the auxiliary bearing (45) is arranged between the main bearing (21) and the shaft seal (44) in an axial direction of the rotary shaft (41). [3] Turbocharger (1) according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the rotary shaft (41) has an annular projection (41b) for separating the lubricating oil from the rotary shaft (41), and the auxiliary bearing (45) is arranged between the main bearing (21) and the annular projection (41b). [4] Turbocharger (1) according to claim 1, wherein a portion of the rotary shaft (41) in contact with the auxiliary bearing (45) and / or a portion of the auxiliary bearing (45) in contact with the rotary shaft (41) is made of a wear-resistant material.
