Description

[0001] This application claims priority to Chinese Patent Application No. CN202211481549.8 entitled “Separator for lithium batteries and method for manufacturing the same”, filed on November 24, 2022, the entire contents of which are incorporated into the present application by reference. TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present invention relates to the technical field of lithium batteries, in particular to a separator for lithium batteries and a method for producing the same. STATE OF THE ART

[0003] With the continuous progress of the modern electronics industry, the application range of energy storage devices is becoming ever broader. As an electrochemical energy storage device, batteries are widely used in many fields, such as portable smart devices and electric vehicles. As one of the more common batteries, lithium batteries are widely used in transportation, daily life, medicine, and even space exploration due to their advantages (e.g., high energy density, long cycle life, low self-discharge rate, no memory effect, stable discharge voltage, fast charging and discharging, and environmental friendliness), and have been widely accepted in the industry after nearly two decades of development.

[0004] The lithium battery separator is one of the most important internal components of lithium batteries. Its main function is to separate the positive and negative electrodes of the lithium battery, preventing the two electrodes from touching and thus causing a short circuit. Although the material of the lithium battery separator is non-conductive, it allows electrolyte ions to pass through. The performance of the separator determines the interfacial structure, internal resistance, etc., of the lithium battery, which directly affects the capacity, cycle life, safety performance, and other characteristics of the lithium battery. An ideal separator for lithium batteries should exhibit high ionic conductivity, good thermal stability, good chemical stability, and good electrochemical stability, while providing a high degree of wettability with electrolytes and excellent mechanical properties during repeated charging and discharging.

[0005] Currently, most commercial separators for lithium batteries are microporous polyolefin membranes made of polyethylene and / or polypropylene. Microporous polyolefin membranes feature low cost, controllable pore size, stable chemical stability, good mechanical strength, and good electrochemical stability. They also exhibit self-sealing performance at high temperatures, thus ensuring the safety performance of lithium-ion secondary batteries in everyday use. However, such separators suffer from excessive heat shrinkage and insufficient wettability with electrolytes. If the shrinkage rate is too high, a polyolefin membrane is prone to melting at high temperatures, resulting in large-scale short circuits and thermal runaway. Heat accumulation is exacerbated, creating high pressure inside the battery, leading to battery fire or explosion. On the other hand, since there are no polar groups in the polyolefin chain, the microporous polyolefin membrane exhibits low surface energy, strong inertness, and hydrophobicity. However, the electrolyte solution contains a large amount of polar components. Thus, the affinity between the two is low, increasing the battery resistance and affecting the battery's cycle performance and charge-discharge efficiency.

[0006] For example, Chinese Patent Application No. CN102367172B discloses a modified silica-polyolefin microporous separator for lithium-ion batteries, which is produced by the following method: a modified silica and a high / ultra-high molecular weight polyolefin are blended into a mixture, to which an ordinary polyolefin is added, and then granulated to obtain a modified masterbatch; the modified masterbatch is blended with the polyolefin, melt-blended, and extruded to form a membrane with a hard elastic structure; the membrane is continuously stretched and then thermally set at 100 to 150°C to obtain a microporous polyolefin separator for lithium-ion batteries. The microporous polyolefin separator for lithium-ion batteries according to this invention has a relatively thin thickness (less than 15 µm), relatively good strength (the longitudinal breaking strength is more than 100 MPa, the transverse breaking strength is about 8 MPa, and the elongation at break is 50%), and the porosity and pore structure of the membrane are adjustable (the porosity is greater than 50% and the pore size is 0.1 to 1 µm); and the membrane has a low thermal shrinkage rate (less than 5%). This invention can improve the thermal stability of the polymer; however, there is still the problem of insufficient wettability with electrolytes, which increases the battery resistance and impairs the battery's cycle performance and charge-discharge efficiency.

[0007] In this field, a separator for lithium batteries having high ionic conductivity, sufficient wettability with electrolytes, excellent aging resistance and heat resistance, and good mechanical properties, and a method for producing the same are still needed. CONTENT OF THE PRESENT INVENTION

Claims

[1] Method for producing a separator for lithium batteries, characterized by that it includes the following steps: Step S101 “Preparation of a copolymer”: Adding N-(4-cyano-3-trifluoromethylphenyl)methacrylamide, 1,3-bis(oxiranylmethyl)-5-(2-propenyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-trione, allyltriphenylphosphine bromide, 7-fluoro-5-oxo-8-(4-(2-propenyl)-1-piperazinyl)-5H-thiazolo[3,2-a]quinoline-4-carboxylic acid and an initiator to a solvent, which is then stirred and reacted in an inert gas atmosphere for 4 to 6 hours at 65 to 75°C and then subjected to precipitation in a lithium hydroxide solution with a mass fraction of 10 to 20 wt%, wherein the precipitated polymer is washed three to six times with ethanol and finally the ethanol is removed by rotary evaporation to obtain a copolymer; Step S102 "Forming a separator": uniformly mixing the copolymer prepared in step S101 with an amino-terminated hyperbranched polyimide polymer, a sulfo-terminated hyperbranched sulfonated polyaryl ether, a nano-boron fiber, a nano-calcium carbonate, and an adhesion promoter into a mixture, which is then ground and sieved through a sieve with 200 to 400 meshes per inch, and then subjected to melt extrusion and heat setting to finally obtain a separator; Step S103 “Pore Preparation”: Soaking the separator prepared in step S102 in a hydrochloric acid solution having a mass fraction of 8 to 13 wt% for 18 to 32 hours, then rinsing the separator with water until the corresponding eluent is neutral, so that a separator for lithium batteries is obtained.
