Abstract
Description
[0001] Nest boxes for great tits and blue tits are known to be constructed from wooden boards about 10 mm thick. These nest boxes typically have a round entrance hole with a diameter of about 40 mm.
[0002] However, predators with long necks or beaks—such as martens or larger birds—occasionally manage to reach the young birds from inside the box. To counteract these dangers, it is suggested to construct a cylindrical adapter in the form of a short tube that serves as an extension of the entrance hole.
[0003] This adapter has the same diameter as the entrance hole (approx. 40 mm) and is inserted directly into the hole. A length of 20 to 60 mm is recommended—ideally 40 mm to make access more difficult and better protect the young birds. Extending the entrance channel makes it significantly more difficult for predators to insert their paws or beaks into the nest box.
[0004] The adapter can be made of wood, metal, or durable plastic. It can be attached by simply plugging it in, securing it with screws or clips, or permanently gluing it to prevent slipping.
Claims
[1] Approach hole adapter for a nesting box (1), consisting of a cylindrical tube (3) which is inserted into the approach hole (2) of the nesting box (1). [2] Approach hole adapter according to claim 1, characterized by that the diameter of the adapter (3) corresponds to the diameter of the approach hole (2) of the nesting box (1). [3] Approach hole adapter according to claim 2, characterized by that the adapter (3) has a length between 0.5 mm and 200 mm, preferably 40 mm. [4] Approach hole adapter according to claim 3, characterized by that the adapter (3) is made of wood, metal or plastic. [5] Approach hole adapter according to claim 4, characterized by that the adapter (3) is either plugged in or attached to the entrance of the nesting box (1) with screws or clips. [6] Approach hole adapter according to claim 5, characterized by that the adapter (3) is alternatively glued to the approach hole (2) to prevent slipping. [7] Approach hole adapter according to one of the preceding claims, characterized by that the adapter (3) can be attached to different nesting box models. [8] Approach hole adapter according to claim 7, characterized by that the adapter (3) is available in different shapes and colours.
