Description
[0001] The present invention relates to processes for the preparation of fluorine-containing compounds by means of precipitation reactions from solutions containing fluoride ions, wherein the pH value is determined by means of an electrochemical measuring chain.
[0002] Chemical precipitation reactions for the production of fluorine-containing compounds are widely used industrially. The pH value is often monitored during the precipitation reaction, and the pH value is used, for example, to determine the further addition of a reactant.
[0003] Until now, this monitoring has usually been done using pH paper and visual inspection. The disadvantage of this method is that it cannot be performed continuously and that the measurement result can depend on the observer's perception of color, lighting influences, and the time of reading.
[0004] The use of glass electrodes for pH measurement is also not practical, as they are unsuitable for use in media containing fluoride ions.
[0005] US 3649473 describes a method for determining the hydrogen content of high-temperature liquids using hydrogen gas diffusion electrodes.
[0006] The object of the present invention is to provide improved processes for the preparation of fluorine-containing compounds by means of precipitation reactions from solutions containing fluoride ions. Advantageously, the pH value can be monitored more precisely during the precipitation reaction. Furthermore, the processes according to the invention lead to a higher yield of the respective product, to improved product purity, to improved process reproducibility, and / or to a reduction in the amount of at least one of the reactants used. Furthermore, the processes according to the invention lead to advantageous physicochemical properties of the respective product, for example with regard to particle size, filterability, melting point, and / or storage stability.
[0007] These and other objects have been achieved by the present invention.
[0008] Accordingly, a first subject matter of the present invention relates to a process for producing a fluorine-containing compound by a precipitation reaction, wherein the fluorine-containing compound is precipitated from a reaction medium and during the course of the precipitation reaction the pH of the reaction medium is determined with the aid of an electrochemical measuring chain, wherein the electrochemical measuring chain is an electrochemical measuring chain containing a hydrogen diffusion electrode as indicator electrode and at least one reference electrode, and the electrodes form a structural unit with a housing with an outlet, wherein the housing comprises a reference electrolyte in contact with the reference electrode and a closed gas space above the reference electrolyte and an electrolytic connection between the reference electrolyte and a measuring medium is established via the outlet.
[0009] The term "fluorine-containing compound" refers to a chemical compound that contains at least one fluorine atom. This can be a covalently, coordinately, or ionically bonded fluorine atom. Examples of ionically bonded fluorine atoms would be the fluorine atoms of a fluoride salt, a fluorozincate, or a fluoroaluminate.
[0010] Preferably, the fluorine-containing compound is selected from the group consisting of at least one alkali metal fluoride, one alkali hydrogen fluoride, one alkaline earth metal fluoride, one alkaline earth hydrogen fluoride, one transition metal fluoride, one fluoride of an element of the third main group, one ammonium fluoride, one alkali metal fluoroaluminate, one alkaline earth metal fluoroaluminate, their hydrates, their HF adducts and mixtures thereof. More preferably, the fluorine-containing compound is selected from the group consisting of KAlF 4 , K 2 AlF 5 , K 3 AlF 6 , CsAlF 4 , Cs 2 AlF 5 , Cs 3 AlF 6 , LiAlF 4 , Li 2 AlF 5 , Li 3 AlF 6 , NaAlF 4 , Na 2 AlF 5 , Na 3 AlF 6 , KBF 4 , BaF 2 , KHF 2 , NH 4 F, NH 4 F 2 , their hydrates, their HF adducts and mixtures thereof, particularly preferably from the group consisting of KAlF 4 , K 2 AlF 5 , K 3 AlF 6 , their hydrates and mixtures containing KAlF 4 , K 2 AlF 5 , K 3 AlF 6 and / or their hydrates.
[0011] Especially preferred is a mixture with the chemical formula K 1-3 AlF 4-6 , which is used as a flux and is manufactured under the name NOCOLOK ®< by Solvay Fluor GmbH. In this specific embodiment, aqueous 5% to 60% hydrofluoric acid (HF), preferably 20% to 30% hydrofluoric acid (HF) is reacted with aluminum hydroxide and the resulting aqueous solution containing fluoroaluminic acid is then mixed with an aqueous solution of KOH, resulting in precipitation of the desired product K 1-3 AlF 4-6. During the addition of the KOH solution, the pH value is checked using the electrochemical measuring chain and the amount of KOH solution added can be adjusted so that the resulting product has reproducibly advantageous properties.
[0012] According to the specific embodiment mentioned above, the following products, which can also be used as fluxes and / or as products for flame soldering, can also be produced: Cs 1-3 AlF 4-6 by adding an appropriate CsOH solution; Na 1-3 AlF 4-6 by adding an appropriate NaOH solution; and Li 1-3 AlF 4-6 by adding an appropriate LiOH solution. Again, the pH value is monitored using the electrochemical measuring chain during the addition of the hydroxide solution, and the addition is adjusted so that the resulting product exhibits reproducibly advantageous properties.
[0013] In another specific embodiment, an aqueous solution or suspension of ZnO and HF is prepared and then mixed with an aqueous KOH solution under pH control using an electrochemical measuring chain. Alternatively, a ZnO suspension is initially introduced and mixed with an aqueous KF solution. During the addition of the second solution, the pH is again checked using the electrochemical measuring chain, and the addition is adjusted so that the resulting product, KZnF 3, exhibits reproducibly advantageous properties.
[0014] In a further specific embodiment, an aqueous solution or suspension of BaCO 3 is reacted with hydrofluoric acid to form BaF 2 , whereby the pH value of the reaction solution is checked by means of the electrochemical measuring chain.
[0015] In a further specific embodiment, an aqueous ammonia solution is reacted with hydrofluoric acid to form NH 4 F HF, whereby the pH value of the reaction solution is checked by means of the electrochemical measuring chain.
[0016] The term "precipitation reaction" refers to a chemical reaction in the course of which the desired chemical compound is formed and at least partially precipitates from the reaction medium as a solid either continuously during the course of the chemical reaction or following the chemical reaction, preferably triggered by further chemical and / or physicochemical manipulation.
[0017] The precipitation reactions can be carried out, for example, in a temperature range from -50 °C to 250 °C. They are preferably carried out from 0 to 100 °C, particularly preferably in a range from 10 to 90 °C, especially in a range from 80 to 90 °C, at room temperature, or at ambient temperature.
[0018] Preferably, the reaction medium contains fluoride ions at the beginning of the precipitation reaction, and hydroxide ions are added to the reaction medium during the precipitation reaction. Likewise, the reaction medium preferably contains hydroxide ions at the beginning of the precipitation reaction, and fluoride ions are added to the reaction medium during the precipitation reaction.
[0019] The pH of the reaction medium is determined at least once during the precipitation reaction. Preferably, the pH is monitored continuously using an electrochemical measuring chain. Likewise, the pH is determined after each addition of a reactant and / or discontinuously at specified times.
[0020] Preferably, the addition of further reactants during the precipitation reaction is controlled by the pH value determined using the electrochemical measuring chain, i.e., the process is operated in a so-called "closed-loop" process. The further addition of at least one reactant is automatically controlled by the pH value of the reaction medium. Alternatively, the addition can be carried out manually depending on the determined pH value.
[0021] The term "reactant" refers to the reactant(s) added to the reaction solution. The reactant can be added in pure form; preferably, the reactant is added as a solution, particularly preferably in an aqueous solution. This can be a single chemical compound. Alternatively, the term "reactant" refers to a mixture of at least two chemical compounds.
[0022] Likewise preferably, the further addition of the reactant is terminated as soon as the pH value determined by the electrochemical measuring chain reaches a value of 2.5 to 7, preferably 3.0 to 5.0, more preferably 3.5 to 4.5.
[0023] By precisely monitoring the pH of the reaction medium during the precipitation reaction, the chemical compounds produced can be reproductively manufactured in new qualities with precisely adjusted chemical and physicochemical properties.
[0024] The electrochemical measuring chain used generally consists of two electrodes, which are preferably structurally combined in one housing. DE 10 2011 113 941 A1 describes an electrochemical measuring chain that is, in principle, suitable for measurements in fluoride-containing solutions. However, it is problematic that the reaction medium can partially penetrate through the diaphragm 14 in DE 10 2011 113 941 A1 into the area enclosed by the electrode housing 1. This can lead to a chemical reaction between components of the electrolyte, which is in contact with the gas diffusion electrode 8, and components from the reaction medium. The products of this chemical reaction can then lead to a blockage of the diaphragm 14. Furthermore, the penetration of the reaction medium can falsify the measured value.Accordingly, the present invention uses an electrochemical measuring chain comprising at least one hydrogen gas diffusion electrode 7 as indicator electrode and at least one reference electrode 8, wherein these electrodes form a structural unit in a housing 1 with an outlet 14 and wherein the housing 1 comprises a reference electrolyte 11 in contact with the reference electrode 8 and a closed gas space 19 above the reference electrolyte 11, and wherein an electrolytic connection is established between the reference electrolyte and a measuring medium 9 via the outlet 14.
[0025] The sealed gas space 19 above the reference electrolyte ensures that a specific amount of the reference electrolyte 11 continuously escapes through the outlet 14, thus preventing the penetration of the measuring medium 9 through the outlet 14. At least the problems described above for the measuring chain from DE 10 2011 113 941 A1 are thereby solved, and increased measurement accuracy is achieved. Furthermore, the escape of reference electrolyte 11 through the outlet 14, for example via the gas volume introduced into the gas space 19, which is generated in the galvanic cell 3 in the hermetically sealed chamber 2, can be precisely controlled, so that contamination of the measuring medium 9, for example the reaction medium of the method according to the invention, can be precisely determined and thus minimized.
[0026] A further advantage of the electrochemical measuring chain used in the invention is that it can be used to measure the pH value in non-aqueous media, for example in organic solvents, as well as in liquid or semi-liquid media such as those used in the food industry.
[0027] The housing 1 is advantageously made of a material that is inert to most chemicals. Plastics such as PTFE, Teflon®, PP, FEP, PFA, PEEK, PE, and PMMA are advantageous. The sealed gas space 19 is located above the reference electrolyte 11 within the housing 1. The term "sealed" means that a certain pressure, for example, a pressure slightly higher than the ambient pressure, can advantageously be established in the gas space. Nevertheless, the part of the housing 1 that seals the gas space 19 can of course contain openings, which are, however, closed during the measurement process, thereby sealing the gas space. For example, the housing 1 can have openings for supplying reference electrolyte, for a level indicator and / or control, for a pressure relief valve, or for measuring instruments in the housing 1.The hydrogen gas diffusion electrode 7 is in contact with the measuring medium and serves as an indicator electrode. It is supplied with hydrogen via at least one hydrogen-generating cell 3, for example according to DE 3532335, which is located in chamber 2, through a gas outlet opening 5 and a thin bore 6. To ensure that the at least one hydrogen-generating cell 3 can operate in a controlled manner, it is discharged via at least one resistor 4. The sealed chamber 2 prevents atmospheric oxygen from entering and hydrogen from escaping uncontrollably. Alternatively, a controlled amount of hydrogen can be fed into chamber 2, for example via a mass flow controller. The potential established at electrode 7 is transmitted, for example, via a palladium wire to contact 10. The measured potential difference (in mV) is used to convert it into a pH value. The electrochemical measuring chain can be advantageously used in systems in which the fluoride concentration is more than 1 wt.%, more than 5 wt.%, more than 10 wt.%, or even more than 20 wt.%, such as 50 wt.%. The electrochemical measuring chain is particularly characterized by the fact that it delivers reliable measurement results even at a fluoride concentration of more than 1 wt.%, more than 5 wt.%, more than 10 wt.%, or even more than 20 wt.%, such as 50 wt.%. Reliable measurement results can be achieved in particular at the above-mentioned fluoride concentrations and high temperatures, such as greater than or equal to 40°C, greater than or equal to 50°C, greater than or equal to 60°C, or even greater than or equal to 70°C, without the measuring chain being significantly affected.Under these conditions, known electrochemical measuring chains cannot operate, especially not as a measuring chain for monitoring the pH value within a chemical process under industrial conditions. If the measuring chain is used in chemical precipitation reactions for the production of fluorine-containing compounds, these are preferably carried out at temperatures of 0 to 100 °C, particularly preferably in a range of 10 to 90 °C, especially in a range of 80 to 90 °C, at room temperature, or at ambient temperature.
[0028] The electrochemical measuring chain further comprises at least one reference electrode 8, which is in contact with the reference electrolyte 11. The potential established at the electrode 8 is transmitted, for example, via a palladium wire to the contact 13. Alternatively, the electrochemical measuring chain comprises two or more reference electrodes. Preferably, at least one reference electrode is a hydrogen gas diffusion electrode 8 with the contact 13 or an Ag / AgCl electrode comprising an Ag wire 18 and an AgCl layer 17 with the contact 12. A hydrogen gas diffusion electrode 8 is particularly preferred. Likewise preferably, the electrochemical measuring chain comprises a hydrogen gas diffusion electrode and an Ag / AgCl electrode, both of which are in contact with the reference electrolyte 11. According to the invention, an electrolytic connection is established between the reference electrolyte 11 and the measuring medium 9 via the outlet 14.The outlet 14 can be one or more diaphragms, one or more annular gaps or one or more holes.
[0029] Furthermore, the housing 1 advantageously comprises a temperature sensor 15, each with a connection 16, one sensor being in contact with the measuring medium and one sensor with the reference electrolyte. To enable an evaluation of the measurements of the electrochemical measuring chain according to Nernst's law, all relevant components (indicator electrode, reference electrode) should have temperatures that differ as little as possible and, above all, should have known temperatures. If this is not the case, significant deviations can occur between the measured voltage in millivolts and the pH value calculated from it. Accordingly, the housing advantageously comprises a heat exchanger that can regulate the temperature of the reference electrolyte 11 and / or the housing 1. In the simplest case, the heat exchanger is a heating coil, a cooling system (e.g., Peltier element), or a combined cooling / heating coil that is immersed in the reference electrolyte 11.
[0030] The reference electrolyte is preferably an aqueous solution of at least one metal salt. Particularly preferred are aqueous solutions of halogen metal salts from the first or second main group of the Periodic Table, such as an aqueous KCl or CsCl solution.
[0031] Furthermore, the housing 1 advantageously comprises one or more fill level indicators that indicate the contained amount of reference electrolyte 11. The fill level indicator can be, among other things, purely optical in the form of a viewing window, photo-optical in nature, mechanical in nature, acoustic in nature, or electronic in nature, for example, by measuring the resistance. This allows the fill level of reference electrolyte 11 to be regulated manually or automatically depending on the result of the fill level indicator, thus preventing the at least one reference electrode from drying out. [0033] 614 kg of hydrogen fluoride in the form of a hydrofluoric acid containing 20 wt.% hydrogen fluoride and 550 kg of aluminum hydroxide (99% purity) are used to form fluoroaluminic acid in a stirred reactor equipped with the electrochemical measuring chain according to Figure 1to react. At a temperature of 80 °C in the reactor and a temperature of 50 °C in the reference electrolyte 11, the reference electrolyte 11 consisting of an aqueous KCl solution, a potassium hydroxide solution containing 15 wt. % KOH, which was obtained by dissolving 550 kg of KOH, is added to the resulting reaction mixture. A suspension of precipitating potassium salts of complex aluminum fluorides forms. During the addition of potassium hydroxide solution, the pH is continuously monitored using the electrochemical measuring chain, and the addition of potassium hydroxide solution is terminated when a pH of 4.0 is reached. The resulting product is filtered, and the filter-moist residue is dried in a flash dryer at 570 °C. The described process leads to advantageous filterability of the suspension as well as higher yield and purity of the resulting product.Furthermore, the process leads to savings in hydrofluoric acid and potassium hydroxide solution, since the additions of hydrofluoric acid and potassium hydroxide solution can be stopped precisely and there is neither an underrun nor an overrun of production. Example 2 - Preparation of a solder flux
[0034] 614 kg of hydrogen fluoride in the form of hydrofluoric acid containing 50 wt.% hydrogen fluoride and 550 kg of aluminum hydroxide (99% purity) are reacted in a stirred reactor to form fluoroaluminic acid. The stirred reactor is equipped with a bypass connected to an electrochemical measuring chain according to Figure 1 and by means of which the reaction mixture is taken from the stirred reactor by means of a pump and, after measuring by means of the said electrochemical measuring chain, Figure 1is released back into the stirred reactor. At a temperature of 80 °C in the bypass and in the stirred reactor, and a temperature of 50 °C in reference electrolyte 11, the reference electrolyte consisting of an aqueous KCl solution, a potassium hydroxide solution containing 15 wt. % KOH, which was obtained by dissolving 550 kg of KOH, is added to the resulting reaction mixture. A suspension of precipitating potassium salts of complex aluminum fluorides forms. During the addition of potassium hydroxide solution, the pH is continuously monitored using the electrochemical measuring chain, and the addition of potassium hydroxide solution is stopped when a pH of 4.5 is reached. The resulting product is filtered, and the filter-moist residue is dried in a flash dryer at 570 °C. The described process leads to advantageous filterability of the suspension as well as higher yield and purity of the resulting product.Furthermore, the process results in savings in hydrofluoric acid and potassium hydroxide solution, as the additions of hydrofluoric acid and potassium hydroxide solution can be stopped precisely, and there is no underrun or overrun of the production line. The use of a bypass also results in a significantly smaller design for the electrochemical measuring chain according to . Figure 1 .
