AI Technical Summary
The existing multipod structure in aluminum electrolysis cells does not effectively dissipate excess heat generated by increased electrolysis current, leading to thermal imbalance and oxidation of anodes due to inadequate control of the covering product, which results in inefficient heat dissipation and potential anode deterioration.
A multipod design with two parallel rows of logs and cooperating bars that block excess covering product and enhance heat dissipation, featuring a groove structure to reduce thermal and mechanical stresses, thereby increasing heat loss and maintaining thermal balance within the electrolytic cells.
The enhanced multipod design allows for increased electrolysis current intensity, improving productivity while maintaining thermal balance and preventing anode oxidation by effectively managing the covering product and dissipating heat, thus reducing the risk of anode deterioration.

Abstract
Description
[0001] Multipod and anode assembly
[0002] This disclosure relates to a multipod and an anode assembly comprising said multipod. Aluminum is conventionally produced by electrolysis in electrolysis tanks using the Hall-Héroult process.
[0003] Electrolytic cells typically comprise a steel casing having a refractory material lining therein, a carbonaceous material cathode arranged at the bottom of the casing, an electrolytic bath in which alumina is dissolved, and a plurality of anode assemblies. An anode assembly comprises at least one anode immersed in the electrolytic bath connected to an anode rod. The anode rod may comprise a multi-pod structure having a plurality of connecting elements or logs sealed in the anode. The anode assembly is typically suspended from an anode frame via the anode rod.
[0004] Application WO2019123131 describes a multipod structure having a plurality of arms and logs sealed in an anode. At a given current, the multipod structure contributes to the thermal balance of the cell. When the current increases, the additional energy involved must be evacuated. To maintain the thermal balance of electrolysis cells, it is therefore necessary to dissipate this excess heat resulting from the increase in the intensity of the electrolysis current. However, the multipod structure does not increase the heat dissipation capacity of the cell.
[0005] In addition, the anodes are more particularly of the prebaked anode type formed from prebaked carbonaceous anode blocks, i.e. baked before introduction into the electrolysis cell. To avoid spontaneous oxidation of the carbon of the anodes in contact with oxygen and to maintain the thermal equilibrium of the electrolysis cell, in particular a stable electrolytic bath temperature around 950°C, it is known to cover the anodes with a covering product, typically alumina and / or recovered and ground electrolysis bath. The covering product generally has a fluid form which, during the electrolysis operations, flows so as to permanently cover the anodes. As the anodes are consumed during the electrolysis reaction, the anode assemblies are therefore regularly replaced by new anode assemblies.
[0006] Electrolytic cells also include electrical conductors connecting the cathode to the anode frame of the next cell in order to conduct the electrolysis current from cell to cell. Thus, the electrolytic cells are connected in series and carried by an electrolysis current whose intensity can reach several hundred thousand amperes.
[0007] To increase the productivity of electrolytic cells, one solution is to increase the intensity of the electrolysis current, which leads to an increase in the heat produced within the electrolytic cells. It is also necessary to maintain the thermal balance of the electrolytic cells by dissipating this excess heat resulting from the increase in the intensity of the electrolysis current.
[0008] When changing an anode assembly, a covering product is poured onto the new anode in order to create a continuous covering of the anode that is as airtight as possible and to prevent the anode surfaces from being in direct contact with the air. Due to the high temperature in the tank near the anodes, any contact between the oxygen in the air and the carbon constituting the anode would cause oxidation of this carbon and therefore deterioration of the anode. In general, a new anode assembly is located higher than the adjacent anode assembly(s) whose anode is already partially consumed.Because of this difference in height between the new anode and an adjacent anode that is partly consumed, the covering product spilled onto the new anode of the new anode assembly also tends to spill over the adjacent anode that is partly consumed of the adjacent anode assembly and to pass between and / or over the logs of the multipod structure, or possibly even over the crosspiece, logs or bars and the multipod structure of the adjacent anode. This adjacent anode is thus covered by an excess of covering product, originating from the flow of covering product intended for the new anode, the thickness of which must in particular make it possible to protect the vertical side of the new anode from oxidation. This excess covering product, by collapsing and flowing between and / or over the logs, fills the gap under the multipod structure and at least partially buries the logs through which part of the heat dissipation takes place. Furthermore, if the new anode is poorly covered, for example to avoid excess covering product on the adjacent anode, the anode, which is mainly made of carbon, oxidizes and the logs, which are mainly made of iron, then become accessible to the electrolytic bath. Contact between the electrolytic bath and the logs can lead to the dissolution of the logs and increases the iron content in the bath and the metal.
[0009] Therefore, in order to protect the vertical sides of the new anode, the adjacent anode is over-insulated. To improve the control of the thermal balance of electrolytic cells, it is therefore necessary to control the fluctuation of the covering product on all the anodes of the electrolytic cells.
[0010] The present disclosure aims to overcome these drawbacks by proposing a multipod and an anode assembly making it possible to reduce the flow effects of the excess covering product between and / or on the logs of adjacent anode assemblies, in particular in the center of the logs, and the burial of the logs and making it possible to maintain the thermal balance of the electrolysis cell, in particular by increasing the dissipation of the heat produced within the electrolysis cells, that is to say by increasing the loss or heat dissipation within the electrolysis cells.
[0011] One embodiment relates to a multipod for the production of aluminum by electrolysis having a longitudinal axis, a transverse axis and a vertical axis, said multipod being configured to be mechanically and electrically connected to two anodes and an anode support, said multipod comprising: two parallel rows each comprising a plurality of logs configured to be connected to said anodes, at least one bar cooperating with one of said two rows mechanically and electrically, and a body connecting the two rows and being configured to be connected to the anode support.
[0012] In other words, it is understood that a single row of logs, or both rows of logs, is / are provided with one or more bars. It is understood that each bar cooperates with only one row of logs among the two rows of logs. In other words, each bar of the at least one bar cooperates with a single row of logs (e.g. with one or more logs of the same row of logs).
[0013] Said at least one bar makes it possible to block the excess of covering product, thus limiting the flow of the excess of covering product between and / or on the logs. Furthermore, a bar cooperates with a single row so as to dissipate the heat produced within the electrolysis tanks, in particular the heat produced at the level of the logs. An increase in the heat loss (or dissipation) within the electrolysis tanks is then achieved. Thus, the intensity of the electrolysis current flowing through a tank equipped with this multipod can be increased, the productivity of this tank can be increased while maintaining a thermal balance.
[0014] For example, the at least one bar comprises two bars or two at least one bars (or two sets of bars, each set of bars comprising at least one bar), each of the two bars / at least one bar cooperating mechanically and electrically with a (single) row among the two rows of logs.
[0015] According to one embodiment, the multipod comprises at least two bars (or two sets of bars, each set of bars comprising at least one bar), each at least one bar cooperating respectively with one of said two rows mechanically and electrically. In other words, at least one bar is associated with each row. In other words, each row is provided with at least one bar.
[0016] It is understood that the multipod comprises two at least one distinct bar, namely a first at least one bar (or a first set of bar(s)) and a second at least one bar (or second set of bar(s)) distinct from the first at least one bar. Each of these two at least one bar is associated with a single row of logs distinct from the row of logs with which the other at least one bar is associated. For example, the first at least one bar is associated with a first row of logs, and the second at least one bar is associated with a second row of logs, the first row of logs being distinct from the second row of logs (the first at least one bar being distinct from the second at least one bar).
[0017] According to one embodiment, said (or each of the two) at least one bar extending along the longitudinal axis of the multipod comprises a top wall, a bottom wall, a side wall and a transverse wall and comprises a groove extending from the bottom wall towards the top wall of the bar. In this embodiment, the thermal and mechanical stresses which accumulate during electrolysis are reduced. Thus, the risk of cracks in the multipod is considerably minimized.
[0018] According to one embodiment, the groove extends mainly or partly along the side wall of the bar along the vertical axis, for example 100% of the side wall of the bar along the vertical axis, for example over a maximum of 98% of the side wall of the bar along the vertical axis, for example between 75% and 98% of the side wall of the bar along the vertical axis. This embodiment makes it possible to significantly reduce the thermal and mechanical stresses and thus avoid the risk of cracks in the multipod, and more precisely in the bar, and / or in the anode(s) linked to the multipod.
[0019] In one embodiment, the plurality of logs each comprise a top wall, a bottom wall, and a side wall, and the plurality of logs comprise end logs, and the at least one bar comprises end bars, wherein the at least one end log and the at least one end bar are configured to be arranged at a first and a second end of an anode, each end log being arranged adjacent an end bar such that the side wall of the log is in contact with the transverse wall of the end bar. For example, the multipod comprises four end bars and four end logs. In this embodiment, the arrangement of the end logs with the end bars increases heat loss (or dissipation). In fact, the presence of bars adjacent to an end log increases the heat dissipation surface.
[0020] According to one embodiment, said (or each of the two) at least one bar comprises central bars, each central bar being arranged between two logs, including end logs, such that the transverse wall of the bar is in contact with the side wall of the two logs. For example, the multipod comprises four central bars. In this embodiment, the arrangement of the logs with the central bars makes it possible to increase the heat loss (or dissipation) by increasing the heat exchange surface.
[0021] According to one embodiment, the body comprises a plurality of arms having a first portion extending along the transverse axis of the multipod and a second portion extending along the vertical axis of the multipod, the second portion of said arms being connected to the plurality of logs. For example, the second portion of said arms is connected to the upper wall of the logs. According to one embodiment, each log is intended to be inserted into an orifice provided in said anode and is intended to be in contact with the second portion of said arms. For example, the lower wall of each log is intended to be inserted into an orifice provided in said anode, and the upper wall of each log is intended to be in contact with the second portion of said arms.
[0022] According to one embodiment, each row comprises a bar on which said plurality of logs (i.e. the plurality of logs of said row) is fixed, said body comprising a crosspiece (which may be unique) in contact with said (or each of the two) at least one bar and being arranged perpendicular to said bar.
[0023] According to one embodiment, each log is intended to be inserted into an orifice provided in an anode and is intended to be in contact with said (or one of the two) at least one bar. For example, the logs of the plurality of logs each comprise a top wall, a bottom wall and a side wall, the bottom wall of each log is intended to be inserted into an orifice provided in an anode and the top wall of the logs is intended to be in contact with the bottom of said at least one bar. In this embodiment, the bars arranged above the logs provide a larger surface area for dissipating the heat produced.
[0024] According to one embodiment, the plurality of logs comprises end logs for being arranged at a first and a second end (along the longitudinal axis) of an anode. For example, the multipod comprises four end logs.
[0025] According to one embodiment, the side wall of the log, in particular the lower part of the side wall, comprises at least one protrusion intended to be inserted into a groove arranged on a side wall of the orifice of said anode. For example, the protrusion and the groove have the shape of a triangular signal. This embodiment makes it possible to ensure the sealing of the log in the anode.
[0026] According to one embodiment, an opening located between an upper wall of the anodes and the lower wall of said (or each of the two) at least one bar extends along the longitudinal axis of the multipod. For example, the opening is a few millimeters, for example 5-6mm. In this embodiment, the unconsumed anode can be easily evacuated from the multipod via the opening. Furthermore, the upper wall of the anodes being adjacent to the lower wall of said (or each of the two) at least one bar, said (or each of the two) at least one bar acts as a barrier to excess covering product. This makes it possible to limit the flow of excess covering product between and / or onto the logs.
[0027] According to one embodiment, the plurality of logs of each row extends along the longitudinal axis of the multipod.
[0028] According to one embodiment, the two rows of logs and said at least one bar extend parallel to each other, along the longitudinal axis (i.e. are arranged coaxially). According to one embodiment, the plurality of logs comprises six logs, each row comprising three logs.
[0029] According to one embodiment, said (or each of the two) at least one bar is welded to the logs, eg all or part of the logs in a row.
[0030] According to one embodiment, said (or each of the two) at least one bar is interposed between the logs or arranged on the logs. In this embodiment, the bars are configured so as to match the shape of the logs.
[0031] According to one embodiment, the at least one bar cooperates with said row so as to limit the flow of a covering product between and / or onto the logs.
[0032] One embodiment relates to an anode assembly for the production of aluminum by electrolysis, said assembly comprising two anodes, an anode support and the multipod according to any of the embodiments described herein.

[0049] Figures 1 and 2 illustrate a multipod 1. The multipod 1 is intended to equip an electrolysis cell (not shown) to produce aluminum by electrolysis using the Hall-Héroult process.
[0050] The multipod 1, having a longitudinal axis AL, a transverse axis AT and a vertical axis Av, comprises two parallel rows I, II each comprising a plurality of logs 13 each comprising an upper wall 13a, a lower wall 13b and a side wall 13c; bars 14 each comprising an upper wall 14a, a lower wall 14b, a side wall 14c and a transverse wall 14d. For example, the plurality of logs 13 comprises six logs, each row I, II comprising three logs. For example, the multipod 1 comprises eight bars 14. In this example, four bars 14 cooperate with one of the two rows I, II mechanically and electrically. In this example, the multipod 1 comprises at least two bars 14 (or two sets of bars 14), a first at least one bar 14 cooperating mechanically and electrically with a first row I and a second at least one bar 14, distinct from the first at least one bar 14, cooperating mechanically and electrically with a second row II, distinct from the first row I.
[0051] The multipod 1 further comprises a body 11 connecting the two rows I, II.
[0052] The plurality of logs 13 of each row I, II may comprise end logs 13E and the bars 14 may comprise end bars 14E.
[0053] Each end log 13E may be disposed adjacent to an end bar 14E such that the side wall 13c of the log is in contact with the transverse wall 14d of the end bar 14E. For example, the multipod 1 comprises four end bars 14E and four end logs 13E.
[0054] The bars 14 comprise central bars 14C, each central bar 14C being arranged between two logs 13, 13E so that the transverse wall 14d of the bar 14C is in contact with the side wall of the two logs 13, 13E. For example, the multipod 1 comprises four central bars 14C.
[0055] For example, the rows of logs I, II and the bars 14 extend parallel to each other, along the longitudinal axis AL.
[0056] The bars 14 can be welded to the logs 13.
[0057] Alternatively, the bars 14, previously configured to match the shape of the logs 13, are interposed between the logs 13 or arranged on the logs 13. In other words, the bars 14 are arranged between and / or on the logs 13.
[0058] Figures 3 to 6 illustrate a multipod 1 connected to an anode support 21. The anode support 21 is generally welded to the multipod 1.
[0059] For example, at least one bar 14, in particular a central bar 14C, comprises a groove 15 extending from the lower wall 14b towards the upper wall 14a of the bar 14. These grooves 15 make it possible to reduce the thermomechanical stresses which accumulate during electrolysis and therefore to reduce the risk of cracks in the multipod and / or the anode(s) linked to the multipod.
[0060] In this example, the groove 15 may extend over all or part of the side wall 14c of the bar 14 along the vertical axis Av. For example, the groove 15 extends over 100% or a maximum of 98% of the side wall 14c of the bar 14 along the vertical axis Av. For example, the groove extends between 75 and 98% of the side wall 14c of the bar 14 along the vertical axis Av. The more the groove is extended, the more the thermomechanical stresses are reduced.
[0061] Figures 7 to 9 illustrate an anode assembly 2 for the production of aluminum by electrolysis according to the Hall-Héroult process. The assembly 2 comprises two anodes 22 each having an upper wall 22a and a lower wall 22b, an anode support 21 and the multipod 1.
[0062] The multipod 1 is mechanically and electrically connected to the two anodes 22.
[0063] The plurality of logs 13 is configured to be connected to said anodes 22 and extends along the longitudinal axis AL of the multipod 1. Furthermore, the bars 14 extend along the longitudinal axis AL of the multipod 1.
[0064] The end logs 13E and said end bars 14E are for example intended to be arranged at a first end E1 and a second end E2 of an anode 22, along the longitudinal axis AL.
[0065] For example, the body 11 of the multipod comprises a plurality of arms having a first portion 16a extending along the transverse axis Aïdu multipode 1 and a second portion 16b extending along the vertical axis Av of the multipode 1, the second portion 16b of said arms being connected to the upper wall 13a of the logs.
[0066] Each log 13 may be intended to be inserted into an orifice 23 provided in said anode 22 and is intended to be in contact with the second portion 16b of said arms. For example, the lower wall 13b of each log 13 may be intended to be inserted into an orifice 23 provided in said anode 22 and the upper wall 13a of each log 13 may be intended to be in contact with the second portion 16b of said arms.
[0067] For example, the side wall 13c of the log 13, in particular the lower part of the side wall 13c, comprises at least one protrusion 13d intended to be inserted into a groove 23a arranged on a side wall of the orifice 23 of said anode 22. Thus, the log 13 is rigidly sealed in the anode 22.
[0068] For example, an opening O located between the upper wall 22a of the anodes 22 and the lower wall 14b of the bars 14 extends along the longitudinal axis AL of the multipod 1. This opening facilitates the evacuation of the unconsumed anode. For example, the opening O is a few millimeters, for example 5-6mm. Thus, the unconsumed anode can be easily evacuated from the multipod 1 via the opening O. Furthermore, the upper wall 22a of the anodes 22 being adjacent to the lower wall 14b of the bars 14, the bars 14 act as a barrier to the excess covering product, thus limiting the flow of the excess covering product between and / or onto the logs 13.
[0069] Figure 10 illustrates a multipod 3 according to another embodiment.
[0070] The multipod 3 having a longitudinal axis AL, a transverse axis AT and a vertical axis Av comprises two parallel rows I, II each comprising a plurality of logs 33 each comprising an upper wall 33a, a lower wall 33b and a side wall 33c; at least one bar 34 comprising an upper wall 34a, a lower wall 34b, a side wall 34c and a transverse wall 34d. Each of the at least one bar cooperates with a single row among the rows I, II, mechanically and electrically. For example, each row I, II comprises a bar 34 on which said plurality of logs 33 is fixed. For example, the plurality of logs 33 comprises six logs, i.e. three logs per row, and the multipod 3 comprises two bars 34.In this example, the multipod 3 comprises at least two bars 34, and more particularly two bars 34, a first at least one bar 34 (or a first bar 34) cooperating mechanically and electrically with a first row I and a second at least one bar 34 (or a second bar 34), distinct from the first at least one bar 34, cooperating mechanically and electrically with a second row II, distinct from the first row I.
[0071] The multipod 3 further comprises a body 31 connecting the two rows I, II. The body 31 may comprise a crosspiece 32 in contact with the bars 34 and arranged perpendicular to said bars 34. For example, the crosspiece 32 is arranged near the upper wall 34a of the bar 34.
[0072] For example, rows I and II of logs 33 and bars 34 extend parallel to each other, along the longitudinal axis AL.
[0073] The bars 34 may be welded to the logs 33 of the respective associated rows. Figures 11 to 14 illustrate the multipod 3 connected to an anode support 41. In this embodiment, the upper wall 33a of the logs 33 is for example in contact with the lower part 34b of said bars 34.
[0074] For example, at least one bar 34 includes a groove (not shown) extending from the bottom wall 34b to the top wall 34a of the bar 34.
[0075] Figures 15 to 18 illustrate an anode assembly 4 for the production of aluminum by electrolysis according to the Hall-Héroult process. The assembly 4 comprises two anodes 42 each having an upper wall 42a and a lower wall 42b, an anode support 41 and the multipod 3.
[0076] The multipod 3 is mechanically and electrically connected to the two anodes 42.
[0077] The plurality of logs 33 is configured to be connected to said anodes 42 and extends along the longitudinal axis AL of the multipod 3. Furthermore, the bars 14 extend along the longitudinal axis AL of the multipod 3. End logs 33E are for example arranged at a first end E1 and a second end E2 of an anode 42 along the longitudinal axis AL. For example, the plurality of logs 33 comprises four end logs 33E.
[0078] For example, the bars 34 with a thickness of a few centimeters along the vertical axis Av and transverse axis AT, and extending along the longitudinal axis AL of the multipod 3 offer a larger surface area for dissipating the heat produced. The lower wall 33b of each log 33 may be intended to be inserted into an orifice 43 provided in an anode 42 and the upper wall of each log may be intended to be in contact with the lower part 34b of the bars. For example, the side wall 33c of the lower part of the log 33 comprises at least one protuberance 33d intended to be inserted into a groove 43a arranged on a side wall of the orifice 43 of said anode 42.
[0079] For example, an opening O located between the upper wall 42a of the anodes 42 and the lower wall 34b of the bars 34 extends along the longitudinal axis AL of the multipod 3. For example, the opening O is a few millimeters, for example 5-6mm. Thus, the unconsumed anode can be easily evacuated from the multipod 1 via the opening O. The upper wall 42a of the anodes 42 being adjacent to the lower wall 14b of the bars 34, the bars 34 act as a barrier to the excess covering product, thus limiting the flow of the excess covering product between and / or onto the logs 33.
[0080] The multipod 1, 3, more particularly the bar(s) 14, 34 of said multipod, and the anode assembly according to the present disclosure, are configured to minimize the spillage of the covering product between and / or onto the logs. In other words, the at least one bar 14, 34 cooperates with said row I, II so as to limit the flow of a covering product between and / or onto the logs 13, 33. Furthermore, the bars cooperate with the logs so as to dissipate the heat accumulated during electrolysis. It follows that the anode assembly is better protected from wear and cracks due to thermal and mechanical stresses.
