Description

[0001] Devices and methods for mixing gases

[0002] The invention relates to devices and methods for mixing gases, in particular for mixing reactive gases, for example for mixing oxygen with gaseous hydrocarbons.

[0003] When mixing gases, the aim is to achieve homogeneous gas mixtures in the most efficient way possible. For example, the homogeneous mixtures should be obtained within a short mixing length and / or within a small mixing volume. This is particularly relevant when mixing reactive gases, such as oxygen-containing gas or even pure oxygen with, for example, hydrocarbon-containing gas, since flammable gas volumes can form in this case, for example with ethylene at an oxygen content of > 8 vol. -%, which is problematic from a safety perspective. Even when producing gas mixtures with an oxygen content below the flammable gas volume, the flammable range is unavoidably passed through if, for example, pure or highly concentrated oxygen is introduced into, for example, hydrocarbon-containing gas during mixing, since this creates local oxygen concentrations above the ignition limit in the mixing range.Ignition occurs when an ignition source is added to the flammable gas volume. Therefore, ignition sources must be eliminated when handling flammable gas volumes. An ignition source with sufficient ignition energy can, for example, be a particle carried in the gas stream that impacts a pipe wall with the corresponding momentum.

[0004] In conventional processes, oxygen or oxygen-containing gas is often injected at points along the edge or distributed over the circumference of the main flow of the hydrocarbon gas stream. However, with such procedures, the formation of ignitable gas volumes is acute. To counter this problem, EP1726355A2 and WO2009078899A1, for example, propose supplying the oxygen via a nozzle, in particular via a nozzle head. Such an approach disadvantageously requires a relatively large mixing volume with a relatively long mixing zone in order to achieve an adequately homogeneous mixture. In US4573803A, a corrosive fluid is introduced into a pipe via nozzles. US3706534A and WQ2009102311A2 aim for distribution across the cross-section of the main flow, but involve a deflection of the main flow, resulting in a high pressure drop. Furthermore, flow rectification can only be achieved with a long mixing length. The rectification of the main flow, together with a distribution across the cross-section, is achieved in DE3037817A1 by injecting the oxygen perpendicular to the flow direction. However, this generates an ignitable volume in the area of potential particle impact surfaces. Overall, existing mixing processes involve a large mixing length or a large mixing volume, and the mixing of reactive gases while excluding potentially entrained particles as ignition sources has not yet been satisfactorily solved.

[0005] Against this background, a further object was to provide devices and methods for mixing gases, in particular for mixing reactive gases, such as oxygen or oxygen-containing gas with gaseous hydrocarbons, while defusing one or more of the problems discussed above. Mixing should preferably be carried out efficiently, for example, it should be possible to obtain adequately homogeneous mixtures when mixing with a short mixing length or small mixing volume. When mixing reactive gases, the formation of ignitable gas volumes should preferably be excluded or at least kept as small as possible, i.e. the mixing time should be kept as short as possible in terms of time and / or space, and the mixing of reactive gases should thus be designed to be handled in the safest possible way.Preferably, the release of ignition energy, particularly in the area of any ignitable gas volumes, should also be reduced or preferably excluded. One subject of the invention are devices for mixing gases comprising a main pipe 1, into which a plurality of plates 2 are introduced, which are arranged parallel to one another and extend from one pipe wall to the opposite pipe wall of the main pipe 1 and are oriented with their flat sides 3 parallel to the longitudinal direction of the main pipe 1, and a distributor pipe 4, from which a plurality of supply lines 4a branch off outside the main pipe 1, each supply line 4a leading into a plate 2 and being connected in the plate 2 to a plurality of channels 5 which are connected to the main pipe 1 via outlet openings 6, the outlet openings 6 being arranged on the end faces of the plates 2 which, when a gas flows through the main pipe 1, are facing away from the gas flow.

[0006] Such a device is shown as an example in Figures 1 to 3 with further preferred embodiments.

[0007] Figure 1 shows a cross section through the main pipe 1 with a top view of the front side of the plates 2 and the outlet openings 6 of the plates 2 and with a top view of the distributor pipe 4 and the supply lines 4a.

[0008] Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the main pipe 1 with a cross section through the end face of a plate 2 and the channels 5 and outlet openings 6 of this plate 2 as well as a cross section through the distributor pipe 4 and a supply line 4a.

[0009] Figure 3 is a cross section through a plate 2, a supply line 4a and an outlet opening 6 as well as a longitudinal section through a channel 5 of this plate 2.

[0010] A further subject of the invention are methods for mixing gases, in which in the device according to the invention a first gas is passed through the main pipe 1 and a second gas is introduced into the distributor pipe 4 and is passed through the plates 2 via the supply lines 4a and the channels 5 and flows into the main pipe 1 via a plurality of outlet openings 6.

[0011] The plates 2 are preferably cuboid-shaped with two longer sides, preferably sides of different lengths, and one shorter side. The two flat sides 3 of a plate 2 are generally its two largest surfaces. The flat sides 3 of the plates 2 are generally aligned parallel to the longitudinal direction of the main conduit pipe 1, preferably parallel to the flow direction of the first gas through the main conduit pipe 1.

[0012] Two opposing end faces of the plates 2 are generally oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the main pipe 1, preferably perpendicular to the flow direction of the first gas through the main pipe 1. The broad side or, in particular, the long side of the plate 2 is preferably oriented transversely to the longitudinal direction of the main pipe 1. The long side or, in particular, the broad side of the plate 2 is preferably oriented in the direction of the pipe wall of the main pipe 1.

[0013] The plates 2, in particular the broad sides of the plates 2, can be fixed, for example, to pipe walls of the main pipe 1. The plates 2, in particular the broad sides of the plates 2, preferably penetrate the pipe walls of the main pipe 1. The contact points of the plates 2 and the main pipe 1 are generally sealed in a gas-tight manner. The plates 2 and the main pipe 1 can be connected to one another, for example, via a weld seam. The plates 2 are generally firmly inserted into the main pipe 1.

[0014] The end faces of the plates 2 located in the main pipe 1 or the segments of the end faces of the plates 2 located in the main pipe 1 can take on any desired shape, but are preferably flat or rounded. Preferably, the end faces of the plates 2 which face the gas flow when a gas, in particular the first gas, flows through the main pipe 1 or which are approached by the gas are rounded. Preferably, the end faces of the plates 2 which face away from the gas flow when a gas, in particular the first gas, flows through the main pipe 1 or which are not approached by the gas are flat or angular.

[0015] Preferably > 2, particularly preferably > 4 and most preferably > 6 plates 2 arranged parallel to one another according to the invention are introduced into the main pipe 1.

[0016] In a cross-section through the main pipe 1 and the plates 2, the total cross-sectional area of the plates 2 arranged parallel to one another is preferably 20% to 60%, particularly preferably 30% to 50% of the cross-sectional area of the main pipe 1. The cross-sectional area of the main pipe 1 generally refers to the inner diameter of the, preferably round, main pipe 1.

[0017] The thickness of the plates 2 is fundamentally variable and can be designed by a person skilled in the art in the usual way and is based, for example, on the diameter of the channels 5, on standard safety requirements when working with gases under the respective pressure and on the mechanical stability of the plates 2 desired in the individual case.

[0018] The thickness of the plates 2 is preferably 3 to 10 cm.

[0019] The distance between two adjacent parallel plates 2 is preferably 5 to 15 cm.

[0020] Due to the preferred configurations and the number of plates 2, for example, the pressure loss of the gases flowing through the main pipe 1 and the device according to the invention can be reduced, and a rectification of the main flow in the region of the device according to the invention can be achieved. The channels 5 of a plate 2 preferably branch off vertically from the supply line 4a.

[0021] The gas flowing out of the outlet openings 6 of the plates 2, also referred to as the second gas, preferably has the same flow direction as the gas flowing through the main pipe 1, also referred to as the first gas.

[0022] The outlet openings 6 of one or more, preferably all, plates 2 are preferably arranged perpendicular to the cross-section of the main pipe 1. All outlet openings 6 of all plates 2 arranged parallel to one another according to the invention are preferably arranged such that all outlet openings 6 are located on a plane perpendicular to the cross-section of the main pipe 1. This can also counteract the formation of ignitable volumes in the areas where particles can impact, for example, a pipe wall or internal components; this means that the release of ignition energy in the area of any ignitable gas volumes can also be reduced or eliminated, for example, with this configuration of the device.

[0023] For example, aligning the outlet openings 6 in the direction of gas flow in the main pipe 1 helps prevent any particles located in the main pipe 1 or entrained by the gas in the main pipe 1 from impacting the wall of the main pipe 1 as a result of turbulent mixing with the gas flowing out of the outlet openings 6, thus counteracting a possible ignition process. The preferred plates 2 with flat or rounded end faces are also helpful for this purpose.

[0024] Preferably, the outlet openings 6 and the channels 5 of the plates 2 are designed such that the pressure loss of the flow of the gas through the channels 5 prevents a backflow of gas from the main pipe 1 into the channels 5. The diameter of the outlet openings 6 is preferably > 1 mm, particularly preferably 2 to 5 mm and most preferably

[0025] 2.5 to 4.5 mm.

[0026] The diameter of the channels 5 is preferably > 1 mm, particularly preferably 2 to 5 mm and most preferably 2.5 to

[0027] 4.5 mm.

[0028] The length of the channels 5 preferably corresponds to > 50%, particularly preferably > 60%, and most preferably 2 / 3 of the length, in particular the width, of the plates. The length of the channels 5 is preferably < 95%, more preferably < 85%, and particularly preferably 75% of the length, in particular the width, of the plates. The channels 5 have a length of preferably at least 5 cm, particularly preferably at least 10 cm.

[0029] The number of outlet openings 6 is preferably > 100, particularly preferably > 300 and most preferably > 700, based on 1 m 2Cross-sectional area of the main pipe 1. This cross-sectional area is generally determined at the location of the main pipe 1 where the outlet openings 6 are located. The cross-sectional area of the main pipe 1 generally refers to the inner diameter of the, preferably round, main pipe 1.

[0030] The outlet openings 6 are preferably evenly distributed over the entire cross-section of the main line pipe 1, with the proviso that the distances of the outlet openings 6 to the inner wall of the main line pipe 1 are preferably greater than the distance between two adjacent outlet openings 6 of a plate 2. The outlet openings 6 of each plate 2 are preferably evenly distributed on one end face of the plate 2, preferably at a greater distance from the inner wall of the main line pipe 1. These configurations can also contribute to the different gases being mixed with one another more efficiently. The distance between the outlet openings 6 of a plate that are closest to the inner wall of the main line pipe 1 and the inner wall of the main line pipe 1 is preferably 3% to 15%, particularly preferably 5% to 10% of the diameter of the main line pipe 1.This is advantageous in order to counteract the formation of ignitable mixtures from the gases to be mixed on the inner wall of the main pipe 1 .

[0031] The outlet openings 6 are preferably deburred.

[0032] The total cross-sectional area of all channels 5 is preferably less than 60%, particularly preferably less than 40% of the cross-sectional area of the supply line 4a. The total cross-sectional area of all supply lines 4a is preferably less than 66%, particularly preferably less than 40% of the cross-sectional area of the distributor pipe 4. The pressure loss of the gas when flowing through the channels 5 is preferably greater than the total pressure loss of this gas when flowing through the distributor pipe 4 and the supply line 4a. The pressure loss of the gas when flowing through the channels 5 is preferably > 50%, particularly preferably > 70%, based on the total pressure loss of the gas when flowing through the distributor pipe 4, the supply line 4a and the channels 5. The efficiency of the mixing of the gases can also be improved with these preferred embodiments.

[0033] Preferably, at least 2, more preferably at least 4, and particularly preferably at least 6 supply lines 4a branch off from the distributor pipe 4. Most preferably, the same number of supply lines 4a branches off from the distributor pipe 4 as the number of plates introduced parallel to one another in the main pipe 1 according to the invention.

[0034] Preferably, each supply line 4a tapers at the point where the supply line 4a branches off from the distributor pipe 4.

[0035] Each supply line 4a within the plates 2 preferably runs parallel to the broad side, particularly preferably parallel to the long side of the plate 2. The supply lines 4a are preferably oriented transversely to the longitudinal direction of the main pipe 1.

[0036] In a preferred embodiment, the supply lines 4a do not extend completely through the plates 2. In this embodiment, the supply lines 4a end in the respective plate 2. In an alternative preferred embodiment, one or more or all of the supply lines 4a extend from one end of the plate 2 to the other end of the plate 2. This embodiment is preferred in order to attach, for example, a pressure gauge to the end of the supply line 4a facing away from the distributor pipe 4.

[0037] The velocity of the second gas upon exiting the outlet openings 6 is preferably greater than the velocity of the first gas in the segment of the main pipeline 1 where the plates 2 are located. The velocity of the second gas upon exiting the outlet openings 6 is preferably twice as great, particularly preferably three times as great, as the velocity of the first gas in the main pipeline 1 spatially in front of the plates 2, in particular spatially immediately in front of the plates 2.

[0038] Preferably, no control devices, such as a control unit for controlling the pressure or flow rate of the gas, are attached to the channels 5 and / or the outlet openings 6 of the plates 2. Such parameters are preferably adjusted via the supply of the gas into the distributor pipe 4.

[0039] The main line pipe 1 is preferably linear or rectilinear in the region, in particular at the point where the plates 2 are introduced into the main line pipe 1. Particularly preferably, the main line pipe 1 has no kink, does not taper, or widen here. The main line pipe 1 is preferably linear or rectilinear. With the preferred designs and method parameters with regard to the distributor pipe 4, the supply lines 4a, channels 5 and plates 2 and outlet openings 6, for example, a backflow of gas into channels 5 can be counteracted. This can also improve the reliable operation of the device according to the invention.

[0040] The device according to the invention can, for example, be an integral part of a pipe or a system or can preferably be installed in a pipeline via flanges.

[0041] The device according to the invention can be made of the usual materials that are commonly used in plant construction for the respective gases and applications, such as stainless steel.

[0042] The first gas and the second gas are preferably reactive with each other. Both the first gas and the second gas can be pure gases or gas mixtures.

[0043] The first gas is introduced into the main conduit 1. The first gas is preferably a combustible gas. The first gas preferably contains one or more hydrocarbons, particularly preferably > 50 vol. % and most preferably > 95 vol. % hydrocarbons, based on the total volume of the first gas. The first gas is preferably free of non-gaseous components.

[0044] The second gas is introduced into the distributor pipe 4. The second gas preferably contains oxygen, particularly preferably > 20 vol. % and most preferably > 95 vol. % oxygen, based on the total volume of the second gas. For the sake of clarity, it should be noted that the device is not limited to the injection of pure oxygen or oxygen-containing mixtures.

[0045] The gas flowing through the distributor pipe 4 preferably has a pressure that is greater than the pressure of the gas or gas mixture surrounding the outlet openings 6. The specific pressure can be adjusted by a person skilled in the art in the usual way, depending on the requirements of the individual case, and the device can be designed accordingly in a conventional manner.

[0046] Preferably, the gases to be mixed have the same temperature. The specific temperature depends on the requirements of the individual case. In principle, the device can be operated at the temperature or temperature range required for the respective process. A temperature sufficiently far from the ignition temperature is preferred. Temperatures commonly used by those skilled in the art can be selected; preferably, the temperatures of the gases are above the respective dew points of the gases to be mixed. The dew points can be found in standard works, for example, Poling, Bruce E., John M. Prausnitz, and John P. O'connell, "The properties of gases and liquids", Vol. 5, New York: McGraw-Hill, 2001, ISBN: 978-0071189712.

[0047] In principle, the gas mixture produced according to the invention can contain any desired proportions of first and second gas. The gas mixture produced according to the invention preferably contains 1 to 99 vol.%, particularly preferably 3 to 30 vol.% and most preferably 5 to 15 vol.% oxygen, based on the total volume of the gas mixture. The gas mixture produced according to the invention preferably contains 1 to 99 vol.%, particularly preferably 20 to 80 vol.% and most preferably 50 to 70 vol.% hydrocarbons, based on the total volume of the gas mixture. The composition of the gas mixture produced according to the invention is preferably at least 20%, particularly preferably at least 15% and most preferably at least 10% below the lower ignition limit of the gas mixture produced according to the invention. The lower ignition limit can be found in standard works and is also determined, for example, by the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing.

[0048] The devices and methods according to the invention are particularly suitable for adding oxygen to hydrocarbon gas streams. This is required in many large-scale industrial processes, such as the production of vinyl acetate or ethylene oxide.

[0049] The device according to the invention and the method according to the invention enable a homogeneous and efficient mixing of gases, which is advantageously expressed, for example, in a short mixing length, a small mixing volume or a short length of the mixing zone and, related thereto, a short mixing time.

[0050] The procedure according to the invention is particularly advantageous for mixing reactive gases, in particular for mixing oxygen (containing) gases with hydrocarbon-containing gases, since the inherently latent danger with regard to ignitable gas volumes and ignition sources can be dramatically reduced. Thus, by minimizing the mixing volume according to the invention, any ignitable volume can also be minimized. In addition, by introducing a gas via the distributor pipe 4, the feed line 4a, the channels 5 and the plates 2 according to the invention, any particles often carried or entrained in gas flows do not become ignition sources, since their impact on a pipe wall or on internals with the release of ignition energy in the range of ignitable gas volumes can be at least reduced or even eliminated.

[0051] Overall, the mixing process according to the invention can achieve an advantageous rectification of the various gas flows, which contributes to the advantageous effects according to the invention.

[0052] Furthermore, the outlet openings 6 are mounted on the downstream side of the plates 2, whereby no impact surfaces for particles can occur in the area of the mixing volume, and the individual mixing zones that arise behind the plates 2 are located in the flow shadow of these plates 2. Since the individual mixing zones are not connected, when one of the mixing zones is ignited, generally not all of the other mixing zones are also ignited. This further reduces the safety risk and the impact on the device and its surroundings.

[0053] In the process according to the invention, pressure losses of the gas flow in the main pipe 1 can be advantageously kept low due to the inventive design of the device according to the invention. In particular, the deflection or constriction of the main flow, which is common in conventional mixing devices but leads to pressure losses, can be dispensed with.

[0054] All these advantages culminate in a very fast, efficient, homogeneous mixing of gas streams with safe operation of the device and this with comparatively low pressure losses and without loss of capacity.

[0055] The following examples serve to explain the invention in detail and are not to be construed as limiting it in any way.

[0056] Hydrocarbon-containing stream A:

[0057] The hydrocarbon-containing stream A consisted of 60 vol.% ethene, 15 vol.% CO2, 15 vol.% acetic acid and 10 vol.% inert gases and had a mass flow of 40 kg / s.

[0058] Oxygen-containing stream B:

[0059] The oxygen-containing stream B consisted of 99.5 vol% oxygen and 0.5 vol% argon and had a mass flow of 2 kg / s.

[0060] Gas mixture produced from stream A and stream B in Example 1 and Comparative Example 2:

[0061] The gas mixture had an oxygen content of 6 vol.%, which is below the theoretical ignition limit of 8 vol.% oxygen for ethylene-oxygen mixtures.

[0062] However, during the mixing process of stream A with stream B, starting from the oxygen content of 99.5 vol.% in stream B, the ignitable range with local oxygen concentrations of 99.5 vol.% to 8 vol.% (ignition limit) was exceeded.

[0063] The energy input required to ignite such gas mixtures is between 0.001 and 0.07 mJ, depending on the oxygen content of the ethylene-oxygen mixture. With the mass flows of streams A and B, this ignition energy can be released simply by the impact of a particle weighing just pg on the pipe wall.

[0064] Example 1 :

[0065] The following mixing device was used:

[0066] The mixing device comprised a DN500 pipe as the main pipe 1, into which seven parallel plates 2 were inserted, which were welded to opposite pipe walls of the main pipe 1. The flat sides 3 of the plates 2 were oriented parallel to the longitudinal direction of the main pipe 1.

[0067] Seven supply lines 4a branched off from the distribution pipe 4 outside the main pipe 1. Each supply line 4a led into and through a plate 2. In the plate 2, channels 5 branched off vertically from each supply line 4a.

[0068] Starting from the distributor pipe 4 via supply lines 4a and channels 5, gas could be introduced through the outlet openings 6 into the main pipe 1.

[0069] The outlet openings 6 were arranged on the end face of the plates 2 which were facing away from the gas flow when the hydrocarbon-containing stream A flowed through the main pipe 1.

[0070] The hydrocarbon-containing stream A was fed into this mixing device through the main pipe 1 .

[0071] The oxygen-containing stream B was introduced into the distribution pipe 4 and mixed with the hydrocarbon-containing stream A upon leaving the outlet openings 6.

[0072] The end faces of the plates 2 , which were subjected to the flow of the hydrocarbon-containing stream A in the main pipe 1 , were rounded .

[0073] The end faces of the plates 2 facing away from the flow direction of the hydrocarbon-containing stream A in the main pipe 1 were flat.

[0074] The ignitable volume in Example 1 was less than 20 liters and extended over a length of less than 30 cm. Within this area, a homogeneous gas mixture was formed. The pressure increase in the event of a possible ignition in such a system is < 0.5 bar.

[0075] The mixing length was therefore short and the mixing volume small; mixing was therefore carried out in an ef fi cient manner.

[0076] The device according to the invention ensured that no ignitable mixture formed in the area of the pipe wall and on the internals, in particular in the area of the pipe wall of the main pipe 1.

[0077] In addition, the device according to the invention ensured that the streams A and B or their mixture flowed in the same direction through the main pipe 1 and that entrained particles did not impact the pipe wall or internals within the ignitable mixing zone and thus no ignition energy was released within the ignitable mixing zone.

[0078] Comparison example 2:

[0079] The mixing device comprised a DN500 pipe as main pipe 1 , into which a conventional nozzle with radial oxygen supply line was inserted.

[0080] The hydrocarbon-containing stream A was passed through the main pipe 1 .

[0081] The nozzle had small holes distributed around the circumference of the main pipe 1, through which the oxygen-containing stream B was introduced into the hydrocarbon-containing stream A in the main pipe 1.

[0082] In comparative example 2, the ignitable volume was 65 liters and extended over a length of 2 meters.

[0083] The pressure increase in the event of ignition was over 1.5 bar. Unfortunately, an ignitable volume formed at the edge of the main pipe 1. Since the gas flowed along the main pipe 1, if particles were entrained in the flow, particle impact could occur in this area, releasing ignition energy and thus igniting the ignitable volume.
