[0040] The FIGs illustrate examples of an apparatus 10 for radio telecommunications.

[0041] The apparatus 10 comprises a primary reflector 12 and a feed arrangement 20. The apparatus is configured to operate as a high gain, high radiation pattern performance, dual band radio frequency antenna. The high gain arises from a narrow spatial beam associated with the primary reflector 12. The apparatus 10 can be used to transmit radio frequency waves and / or receive radio frequency waves.

[0042] The feed arrangement 20 comprises a multi-band waveguide feed 30 and a sub-reflector 40 configured as a feed for the primary reflector 12. The sub-reflector 40 couples the multi-band waveguide feed 30 and the primary reflector 12.

[0043] The multi-band waveguide feed 30 comprises a first waveguide feed 32 for a first frequency band and a second waveguide feed 34 for a second frequency band separate to the first frequency band. The first frequency band and the second frequency band do not overlap and are separated.

[0044] The first waveguide feed 32 and the second waveguide feed 34 are symmetric about a common axis (boresight axis 17 of the apparatus 10) and have, respectively, a first aperture 31 and a second aperture 33.

[0045] The first frequency band is a lower frequency band than the second frequency band. The first aperture 31 is larger than the second aperture 33.

[0046] During transmission, the first waveguide feed 32 provides first radio signals 13 in the first lower frequency band to the sub-reflector 40 which reflects the first radio signals 13 to the primary reflector 12 which then creates a first directed beam comprising the first radio signals 13 centred on the boresight axis 17. The second waveguide feed 34 provides second radio signals 15 in the second higher frequency band to the sub-reflector 40 which reflects the second radio signals 15 to the primary reflector 12 which then creates a second directed beam comprising the second radio signals 15 centred on the boresight axis 17.

[0047] During reception, a received first directed beam, comprising first radio signals 13 in the first lower frequency band, is reflected by the primary reflector 12 towards the sub-reflector 40 which reflects the first radio signals 13 into the first waveguide feed  32. A received second directed beam, comprising second radio signals 15 in the second lower frequency band, is reflected by the primary reflector 12 towards the sub-reflector 40 which reflects the second radio signals 15 into the second waveguide feed 34.

[0048] The sub-reflector 40 comprises a substantially concave hyperboloid reflection surface 42. An example of a hyperboloid reflection surface 42 is illustrated in FIG 3A. FIG 3A is a cross-section of a portion of the sub-reflector 40. In at least some examples, the hyperboloid reflection surface 42 is a two-sheets hyperboloid, for example as illustrated in FIG 3B. In at least some examples, the hyperboloid reflection surface 42 has a shape that can be formed by rotation of a hyperbola curve 46 about the boresight axis 17 (an axis of rotational symmetry of the primary reflector 12) as illustrated in FIG 3C.

[0049] FIG 2 illustrated the entire dual band feed arrangement 20 operating over the ring focus reflector 12. FIG 3A illustrates a high frequency part or zone of the sub-reflector that controls the feed phase centre.

[0050] In at least some examples, the substantially concave hyperboloid reflection surface 42 has a shape optimized to provide via reflection a phase center located at the focus of the primary reflector 12 for frequencies in the second (higher) frequency band.

[0051] In the example illustrated in FIG 2, the primary reflector 12 comprises a concave substantially paraboloid reflection surface 42 having a ring focus. The substantially concave hyperboloid reflection surface 42 has a shape optimized to provide, via reflection, a phase centre locus 16 along the ring focus 14 of the primary reflector 12. The ring focus 14 of the parabolic reflector 12 is offset and not on the boresight axis 17 for both the first frequency band and the second frequency band.

[0052] The primary reflector 12 is a parabolic reflector; a ring focus reflector. The difference between a no-ring focus and a ring-focus reflector is that the parabola focus in the first case is located at a point on the parabola boresight axis 17. The focus off set from the boresight axis 17 in the x-direction is 0. In a ring focus reflector 12, the focus  has an offset from the boresight axis 17, the focus is not 0, it is + / -xo in the x-y plane The parabolic reflector shape is formed by rotation of a parabola, centered on the boresight axis 17, about the boresight axis 17. The ring-focus parabolic reflector shape is formed by rotation of a dual-parabola shape about the boresight axis 17. The dual parabola shape is formed by two identical parabolas that have no offset in the y-direction and are offset in the x-direction with the point of intersection of the parabolas being, cantered on the boresight axis 17. The focus of one of the parabolas is at +xo and the focus of the other of the parabolas is at -xo. The rotation of these focus points about the boresight axis 17 creates a locus 16 that has the shape of a circle (a ring) of radius xo and cantered on the boresight axis 17.

[0053] The phase center locus 16 is a locus where signals in the second (higher) frequency band when transmitted by the second waveguide feed 34 have the same phase. An optimization algorithm can minimize a difference 18 between the phase center position 16 and the ring focus position 14, where the phase center position 16 is the phase center of the higher frequency band.

[0054] The hyperbolic surface values (d, a and b) can be calculated using the optimization algorithm which has the constraint that the phase center is as close as possible to the known value of the ring focus position 14 of the parabolic reflector 12 over the second higher frequency band.

[0055] This produces a hyperbolic surface (x, y) 42 defined by parameters (d, a and b)

[0056]

[0057] The antenna phase center position 16 is strongly correlated to the geometric shape of a hyperboloid of two sheets. The semimajor axis (a) , semi minor axis (b) , diameter (d) are constants of the hyperboloid of two sheets geometry. λ is the higher frequency wavelength. (x, y) defines a surface of the hyperbola. The diameter d of the hyperbola extends perpendicular to the boresight axis as illustrated in FIGs 2 and 3B.

[0058] The optimized hyperbolic reflection surface 22 has its phase center tuned to the ring focus of the parabolic reflector 12 for the second higher frequency band. The parabolic reflector 12 will be illuminated / fed exactly with in-phase fields over the most part of the parabolic reflector 12. The antenna gain and radiation pattern will be strongly optimized.

[0059] FIG 4 illustrates an exterior view of an example of a feed arrangement 20. FIG 5 illustrates a cross-sectional view of the feed arrangement 20 illustrated in FIG 4. The feed arrangement 20 comprises a multi-band waveguide feed 30 and a sub-reflector 40 which is behind dielectric 60.

[0060] An anterior (forward) portion 22 of the feed arrangement is further from the primary reflector 12 and a posterior (backwards) portion 26 of the feed arrangement 20 is closer to the primary reflector 12. A central portion 24 of the feed arrangement 20 is between and interconnected with the anterior portion 22 and the posterior (backwards) portion 26.

[0061] An exterior surface 23 of the anterior portion 22 and an exterior surface 27 of the posterior portion 26 are electrically conductive. These conductive portions can, for example, be formed from aluminium, or metallized dielectric etc.

[0062] An exterior surface 25 of the central portion 24 comprises dielectric material. The dielectric material has a relatively high relative permittivity, for example, a relative permittivity greater than 2.

[0063] The feed arrangement 20 has a substantially cylindrical volume. It deviates from cylindrical because of a number of steps or notches 14 on the exterior surface.

[0064] The feed arrangement 20 comprises a multi-band waveguide feed 30 and a sub-reflector 40. The sub-reflector 40 comprise exterior surfaces 23, 25, 27 that have distinct annular notches 14. The exterior surfaces 23, 25, 27 and the annular notches 14 have rotational symmetry about the boresight axis 17 of the primary reflector 12. FIG 6 illustrates the notches 14 in more detail.

[0065] The sub-reflector 40 comprises an exterior conductive surface 23 that is positioned further from the primary reflector 12 than the substantially concave hyperboloid reflection surface 42 and has one or more distinct first annular notches 14_1 that have rotational symmetry about the boresight axis 17 of the primary reflector 12. Each annulus 14_1 is centred on the boresight axis. In this example, but not necessarily every example, the notches have increasing depth as a distance to the parabolic reflector 12 decreases.

[0066] The sub-reflector 40 comprises an exterior dielectric surface 25 that is positioned closer to the primary reflector 12 than the one or more distinct first annular notches 14_1 and has one or more distinct second annular notches 14_2 that have rotational symmetry about the boresight axis 17 of the primary reflector 12.

[0067] In this example, the distinct first annular notches 14_1 are deep notches having a depth (length li) greater than a width (thickness ti) and the distinct second annular notches 14_2 are shallow notches having a depth less than a width. However, the depth can be greater than width or vice versa, width can be greater than depth. The same is true for the notched 14_2.

[0068] The notches 14_1 are in the conductive material of the anterior portion 22 of the sub-reflector 20. The notches 14_2 are in the dielectric material of the central portion 24 of the sub-reflector 20.

[0069] The dimensions of the notches 14_1, 14_2 are optimized to minimize a linear electric field at the first (lower) frequency band.

[0070] This provides increased Interbrand Isolation (IBI) from second (high) frequency band to the first (lower) frequency band.

[0071] By tuning diffraction fields and surface currents along side the edge of the sub reflector 40, off-phase vectors become on-phase component fields increasing the antenna gain on the first (lower) frequency band. The radiated off phase vectors produced by the second (higher) frequency band that reduce the maximum of the  antenna gain in the first (lower) frequency band are suppressed. This avoids reflection / standing waves.

[0072] Referring to FIG 6, the conductive anterior portion 22 of the sub-reflector 40 has has N impedance steps (notches 14_1) that are defined by a depth (length li ) and a width (thickness ti ) . The notches 14_1 extend inwardly perpendicular to the boresight axis 17. The depth (length li ) is measured in a plane that is perpendicular to the boresight axis 17. The width (thickness ti ) is measured parallel to the boresight axis 17.

[0073] The dielectric middle portion 24 of the sub-reflector 40 has a series of steps (notches 14_2) . A step length 14_2 of the dielectric 60 adjacent the conductive anterior portion 22 is defined by ls . This step length 13_2 acts as a short-circuit. The dielectric 60 is has a plateau formed between the notches 14_2. The plateau has a width defined by length ld and a depth defined by thickness td1. It is terminated at two rectangular step-downs to depth  / thickness td2 at the notches 14_2.

[0074] The geometric values of the dimensional parameters can be calculated using

[0075]

[0076] Where li = l1+ l2+ l3…. and m and n, tunning constants that can vary as 0.89 ≤m ≤ 1.05 and 0.92 ≤ n ≤ 1.08. λ is the wavelength of the first lower frequency band.

[0077] The notches 14 obviate the need for an expensive and complex waveguide filter and mitigate against the second (higher) frequency band signals from the second waveguide feed 34 entering the first waveguide feed 32.

[0078] Referring back to FIG 5, the substantially concave hyperboloid reflection surface 42 forms part of an anterior surface 52 of an air-filled dielectric channel 50 that widens in a radial direction (R) from the boresight axis 17 of the primary reflector 12 to an opening 54. The opening 54 of the channel 50 is short-circuited by dielectric material 60. In this example, but not necessarily all examples the dielectric has a relative  permittivity greater than 1.5 or greater than 2. The dielectric material 60 has a variable thickness (see FIG 6) .

[0079] The second waveguide feed 34 is a higher frequency feed and the first waveguide feed 32 is a lower frequency feed. A relative second waveguide feed 34 is substantially cylindrical and is an inner waveguide feed positioned within and coaxial with the outer first waveguide feed 32.

[0080] The first waveguide feed 32 comprises a pinched neck portion adjacent the first aperture 31. This reduces interference from the reflected waves in the second (higher) frequency band.

[0081] In the example illustrated, the first waveguide feed 32 supports a lower frequency coaxial TE11 mode for two polarizations and the second waveguide feed 34 supports a higher frequency circular TE11 mode for the two polarizations. In the example illustrated, the first waveguide feed 32 is sized to convey radio waves at a frequency less than 25Ghz and the second waveguide feed 34 is sized to convey radio waves at a frequency greater than 30GHz. The first (lower) frequency bands can, for example, be a microwave band, for example, one of 14.2 GHz -15.35 GHz, 17.7 GHz -19.7 GHz and 21.2 GHz –23.6 GHZ. The second (higher) frequency bands can, for example, be one a mm-Wave band, for example, 71 GHz to 86 GHz.

[0082] A radome 100 of the apparatus 10 can be chosen to match the seocnd (higher) frequency band requirements. An example of a radome is illustrated in FIG 1. The radome 100 thickness can be obtained following a mm-Wave RF matching and final tunning which corresponds to a value around where k is a constant calculated by optimization being its range 0.81 ≤ k ≤1.17 and λ the free space wavelength.

[0083] The apparatus 10 can, for example, be used for transmission and / or reception in a dual-band backhaul system that conveys network information.

[0084] The apparatus 10 can, for example, be used for transmission and / or reception in a dual-band backhaul system that uses Bands and Carrier Aggregation (BCA) that aggregates the first frequency band and the second frequency band.

[0085] The apparatus 10 can, for example, be used for transmission and / or reception in a dual-band backhaul system of a New Radio (NR) Third Generation Partnership (3GPP) system.

[0086] The apparatus 10 improves antenna radio frequency performances (return loss, gain, radiation patterns, interband isolation etc) on both frequency bands. That apparatus 10 is configured to propagate (receive or transmit) two radio frequency (RF) signals 13, 15, one in a first low frequency band and the other in a second higher frequency band. In at least some examples orthogonal polarizations are used in both frequency bands.

[0087] Where a structural feature has been described, it may be replaced by means for performing one or more of the functions of the structural feature whether that function or those functions are explicitly or implicitly described.

[0088] The above-described examples find application as enabling components of: automotive systems; telecommunication systems; electronic systems including consumer electronic products; distributed computing systems; media systems for generating or rendering media content including audio, visual and audio visual content and mixed, mediated, virtual and / or augmented reality; personal systems including personal health systems or personal fitness systems; navigation systems; user interfaces also known as human machine interfaces; networks including cellular, non-cellular, and optical networks; ad-hoc networks; the internet; the internet of things; virtualized networks; and related software and services.

[0089] The apparatus can be provided in an electronic device, for example, a mobile terminal, according to an example of the present disclosure. It should be understood, however, that a mobile terminal is merely illustrative of an electronic device that would benefit from examples of implementations of the present disclosure and, therefore, should not be taken to limit the scope of the present disclosure to the  same. While in certain implementation examples, the apparatus can be provided in a mobile terminal, other types of electronic devices, such as, but not limited to: mobile communication devices, hand portable electronic devices, wearable computing devices, portable digital assistants (PDAs) , pagers, mobile computers, desktop computers, televisions, gaming devices, laptop computers, cameras, video recorders, GPS devices and other types of electronic systems, can readily employ examples of the present disclosure. Furthermore, devices can readily employ examples of the present disclosure regardless of their intent to provide mobility.

[0090] The term ‘comprise’ is used in this document with an inclusive not an exclusive meaning. That is any reference to X comprising Y indicates that X may comprise only one Y or may comprise more than one Y. If it is intended to use ‘comprise’ with an exclusive meaning then it will be made clear in the context by referring to “comprising only one... ” or by using “consisting” .

[0091] In this description, the wording ‘connect’ , ‘couple’ and ‘communication’ and their derivatives mean operationally connected / coupled / in communication. It should be appreciated that any number or combination of intervening components can exist (including no intervening components) , i.e., so as to provide direct or indirect connection / coupling / communication. Any such intervening components can include hardware and / or software components.

[0092] As used herein, the term "determine / determining" (and grammatical variants thereof) can include, not least: calculating, computing, processing, deriving, measuring, investigating, identifying, looking up (for example, looking up in a table, a database or another data structure) , ascertaining and the like. Also, "determining" can include receiving (for example, receiving information) , accessing (for example, accessing data in a memory) , obtaining and the like. Also, "determine / determining" can include resolving, selecting, choosing, establishing, and the like.

[0093] In this description, reference has been made to various examples. The description of features or functions in relation to an example indicates that those features or functions are present in that example. The use of the term ‘example’ or ‘for example’ or ‘can’ or ‘may’ in the text denotes, whether explicitly stated or not, that such  features or functions are present in at least the described example, whether described as an example or not, and that they can be, but are not necessarily, present in some of or all other examples. Thus ‘example’ , ‘for example’ , ‘can’ or ‘may’ refers to a particular instance in a class of examples. A property of the instance can be a property of only that instance or a property of the class or a property of a sub-class of the class that includes some but not all of the instances in the class. It is therefore implicitly disclosed that a feature described with reference to one example but not with reference to another example, can where possible be used in that other example as part of a working combination but does not necessarily have to be used in that other example.

[0094] Although examples have been described in the preceding paragraphs with reference to various examples, it should be appreciated that modifications to the examples given can be made without departing from the scope of the claims.

[0095] Features described in the preceding description may be used in combinations other than the combinations explicitly described above.

[0096] Although functions have been described with reference to certain features, those functions may be performable by other features whether described or not.

[0097] Although features have been described with reference to certain examples, those features may also be present in other examples whether described or not.

[0098] The term ‘a’ , ‘an’ or ‘the’ is used in this document with an inclusive not an exclusive meaning. That is any reference to X comprising a / an / the Y indicates that X may comprise only one Y or may comprise more than one Y unless the context clearly indicates the contrary. If it is intended to use ‘a’ , ‘an’ or ‘the’ with an exclusive meaning then it will be made clear in the context. In some circumstances the use of ‘at least one’ or ‘one or more’ may be used to emphasis an inclusive meaning but the absence of these terms should not be taken to infer any exclusive meaning.

[0099] The presence of a feature (or combination of features) in a claim is a reference to that feature or (combination of features) itself and also to features that achieve  substantially the same technical effect (equivalent features) . The equivalent features include, for example, features that are variants and achieve substantially the same result in substantially the same way. The equivalent features include, for example, features that perform substantially the same function, in substantially the same way to achieve substantially the same result.

[0100] In this description, reference has been made to various examples using adjectives or adjectival phrases to describe characteristics of the examples. Such a description of a characteristic in relation to an example indicates that the characteristic is present in some examples exactly as described and is present in other examples substantially as described.

[0101] The above description describes some examples of the present disclosure however those of ordinary skill in the art will be aware of possible alternative structures and method features which offer equivalent functionality to the specific examples of such structures and features described herein above and which for the sake of brevity and clarity have been omitted from the above description. Nonetheless, the above description should be read as implicitly including reference to such alternative structures and method features which provide equivalent functionality unless such alternative structures or method features are explicitly excluded in the above description of the examples of the present disclosure.

[0102] Whilst endeavoring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features believed to be of importance it should be understood that the Applicant may seek protection via the claims in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and / or shown in the drawings whether or not emphasis has been placed thereon.
