[0004] BACKGROUND

[0005] A surfactant based on fatty alcohol polyglycol ether or its derivate is widely used in an agrochemical composition as an adjuvant. For example, fatty alcohol polyglycol ether or its derivate can be used in an agrochemical (e.g., herbicidal) composition as an emulsifier. In many countries during the storage or the transportation, agrochemical compositions can be exposed to low temperatures. However, it may be problematic if the content of the fatty alcohol polyglycol ether i or its derivate in an agrochemical composition is very high, for example 30 percent by weight because it may result in a precipitation when the product is stored at low temperature.

[0145] EXAMPLES

[0146] The following examples do not limit the present disclosure, but merely illustrate how the present disclosure is implemented.

[0147] Test Methods

[0148] Low temperature stability is measured according to CIPAC MT 39.3 “MT 39.3 LOW TEMPERATURE STABILITY OF LIQUID FORMULATIONS” at 0°C for 14 days. The composition is evaluated as "stable" after a storage if there are no precipitations at the bottom of the container containing the composition by visual observation and the turbidity of the composition is less than 50 NTU (nephelometric turbidity unit), preferably less than 40 NTU, more preferably less than 30 NTU.

[0149] Turbidity is measured with a HACH, 2100Q portable turbidimeter, and the results are given in a nephelometric turbidity unit (NTU) as an average value. The turbidity is measured as follows: First, the composition is stored at 0 °C for 14 days as required in the test method for Low temperature stability; second, the composition is tested for turbidity with the turbidimeter at 0°C.

[0150] Example 1

[0151] Compositions 1-4 (C1-C4) were formulated in this Example 1 by mixing Genapol X-80, solvesso 200 ULN, and selected co-solvents (propylene carbonate, gamma butyrolactone, and / or N-methylpyrrolidone) as shown in Table 1 in the percentage by weight as shown in Table 1 thoroughly until homogenous.

[0152] Then, the compositions 1 to 4 were tested for low temperature stability and turbidity, respectively. The results were shown in Table 1 too. As is seen from Table 1 that only composition 1 comprising both y -butyrolactone and propylene carbonate in an amount of 7% by weight each exhibited no precipitations and the lowest NTU after a storage at 0 °C for 14 days, and was evaluated as stable. It was noted that composition 1 was slightly turbid by visual estimation after a storage at 0 °C for 14 days. Compositions 2 and 3 comprising only y -butyrolactone or propylene carbonate in an amount of 7% by weight exhibited clear precipitations and a much higher NTU than composition 1 after a storage at 0 °C for 14 days. By comparing composition 4 to composition 2, it is seen that composition 4 comprising additional NMP in an amount of 7% by weight exhibited the worst precipitations and in turn the worst NTU.

[0153] Table 1

[0154] ’ Fatty alcohol polyglycol ether

[0155] Example 2

[0156] Compositions 5-6 (C5-C6) were formulated in this Example 2 by mixing Genapol X-80, solvesso 200 ULN, and selected co-solvents (propylene carbonate or gamma butyrolactone) as shown in Table 2 in the percentage by weight as shown in Table 2 thoroughly until homogenous.

[0157] Then, compositions 5-6 were tested for low temperature stability. The results were shown in Table 2 too. As is seen from Table 2 that both composition 5 and composition 6 comprising y -butyrolactone or propylene carbonate in an amount of 14% by weight exhibited no precipitations after a storage at 0 °C for 14 days, and were evaluated as stable. It was also noted that compositions 5 and 6 were slightly turbid by visual estimation after a storage at 0 °C for 14 days as composition 1.

[0158] Table 2

[0159] ’ Fatty alcohol polyglycol ether Example 3

[0160] Compositions 1’, 5’, 6’, and 7-10 (CT, C5’, C6’, and C7-C10) were formulated in this Example 3 by mixing Genapol X-80, solvesso 200 ULN, and selected co-solvents (propylene carbonate and / or gamma butyrolactone) as shown in Table 3 in the percentage by weight as shown in Table 3 thoroughly until homogenous.

[0161] Then, compositions 1’, 5’, 6’, and 7-10 were tested for low temperature stability and turbidity, respectively. The results were shown in Table 3 too. As is seen from Table 3, Cl’, C5’, and C6’ were repeated from Cl, C5 and C6 in Examples 1 and 2 above, respectively, and Cl’, C5’, and C6’ exhibited no precipitations after a storage at 0 °C for 14 days, a very small NTU, and were evaluated as stable. As is seen from Table 3 that compositions 7 and 8 comprising y -butyrolactone or propylene carbonate in an amount of 8% by weight exhibited no precipitations after a storage at 0 °C for 14 days and a very small NTU, and were evaluated as stable. It was also noted that compositions 1’, 5’, 6’, 7 and 8 were clear by visual estimation after a storage at 0 °C for 14 days. However, after a storage at 0 °C for 14 days, composition 9 exhibited clear precipitations and phase separation, and composition 10 was opaque and exhibited the highest NTU, both of which were evaluated as not stable.

[0162] Table 3

[0163] ' Fatty alcohol polyglycol ether

[0164] Example 4

[0165] Compositions 11-17 (C11-C17) were formulated in this Example 4 by mixing Genapol X-80, solvesso 200 ULN, and selected co-solvents (propylene carbonate and / or gamma butyrolactone) as shown in Table 4 in the percentage by weight as shown in Table 4 thoroughly until homogenous. Then, compositions 11-17 were tested for low temperature stability and turbidity, respectively. The results were shown in Table 4 too. After a storage at 0 °C for 14 days, Cl 2, Cl 3, and C17 were clear, C16 was slightly turbid, all of C12, C13, C16, and C17 exhibited no precipitations and NTU less than 20, and thus were evaluated as stable. However, after a storage at 0 °C for 14 days, composition 11 exhibited clear precipitations and phase separation, and compositions 14-15 were opaque and exhibited a very high NTU greater than 120, and all of compositions 11, 14 and 15 were evaluated as not stable.

[0166] Table 4

[0167] ' Fatty alcohol polyglycol ether

[0168] Example 5

[0169] Compositions 18-21 (C18-C21) were formulated in this Example 5 by mixing Genapol X-80, solvesso 200 ULN, and selected co-solvents (propylene carbonate and / or gamma butyrolactone) as shown in Table 5 in the percentage by weight as shown in Table 5 thoroughly until homogenous.

[0170] Then, compositions 18-21 were tested for low temperature stability and turbidity, respectively. The results were shown in Table 5 too. As is seen from Table 5, after a storage at 0 °C for 14 days, C18-C19 were clear, exhibited no precipitations and a very small NTU, and were evaluated as stable. However, C20-23 exhibited light phase separation, cloudiness on the bottom, and very high NTU, and were evaluated as not stable. Compared C20-23 to Cl 6- 17 respectively, it seems that use of propylene carbonate and gamma butyrolactone in combination is more effective than use of propylene carbonate or gamma butyrolactone alone at the same content.
