Description

A FLEXIBLE DC-DC CONVERTER

[0001] TECHNICAL DOMAIN

[0002] The inventive concepts described herein relate generally to the domain of electronic circuit arrangements for operating light sources. More particularly, embodiments described herein relate to the design of DC-DC converters for driving LEDs, especially LED arrays.BACKGROUND

[0003] In order to function properly, LED lighting systems need to be driven properly. The forward voltage of a LED varies inversely with temperature, causing the LED to try to draw more current as the temperature rises. This can lead to thermal runaway and damage to the LED. An appropriate amount of power therefore needs to be provided in the form of a precise balance of current and voltage. Different types of LEDs or different configurations of groups or arrays of LEDs require different types of drivers to provide the correct balance of voltage and current for providing the power.

[0004] Drivers therefore exist in the form of constant current LED drivers, while other drivers are constant voltage LED drivers. System designers have to choose which of the two types of drivers are most suitable for their LED lighting system or LED display. For example, in systems where LEDs are connected in series, it is advantageous to use a constant current LED driver, whereas with systems with LEDs or strings of LEDs mostly in parallel with each other, it is advantageous to use a constant voltage LED driver.

[0005] LED drivers usually have one or more microcontrollers to provide a convenient way to control the outputs. An advantage of using a microcontroller is to provide flexibility and ease of programming. However, the inclusion of a microcontroller in the driver may have a significant impact on the cost of the driver. Furthermore, debugging of driver applications may become complicated when a microcontroller is used and the application may be liable to failure or to hacking by unscrupulous third parties. It is therefore a goal of the present invention to produce a flexible, reliable LED driver at a reasonable cost.

[0006] BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] There is a need for a cost-effective, flexible, reliable, configurable DC-DC converter for providing power and control signals to an LED driver for driving a plurality of LEDs, preferably in an array or similar configuration allowing for the realisation of LED animations.

[0008] To this effect, according to an aspect, a driver circuit is disclosed, the driver circuit being configured to provide output power at a plurality of power outputs for driving a plurality of light-emitting diodes, the driver circuit comprising:

[0009] a power input port for receiving input power for conversion to provide the output power;

[0010] at least one digital input port for receiving digital commands and / or communication signals for controlling said driving of the plurality of light-emitting diodes;

[0011] a decoder configured to receive and decode the received digital commands and / or communication signals from the digital input port to provide an internal instruction bus comprising one or more digital instruction lines;

[0012] one or more DC-DC power converters configured to provide electrical power at a substantially constant current via at least one output from said plurality of power outputs of the driver circuit;

[0013] one or more DC-DC power converters configured to provide electrical power at a substantially constant voltage via at least one remaining output from said plurality of power outputs of the driver circuit;

[0014] characterised in that the driver circuit further comprises:

[0015] a first power controller circuit configured to receive a digital power input whose value depends on a level of input power received at the power input port and to provide a first internal multi-purpose input / output bus for conveying a first internal multi-purpose bus encoded value which depends on a status of the internal instruction bus and on the value of said digital power input;

[0016] a second power controller circuit configured to provide a second internal multi-purpose input / output bus for conveying a second internal multi-

[0017] purpose bus encoded value which depends on a status of the internal instruction bus; and

[0018] an internal power bus to provide an input to said DC-DC power converters.

[0019] The power input received at the power input port may come from a battery or other suitable power supply. The power input may be a voltage source or a current source in that it may come from a power supply capable of providing a substantially constant voltage or a substantially constant current. According to a preferred embodiment, when used in an automotive application, the power input may come from the car battery. The control inputs may come from a CAN bus.

[0020] Although there is a tendency to use microcontrollers everywhere, advantage may be found, as discussed in the present disclosure, in avoiding their use in favour of providing a robust, cost-effective solution tailored for purpose. Embodiments of the present invention allow for faster execution of instructions compared to known drivers in which the instructions require to be interpreted by a general-purpose microcontroller or the like.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0021] The inventive concepts described herein will be better understood thanks to the detailed description which follows and the accompanying drawings, which are given as non-limiting examples of embodiments of the inventive concepts described herein, namely:

[0027] FIG. 1 shows a system 100 for driving a network of a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LED) , shown as block 30. The plurality of light-emitting diodes 30 may be arranged in series or in parallel or in any predetermined arrangement combining both series and parallel configurations. In example embodiment, the plurality of LEDs 30 may be arranged on a headlamp or on a rear lamp of an automotive vehicle to perform one or more of a daytime running light (DRL) function, a pilot lamp (PL) function, a turn indicator (TI) function, a low beam (LB) function, a high beam (HB) function, or to create an animation using the LEDs. The plurality of LEDs 30 may be connected to a LED driver 20, which receives power and / or control signals from a driver circuit 110, according to an embodiment of the present invention. The driver circuit 110 is configured to convert an input power PWR from a given source 10 to provide one or more power outputs providing a substantially constant current CCn and at least one power output providing a substantially constant voltage CVn. The driver circuit 110 may also provide analog-to-digital outputs and one or more control signals such as low side switches LSSn or high side switches HSSn. The driver circuit may also receive control inputs to control the different power outputs and to derive the control outputs such as the low side and high side switches and / or to control or derive the analog-to-digital outputs. According to a particular embodiment, a plurality of stepper motor outputs may be provided by the driver circuit for driving one or more stepper motors. Such a system may find use in an automotive environment, for example for controlling various LED lights or arrays of LED lights in a vehicle. The power and control signals may come from a body control module BCM 10, the control signals being part of a CAN bus, for example.

[0028] According to an embodiment, the driver circuit 110 comprises one or more regulators for providing power at a substantially constant current. FIG. 2 shows an example of a first type of DC-DC converter configured to provide a substantially constant current CC1, which may be used to drive a plurality of LEDs of a LED display or other arrangement of LEDs. FIG. 2 illustrates a first type of constant  current source which may be deployed within a driver circuit 110 according to an embodiment of the invention. In FIG. 2, a part of a load 200 which may be driven by a constant current source of the driver circuit is also illustrated. In an embodiment the load 200 may correspond to a string of LEDs. In this case, CC1 is the constant current being driven to the load and CC1’ may be a return current coming back from the load or a further output current being provided in parallel to the load, depending on the settings of the switches controlled by MPIOn and MPIOn+1. Such a converter may be made available within a driver circuit 110 according to an embodiment of the invention.

[0029] The driver circuit 110 may have a decoder (not illustrated in the drawings) to decode the control signals, for example signals present on a CAN bus, said signals being represented by CTL in FIG. 1, to provide an internal instruction bus COM. An internal power bus INTP may be derived from an external power input present at a power input port PWR of the driver circuit 110. The power input port may be connected electrically to a car battery terminal or other suitable power supply from the car. According to an embodiment, the internal power bus may be alternately connected to and disconnected from the power port based on a control signal from the internal instruction bus COM or a signal derived therefrom.

[0030] The internal power bus INTP may be fed to a first buck-boost converter 122 in the driver circuit 110 to provide electrical power at a substantially constant current CC1 at one of the power output ports 22 of the driver circuit 110. The first buck-boost converter 122 may be controlled using the internal instruction bus COM. In an example embodiment, the internal instruction bus COM signal can be provided by the Body Control Module (BCM) (not shown in figure) that is located external to the driver circuit 110. Substantially constant current output CC1 may be provided, via the first buck-boost converter 122, to an LED or a chain of LEDs or other array of LEDs. According to an embodiment, a return current from the plurality of LEDs may arrive at port 24 of the driver circuit 110. According to an embodiment, the instruction bus COM signal from the BCM is fed to an analogue to digital converter (not shown in figure) of the driver circuit 110 and the output of the analogue to digital converter is provided as control input to the first power controller circuit 112. According to an embodiment, the driver circuit 110 may be configured to translate the analogue to digital converter output ADCn, ADCn+1, according to the status of the control signals  CTL, and to generate a high side and low side control signals to control the high side switches and low side switches, derived from either of the first or second internal multi-purpose input / output busses. Two control signals from within the driver circuit 110, for example a high side switch control HSS1 and a low side switch control LSS2, may be used to control whether the return current gets routed to ground or whether it gets re-routed to the constant current output port 22, effectively providing an on / off control for any LEDs driven by the constant current output. It is to be noted that the LEDs 200 are controlled by the power controller 112 without modifying the output power from the first buck boost converter 122. Thus, the constant current output CC1 from the first buck-boost converter 122 is maintained unchanged irrespective of load condition. Further, input power supply for the power controller 112 is independent from the output power supply of the first buck-boost power converter 122.

[0031] FIG. 3 shows an example of a second type of DC-DC converter configured to provide a substantially constant current CC2, which may be used to drive one or more LEDs of a LED display or other arrangement of LEDs. In this type of DC-DC converter, a second buck-boost converter 124 may be used to provide electrical power at a substantially constant current CC2 at one of the power outputs 25 of the driver circuit 110. The second buck-boost converter 124 may be controlled using the internal instruction bus COM. A return current path via port 26 may be controlled using a low side switch control signal MPIOn to block or to allow the return current to ground. The low side switch control signal MPIOn may be derived from the internal instruction bus COM via a second power controller circuit 114, similar to the one used in FIG. 2 (112) .

[0032] Figure 4 shows an example of a third type of DC-DC converter configured to provide a substantially constant current CC3. This is similar to the converter illustrated in FIG. 2 except that the third type uses a boost converter 125 followed by a buck converter 126. The power controller 116 is similar to the one used in FIG. 2.

[0033] Figure 5 illustrates an example of a DC-DC converter configured to provide a substantially constant voltage. This circuit used a buck converter 128 designed to provide a substantially constant output voltage CV1, the buck converter being controlled by a power controller 118. The constant voltage

[0034] According to an embodiment, the output of the analogue-to-digital converter may be brought to one or more output pins of the driver circuit 110, preferably via one of the power controller circuits 122, 114, 116, and 118. According to another embodiment, one or more of the internal instruction bus signals can be routed to one or more analogue-to-digital outputs of the driver circuit 110, preferably via one of the power controller circuits. According to an embodiment, one or more of the low side switch control signals or high side switch control signals may be brought to one or more output pins of the driver circuit 110, preferably via one of the power controller circuits.

[0035] According to an embodiment, provision is made for a plurality of outputs of the driver circuit 110 for driving one or more stepper motors. The stepper motor outputs may be derived from one or more multi-purpose input / output lines, which may in turn be derived from one or more internal instruction bus lines.

[0036] An automobile in which an embodiment of the present invention may be deployed may comprise a main controller or an engine control unit ECU. Signals from this controller, which is external to the driver circuit of the present invention, may arrive at the driver circuit via the automobile’s CAN bus. A CAN transceiver on the driver circuit may receive the CAN signals from the automobile’s main controller and these signals may be used by one or more of the first and second power controllers in the driver circuit to turn on and / or off respective LEDs in a LED display arrangement. According to an embodiment, said power controllers may be configured to operate the switches via the HSS1 and LSS1 signals to operate the LEDs. According to another embodiment, either of the power controllers can be used to activate a load directly, For example to drive an ADC port.
