Abstract
Description
Background
[0001] Roof skylights with a plurality of roof domes arranged on top of each other to create one or more thermally insulating rooms between the roof domes are known in the prior art.
[0002] It is an objective of the present invention to provide such roof skylight wherein the manufacturing of the skylight can be simplified.Summary
[0003] The present invention relates to a roof skylight having at least two transparent roof domes, wherein the vertical distance between the two roof domes is adjusted by means of a spacer profile provided between flanges of the two roof domes. The vertical distance between the roof domes defines the thermally insulating characteristics of the room formed between the two roof domes, and by providing the spacer profile, a variety of roof skylight configurations with different thermal and visual features may be achieved with a more limited number of different roof domes, thus simplifying the manufacturing of such skylights and reducing the costs of production of a variety of configurations. In particular, the use of the spacer profile allows for two substantially identical roof domes to be stacked on each other and obtain suitable thermally insulating roof skylights.
[0004] Thus, the present invention relates to a roof skylight having a rectangular glazing frame enclosing an upward opening of the skylight, the glazing frame supporting a panel on a curb extending upwards from a roof surface, wherein the panel comprises at least two roof domes staggered in the vertical direction, the panel being clamped together by means of a plurality of fasteners extending through vertical openings in the panel, the panel being provided with a spacer profile extending between flanges of the two roof domes, the spacer profile being provided with a plurality of openings for the plurality of fasteners.
[0005] The roof domes may preferably be made from polycarbonate or from Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and the panel is preferably transparent or translucent to allow for daylight to enter into the building provided with the roof skylight.
[0006] The spacer profiles has preferably a height in the vertical direction in the range of 8 to 30 millimetre, such as in the range of 10 to 20 millimetre. The width of the spacer profile is preferably in the range of 35 to 70 millimetre, such as in the range of 40 to 60 millimetre.
[0007] In one embodiment of the roof skylight, the two roof domes with the spacer profile in between are substantially identical by which is understood that the two roof domes at least in the rectangle between the flanges are of identical curvature and may be produced by means of the same pressing mold.
[0008] The roof skylight may further comprise a plurality of fastener screws extending through a plurality of the fasteners and into the glazing frame.
[0009] Furthermore, the glazing frame may comprise a profile provided with a recess in an upper surface facing the panel, the recess being of a tapering cross-section for guiding the position of the fastener screws when being driven into the glazing frame. Hereby, a simple and almost fool-prove mounting of the panel on the glazing frame, in particular on-site at the roof is obtained.
[0010] The upper of the two roof domes may comprise a dome skirt integrated with the roof dome so as to prevent rain water from entering into the roof skylight.
[0011] The spacer profile is preferably provided with a first gasket on a lower side thereof, the first gasket abutting the flange of a lower of the roof domes, and a second gasket on an upper side of the spacer profile, the second gasket abutting the flange of an upper of the roof domes.
[0012] The spacer profile is preferably made from polymer such as polyvinylchloride (PVC). PVC is a highly stable polymer also when subjected to UV light and is readily reuseable.
[0013] The spacer profile may in one embodiment comprise an outer shell made from a thermoplastic polymer or a thermoplastic polymer composition, the outer shell defining an internal cavity filled with substantially the same foamed thermoplastic polymer or thermoplastic polymer composition from which the shell is made. Hereby, the recycling of the spacer profile insulated with the foamed material is simple and a separation of material is not required. The polymer is preferably polyvinylchloride (PVC).
[0014] In another embodiment, the spacer profile consist of a foamed polymer, such as polyvinylchloride (PVC).
[0015] A panel gasket is preferably arranged between the lower surface of the flange of the lowest roof dome and the upper surface of the glazing frame, the gasket extending in the longitudinal direction of the glazing frame between the transversal position of the fasteners and the upward opening of the roof skylight.
[0016] The panel of the roof skylight may further comprise one or more plane sheets arranged below the lowest dome, and wherein a gasket is arranged between the lower surface of the flange of the lowest roof dome and the upper surface of the uppermost plane sheet, the gasket extending in the longitudinal direction of the glazing frame between the transversal position of the fasteners and the upward opening of the roof skylight. The plane sheets provide further thermal insulation, and the gasket ensures that humidity from the outside, such as rain, is prevented from entering between the roof domes and the plane sheets.
[0017] The fasteners may in a preferred embodiment comprise a hollow binding screw through which the fastener screws can extend, the binding screws comprising upper and lower bearing surfaces for abutting an upper outer surface and lower outer surface of the panel, respectively. Such binding screws allow for the panel to be assembled prior to being mounted on the glazing frame, which usually takes place onside at the roof. In particular, the binding screw may comprise a female, internally threaded barrel and a male, externally threaded screw, and wherein each of the barrel and the screw have heads providing the upper and lower bearing surfaces.
[0018] The glazing frame may be hinged to the curb to allow for opening of the roof skylight and possibly use it as a smoke vent and / or an escape opening in case of e.g. a fire in the building.Brief description of the figures
[0019] Embodiments of the present invention are shown in the enclosed figures of which Fig. 1 is a cross-section of a roof skylight according to a first embodiment of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of a roof skylight according to a second embodiment of the invention. Detailed description of the invention
[0020] The roof skylight 1 shown in cross-section in Fig. 1 comprises a panel 2 having two transparent roof domes 3, 4, of which the upper roof dome 3 is provided with a dome skirt 5 extending downwards at the edge of the roof dome 3 toward the roof surface (not shown).
[0021] The panel 2 is mounted on top of a curb 6 of the roof skylight 1. The curb 6 extends downwards to a roof surface (not shown) with an opening defined therein (not shown), which is enclosed by the curb 6. The upper edge 7 of the curb 6 is enclosed by a top frame 8 that is fastened to the curb 6. The top frame 8 extends down along a part of a sloping outer side 9 of the curb 6 to cover an upper edge of roofing felt (not shown).
[0022] A plurality of fasteners 10 comprise each a hollow binding screw 11 extending through the panel 2, i.e. the upper roof dome 3 and the lower roof dome 4. Fastener screws 12 extend through the hollow binding screws 11 and into the top frame 8, being a part of a glazing frame.
