Description

Title of the invention: METHOD FOR THERMAL MONITORING OF BATTERY MODULES

[0001] One aspect of the invention relates to a method for thermal monitoring of the traction battery modules of a vehicle. Another aspect of the invention relates to a vehicle, in particular a motor vehicle, constructed and arranged to implement the method according to the invention.

[0002] The invention lies in the field of thermal monitoring of the modules of a traction battery, in particular of a vehicle traction battery.

[0003] Rechargeable electric or hybrid vehicles are equipped with a traction battery. Such a traction battery is adapted to provide electrical power to an electric traction machine of the vehicle and is adapted to be recharged by receiving electrical power through a converter, a charging station or even an electric traction machine during regenerative braking.

[0004] The temperature of such a traction battery usually increases depending on the stress on it during charging or discharging. When the stress is too high, thermal runaway may occur in one of the modules in the battery. Such thermal runaway then spreads to the other adjacent modules.

[0005] For example, document FR-B1-3093028 discloses a method for managing an air conditioning circuit connected to a battery cooling circuit. According to this method, when the temperature of a traction battery exceeds a temperature threshold, a cooling circuit returns to its full operating potential to cool the vehicle's traction battery as much as possible, down to a temperature threshold below which the cooling circuit resumes its normal operation.

[0006] It should be noted, however, that a traction battery temperature may sometimes be acceptable even though the temperature of one of the traction battery modules is too high. In such a situation, the cooling circuit maintains its normal operation and does not allow the specific module that is overheating to be effectively cooled. This overheated module is thus not sufficiently cooled and risks catching fire, which then causes adjacent modules to catch fire.

[0007] The aim of the invention is to overcome the drawbacks of the prior art by proposing a method for thermal monitoring of the traction battery modules of a vehicle making it possible to eliminate any risk of thermal runaway of the traction battery.

[0008] In this context, the invention thus relates, in its broadest acceptance, to a method for thermal monitoring of the modules of a traction battery of a vehicle comprising the steps, executed by control means of the vehicle, of: • determining a temperature of each of the modules, • in a first malfunction situation in which the temperature of at least one of the modules is above a maximum temperature threshold over a first predetermined period of time, the method comprises the steps of: • display a warning light on a vehicle console, • limit or prohibit charging and discharging of the traction battery.

[0009] Thanks to the invention, it is possible to detect the temperature of each of the modules of a traction battery. When the temperature of one of the modules is too high, the performance of the battery, and consequently of the modules, is reduced so that the temperature of each of the modules is reduced. Thus, this method makes it possible to mitigate any risk of thermal degradation of the modules of the traction battery and makes it possible to avoid any risk of thermal runaway of the traction battery which would be due to a faulty module.

[0010] In addition to the characteristics which have just been mentioned in the preceding paragraph, the method according to the invention may have one or more complementary characteristics among the following, considered individually or according to all technically possible combinations.

[0011] According to a non-limiting aspect of the invention, the indicator light is a vehicle stop indicator light, and the step of limiting or prohibiting the charging and discharging of the traction battery comprises the steps of: • when the vehicle is in driving mode, prohibit electrical power supplied by the traction battery to an electric traction machine of the vehicle, • when the vehicle is in regenerative braking mode, prohibit electrical power supplied to the traction battery during regenerative braking, and • when the vehicle is in charging mode, prohibit a charging current from the traction battery.

[0012] According to a non-limiting aspect of the invention, in a second malfunction situation in which the temperature of the at least one module is above a minimum temperature threshold and below the maximum temperature threshold over a second predetermined period of time, the method comprises a step of displaying a malfunction indicator. This malfunction indicator reflects that the temperature of at least one of the modules is above the minimum temperature threshold.

[0013] According to a non-limiting aspect of the invention, the method comprises a step of turning off the malfunction indicator light: • when the temperature of each of the modules is lower than a first return temperature threshold lower than or equal to the minimum temperature threshold, or • when the temperature of each of the modules is lower than the first return temperature threshold over a third predetermined period of time.

[0014] According to a non-limiting aspect of the invention, in a third malfunction situation in which the temperature of the at least one module is, over a fourth predetermined period of time, above a first intermediate temperature threshold and below the maximum temperature threshold, the first intermediate temperature threshold being above the minimum temperature threshold, the method comprises the steps of: • display the malfunction indicator; • when the vehicle is in driving mode, limit, in a fifth predetermined time period, the electrical power supplied by the traction battery to the electric traction machine to a predetermined machine power; • when the vehicle is in regenerative braking mode, limit, in a sixth predetermined time period, the electrical power supplied to the traction battery during regenerative braking to a predetermined battery power; • when the vehicle is in charging mode, limit the charging current of the traction battery to a first predetermined charging current.

[0015] According to a non-limiting aspect of the invention, the method comprises, when the temperature of each of the modules is lower than a second return temperature threshold lower than the first intermediate temperature threshold over a seventh predetermined time period, the steps of: • stop the limitation of electrical power supplied by the traction battery to the electric traction machine at a predetermined machine power; • stop the limitation of electrical power supplied to the traction battery during regenerative braking at a predetermined battery power; or • stop limiting the charging current of the traction battery to a predetermined charging current.

[0016] According to a non-limiting aspect of the invention, in a fourth malfunction situation in which the temperature of the at least one module is, over an eighth predetermined time period, above a second intermediate temperature threshold and below the maximum temperature threshold, the second intermediate temperature threshold being higher than the first intermediate temperature threshold, the method comprises the steps of: • display the vehicle stop light, • when the vehicle is in driving mode, prohibit, in a ninth period predetermined time, the electrical power supplied by the traction battery to the electric traction machine; • when the vehicle is in regenerative braking mode, prohibit, in a tenth predetermined period of time, the electrical power supplied to the traction battery during regenerative braking; and • when the vehicle is in charging mode, prohibit the charging current from the traction battery.

[0017] According to a non-limiting aspect of the invention, the method comprises, when the temperature of each of the modules is lower than a third return temperature threshold lower than the second intermediate temperature threshold over an eleventh predetermined time period, the steps of: • turn off the vehicle's stop light; • stop the ban on electrical power supplied by the traction battery to the electric traction machine, • stop the prohibition of electrical power supplied to the traction battery during regenerative braking or; • stop the prohibition of the charging current of the traction battery.

[0018] According to a non-limiting aspect of the invention, the method comprises the steps of: • control electrical isolation of the traction battery from a high-voltage network of the vehicle, this electrical isolation being able to be achieved, for example, by opening isolation contactors which connect the traction battery to the high-voltage network of the vehicle; • carry out an active discharge of the vehicle's high voltage network.

[0019] According to another aspect, the invention relates to a vehicle comprising control means arranged to implement the method of thermal monitoring of the modules of a traction battery according to any one of the aforementioned aspects of the invention.

[0020] The invention and its various applications will be better understood by reading the following description and examining the accompanying figures.

[0021] [Fig.l] schematically illustrates a vehicle according to a non-limiting aspect of the invention.

[0022] [Fig.2] schematically represents a step diagram of a non-limiting mode of implementation of the method according to the invention.

[0023] [Fig. 1] illustrates a vehicle 1 in accordance with a non-limiting aspect of the invention. The vehicle 1 comprises in particular: • a traction battery 2 comprising several modules 3, each of the modules 3 comprising a plurality of cells, • an electric traction machine 4 allowing, on the one hand, to recharge the traction battery 2 during regenerative braking and, on the other hand, to rotate the wheels of the vehicle 1, • a converter 5, this converter 5 is, for example, a DC-DC converter used for converting the voltage between a high-voltage battery such as the traction battery 2, and a low-voltage battery such as a service battery (not shown), and furthermore incorporates an on-board charger, commonly referred to by those skilled in the art by the acronym OBC for “On Board Charger” in English, used for recharging the traction battery 2; and • control means 6 arranged to implement a method of thermal monitoring of the modules 3 of a traction battery 2 according to one aspect of the invention.

[0024] The control means 6 may for example comprise a vehicle control unit 7 (better known by the acronym VCU for Vehicle Control Unit in English) and a battery control system 8 (better known by the acronym BMS for Battery Management System in English).

[0025] [Fig.2] shows a step diagram of one embodiment of the method 100 according to the invention. The steps of the method 100 are executed by control means such as, for example, the control means 6 shown in [Fig.l].

[0026] The method 100 for thermal monitoring of the modules 3 of a traction battery 2 of a vehicle 1 comprises a step, executed for example by means of the battery control system 8, of determining 101 a temperature of each of the modules 3 of the traction battery 2. In a non-limiting manner, a module 3 may for example comprise twelve cells and six temperature sensors. In this embodiment, the battery control system 8 determines an average temperature of the module 3 from data measured by the six temperature sensors.

[0027] In a different non-limiting embodiment, the battery control system 8 identifies the highest measured temperature.

[0028] In a first malfunction situation, when the temperature of at least one of the modules 3 is beyond a maximum temperature threshold, for example between 60 and 70°C, typically 65°C, over a first predetermined period of time, for example between 2500 and 3500 milliseconds, typically 3000 milliseconds, the method 100 comprises the steps of: • display 102 a warning light on a console of vehicle 1, and • limit or prohibit 103 the charging and discharging of the traction battery 2.

[0029] In a non-limiting exemplary embodiment, the step of displaying 102 a warning light on a console of the vehicle, consists, for the battery control system 8, in transmitting a request to the vehicle control unit 7 to control a display of the warning light to alert the driver. The vehicle control unit 7 then controls a display of the warning light to alert the driver. This warning light may be formed by a vehicle stop warning light, typically a brake light.

[0030] In a non-limiting exemplary embodiment, the step of limiting or prohibiting 103 the charging and discharging of the traction battery 2 is executed by the battery control system 8 and comprises the steps of: • when the vehicle is in driving mode, prohibit 103a an electrical power supplied by the traction battery 2 to the electric traction machine 4, • when the vehicle is in regenerative braking mode, prohibit 103b electrical power supplied to the traction battery 2 during regenerative braking carried out by means of the electric traction machine 4, and • when the vehicle is in charging mode, prohibit 103c a charging current from the traction battery 2. This charging current can come from the voltage converter 5 or from a charging station.

[0031] In a non-limiting exemplary embodiment, the method 100 comprises a step of recording 104 a first malfunction code. This first malfunction code reflects that a temperature of at least one of the modules 3 is beyond the maximum temperature threshold. To this end, the battery control system 8 can record the first malfunction code in its read-only memory to indicate to the after-sales service the source of the malfunction.

[0032] The method 100 further comprises the steps of • control 105, via the battery control system 8, an electrical isolation of the traction battery 2 from a high voltage network of the vehicle 1, this electrical isolation being able to be carried out, for example, by opening isolation contactors which connect the traction battery 2 to the high voltage network (not illustrated) of the vehicle 1; • operate 106, via the vehicle control unit 7, an active discharge of the high voltage network of the vehicle. This step of operating 106 an active discharge of the high voltage network can be carried out at the end of a predetermined duration, for example between 500 and 1500 milliseconds, typically 1000 milliseconds, counted from the triggering of the step of controlling 105 an electrical isolation of the traction battery 2.

[0033] The step of controlling 105 an electrical isolation of the traction battery 2 can be carried out by controlling the opening of isolation contactors (not illustrated) of the traction battery 2.

[0034] Without limitation, these isolation contactors can be formed by: • a first contactor connected to a positive output of the traction battery 2 and a positive input of the electric traction machine 4, of the converter 5 as well as to a charging station; • a second contactor connected to a negative output of the traction battery 2 and to a negative input of the electric traction machine 4, of the converter 5 as well as to the charging station.

[0035] These contactors are circuit breaker type contactors: • when they are closed, the current flows from the traction battery 2 to the electrical components of the vehicle, in other words the current can flow in the high voltage network of the vehicle 1; • when they are open, the traction battery 2 is electrically isolated from the high voltage network of the vehicle 1.

[0036] Thus, by controlling the opening of these contactors, the traction battery 2 is electrically isolated and is no longer electrically stressed.

[0037] For the remainder of the description, active discharge of the high-voltage network is understood to mean the elimination of the residual voltage present in the high-voltage network. For this purpose, this residual voltage can be transformed into heat in the electric traction machine 4 as well as in the converter 5. This reduces the residual voltage of the high-voltage network from 400V to less than 60V. This residual voltage is thus eliminated between the isolating contactors and the electric traction machine 4, the isolating contactors and the converter 5 as well as between the isolating contactors and the charging station.

[0038] In a second malfunction situation, when the temperature of at least one of the modules 3 is above a minimum temperature threshold, for example between 50 and 52°C, typically 51°C, and below the maximum temperature threshold, 65°C in our example, over a second predetermined period of time, for example between 4500 and 5500 milliseconds, typically 5000 milliseconds, the method 100 comprises a step of displaying 107 an indicator light malfunction indicator light on the vehicle console. The malfunction indicator light reflects a high temperature of at least one of the modules. For example, a temperature above the minimum temperature threshold.

[0039] The malfunction indicator light may be a service indicator light inviting the driver to have a diagnosis carried out at the garage.

[0040] In a non-limiting exemplary embodiment, the method 100 comprises a step of recording 108 a second malfunction code. This second malfunction code reflects that a temperature of at least one of the modules 3 is beyond the minimum temperature threshold. To this end, the battery control system 8 can record the second malfunction code in its read-only memory to indicate to the after-sales service the source of the malfunction.

[0041] The method 100 further comprises a step of turning off 109 the malfunction indicator light when the temperature of each of the modules 3 is lower than a first return threshold lower than or equal to the minimum temperature threshold, for example 50°C, over a third predetermined period of time, for example between 4500 and 5500 milliseconds, typically 5000 milliseconds.

[0042] In a third malfunction situation, when the temperature of at least one of the modules 3 is, over a fourth predetermined time period, for example between 4500 and 5500 milliseconds, typically 5000 milliseconds, beyond a first intermediate temperature threshold, for example between 54 and 56°C, typically 55°C, and lower than the maximum temperature threshold, 65°C in our example, said first intermediate temperature threshold being higher than the minimum temperature threshold, 51°C in our example, the method 100 comprises the steps of: • display 110 malfunction indicator; • when the vehicle is in driving mode, limit 111 the electrical power supplied by the traction battery 2 to the electric traction machine 4 of the vehicle 1 to a predetermined machine power, for example between 8 and 9kW, typically 8.5kW; the limitation being carried out over a fifth predetermined time period, for example between 50 and 70 seconds, typically 60 seconds; • when the vehicle is in regenerative braking mode, limit 112 the electrical power supplied to the traction battery 2 during regenerative braking to a predetermined battery power, for example between 8 and 9kW, typically 8.5kW; the limitation being carried out over a sixth predetermined time period, for example between 50 and 70 seconds, typically 60 seconds; • when the vehicle is in charging mode, limit 113 a charging current of the traction battery 2 to a first predetermined charging current, this predetermined charging current can for example be between 40 and 60%, typically 50%, of the authorized charging current when no malfunction is detected.

[0043] In a non-limiting exemplary embodiment, the limitation of the electrical power supplied by the traction battery 2 to the electric traction machine 4 of the vehicle 1 to a predetermined machine power and the limitation of the electrical power supplied to the traction battery 2 during regenerative braking to a predetermined battery power are carried out in a linear manner.

[0044] In a non-limiting exemplary embodiment, the step of displaying 110 a malfunction indicator light on a console of the vehicle consists, for the battery control system 8, in transmitting a request to the vehicle control unit 7 to control a display of the indicator light to alert the driver. The vehicle control unit 7 then controls a display of the indicator light to alert the driver.

[0045] In a non-limiting exemplary embodiment, the method 100 comprises a step of recording 114 a third malfunction code. This third malfunction code reflects that a temperature of at least one of the modules 3 is beyond the first intermediate temperature threshold. To this end, the battery control system 8 can record the third malfunction code in its read-only memory to indicate to the after-sales service the source of the malfunction.

[0046] The method 100 further comprises, when the temperature of all the modules 3 is lower than a second return temperature threshold lower than the first intermediate temperature threshold, for example between 52 and 54°C, typically 53°C, over a seventh predetermined time period, for example between 4500 and 5500 milliseconds, typically 5000 milliseconds, the steps of: • stop 115 the limitation of electrical power supplied by the traction battery 2 to the electric traction machine 4 of the vehicle 1 to a predetermined machine power; • stop 116 the limitation of electrical power supplied to the traction battery during regenerative braking to a predetermined battery power; or • stop 117 the limitation of the charging current of the traction battery to a predetermined charging current.

[0047] Therefore, as long as the temperature of the modules 3 is below the second return temperature, 53°C in our example, and above the minimum temperature threshold, 51°C in our example, the process is in the second situation malfunction indicator. In other words, the malfunction indicator light is kept displayed.

[0048] In a fourth malfunction situation, when the temperature of at least one of the modules is, over an eighth predetermined time period, for example between 2500 and 3500 milliseconds, typically 3000 milliseconds, beyond a second intermediate temperature threshold, for example between 56°C and 58°C, typically 57°C, and lower than the maximum temperature threshold, 65°C in our example, the second intermediate temperature threshold, 57°C in our example, being higher than the first intermediate temperature threshold, 55°C in our example, the method 100 comprises the steps of: • display 118 the vehicle stop light on the vehicle console, • when the vehicle is in driving mode, prohibit 119 the electrical power supplied by the traction battery to the electric traction machine, the prohibition being carried out over a ninth predetermined time period, for example between 50 and 70 seconds, typically 60 seconds in our example; • when the vehicle is in regenerative braking mode, prohibit 120 the electrical power supplied to the traction battery 2 during regenerative braking, the prohibition being carried out over a tenth predetermined period of time, for example between 50 and 70 seconds, typically 60 seconds in our example; and • when vehicle 1 is in charging mode, prohibit 121 the charging current of traction battery 2.

[0049] In a non-limiting exemplary embodiment, the prohibition of the electrical power supplied by the traction battery 2 to the electric traction machine 4 of the vehicle 1 and the prohibition of the electrical power supplied to the traction battery 2 during regenerative braking are carried out in a linear manner.

[0050] In a non-limiting exemplary embodiment, the method 100 comprises a step of recording 122 a fourth malfunction code reflecting that a temperature of at least one of the modules 3 is beyond the second intermediate temperature threshold. To this end, the battery control system 8 can record the fourth malfunction code in its read-only memory to indicate to the after-sales service the source of the malfunction.

[0051] The method 100 further comprises the steps of: • control 123, via the battery control system 8, an electrical isolation of the traction battery 2 from the high voltage network of the vehicle 1, this electrical isolation being able to be carried out, for example, by opening the isolation contactors which connect the traction battery 2 to the high voltage network of the vehicle 1; • operate 124, via the vehicle control unit 7, an active discharge of the high voltage network of the vehicle. This step of operating 124 an active discharge of the high voltage network can be carried out at the end of a predetermined duration, for example between 80 and 100 seconds, typically 90 seconds, counted from the triggering of the step of controlling 123 an electrical isolation of the traction battery 2.

[0052] The method 100 further comprises, when the temperature of the modules 3 is lower than a third return threshold lower than the second intermediate temperature threshold, for example between 54 and 56°C, typically 55°C, over an eleventh predetermined time period, for example between 4500 and 5500 milliseconds, typically 5000 milliseconds, the steps of: • turn off the vehicle stop light; • stop 126 the prohibition of electrical power supplied by the traction battery 2 to the electric traction machine 4, • stop 127 the prohibition of electrical power supplied to the traction battery 2 during regenerative braking; or • stop 128 the prohibition of the charging current of the traction battery 2.

[0053] Therefore, as long as the temperature of the modules 3 is below the third return temperature, 55°C in our example, as well as below the second return temperature, 53°C in our example, and above the minimum temperature threshold, 51°C in our example, the process is in the second malfunction situation. In other words, the malfunction indicator is displayed.

[0054] The various aspects of the invention mentioned above have numerous advantages. Among these, we can cite: • guarantee the operation of the modules 3 of the traction battery 2 at a temperature level which ensures the integrity of the modules 3 and the safety of users and the vehicle with regard to the risk of fire in the traction battery, • by ensuring the integrity of the modules 3, the user is assured that he will not have to change his traction battery 2 due to thermal damage to one of the modules 3 of the traction battery 2. In fact, the modules 3 of a traction battery 2 cannot be changed; if there is a fault on the traction battery 2, it is necessary to replace the traction battery 2.

[0055] It should be noted that a person skilled in the art is able to make different variations to the aforementioned aspects of the invention, for example by modifying the value of the different temperature thresholds as well as the different time periods.
