Description

Title of the invention: Front bumper of a motor vehicle

[0001] The invention relates to an assembly for a bumper system of a motor vehicle. The invention also relates to a motor vehicle with a bumper system.

[0002] A motor vehicle comprises a front bumper system. This system has a bumper skin formed of one or more outer panels. These outer panels define the external envelope of the vehicle. Generally speaking, the outer panels must meet different repairability criteria depending on the speed of the impacts that they are likely to absorb. For example, for a low-speed impact, the front bumper system is designed to absorb the impact by elastic deformation, thus without requiring subsequent repair. By low speed, we mean an impact at a speed less than or equal to 10 km / h. During this impact, the bumper skin deforms elastically upon contact with the obstacle, then returns to its position, without any permanent deformation remaining after the obstacle involved in the impact has moved away.

[0003] The bumper system commonly comprises one or more shock-absorbing modules at the front of the structure of the motor vehicle. The modules comprise, among other things, an absorber formed from a transverse body. This absorber is capable of deforming and absorbing the energy of a collision. Such an absorber is generally arranged behind and close to the bumper skin. Its proximity to the latter exposes it and involves it during pedestrian impact type events. Indeed, in such a case, a pedestrian's leg sinks into the bumper skin and strikes against the transverse body. This creates a risk of injury,

[0004] A bumper frame is used to maintain the bumper skin. The frame is an essentially rigid element that maintains the shape of the bumper skin, which is generally made of a plastic material. This frame is commonly attached above the absorber. It also comes into play in the event of a pedestrian impact.

[0005] Document FR3117429A1 describes a motor vehicle having a rear bumper device. The bumper device comprises a bumper skin which includes an outer face and an inner face, an absorption means arranged on the side of the inner face of the skin and intended to be opposite a bumper beam when the bumper device is installed on a vehicle, so as to bear against said beam in the event of impacts against the outer face of the bumper skin. The absorption means is made of the same material as the bumper skin.

[0006] One or more stiffening elements, commonly called skin reinforcement bumpers, are fixed behind the bumper skin. The role of this frame is to give stiffness to the bumper skin. Generally, a gap exists between this frame or the bumper skin, and the rear bumper beam, because the curvature of the bumper skin or frame is greater than that of the bumper beam. Such a solution facilitates assembly by rationalizing the number of parts.

[0007] Document FR3072342A1 presents a vehicle comprising, in the front part, two gussets each arranged on one side of said vehicle, a cooling system extending between the two gussets and a front bumper device extending in front of said gussets, said bumper device comprising an upper part comprising a bumper beam, and a lower part comprising a lower absorber extending from one side of the vehicle to the other, the vehicle being remarkable in that the lower absorber has a rear face comprising at least one ramp in the form of an inclined surface oriented from bottom to top and in the direction of the front of the vehicle, said ramp being arranged at least partly opposite the cooling system. This document makes it possible to reduce damage in the event of a collision.

[0008] In order to optimize their support, it is known to fix a support frame to a shock absorber. However, there is a need to further improve this support.

[0009] The invention aims to address at least one of the problems or drawbacks encountered in the prior art. In particular, the invention aims to improve the retention between a bumper skin frame and a shock absorber. The invention also aims to optimize the transport, retention, ease of assembly and cost of a bumper system of a motor vehicle bumper system.

[0053] [Fig.l] represents a motor vehicle 10 according to the invention. The motor vehicle 10 comprises energy storage means and at least one motor (not shown) adapted to drive said motor vehicle 10.

[0054] The motor vehicle 10 comprises a structure 12, also called a body. The structure 12 forms a framework and supports various components of the motor vehicle 10, including the engine and openings. The structure 12 partially forms the bodywork 14 of the vehicle at the level of the roof, the front wings, the pillars. The bodywork 14 forms the external envelope of the motor vehicle 10. The structure 12 can be formed from different stamped and welded sheets. It has various beams such as side members.

[0055] The motor vehicle 10 further comprises a bumper system 16, for example a front bumper system. The bumper system 16 may form the front facade of the motor vehicle 10. The bumper system 16, in particular each of its elements, is adapted to withstand impacts, at speeds up to 10 km / h, preferably up to 15 km / s; without there being any need to replace specific parts of the vehicle. The bumper system 16 is also adapted to avoid injury, or limit the extent of possible injuries in the event of a pedestrian impact.

[0056] The bumper system 16 comprises an assembly 18. The assembly 18 is understood as a group of parts or pieces of the bumper system 16. The motor vehicle 10 also comprises a front flap 20, commonly called an engine hood depending on the type of vehicle. The front flap 20 is pivotally mounted on the structure 12 between an open position and a closed position.

[0057] The motor vehicle 10 further has at least one lighting device 22. The lighting devices 22 may be regulatory lighting devices. Each lighting device 22 is capable of illuminating the environment at a distance from the motor vehicle 10 for driving comfort, and is capable of emitting light signals for the attention of other users.

[0058] The bumper system 16 comprises a bumper skin 24. The bumper skin 24 materializes a front shield. The bumper skin 24 may be a single piece. It may be formed from a single outer panel. The bumper skin 24 receives an outer coating such as a layer of paint in the color of the motor vehicle 10. The bumper skin 24 extends to the front flap 20 and to the side wings (not shown). According to an alternative, the bumper skin is formed from a plurality of outer panels.

[0059] The bumper skin 24 delimits various openings, including openings for the lighting devices 22. The bumper skin 24 also delimits air inlet openings. The air inlet openings make it possible to supply air to a combustion engine or a temperature control system. These air inlet openings are equipped with splash guards. The air inlet openings comprise, for example, a lower opening 26, and at least one upper opening 28; the latter being optionally split into two or more.

[0060] The assembly 18 comprises a holding frame 30. The holding frame 30 forms a substructure supporting the bumper skin 24. It reinforces it. It is fixed there at several points distributed transversely. The holding frame 30 extends transversely at least over half of the bumper skin 24. The holding frame 30 goes around the upper openings 28. It extends transversely to the light devices 22. It extends vertically to the upper edge 32 of the bumper skin 24, and optionally extends above. The upper edge 32 matches the lower edge or front edge of the front flap 20.

[0061] The assembly 18 comprises a shock absorber 34 which comprises a transverse body 36 such as a transverse bar. The shock absorber 34 is fixed to the structure 12 of the motor vehicle 10. For example, it is fixed to the front ends of front stretchers, forming front side members (not shown) of the structure 12. This fixing is carried out by means of a cross member 38, also called a transverse beam, which is fixed to the front stretchers. Deformable boxes, also known by the English expression “crash box” can be added to the fixing interface.

[0062] The shock absorber 34 is arranged in front of the cross member 38. It can form a upper absorber. The assembly 18 may also include a lower absorber; beneath the upper absorber. Each absorber is configured to absorb energy in the event of a pedestrian impact. For this purpose, it includes a foam material.

[0063] The retaining frame 30 is fixed to the transverse body 36 of the shock absorber 34. They are superimposed and are arranged behind the bumper skin 24. The retaining frame 30 is arranged above said crossmember 38. The shock absorber 34 and optionally the crossmember 38 are vertically between the lower opening 26 and the group of upper openings 28.

[0064] The motor vehicle may, for example, be a private motor vehicle or a utility motor vehicle.

[0065] [Fig.2] shows an assembly 18 for a vehicle bumper system 16 at car. The motor vehicle may correspond to that shown in relation to [Fig.l]. The shock absorber is not shown for the sake of clarity.

[0066] The assembly 18 comprises a holding frame 30. The upper openings 28 of the bumper skin 24 are shown. The lower opening 26 is provided with a grid. The grid is formed of a mesh screen 40 fixed to the rear face of the bumper skin 24. The mesh screen 40 is across the lower opening 26. It masks it. Another mesh screen 40 covers the upper opening 28.

[0067] The holding frame 30 comprises at least one, for example several, fixing devices 42. The fixing devices 42 are intended to fix the shock absorber. They extend vertically. The fixing devices 42 each form a clamp for gripping the shock absorber. The fixing devices 42 are lateral devices. They are symmetrical along a vertical and longitudinal plane. The fixing devices 42 are identical or similar. The fixing devices 42 are useful for holding the shock absorber in the motor vehicle as mounted. They are also useful during the transport phase of the assembly 18, before mounting on the structure of the motor vehicle. They have a dual utility.

[0068] The retaining frame 30 delimits a transverse receiving zone 44 for the shock absorber. The transverse receiving zone 44 is horizontal. It is delimited by the fixing devices 42. The transverse receiving zone 44 is a mounting zone for the shock absorber. It is vertically between the lower opening 26 and the upper openings 28.

[0069] At least one or each fixing device 42 has a first holding portion 46 and a second holding portion 48. The holding portions may be horizontal. They are superimposed. They are connected by a straight or arched or bent joining portion.

[0070] For at least one or each fixing device 42, the first holding portion 46 and the second holding portion 48 are vertically between the upper openings 28 on the one hand, and the lower opening 26 on the other hand. Thus, the invention manages to integrate a solution for mounting the shock absorber despite the physical constraint linked to the presence of openings. The invention provides a compact solution. At least one or each second holding portion 48 is arranged vertically above the mesh screen 40, in particular the lower one.

[0071] The retaining frame 30 further comprises retention means 50 transversely between the first fixing device 42 and the second fixing device 42. The retention means 50 comprise third holding portions vertically at the first holding portions 46. The third holding portions may be identical to the first holding portions. This aspect facilitates the mounting of the shock absorber in its transverse receiving zone 44.

[0072] [Fig. 3] shows a retaining frame 30 of an assembly for a motor vehicle bumper system. The motor vehicle may correspond to that shown in relation to one of Figures 1 to 2. Only one half of the retaining frame 30 is shown, however the present teaching applies to the other half by symmetry.

[0073] The retaining frame 30 is a single piece. It is preferably made in one piece. It is produced by injection. On the front face, the retaining frame 30 has various fixing means 52 intended to cooperate with the bumper skin. They can be fixed to the upper edge of the bumper skin. The fixing means 52 comprise, for example, snap-fastening devices.

[0074] The holding frame 30 has at least one air inlet duct 54. Each air inlet duct 54 is vertically above the transverse receiving zone 44. It forms a longitudinal passage which can communicate with one of the upper openings. The transverse receiving zone 44 is bordered vertically by the lower edge 56 of the holding frame 30. The lower edge 56 is substantially horizontal. It extends transversely.

[0075] The fixing device 42 is vertically at the transverse receiving zone 44. It can extend over its entire height. The fixing device 42 comprises a first holding portion 46 and a second holding portion 48. They can be an upper holding portion and a lower holding portion respectively. The fixing device 42 further has a joining portion 58. The joining portion 58 comprises a vertical plate. It can be a front portion of the fixing device 42. It can be of constant thickness to increase its flexibility, and therefore facilitate the introduction of the shock absorber into the fixing devices 42.

[0076] The first holding portion 46 comprises a first retaining hook 60, and the second holding portion 48 comprises a second retaining hook 62. Each hook comprises a retention direction towards the joining portion 58. The retention direction is opposite the direction of insertion into the fixing device 42. Thanks to the two hooks, the fixing device 42 forms a holding clamp. This arrangement optimizes ease of assembly and holding stability. The hooks comprise abutment surfaces facing the joining portion 58.

[0077] The joining portion 58 extends under and from the first holding portion 46. The second holding portion 48 projects from the joining portion 58. It is vertically opposite the first holding portion 46. These portions are superimposed, and vertically offset.

[0078] [Fig. 4] shows an assembly 18 for a bumper system 16 of a motor vehicle. The motor vehicle may correspond to that shown in relation to one of FIGS. 1 to 3.

[0079] The assembly 18 comprises: a bumper skin 24; a retaining frame 30 for the bumper skin 24 and a shock absorber 34 which is nested in the retaining frame 30, more precisely in a transverse receiving zone 44 of the latter. It is embedded therein.

[0080] The holding frame 30 comprises a fixing device 42 with a first holding portion 46 on the upper face of the shock absorber 34, a joining portion 58 on the front face of the shock absorber 34; a second holding portion 48 on the lower face of the shock absorber 34. These portions define a lying “U”, open towards the rear. The joining portion 58 is in front of the holding portions (46; 48), it connects them vertically.

[0081] The shock absorber 34 comprises an expanded material, which optimizes its mass and its ability to absorb a pedestrian impact against a leg. The shock absorber 34 is a single-piece structure. The shock absorber 34 is arranged on the rear face of the bumper skin 24. It is locally separated therefrom by the joining portion 58. The shock absorber 34 forms a front lining of the bumper skin (not shown). It extends transversely over its entire width. It is capable of supporting and holding the bumper skin in position; at least on the front face.

[0082] The shock absorber 34 has a transverse body 36 in the receiving zone transverse 44. The shock absorber 34 comprising a lower housing 64. The lower housing 64 is formed on the lower face of the shock absorber 34. The second holding portion 48 is integrated into said lower housing 64. According to one option, the lower housing 64 comprises a depth, and the second holding portion 48 comprises a thickness less than or equal to said depth. The depth and the thickness are measured vertically. Thus, the second holding portion 48 is included in the shock absorber 34, which avoids forming points hard. This increases safety and protects the health of pedestrians who may be hit by the system 16.

[0083] The crossmember 38 has a front surface 66. This front surface 66 may be vertical. The second holding portion 48 comprises a rear end 68 facing the front surface 66. According to one option, the rear end 68 is against the front surface 66 of the crossmember 38. In the event of a pedestrian impact at the location of the fixing device 42, the bumper skin 24 sinks and transmits its deformation to the second holding portion 48 which crushes against the crossmember 38. This promotes its programmed rupture, and avoids the persistence of hard points.

[0084] The bumper skin 24 comprises an upper edge 32 also forming its rear edge. The retaining frame 30 extends vertically above this upper edge 32, and also extends rearwardly. The second retaining portion 48 is vertically between the mesh screen 40 of the lower opening 26 and the mesh screen 40 of the upper opening 28. Thus, its presence does not disturb the flow entering the assembly 18.

[0085] The second holding portion 48 extends from the joining portion 58 and away from the bumper skin 24. The joining portion 58 is against the bumper skin 24. It forms an interlayer. The joining portion 58 has a constant thickness between the first holding portion 46 and the second holding portion 48. This elasticity facilitates the introduction of the shock absorber 34.

[0086] [Fig. 5] shows a section of a second holding portion 48 of a fixing device 42 of an assembly for a motor vehicle bumper system. The motor vehicle may correspond to that shown in relation to one of Figures 1 to 4.

[0087] The retaining frame 30 comprises a device 42 for fixing the shock absorber 34 inside the bumper skin 24. The fixing device 42 comprises a second hollowed-out retaining portion 48. It forms a hollow body. It extends towards the crossmember 38 from the junction portion 58.

[0088] The shock absorber 34 is formed of a transverse body 36 in the transverse receiving zone 44. The shock absorber 34 comprises a lower housing 64. The lower housing 64 forms a longitudinal lower groove. The lower housing 64 passes longitudinally through the shock absorber 34. The second holding portion 48 is inserted therein. It passes longitudinally through the lower housing 64.

[0089] The second holding portion 48 comprises a longitudinal length 70, for example measured from the junction portion 58. The shock absorber 34 comprises a longitudinal thickness 72 greater than or equal to or substantially equal to the longitudinal length 70. The equality is not strict. The longitudinal length 70 may re present from 90% to 110%, preferably from 95% to 105%, of the longitudinal thickness 72. The longitudinal thickness 72 can be measured at the level of the second holding portion 48. As for the longitudinal length 70, these can be average values.

[0090] The material of the shock absorber 34 comprises a first density, for example 0.2; and the material of the frame 30 comprises a second density, for example 1.5, at least five times greater than the first density; preferably at least ten times greater than the first density. The material of the shock absorber 34 is advantageously expanded polypropylene (EPP). When crushed, it absorbs the energy of the impact. Thus, the shock absorber can be single-use.

[0091] In the longitudinal direction, the second holding portion 48 comprises a first section 74 with a first width 76, a second section 78 with a second width 80 less than the first width 76, and a longitudinally bent section 82 between the first section 74 and the second section 78. The bent section 82 forms a joining section. The first width 76 and the second width 80 may be external widths. The first section 74 comprises an internal width 84 greater than the second width 80. The widths are measured transversely. They may be maximum or average widths.

[0092] Thus, in the event of an impact against a leg 86 at the right angle of the second holding portion 48, the latter breaks at the level of the bent section 82 which forms a fusible zone, i.e., effecting a programmed break in this scenario. The first section 74 detaches from the second section 78 and slides relative to the latter. It moves rearward, into the lower housing 64. These sections (74; 78) retract telescopically. The second section 78 remains in position when it is in abutment against the crosspiece 38. Consequently, the break eliminates a hard point, and avoids or limits hypothetical injuries to the leg 86. Therefore, the invention preserves the health of pedestrians. It optimizes safety and support.

[0093] According to a preferred embodiment, the frame and / or the bumper skin are made of a plastic or composite material. The plastic material may comprise a thermoplastic material or a thermosetting material. According to a preferred embodiment, the plastic material is selected from the group comprising polypropylene, polyamide, polyphthalamide, polyetheretherketone, polyphenylene sulfide, polyamideimide, polyetherimide, polyarylamide, polyepoxide, unsaturated polyester, vinylester or polyester-vinylester resins. For example, the composite material comprises a matrix of a plastic material as described above with a reinforcement. For example, the reinforcement comprises glass or carbon fibers.

[0094] The invention comprises the combination of all the embodiments presented by all figures.

[0095] Figures 2 to 5 are isometric views. They each respect their own scale.
