Portable ventilator system

A portable ventilator uses a Roots-type blower as a compressor to reduce both the size and power consumption of the ventilator. Various functional aspects of the ventilator are delegated to multiple subassemblies having dedicated controllers and software that interact with a ventilator processor to provide user interface functions, exhalation control and flow control servos, and monitoring of patient status. The ventilator overcomes noise problems through the use of noise reducing pressure compensating orifices on the Roots blower housing and multiple baffling chambers. The ventilator is configured with a highly portable form factor, and may be used as a stand-alone device or as a docked device having a docking cradle with enhanced interface and monitoring capabilities.

A seating unit includes a back support with a perimeter frame defining an opening, and a plurality of resilient members spanning the opening. An upholstery cover extends over and covers the resilient members and a front of the perimeter frame. A bow-tie-shaped lumbar device is positioned between the cover and sides of the perimeter frame for vertical adjustment. The lumbar device includes a body with end sections defining a greater dimension than a middle of the body. Upper and lower edges of the end sections are thin and serve to wedgingly slip between the cover and the resilient members in a manner leading the middle over irregular surfaces between the resilient members. A thick area between the upper and lower edges causes a change in lumbar support force and shape as the lumbar device is adjusted. Handles are attached to the body by stretchable fabric.

A buttocks seat is supported by a post tiltably affixed at a lower end to an upper face of a base. The post is also axially rotatable relative to the base, and threadably engaged with an underside of the seat for supporting the seat on the post, the seat squarely facing upright when the post is vertical. A hand wheel is affixed to the post for rotating the post relative to the seat and the base for selectively raising or lowering the seat relative to the base. A resilient bias urges the post to be vertical unless a seated user flexes his or her lumbar with sufficient force to overcome the bias. Preferably the post is tiltable over a conical range and the bias comprises a resiliently compressible, cylindrical ring coaxial with the post, and extending between and abutting the base and the underside of the seat.

Back support for seat-backs, in particular for motor vehicle seats

A lumbar support for seat backs, in particular of motor vehicle seats, has a forward-bowed support plate (1). The support plate (1) is height-adjustable, moving upward and downward on guide organs that are fixed with respect to the seat back, and is also variable in its curvature through the use of a motor-driven tension bracket that can be lengthened or shortened. The tension bracket consists of bracket regions (3a and 3b) that act on upper end region (1a) and lower end region (1b) of the support plate (1). The bracket regions have thread regions of opposite handedness pointing toward one another which are externally engaged by a common rotatable sleeve (11) with appropriately designed meshing areas. The drive motor (10) is fixed to a gear case (2) arranged behind the support plate (1). The motor (10) drives gear wheels of a gearbox whose final gear wheel (13a) stands in engagement with the sleeve (11). The sleeve has inside thread regions of opposite handedness.

Method and apparatus for reducing noise in a roots-type blower

A Roots-type blower comprises a housing defining a rotor chamber and an inlet and outlet to the rotor chamber. First and second rotors are mounted in the rotor chamber, each rotor defining a plurality of lobes, adjacent lobes and the housing cooperating to define gas transport chambers. The blower is configured so that a net flow rate of gas into a gas transport chamber is generally or approximately constant, whereby a change in gas pressure in the gas transport chamber is generally or approximately linear, as the gas transport chamber approaches the outlet. In one embodiment, this is accomplished by providing flow channels extending from the outlet towards the inlet, and from the inlet towards the outlet, corresponding to each rotor. The flow channels permit gas to flow from the high pressure outlet to a gas transport chamber and from the gas transport chamber to the low pressure inlet. The resulting amelioration of pressure spikes associated with flow back substantially reduces the operational noise level of the blower.

An exercise and rehabilitation chair includes a framework having lower frame members, pivotal front legs, and elongate rear legs. The chair includes a seat assembly having a seat bottom and seat back and upper arms, each upper arm being pivotally coupled at one end to a generally upstanding support arm and at an opposed end to a front leg. Bearing housings pivotally connect corresponding support arms and rear legs and establish a fulcrum about which the seat assembly may rotate. The bearing housings may be slidably positioned longitudinally along corresponding support arms and rear legs using pin fasteners or, alternatively, using motorized gear assemblies. The displacement of the fulcrum relative to a user's hips is adjustable for regulating the resistance of chair operation. A foot assembly is pivotally coupled to the front legs. All pivotal connections correspond anatomically to a user's joints for low joint stress and low-resistance exercise.

Compressor control system for a portable ventilator

A method and apparatus for controlling a brushless DC (BLDC) motor over a wide range of angular speeds is presented. Analog magnetic sensors provide continuous signal measurements related to the rotor angular position at a sample rate independent of rotor angular speed. In one embodiment, analog signal measurements are subsequently processed using an arctangent function to obtain the rotor angular position. The arctangent may be computed using arithmetic computation, a small angle approximation, a polynomial evaluation approach, a table lookup approach, or a combination of various methods. In one embodiment, the BLDC rotor is used to drive a Roots blower used as a compressor in a portable mechanical ventilator system.

Powered Glider Recliner Linkage Mechanism

A glider-recliner-style seating unit (glider recliner) that includes a linkage mechanism adapted to move the glider recliner between closed, extended, and reclined positions is provided. The glider recliner is powered by a linear actuator that facilitates automated adjustment of the linkage mechanism. This adjustment of the linear actuator is sequenced into a first phase and a second phase. A stroke of the linear actuator in the first phase acts to adjust the linkage mechanism between the closed and extended positions by extending or retracting ottoman(s) attached to a footrest assembly. A stroke in the second phase acts to adjust the linkage mechanism between the extended and reclined positions by translating a seat-mounting plate forward or rearward at a consistent inclination angle while, concurrently, tilting a back-mounting link. Accordingly, the phase sequencing ensures that the linkage mechanism commences adjustment within the second phase only once the first-phase adjustment is substantially complete.
