Description

Title of the invention: SYSTEM FOR MOVING A HYDROFOIL IN TRANSLATION AND ROTATION FOR A HYDROFOIL TECHNICAL FIELD AND PRIOR ART

[0001] The present invention relates to a system for moving a hydrofoil for a hydrofoil in translation and rotation, to enable it to be raised and, for example, aligned with the axis of the hydrofoil, and the present invention also relates to a hydrofoil comprising at least one such system.

[0002] A hydrofoil is a boat whose hull is equipped with foils. The speed of movement of the boat generates hydrodynamic lift on the foil(s) capable of lifting the hull of the boat partially or completely out of the water, which has the effect of reducing the drag of the hull and reducing the power required for cruising speed.

[0003] This reduction in the power required therefore makes it possible to reduce the energy required to move the boat.

[0004] In view of the ecological challenges facing the world, the hydrofoil appears to be a very interesting alternative in maritime transport.

[0005] Electrically powered hydrofoils have been developed and are contributing to the transition towards reducing the use of fossil fuels. Such hydrofoils also generate very little noise pollution compared to conventional boats. Hydrofoils therefore offer a remarkable transport experience for passengers.

[0006] The inventors have developed a hydrofoil comprising at least one hydrofoil that can move in translation and rotation. Thus, at low speed, the hydrofoil is positioned close to the hull and aligned with the longitudinal axis of the boat, thus reducing drag and making it possible to navigate, for example, in marinas without being hindered by the bulk of the hydrofoil; at high speed, the hydrofoil is moved away from the hull and is oriented orthogonally to the longitudinal axis of the boat; the boat then flies above the water, resting on the hydrofoil. The aim is to provide a mechanism for moving the hydrofoil in translation and rotation with a reduced number of actuators. Statement of the invention

[0007] It is therefore an aim of the present application to provide a system for translational and rotational movement of a hydrofoil.

[0008] The aim stated above is achieved by a system of translational and rotation of a hydrofoil for a hydrofoil comprising a tube with a longitudinal axis, in which a mast will slide and pivot at a first end of which a hydrofoil is fixed. The second end of the mast cooperates with the movement system. The system also comprises at least one guide rail fixed on the inner face of the wall of the tube, which extends in the longitudinal direction of the tube, said rail comprising at least one helical portion. The system further comprises a carriage to which the second end of the mast is fixed, which cooperates with the guide rail. The system also comprises a worm screw system for moving the carriage. The movement of the carriage by cooperation with the worm screw system and the profile of the guide rail causes the displacement of the mast and the hydrofoil in translation along the longitudinal direction and at least partly in rotation about the longitudinal direction.

[0009] Thus the system can ensure both the translation and the rotation of the hydrofoil in a relatively compact manner and by implementing a single actuator.

[0010] Very advantageously, the longitudinal ends of the guide rail are straight and parallel to the guide axis, limiting the risks of unwanted movements of the hydrofoil under the action of the rotational forces applied by the water to the hydrofoil.

[0011] The worm screw system can also advantageously be irreversible to limit the risks of unwanted movements.

[0012] In a preferred example, the worm screw system comprises two threaded rods arranged diametrically opposite to the axis of the tube, which allows the central space to be left free for the passage of the mast.

[0013] The present invention then relates to a system for moving in translation and rotation a hydrofoil for a hydrofoil provided with a hull, between a first position remote from the hull and a second position close to the hull, said system comprising a cylindrical housing of revolution with a longitudinal axis, comprising a lower base and an upper base, at least one guide rail fixed on the inner face of the housing and extending from the lower base to the upper base, a worm screw system activated by drive means, a carriage cooperating with the worm screw system and cooperating with the at least one guide rail, said at least one guide rail comprising at least one circular propeller portion with a longitudinal axis, said carriage being intended to be fixed to a mast carrying the hydrofoil and the lower base comprising a through passage for said mast,so that in the second position the mast is at least partly received in said housing.

[0014] Preferably, the worm screw system comprises at least two threaded rods parallel to the longitudinal axis and the drive means comprise a gear train comprising a drive pinion integral in rotation with a first end of a threaded rod, another drive pinion integral in rotation with a second end of a threaded rod, another drive pinion integral in rotation with a third end of a threaded rod, and a third drive pinion integral in rotation with a fourth end of a threaded rod. rotation of a first end of the other threaded rod, an intermediate pinion and an output pinion in direct engagement with an output shaft of an electric motor. A central space between the threaded rods is free to accommodate said mast.

[0015] The movement system advantageously comprises two diametrically opposed guide rails, the carriage cooperating with the two guide rails and the carriage has the shape of a cross, the end of each opposite branch moving in a guide rail. The other two opposite branches are advantageously intended for fixing the mast.

[0016] Preferably, the at least one guide rail comprises at its longitudinal ends straight portions parallel to the longitudinal axis connected by the helix portion.

[0017] Very advantageously, at least the straight portion intended to be in the low position is made of a material having significant rigidity, such as stainless steel or titanium.

[0018] In an exemplary embodiment, the lower base comprises a central part free to rotate about the longitudinal axis in which second ends of the threaded rods are fixed, and the first ends carrying the drive pinions are guided in rotation about the longitudinal axis so that, when the carriage moves along the longitudinal axis, the threaded rods rotate about the longitudinal axis.

[0019] The system may comprise a casing covering the upper base and shaped to guide in rotation at least the drive pinions around the longitudinal axis.

[0020] Very advantageously, the worm screw system is irreversible.

[0021] The present invention also relates to a hydrofoil comprising a hull, propulsion means, at least one first hydrofoil, at least one first underwater mast, a first end of which is fixed to the first hydrofoil, said first underwater mast passing through said hull, and at least one first movement system according to the invention in line with the first underwater mast, the second end of the first underwater mast being fixed to the carriage of the first drive means.

[0022] In an exemplary embodiment, the first hydrofoil is arranged at the bow of the hydrofoil and the hydrofoil comprises a second hydrofoil arranged at the stern of the hydrofoil, at least one second underwater mast, a first end of which is fixed to the second hydrofoil, said second underwater mast passing through said hull at the stern, and at least one second displacement system according to the invention at right angles to the second underwater mast. Furthermore, the area between the first displacement system and the second displacement system is configured for the transport of goods. Brief description of the drawings

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS

[0024] In the present application, the terms “boat” and “hydrofoil” are used interchangeably.

[0025] In [Fig.l], a schematic representation of an example of a hydrofoil H to which the present invention applies can be seen. The hydrofoil H is more particularly suitable for the transport of people.

[0026] In Figures 1 and 2, one can see in detail the hydrofoil H comprising a hull 2, a cockpit 4, seats 6 for the passengers, a hydrofoil 8 fixed to the end of an underwater mast 9, a rudder 10 and propulsion means 12, 14. As a variant, the boat H can comprise one or more propulsion means.

[0027] W denotes the surface of the water.

[0028] The hull extends along a longitudinal axis X.

[0029] In the example shown, the propulsion means 12, 14 comprise an electric motor and propellers or turbines. In this example, propulsion means 12 are provided at the hydrofoil and propulsion means 14 are provided at the rudder.

[0030] The propulsion means are advantageously mounted articulated in rotation on the masts around the vertical direction, so as to maintain an orientation aligned with the longitudinal direction whatever the orientation of the hydrofoils, so as to be able to ensure propulsion at low speed. In addition, this vertical articulation of the propulsion means also makes it possible to ensure the orientation of the boat.

[0031] The location of the propulsion means is in no way limiting.

[0032] The mast 9 and the hydrofoil 8 are fixed in movement relative to each other. Advantageously, the mast and the hydrofoil are made in one piece.

[0033] The hydrofoil mounted at the end of the underwater mast is retractable and pivotable so that the hydrofoil can take two extreme vertical positions, a first position in which the hydrofoil is spaced from the hull 2 and is oriented orthogonally to the X axis and a second position in which the foil is close to the hull 2 and is aligned with the X axis. In its second position, the hydrofoil is retracted into its high position.

[0034] The first position corresponds to a high speed movement when the boat is "flying" on the water and the second position corresponds to a low speed movement when the boat is floating on the water.

[0035] Lifting and pivoting the hydrofoil reduces drag at low speeds and reduces the boat's bulk, making it easier to move in shallow water and park, for example, in marinas.

[0036] Advantageously, the rudder 10 can also be retracted vertically to take a position close to the hull.

[0037] When the hydrofoil is raised, it pivots around the axis of the underwater mast to align with the longitudinal direction of the hull.

[0038] Preferably, the bottom of the hull comprises a recess allowing the hydrofoil to be housed when it is in its second position.

[0039] The underwater mast is mounted through the hull 2. In the retracted position it is partly located above the hull, or even above the deck in the example shown.

[0040] The hydrofoil also includes a displacement system S ensuring the lifting and rotation of the hydrofoil arranged in line with the mast, an example of which is shown in detail in Figures 3A to 5B.

[0041] The underwater mast 9 comprises a first longitudinal end 9.1 to which the hydrofoil 8 is fixed, and a second longitudinal end 9.2 intended to cooperate with the S lifting and rotating system.

[0042] The system S, hereinafter designated the lifting system, extends along a longitudinal axis Z oriented substantially vertically and aligned with the longitudinal axis of the mast.

[0043] The lifting system S comprises a housing 16 of cylindrical shape of revolution, two guide rails 18 fixed to the inner wall of the housing 16 and arranged diametrically opposite each other, a carriage 20 fixed to the second end of the foil and guided by the rails and means D for moving the carriage. The guide rails are for example fixed by screwing to the housing 16.

[0044] In this example and advantageously, the displacement means comprise two threaded rods 22 extending parallel to the Z axis and arranged in relation to each other in a diametrically opposite manner.

[0045] The system comprises a lower base 24 and an upper base 26.

[0046] The lower base comprises a central part 24.1 which can rotate about the X axis and a fixed outer part 24.2. A passage 25 passes through the central part 24.1 along the Z axis, the shape of which allows the mast 9 to pass through. A clearance is provided to ensure the mast 9 slides with reduced clearance. A bearing is provided between the central part 24.1 and the outer part 24.2. As will be described later, the lower base is mounted to rotate freely about the Z axis.

[0047] The threaded rods extend between the central portion 24.1 of the lower base and the upper base.

[0048] The carriage 20 is mounted to move along the threaded rods 22. In the example shown, the carriage is cross-shaped, two of its aligned branches 20.1, 20.2 of which are provided with a bore each crossed by a threaded rod 22. Threads are provided in the bores and each cooperate with a threaded rod 22, forming a worm screw system.

[0049] The other two branches allow the mast 9 to be fixed to the carriage 20. The cross shape allows the mast to be oriented so that it slides between the threaded rods while being very compact. In addition, when the mast is in the high position, the motor is advantageously housed between two branches of the carriage as can be seen in [Fig.3E]. The system then has a reduced height.

[0050] A trolley having another shape does not depart from the scope of the present invention.

[0051] The displacement means D also comprise means for driving the threaded rods 22 in rotation. The drive means are positioned at the level of the upper base 26 and comprise an actuator 30, preferably comprising an electric motor and an output pinion 31 in direct engagement with its output shaft.

[0052] The electric motor extends parallel to the Z axis.

[0053] Furthermore, the drive means, more particularly visible in [Fig.3F], comprise a gear train comprising a drive pinion 32 fixed to a upper end of each of the threaded rods 22 and an intermediate pinion 34 meshing with the output pinion 31 of the actuator and meshing with the drive pinions of the threaded rods. The intermediate pinion 34 is coaxial with the Z axis. The upper base 26 also comprises a fixed outer part in the form of a crown 26.1 secured to the housing, and a central part 26.2 which is mobile in rotation around the Z axis and with which the pinions are secured. A cover (not shown) closes the upper end of the housing. The inner face of the cover 27 is shaped to guide the pinions in rotation around the Z axis.

[0054] The drive system may comprise a single threaded rod coaxial with the Z axis or more than two rods, for example three, distributed around the Z axis. The shape of the carriage is then adapted to the number of threaded rods. In the case of three threaded rods, the carriage has, for example, the shape of a three-pointed cross and the system comprises, for example, three guide rails.

[0055] Furthermore, a system comprising a single guide rail does not depart from the scope of the present invention.

[0056] The implementation of at least two threaded rods allows the central space of the system to be left free for the movement of the mast. No passage through the mast for the threaded rods is then required, simplifying the production of the mast and allowing the production of a thin mast which has reduced drag. The implementation of a single Z-axis threaded rod falls within the scope of the present application; however, in this case a Z-axis passage is provided in the mast for the threaded rod, resulting in a thicker mast and increased drag.

[0057] The two guide rails have similar shapes.

[0058] The carriage cooperates with the guide rails, for example by means of pins (not visible) projecting radially from the free ends of the branches 20.1, 20.2. It may be provided, in particular depending on the material of the rails and the carriages, to equip the pins with rolling rollers to reduce the friction between the carriage and the rails.

[0059] In this example and very advantageously, each guide rail comprises a lower straight portion 18.1 parallel to the Z axis, an upper straight portion 18.2 parallel to the Z axis and an intermediate portion 18.3 in the form of a portion of a circular helix of axis Z.

[0060] In this example, the rotation angle between the inlet and the outlet of the propeller portion is 90° because it is desired to obtain such a rotation when lifting the hydrofoil. As will be mentioned later, such a rotation angle is not limiting.

[0061] The implementation of straight portions at the ends of the guide rails makes it possible to limit the risks of vertical movement of the hydrofoil under the action of rotational forces applied by the water to the hydrofoil.

[0062] Indeed, the hydrofoil can be subjected to asymmetrical forces applied by the water, for example when manipulating the control flaps. These asymmetrical forces exert a rotational force on the hydrofoil around the Z axis. However, the lower straight portions 18.1 prevent or at least limit the conversion of this rotation into a movement, in particular upwards, of the hydrofoil.

[0063] The upper straight portions 18.2 have the same advantage and reduce the risks of unwanted lowering of the hydrofoil.

[0064] Also advantageously, in addition to or instead of the straight portions, the threaded rods and nuts form irreversible systems limiting, or even preventing, unwanted movement of the hydrofoil.

[0065] Alternatively or additionally, means for locking the position of the hydrofoil may be provided. For example, it is an electrically actuated pin which cooperates either with the lower base or with the upper base and locks the hydrofoil either in the retracted position or in the deployed position.

[0066] A movement system in which the guide rails comprise only a helix portion or a helix portion and only one straight portion does not depart from the scope of the present invention.

[0067] In an exemplary embodiment, the guide rails are made of a single piece, for example made of stainless steel or titanium.

[0068] In a particularly advantageous embodiment, the rails comprise several materials.

[0069] For example, the lower end portion of each rail is made of a material that is sufficiently rigid to withstand the rotational force applied to the mast resulting from the asymmetric forces applied to the hydrofoil. For example, the lower end portion is made of stainless steel or titanium.

[0070] The other part of each rail may be made of a less rigid material, for example a plastic material, preferably a self-lubricating plastic material, such as acetal, for example acetal-H or acetal-C, and polyurethane, or UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene in English terminology), also known as high modulus polyethylene. Alternatively, it may be made of a composite material, such as ORKOT®-TLM or 0RK0T®-TXM. The use of several materials adapted to the variable mechanical constraints along the rails makes it possible to reduce the mass of the assembly. In addition, the use of materials with a low coefficient of friction allows the mechanical simplification of the system and therefore reduces maintenance.

[0071] The lower right part advantageously has an elastic limit Re at least equal to 400 MPa, preferably greater than 500 MPa. The other parts of the guide rails may have an elastic limit Re less than 20 MPa and advantageously a coefficient of friction less than 0.2.

[0072] In the example shown and advantageously, the system comprises a low bearing 36 at the hull, the intermediate bearing in the lower base 24 and a high bearing in the upper base 26. The cylindrical housing 16 extends from the low bearing 36 to the high bearing. The low bearing 36 and the intermediate bearing are crossed by the mast. The low bearing and the intermediate bearing provide a fitting allowing the forces to be supported in the event of a collision or any other load case. It is possible to provide only a single bearing capable of not taking up the loads, however the mass of the system will be increased.

[0073] Seals, for example lip seals, are preferably provided between the mast and the lower bearing and between the mast and the intermediate bearing. It should be noted that the system is always arranged above the water, since it rests above the hull.

[0074] An example of operation of the movement system will now be described.

[0075] At low speed, the hydrofoil 8 is in its second position, i.e. it is close to the hull and aligned with the X axis. This position is shown in Figures 3A to 3D.

[0076] When the speed is sufficient, an instruction is given to deploy the hydrofoil 8 to switch to “flight” mode. For this, the electric mode is activated in a direction of lowering the hydrofoil, the output pinion 31 is rotated, driving the intermediate pinion 34 which in turn drives the two drive pinions 32. The threaded rods 22 then rotate on themselves. The nuts locked in rotation cause the downward movement of the carriage 20, the movement of which around the Z axis is constrained by the cooperation of the pins and the guide rails 18. In a first phase, the movement of the carriage 20, the mast 9 and the hydrofoil 8 is imposed by the upper right portion 18.2, they move only in translation. In a second phase, the carriage reaches the intermediate portion 18.3 in helix, the carriage, the mast and the hydrofoil move simultaneously in translation and in rotation (figures 5A and 5B).When the carriage 20 has traveled the entire intermediate portion 18.3, the hydrofoil pivots 90°. In a third phase, the carriage moves in the lower right portion 18.1, the carriage 20, the mast 9 and the hydrofoil 8 move in translation only. When the carriage 20 reaches the lower ends of the rails 18, the hydrofoil 8 is in its extreme low position (figures 4A and 4B).

[0077] When moving in the intermediate portion, the moving means, more particularly the threaded rods 22 and the drive means pivot around the Z axis, in particular the upper end of the rods and the pinions rotate around the Z axis due to the central part 26.2 of the upper base ([Fig.3E]), and the lower end of the rods 22 pivot thanks to the central part 24.1 of the lower base 24. Thus the threaded rods 22 do not undergo any twisting during the movement of the carriage.

[0078] The operation of raising the mast 9 is carried out by actuating the motor in the opposite direction of rotation to cause the carriage 20 to move upwards.

[0079] The housing 16 houses the underwater mast 9 in the raised position, avoiding any risk of accident with people on deck. In addition, the assembly forms a compact unit protected from the external environment.

[0080] In the example shown, the hydrofoil pivots through an angle of 90° between the two extreme high and low positions; it will be understood that a movement system allowing movement through an angle of less than 90° does not go beyond the scope of the present application. For this, the shape of the propeller portion is adapted.

[0081] In [Fig.6], another example of a hydrofoil H' to which the present invention applies can be seen. The hydrofoil H' comprises a hull 2', a pilothouse 4', two retractable and pivoting hydrofoils 8' fixed to the end of underwater masts 9', one arranged at the bow of the boat and the other arranged at the stern of the boat. Propulsion means 12', 14' are provided at the hydrofoils 8'. The boat also comprises two displacement systems S' associated with each hydrofoil. The area 38 between the two displacement systems S' is advantageously configured to receive one or more containers C for transporting goods.

[0082] The movement system according to the invention applies to any hydrofoil using a vertically and rotating movable hydrofoil. The hydrofoil may be of the follower type, i.e. it is part of a convoy and follows a pilot hydrofoil with which it is in communication.

[0083] The present invention therefore provides a system for moving a hydrofoil in rotation and translation that is efficient, robust and compact.
