Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Device for evaluating a heat transfer field
[0001] The present invention relates to the field of thermal science and more particularly to the evaluation of a heat transfer field representative of the distribution of heat transfer coefficients on a surface of a solid onto which a fluid is projected. The invention has, for example, an application in the field of machining and in particular for the cooling of parts and tools during machining but has multiple applications, in particular in any system implementing cooling by fluid jet.
[0002] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] It is known to cool and lubricate parts and tools during machining, in particular to optimize the machining speed, obtain the desired machining precision and surface finish, preserve the tools, etc.
[0004] The most commonly used cooling / lubrication method currently consists of spraying a jet of coolant / lubrication liquid onto the workpiece and the tool for the entire duration of the machining. The coolant / lubrication liquid used is often oil- or water-based and the consumption of coolant / lubrication liquid is high, the workpiece and the tool splashing in the coolant / lubrication liquid which spreads widely around the machining area. Since the coolant / lubrication liquid is toxic, at least from an environmental point of view, it is necessary to recover and treat the used coolant / lubrication liquid, which complicates the machining process and increases its cost.
[0005] To overcome these drawbacks, it has been envisaged to determine in advance the heat to be dissipated during machining and the quantity of coolant / lubrication liquid to be supplied to maintain heating of the part and the tool at acceptable levels by limiting the consumption of coolant / lubrication liquid to just what is necessary. This is achieved from the machining parameters (speed, depth of cut and materials).
[0006] It has also been considered to use other cooling modes using less polluting cooling / lubricating fluid compositions.
[0007] Among these, we can note: - cryogenic cooling by projection of liquid nitrogen (LN2) or liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2); - cooling by projection of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2).
[0008] However, whatever the cooling fluid used, it is necessary, to optimize the cooling during machining, to determine the efficiency of the cooling as a function of the flow rate of the cooling fluid, the projection angle, its temperature, etc. In particular, it is known that the temperature of the part in the zone struck by the jet of cooling fluid is not the same depending on whether one is in the center of this zone or on the periphery thereof.
[0009] SUBJECT OF THE INVENTION
[0010] The invention aims in particular to enable the evaluation of a heat transfer field on the surface of a material struck by a jet of fluid. Summary of the invention
[0011] For this purpose, according to the invention, there is provided a device for evaluating a heat transfer field, comprising a frame, a thermoregulation member, a part which is provided with a target in the vicinity of a first main surface of the part and which is mounted on the frame to be movable along a first direction between a first position in which the target is subjected to the effect of the thermoregulation member and a second position in which the target escapes the effect of the thermoregulation member, a nozzle mounted opposite the first main surface of the part to project a jet of fluid towards the target when the part is in its first position, and a device for measuring at least one temperature of the target when the part is in its first position.
[0012] The thermoregulation member is arranged to impose a temperature on the target. The thermoregulation member resets the temperature of the target between two measurements. With the device of the invention, it is possible, cyclically: - to project the jet towards the part between which we wish to know the thermal exchange field, - to bring the part into the second position to subject the target to the effect of the thermoregulation member and thus initialize the temperature of the target, - to bring the part into the first position and carry out a first temperature measurement, - to bring the part into the second position to subject the target to the effect of the thermoregulation member and reset the temperature of the target, - to return the part to the first position and carry out a second temperature measurement.
[0013] The invention thus makes it possible to measure the effects on the heat exchange fields of the properties of the jet (for example its nature, its temperature, its speed, its angle of impact, its distance, etc.) and of the impacted surface (for example its temperature, its roughness, its nature, its shape, its speed, etc.).
[0014] Preferably, the nozzle and the part are mounted to be movable relative to each other along a second direction to change a position of a point of impact of the jet relative to the target.
[0015] It is understood that, the nozzle having been offset between the two temperature measurements, the first temperature measurement is carried out at a first point separated from the center of the jet by a first distance and the second temperature measurement is carried out at a second point separated from the center of the jet by a second distance different from the first distance even though the temperature of the target before being hit by the jet is identical for the two measurements due to the temperature initialization by the thermoregulation member. By repeating the temperature measurements after resetting the temperature of the target and offsetting the nozzle, temperature measurements are available at several distances from the center of the jet. With this scanning, it is possible to deduce a heat transfer field between the jet and the target over the entire interaction surface. The movement of the jet combined with the movement of the part thus makes it possible to study the surface distribution of the transfer coefficients without it being necessary to measure the temperatures over the entire rotor.
[0016] According to optional characteristics, used individually or in whole or in part in combination: - the part is a rotor which has an axis of rotation and which is partly permanently subjected to the effect of the thermoregulation member, the first direction being circumferential around said axis of rotation; - the device comprises a motor for driving the rotor in rotation in the first direction; - the device also includes a nozzle movement motor, and an electronic control unit connected to the two motors to control them in a synchronized manner; - the device comprises at least one temperature probe fixed in the target at a predetermined distance from the first main surface and preferably several temperature probes fixed in the target at different predetermined distances from the first main surface, - the temperature probes are advantageously aligned in the first direction and possibly the temperature probes are also positioned in at least one second direction; - each temperature probe comprises a thermocouple comprising a first metal and the target is a wafer of a second metal of the thermocouple; - the device comprises at least one thermal camera arranged opposite the part, preferably opposite a second main surface of the room opposite the first main surface; - the thermoregulation organ is a thermoregulated bath in which the target dips when the part is in the second position; - the temperature-controlled bath comprises water and ethylene glycol, or the temperature-controlled bath comprises a low-melting point metal in liquid form; - the thermoregulation member comprises a nozzle for projecting a jet of fluid; - the thermoregulation device comprises a fluidized sand bed; - the device comprises a squeegee applied to the first main surface; - the device comprises a member for adjusting the distance between the nozzle and the first main surface; - the device comprises a member for adjusting the inclination between the nozzle and the first main surface.

[0026] With reference to Figures 1 to 4, the device according to the first embodiment of the invention comprises a horizontal frame 1 and a tank 2 fixed under the frame 1 opposite an elongated opening 3 made in the frame 1. The tank 2 is surrounded by a temperature control device 4 intended to regulate the temperature of the liquid contained in the tank 2 to form a thermoregulated bath. To this end, the temperature control device 4 comprises an electronic control unit controlling a heat exchanger according to the signals coming from a temperature probe immersed in the liquid contained in the tank 2. A stirring member is installed in the tank 2 to stir the liquid of the thermoregulated bath and to standardize the temperature of the thermoregulated bath throughout the tank 2. The thermoregulated bath here comprises, for example, a mixture of water and ethylene glycol or a metal with a low melting point in the liquid state. The metal in question may be an alloy of lead, tin and antimony. In this second case, it is understood that the set temperature of the thermoregulated bath must be kept higher than the melting temperature of the metal. The temperature of the thermoregulated bath is between -30°C and several hundred degrees, for example 500°C, depending on the liquid used for the thermoregulated bath. The choice of the reset temperature is one of the parameters studied affecting the heat exchange to be measured.
[0027] A rotor 5, having a portion passing through the opening 3 for dipping into the thermoregulated bath, is fixed to a first end of a drive shaft 6 which is mounted on the frame 1 to pivot about a horizontal axis and which has a second end rotatably connected to an output shaft of a motor 7 fixed under the frame 1. An angular encoder 8 is mounted on the frame 1 to determine the angular position of the drive shaft 6 about its axis of rotation. The rotor 5 has a first main face 5.1 oriented away from the drive shaft 6 and a second main face 5.2 oriented towards the drive shaft 6. These two faces are substantially vertical and a scraper 17 is fixed to the edge of the opening 3 to rub the first main face 5.1, thus ridding it of any liquid residue. The rotor 5 is here made in the form of an aluminum disc and has, for example, a thickness of 4 mm.
[0028] Opposite the first main face 5.1 of the rotor 5 extends vertically a chassis 9 mounted on the frame 1 by a base 10 adjustable in position parallel to the axis of rotation of the rotor 5 to allow the chassis 9 to be moved closer to or further away from the rotor 5. A carriage 11 is mounted on the chassis 9 to be movable vertically and is carried by a nut engaged on a worm screw mounted to pivot about a vertical axis and driven in rotation by a motor 12 fixed to the top of the chassis 9. An angular encoder 18 is mounted on the chassis 9 to detect the angular position of the output shaft of the motor 12, and to know the position of the carriage 11.
[0029] The carriage 11 carries a nozzle 13 which has an axis extending in a vertical plane containing the axis of rotation of the rotor 5 and which is adjustable in inclination in a plane vertical relative to the carriage 11. The nozzle 13 is here secured to a plate 14 which is rotatably mounted on the carriage 11 around a horizontal axis perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the rotor 5 and which is fixed in position by tightening a screw. The nozzle 13 is connected via a valve 15 to a circuit 16 for transporting a pressurized fluid and makes it possible to project this jet onto the first main face 5.1 of the rotor 5. The mobility in height of the carriage 11 and therefore of the nozzle 13 relative to the frame 1 makes it possible to sweep with the jet the height of the zone of the first main face 5.1 of the rotor 5. The adjustment in inclination of the nozzle 13 relative to the carriage 11 makes it possible to adjust and study the effect of the inclination of the jet relative to the first main face 5.1 of the rotor 5. A variant of the device giving identical results can be produced by fixing the nozzle 13 in the second direction (vertical here) and by moving the target 19 in the radial direction of the rotor 5.
[0030] The temperature of the projected fluid depends on the applications and is for example between negative temperatures such as -196°C up to positive temperatures of a few hundred degrees Celsius. The projected fluid can be carbon dioxide in the supercritical state, liquid nitrogen, compressed air or any other pure fluid or cooling or heating mixture for which one would like to know the heat transfer coefficient field with a solid.
[0031] A target 19 is fixed to the rotor 5: the target 19 has the shape of a plate having a first main face 19.1 flush with the first main face 5.1 of the rotor 5. The plate forming the target 19 is here made of iron and has for example a thickness equal to 1 mm. An electrical insulator is interposed between the target 19 and the rotor 5. The target 19 has a center placed at a distance R from the axis of rotation of the rotor 5 and is provided for example with five thermocouples 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e which form temperature probes and which are fixed on the side of a second main face 19.2 of the target 19, opposite the first main face 19.1, along a circle of radius R. More precisely, the thermocouples 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e are each fixed in a bore 21b, 21c, 21d, 21e made in the target 19 from the second main face 19.2.The bore 21b has a depth greater than a depth of the bore 21c which is itself greater than a depth of the bore 21d which is itself greater than a depth of the bore 21e. The bore 20a is through and allows the hot weld made with the target to emerge on the surface, giving access to the temperature of the jet close to the surface. The thermocouples 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e are of the single-wire J type and are connected to an electronic processing unit 22 via a rotating collector 23 mounted on the drive shaft 6 of the rotor 5. More precisely, the J+ part (made of iron) is common to all the thermocouples 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e and is fixed on the second main face 19.2 of the target 19 using the wire 20f. The J- parts (copper-nickel) of thermocouples 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e are fixed to the bottom. of the holes 21b, 21c, 21d, 21e. In addition to the electrical point connection at the bottom of the holes and the connection on the rotating connector, the thermocouple wires are electrically insulated from the device and they are also insulated from the walls of the holes 21a, 21b, 21c, 21d, 21e. The disturbance of the thermal field is reduced by limiting the diameter of the holes, for example, to a tenth of a millimeter. Using the same material for the plate of the target 19 and the J+ part of the thermocouples allows for a low reaction time for the temperature measurement. The temperature measurement time constants are limited only by the voltage measuring means, reaching, for example, here one million points per second and per channel.
[0032] The electronic processing unit 22 measures the temperatures of the thermocouples and is also connected to the angular encoders 8, 18 to receive data from them and to the axis cards of the motors 7, 12, to the valve 15 and to the temperature control device 4 to control them. The electronic processing unit 22 comprises at least one processor and a memory containing a computer program executable by the processor and is here a computer coupled to a measuring device (of voltages and encoder signals) and a programmable controller.
[0033] The measurement process implemented by the computer program consists of: - controlling the motor 7 to rotate the rotor in a predetermined direction of rotation so as to bring the target 19 successively into the thermoregulated bath then in front of the nozzle 13 then again into the thermoregulated bath then again in front of the nozzle 13 and so on, - control the valve 15 to project the jet towards the first main face 5.1 of the rotor 5 throughout the rotation of the rotor 5, - continuously acquire a temperature measurement on each thermocouple 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e or periodically when the target 19 is outside the thermoregulated bath and presented in front of the jet, - acquire the position of each thermocouple 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e in their rotational movement on the disc 5 as well as the position of the jet 13 synchronously with the temperature measurement, - controlling the motor 12 to shift the nozzle 13 in height at least while the target 19 is in the thermoregulated bath so as to adjust a position of a point of impact of the jet relative to the target 19 at each revolution.
[0034] The electronic control unit 22 is therefore arranged to control the first motor 7 and the second motor 12 in a synchronized manner.
[0035] The target therefore moves in a circumferential direction of the rotor 5. The rotation speed 0 of the rotor 5 is for example 0.5 revolutions per second and the linear speed of movement of the thermocouples in front of the nozzle 13 is V = RQ. The direction of rotation S is that which allows the thermocouples to arrive opposite the nozzle 13 in the order following 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e. It is therefore understood that the thermocouple 20b, which is closest to the first main face 5.1, carries out the first temperature measurement and will quickly be saturated. This is not a problem since the thermocouple 20c, which is a little further from the first main face 5.1, will be able to take over and provide a second temperature measurement, and so on with the thermocouples 20d, and 20e in this order as they pass in front of the nozzle 13. The spacing in the second direction of the thermocouples 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e is determined to be sufficiently large so that the thermocouples 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e do not disturb each other. The depth of the holes 21a, 21b, 21c, 21d, 21e is a function of their speed of movement in front of the nozzle 13 and of the thermal diffusivity of the material constituting the target 19: this makes it possible to avoid saturation of the temperature measurement in order to see further in time and space. It will be noted that at each thermocouple depth there is a time constant close to the ratio between the square of the distance separating the thermocouple from the first face 5.1 and the diffusivity of the material. It is understood that the temperatures ta, tb, tc, td, te provided by the thermocouples 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e are offset in time due to the fact that the thermocouples are angularly offset from each other and from their time constant (see the series of curves at the top in [Fig.5]).Knowing the rotation speed of rotor 5 and the spacing between thermocouples 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e, it is easy to recalibrate the evolution of temperatures ta, tb, tc, td, f, measured by thermocouples 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d, 20e on the same time origin (see the series of curves at the bottom in [Fig.5]).
[0036] The temperature measurements over time are then processed by the electronic processing unit 22 via an inverse method algorithm to evaluate the heat flows and, above all, the surface distribution of the exchange coefficient between the rotor and the fluid studied.
[0037] It is understood that, at each instant, a zone 5' of the rotor 5 is outside the thermo-regulated bath and is not subject to the influence of the jet, a zone 5” of the rotor 5 is outside the thermo-regulated bath and is or has been subject to the influence of the jet because it encompasses the zone 5”” of impact of the jet with the rotor 5, a zone 5'” of the rotor 5 is in the thermo-regulated bath. The temperature measurements are provided throughout the rotation of the rotor 5, regardless of the zone in which the target 19 is located. Preferably, the temperature measurements while the target 19 is immersed in the thermo-regulated bath are discarded (the electronic unit knows the angular position of the rotor 5 and therefore of the target 19 thanks to the angular encoder 8). Alternatively, temperature measurements while the target 19 is immersed in the temperature-controlled bath may be used to ensure the temperature of the temperature-controlled bath or the effectiveness of the homogeneous cooling of the rotor 5.Alternatively, the acquisition of measurements. temperature can be interrupted while the target 19 is immersed in the temperature-controlled bath. Alternatively, the rotational speed of the disc can be reduced while the 5” sector is in the thermal reset fluid.
[0038] The thermoregulated bath ensures a thermal reset of the rotor 5 and the target 19 between each series of temperature measurements: this results in a continuous erasure of the thermal history of the rotor 5 and the target 19. This makes it possible to stabilize the exchanges and to no longer have to manage the transient exchanges during the establishment of the jet or at each shift thereof. This device makes it possible to achieve a continuous transient regime by resetting the thermal history of the target 19 at each revolution. Alternatively, the first face 5.1 of the rotor 5 can be thermally insulated and only the thermal interaction with the target 19 can remain.
[0039] In a second embodiment of the invention shown in [Fig. 6], the thermocouples forming a temperature measuring device are replaced by a thermal camera 30 which is pointed at the zone 5” of the second face 5.2 of the rotor 5 extending above the thermoregulated bath and which encompasses the zone 5”” of impact of the jet. The zone 5” here extends over approximately a quarter of the rotor 5 (see [Fig. 7]) and constitutes the target zone targeted by the thermal camera 30. In this embodiment, it is understood that, due to the rotation of the rotor 5, the camera acquires the information on an annular surface of the rotor 5 so that the rotor 5 carries in a way a multitude of targets covering said annular surface whose passages in front of the thermal camera 30 and in the thermoregulated bath are linked at a speed directly linked to the speed of rotation of the rotor 5.It will be noted that the benefit of adjusting the height of the nozzle 13 depends on the extent of the field of the thermal camera 30 and is all the greater the smaller the field of the thermal camera. In the extreme, the height adjustment of the nozzle 13 is useless if the camera has a field such that the 5” zone extends over the entire radius of the rotor 5.
[0040] As the thermal camera 30 performs a measurement on the second main face 5.2 to determine the exchanges at the first face 5.1, there is a delay time which causes the conductivities to convolve in the thickness of the rotor 5 and laterally on the first face 5.1. The processing unit 22 must therefore implement a deconvolution algorithm, known per se, to allow the measurements to be used to determine the heat exchange field on the face 5.1. Alternatively, the camera could be pointed at the face 5.1 if the projected fluid does not disturb its operation: this makes it possible to simplify the processing of the measurements.
[0041] Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiments described but encompasses any variant falling within the scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
[0042] In particular, the device may have a structure other than that described.
[0043] The invention can be implemented using any target that can be moved along a first direction between a first position in which the target is outside the bath and a second position in which the target is in the bath. The part carrying the target can thus move in rectilinear directions forming, for example, a square trajectory. The part is not necessarily a rotor or even a plate: it can be a part of any shape such as a torus, a spherical cap, a square plate, etc. The part and the target are not limited to planar shapes and can, for example, be in any form of revolution around the axis of rotation or not. As an example, it is possible to use a target 19 in the form of a torus segment to evaluate the heat exchange fields between a jet and a cylindrical shape. The rotor and / or the target may be made of flexible elements allowing them to move alternately from the thermal reset zone to the measurement zone. The surface properties such as the roughness of the target may be modified to assess their impact on thermal exchanges. All these possible variants justify the target being a modular and easily replaceable element of the disc 5. .
[0044] The device can be more or less motorized / automated.
[0045] The electronic control unit is preferably connected to other sensors to automatically correlate the information provided by these sensors with the temperature measurements provided by the thermocouples, but this is not mandatory. The electronic acquisition unit is for example connected to the following sensors: - a nozzle height sensor, here an angular encoder, - a nozzle tilt sensor, - a flow rate and / or jet speed sensor, - a rotor position and rotation speed sensor, here an encoder angular, - a distance sensor between the nozzle and the rotor...
[0046] The base 10 can be motorized to adjust the spacing of the nozzle 13 relative to the first main face of the rotor 5. The plate 14 can also be motorized.
[0047] The carriage can be moved vertically step by step, at each turn or be animated by a continuous movement.
[0048] The squeegee is optional, its usefulness depending on the wettability of the disc in the face of the surface tension of the liquid in the thermoregulated bath.
[0049] The materials and thicknesses of the target and rotor may be different from those indicated.
[0050] The invention can be used to test any cooling or heating fluid, gaseous, liquid or even loaded with solid particles. A scraper seal can be provided extending along the opening 3 and bearing against the main face 5.1 for prevent coolant from nozzle 13 from mixing with the liquid in the thermoregulated bath.
[0051] The thermoregulation member may be any member capable of imposing a temperature on the part of the part undergoing the effect of the thermoregulation member. For example, a jet of fluid, a bed of fluidized sand, a solid applied against the part, but also simply the ambient air, may be used. In these last two cases more particularly, the thermoregulation member comprises, on the one hand, the means allowing the part to be brought into contact with the solid or the ambient air (arrangement so that the target comes into contact with the solid and the ambient air when it leaves the cooling jet) and the means for adjusting the duration of this contact (speed of rotation / displacement of the part).
[0052] Any temperature measuring device can be used instead of thermocouples and for example thermistors.
