AI Technical Summary
Existing aircraft seat structures are complex, bulky, and prone to mechanical failures during transitions between straightened and inclined positions, which compromises safety and comfort during taxi, takeoff, and landing phases.
The aircraft seat structure features a rear point of articulation located at the rear of the axis of articulation on the main travel cart, allowing for a significant inclination between the nominal and inclined positions while minimizing bulkiness and complexity.
This configuration enables a robust and reliable seat structure that maintains passenger safety and comfort by achieving a significant inclination with fewer parts and less bulk, reducing the likelihood of mechanical failures during movement.

Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Reclining aircraft seat structure, and associated aircraft cabin
[0001] The present invention relates to an aircraft seat structure, comprising:
[0002] - a base intended to be mounted on a floor of an aircraft cabin;
[0003] - a main moving carriage, carried by the base, the moving carriage main comprising, in projection in a vertical median plane of the seat structure, a front edge and a rear edge;
[0004] - a seat support, articulated on the main moving carriage around an axis transverse articulation front, located between the front edge and the rear edge of the main moving carriage, projecting in the median vertical plane;
[0005] - a backrest support, articulated relative to the seat support, around an axis transverse articulation rear, located at the rear of the front articulation axis, the backrest support comprising at least one lower arm projecting under the seat support;
[0006] - an actuator comprising a body and a member deployable relative to the body between a retracted position in the body and a deployed position relative to the body, one of the body and the deployable member being articulated on the lower arm at a rear point of articulation, the other of the body and the deployable member being articulated on the main movement carriage at a front point of articulation.
[0007] An aircraft seat provided with such a structure is intended to be placed in an aircraft cabin, in particular a cabin of a business jet, to provide comfortable seating for a passenger of the aircraft.
[0008] Passenger safety and comfort are essential elements in business aviation. In this regard, it is known to provide passengers of such aircraft with a seat that has a robust structure, particularly during the taxiing, takeoff and landing phases ("Taxi, Takeoff and Landing" or TTOL).
[0009] The aircraft seat is also capable of tilting substantially, in particular to a so-called "Zero G" position, in which the passenger seated in the seat can rest, or even sleep, with very comfortable support that is well distributed along the body.
[0010] In addition to being reclining, the seat is generally capable of being pivoted around a vertical axis, in order to allow the passenger to work or chat with other passengers while facing in an appropriate direction.
[0011] Seat structures, which ensure the robustness of the seat, while ensuring these varied movements, are generally very complex.
[0012] A known seat structure of the aforementioned type is inclined using a mechanism within the structure which notably comprises an actuator acting on a connecting rod connected to the seat support. The front end of the connecting rod is received in a slide which is permanently located in front of the articulation axis of the seat support on the carriage.
[0013] This seat structure allows for a significant inclination providing a comfortable reclined position for the passenger.
[0014] However, such a seat structure is not entirely satisfactory. Due to the relative arrangement between the elements of the seat structure, numerous connecting rods and reminders must be used to operate the mechanism between the upright position and the inclined position. The seat structure is therefore relatively bulky, and has a higher probability of seizing up when it is maneuvered between the upright position and the inclined position.
[0015] An object of the invention is therefore to provide an aircraft seat structure which produces a very significant inclination between the nominal position and the inclined position, while being less bulky and simpler in its structure and maintenance.
[0016] To this end, the invention relates to a seat structure of the aforementioned type, characterized in that the rear articulation point is located at the rear of the front articulation axis over at least part of the travel of the movable member between the retracted position and the deployed position.
[0017] The seat structure according to the invention may comprise one or more of the following characteristics, taken in isolation or in any technically possible combination:
[0018] - the rear articulation point is located at the rear of the front articulation axis on the entire travel of the moving member between the retracted position and the deployed position;
[0019] - one of the lower arm and the main moving carriage delimits a slide, the other of the lower arm and the main moving carriage carries a slide received in the slide;
[0020] - the slide is located, in projection in the median vertical plane, at the same point that the rear point of articulation;
[0021] - the slide extends entirely to the rear of the front articulation axis;
[0022] - the front articulation axis is located above the rear articulation point on all the travel of the moving member between the retracted position and the deployed position;
[0023] - the front articulation axis is located at the highest point of the moving carriage principal, in projection in the median vertical plane;
[0024] - the front articulation point is located in front of the front articulation axis;
[0025] - the main moving carriage has two side plates, each side plate having a point shape, the main displacement carriage comprising an upper cross member connecting the tops of the side plates;
[0026] - the slide is arranged in one of the side plates;
[0027] - the backrest support has two side uprights, each side upright comprising a lower region located below the rear hinge axis and an upper region located above the rear hinge axis, the lower arm being formed by the lower region of the side upright;
[0028] - the seat support comprises two longitudinal beams and a rear cross member, the side uprights of the backrest support being rotatably mounted on the rear cross member;
[0029] - in the retracted position, the value of the angle formed between the seat support and the backrest support in projection in the vertical median plane at the level of the rear articulation axis is greater than the value of the angle formed between the seat support and the backrest support in the inclined position, in projection in the vertical median plane;
[0030] - the base comprises a frame intended to be fixed to the floor of the cabin, and a turret, rotatably mounted relative to the frame around a vertical axis, the main displacement carriage being mounted at least partly above the turret, preferably being mounted mobile in translation in the turret.
[0031] The invention also relates to an aircraft cabin comprising a floor, and at least one aircraft seat comprising a seat structure as defined above.
[0032] The invention will be better understood on reading the following description, given solely by way of example, and made with reference to the appended drawings, in which:

[0042] - [Fig. 10] [Fig. 10] is a view similar to [Fig.5], in the inclined position.
[0043] An aircraft cabin 10 comprising a seat 12 provided with a seat structure 14 according to the invention is illustrated by figures 1 and 6. The cabin 10 comprises a floor 16 provided with rails 18 on which the seat 12 is mounted.
[0044] The seat 12 extends in a main direction P, which generally corresponds, in a nominal configuration, in the absence of rotation of the seat 12, to a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft. Thus, in the nominal configuration, a passenger seated in the seat 12 and who keeps his head straight, without pivoting it, looks in the main direction.
[0045] As visible in Figures 1 and 6, the seat 12 and its structure 14 are maneuverable between an upright position, visible in [Fig.l], notably used during taxiing, takeoff and landing of the aircraft, and an inclined position, notably a maximum inclination position called “Zero G” in which the seat 12 is inclined.
[0046] The seat 12 is furthermore maneuverable about a vertical axis AA' (visible in [Fig. 3]) to be pivoted between the nominal configuration and at least one configuration pivoted relative to the nominal configuration. Preferably, the nominal configuration corresponds to a central orientation without rotation of the seat 12 about the axis A-A', the seat 12 being able to be pivoted on either side of the nominal configuration in pivoted configurations.
[0047] With reference to figures 1 and 6, the seat 12 comprises a covering 20 which comprises a seat 22, for example formed from a cushion, a backrest 24, for example comprising lateral support arms 26, and a headrest 28.
[0048] The seat 12 optionally comprises a footrest 30, deployable from a front edge of the seat 22.
[0049] As will be seen below, the seat structure 14 carries the elements of the upholstery 20, in particular the seat 22, the backrest 24, the arms 26, the headrest 28, and the footrest 30, allowing relative movements between the elements of the upholstery 20, to move from the upright position to the inclined position and vice versa.
[0050] With reference to figures 2 to 5, and 7 to 10, the seat structure 14 comprises a base 40, intended to be mounted on the floor 16, in particular on the rails 18, the base 40 comprising a frame 42, a transverse displacement carriage 44, mounted movably on the frame 42 in a direction T transverse to the main direction P and a turret 46, rotatably mounted on the transverse displacement carriage 44, around the vertical pivot axis AA'.
[0051] The seat structure 14 further comprises a main movement carriage 48 mounted movably on the turret 46 in the main direction P, a seat support 50, carried by the main movement carriage 48, and a backrest support 52 articulated relative to the seat support 50 and relative to the main movement carriage 48.
[0052] The seat structure 14 further comprises a system 54 for articulating the seat support 50 on the main movement carriage 48 and a system 56 for articulating of the backrest support 52 on the seat support 50 and on the main moving carriage 48.
[0053] The seat structure 14 also comprises an actuator 58 for moving the backrest support 52 and the seat support 50 to move the seat structure 14 between the upright position and the inclined position.
[0054] The seat structure 14 further comprises a footrest support 60 (visible in [Fig.4]), and a masking assembly 62 (visible in [Fig.1]), intended to mask it from the outside under the upholstery 20.
[0055] The frame 42 ensures the fixing of the seat structure 14 on the floor 16, in particular via the rails 18.
[0056] It comprises two parallel pads 70 extending along the main direction P and at least one transverse bar 72, preferably two transverse bars 72 connecting the parallel pads 70 together.
[0057] Each skate 70 here has a trapezoid shape having a small base defined by its upper edge, and a large base defined by its lower edge.
[0058] The lower edge of each skate 70 is provided with a removable attachment mechanism on a rail 18 to fix the seat structure 14 on the floor 16 at a determined position adjustable along the rail 18.
[0059] The transverse bars 72 extend perpendicular to the pads 70.
[0060] The transverse displacement carriage 44 is mounted to move in translation on the frame 42 in the transverse direction T. It comprises a base body 74, defining for each transverse bar 72, a passage 76 for receiving the transverse bar 72.
[0061] The receiving passage 76 opens on either side of the body 64 parallel to the transverse direction T on the lateral faces of the body 74. In this example, it has an internal section of a shape complementary to the external section of each transverse bar 72. Thus, the body 74 is mounted in an exclusively sliding manner on the bars 72.
[0062] The body 74 further delimits a vertical orifice 78 opening upwards for receiving the turret 46.
[0063] The turret 46 is rotatably mounted in the vertical orifice 78 of the body 74 of the frame 42. It is thus pivotally mounted on either side of the nominal configuration relative to the transverse displacement carriage 44 around a vertical axis A-A' defined by the vertical orifice 78.
[0064] The turret 46 thus comprises a foot (not visible) inserted in the vertical orifice 78 and a support 80 projecting from the transverse displacement carriage 44, above the transverse displacement carriage 44.
[0065] The support 80 defines, along its lateral faces, two main passages 82 for guiding the translation of the main displacement carriage 48 in the direction main P. The main passages 82 extend horizontally, and open here on either side of the support 80.
[0066] In the nominal configuration, in the absence of rotation of the turret 46 around the vertical axis A-A', the main passages 82 extend along the main direction P.
[0067] The width LT of the turret, taken along the transverse direction T, is greater than the width LCT of the transverse displacement carriage 44, taken along the transverse direction T.
[0068] The main displacement carriage 48 is mounted to move in translation in the turret 46.
[0069] In the nominal configuration, in the absence of rotation around the vertical axis A-A', the main displacement carriage 48 is movable in translation along the main direction P between a front configuration and a rear configuration.
[0070] As seen in Figures 2 and 3, the main moving carriage 48 comprises a lower part mounted in the turret 46, and an upper part supporting the seat support 50 and the backrest support 52.
[0071] The lower part comprises a guide frame comprising at least one guide rod 90, preferably two parallel guide rods 90, each guide rod 90 being slidably mounted parallel to the main direction P in a main passage 82.
[0072] The guide frame further comprises a transverse rear tie rod 92, connecting the rear ends of the guide rods 90, and, for each guide rod 90, a front leg 94 for connection with the upper part of the main displacement carriage 48, projecting upwards from the front end of the guide rod 90.
[0073] The upper part is fixedly mounted on the lower part. In this example, it comprises a lower crosspiece 96 and an upper crosspiece 98. It further comprises two lateral flanges 100 connecting the crosspieces 96, 98, and for each flange 100, a horizontal connecting finger 102 with the lower part (visible in [Fig.2]).
[0074] The lower cross member 96 and the upper cross member 98 extend parallel to the transverse direction T.
[0075] The lower cross member 96 connects the ends of the vertical legs 94, above the body 74 of the turret 46. It extends laterally beyond the edges of the turret 86 on either side of the turret 46.
[0076] The upper cross member 98 extends above the lower cross member 96. It also extends to the rear of the lower cross member 96, between the lower cross member 96, and the rear end of the flanges 100.
[0077] The flanges 100 extend along the main direction P, parallel to it, away from each other.
[0078] In this example, each flange 100 has a triangular shape, with a vertex 102 located between the front end and the rear end of the flange 100. In this example, the vertex 102 extends substantially in the middle of the flange 100 between the ends of the flange 100, taken along the main direction P.
[0079] The upper cross member 98 connects the tops 102 of the flanges 100. The ends of the upper cross member 98 project beyond the flanges 100, towards the outside of the support structure 14.
[0080] The fingers 102 connect the rear ends of the flanges 100 to the tie rod 92. They extend horizontally and transversely.
[0081] The lower cross member 96 connects the front ends of the flanges 100.
[0082] In this example, the flanges 100 are partially perforated.
[0083] The width LCP of the main displacement carriage, taken along the transverse direction T, is greater than or equal to the width LT of the turret 46, taken along the same direction.
[0084] The seat support 50 comprises a frame comprising longitudinal beams 110 and cross members 112A, 112B connecting the longitudinal beams 110 at their front and rear ends.
[0085] Each main beam 110 extends along a respective side of the main travel carriage 48, adjacent a flange 100.
[0086] The length of each main beam 110 is greater than the length of the adjacent flange 100. Thus, the cross member 112A connecting the front ends of the flange 100 extends to the front of the lower cross member 96, and the cross member 112B connecting the rear ends of the main beams 110 preferably extends to the rear of the tie rod 92 of the main moving carriage 48.
[0087] The seat 22 is mounted on the seat support 50.
[0088] As will be described below, the seat support 50 is thus articulated on the main movement carriage 48, around a front articulation axis B-B'.
[0089] The front articulation axis B-B' extends parallel to the transverse direction T.
[0090] In projection in a median vertical plane of the seat structure 14, the front articulation axis B-B' is located between the front edge and the rear edge of the main movement carriage 48.
[0091] The front articulation axis B-B' extends along the upper cross member 98, at the level of the tops 102 of the flanges 100.
[0092] The articulation system 54 of the seat support 50 comprises here, for each main beam 110, an articulation pivot 120 secured to the main movement carriage 48, and an orifice 122 for receiving and guiding the pivot 120, arranged in the main beam 110.
[0093] In this example, each pivot 120 is formed by a respective projecting end of the upper crosspiece 98, which projects in the transverse direction T beyond the lateral flange 100. The orifice 122 is provided in a middle part of the main beam 110 in the transverse direction T.
[0094] The backrest support 52 comprises two parallel uprights 130 projecting upwardly and rearwardly relative to the main beams 110 of the seat support 50.
[0095] The backrest support 52 further comprises at least one rear plate 132 and / or a transverse member (not shown) connecting the uprights 130 to each other to keep them parallel to each other.
[0096] Each upright 130 is rotatably mounted relative to the seat support 50 around a rear articulation axis CC' parallel to the front articulation axis B-B'.
[0097] The rear articulation axis CC' divides the upright 130 into an upper part 138, located above the rear articulation axis C-C' and into a lower arm 140 located below and in front of the rear articulation axis C-C'.
[0098] The length of the arm 140 is less than the length of the upper part 138 of the upright 130, for example less than at least twice the length of the upper part 138.
[0099] Each upright 130 extends between the flanges 100, adjacent to a flange 100 opposite a main beam 110.
[0100] The backrest 24 as well as the headrest 28 are mounted on the backrest support 52.
[0101] The articulation system 56 of the backrest support 52 comprises in this example a pivot formed by the rear crosspiece 112B of the seat support 50, which passes through each upright 130 and by an orifice 144 for guiding the pivot 142, arranged in the upright 130 between the lower arm 140 and the upper part 138.
[0102] The articulation system 56 of the backrest support 52 further comprises a mechanism for guiding the movement of each upright 130 relative to the main movement carriage 48.
[0103] The guide mechanism comprises a slide 150, arranged in a lateral flange 100 adjacent to the upright 130, and a slide 152 formed here by a pin introduced in a sliding manner into the slide 150.
[0104] In this example, the slide 150 extends to the rear of the front articulation axis B-B', and to the front of the rear articulation axis C-C'. It extends here linearly, being inclined relative to a horizontal plane by an angle greater than 5° and for example between 10° and 20°.
[0105] The inclination of the slide 150 is directed upwards while moving from the rear to the front.
[0106] The slider 152 is mounted projecting transversely outwards from the lower arm 140 of the upright 130. It is slidably received in the slide 150 and follows the linear path of the slide 150.
[0107] The actuator 58 here comprises a cylinder comprising a cylinder body 160 and a member 162 deployable relative to the cylinder body 160 between a deployed position and a retracted position.
[0108] In this example, the cylinder body 160 is articulated at a front articulation point 164 on one of the lateral flanges 100 around a transverse front axis.
[0109] The front articulation point 164 is located at the rear of the front end of the side flange 100, below the front articulation axis BB' and at the front thereof. It is located at the rear of the front edge of the seat support defined by the front crossmember 112A.
[0110] The deployable member 162 is here formed by a cylinder rod. It is articulated on the lower arm 140 around a rear transverse axis at a rear articulation point 166 located at the level of the slide 152, or in the vicinity of the latter.
[0111] Retraction of the deployable member 162 from its deployed position to its retracted position moves the slider 152 forward in the slide 150 and together the lower arm 140 along the slide 150. Conversely, deployment of the deployable member 162 from its retracted position to its deployed position moves the slider 152 rearward in the slide 150 and together the lower arm 140 along the slide 150.
[0112] With particular reference to [Fig.5] and [Fig.10], the rear articulation point 166 is located below and to the front of the rear articulation axis C-C'. It is also located below and to the rear of the front articulation axis B-B'.
[0113] As visible in [Fig. 1], the masking assembly 62 advantageously comprises a lower cover 170 covering the base frame 42 upwards. In this example, the lower cover 170 has a substantially H-shape projecting onto the floor 16.
[0114] The masking assembly 62 further comprises a top cover 172 of downwardly tapered shape which covers on the sides, towards the front and towards the rear the transverse displacement carriage 44, the turret 46, the main displacement carriage 48 and the seat support 50.
[0115] The width of the upper cover 172, taken along the transverse direction T, along its lower edge is for example less than 95% of the width of the lower cover 172, taken along the transverse direction T, along its upper edge.
[0116] Due to the width of the support structure 14 gradually decreasing as it moves vertically from the seat support 50 to the frame 42, the shape of the upper cover 172 is tapered downwards. This gives the masking assembly 62 a pleasant aesthetic appearance, in particular by providing it with a tapered base, advantageously of an ovoid general shape, and not massive.
[0117] This downwardly tapered shape of the upper cover 172 results from the particular configuration of the arrangement of the transverse displacement carriage 44 directly on the frame 42, the articulation of the turret 46 on the transverse displacement carriage 44, and the mounting of the main displacement carriage 48 and the seat support 50 above the turret 46.
[0118] With reference to Figures 4 and 9, the footrest support 60 is here formed of a parallelogram articulated at the front of the seat support 50, actuable by a jack (not shown). It is deployable between a retracted position, in which the footrest 30 extends substantially vertically, resting at the front of the upper cover 172, and an active position projecting at the front of the seat support 50. It is advantageously articulated on the front crosspiece 112A of the seat support.
[0119] The operation of the seat 12 will now be described.
[0120] Initially, the seat 12 is for example in the upright position shown in the [Fig.l].
[0121] In this position, the cylinder rod 162 occupies its deployed position. The rear articulation point 166 and the slide 152 are located at the rear of the slide 150, relatively closer to the rear articulation axis C-C'.
[0122] The upper portion 138 of the upright 130 is straightened forward due to the lower arm 140 being held relatively downward and rearward.
[0123] In this position also, as illustrated by [Fig.4], the angle of inclination I of the seat support 50 relative to a horizontal plane PH is minimal. The rear articulation axis CC' is raised towards the front articulation axis B-B'. The front cross member 112A is lowered to a minimal height relative to the front articulation axis B-B'.
[0124] The inclination of the seat support 50 relative to a horizontal plane, measured by the straight line DS A connecting the points of intersection of the front articulation axis B-B' and the rear articulation axis C-C' with a plane perpendicular to these axes is less than 15° and in particular between 0° and 10°.
[0125] Similarly, the obtuse angle formed between the straight line DSA and the straight line DSD connecting the point of intersection of the rear articulation axis C-C' and the projection of the rear articulation point 166 in the same plane has a value less than 130° and for example between 110° and 120°.
[0126] In this position, the user can move the seat 12 in the transverse direction, via a movement of the transverse movement carriage 44 relative to the frame 42, by sliding the body 74 on the bars 72.
[0127] Similarly, the user can control the rotation of the seat 12 around the axis A-A', by generating a rotation of the turret 46, the main movement carriage 48 and the seat support 50 around the axis A-A' of rotation of the turret 46 relative to the transverse movement carriage 44.
[0128] Also still, the user can move the main displacement carriage 44 and the seat support 50 relative to the turret 46 by translation in the direction main P by sliding the guide rods 90 into the main passages 82 of the turret 46.
[0129] When the user wishes to tilt the seat 12, he controls the actuator 58 to move the cylinder rod 162 from its deployed position to its retracted position. This movement is guided by the sliding of the slider 152 in the slide 150, which raises the rear articulation point 166 and brings it closer to the front articulation axis B-B'.
[0130] This movement then produces a downward movement of the rear articulation axis CC' and a relative pivoting of the backrest support 52 backwards and downwards relative to the seat support 50.
[0131] The rear edge of the seat support, materialized by the rear cross member 112B, moves downwards and forwards by pivoting the seat support 50 around the rear articulation axis C-C'.
[0132] The front edge of the seat support, materialized by the front cross member 112A, moves upwards and backwards, lifting relative to the rear cross member 112B.
[0133] Thus, the obtuse angle formed between the line DS A and the line DSD increases, for example to a value greater than 130° and in particular between 140° and 160°.
[0134] Similarly, the angle of inclination I of the straight line DSA relative to a horizontal plane PH increases to a value greater than 15° and in particular between 20° and 30°.
[0135] When the slide 152 abuts against the front end of the slide 150, the seat 12 occupies its inclined position.
[0136] The user can then deploy the footrest support 60, to place the footrest 30 projecting at the front of the seat 22.
[0137] Thanks to the arrangement of the rear articulation point 166 at the rear of the front articulation axis B-B', over the entire travel of the deployable member 162 formed by the cylinder rod between the retracted position and the deployed position, it is possible to obtain a significant inclination of the backrest support 52 relative to the seat support 50 in the inclined position, by a very simple mechanism which uses a minimal number of parts and connections.
[0138] The aforementioned arrangement of the rear articulation point 166, and the configuration of the main movement carriage 48, and of the articulation systems 54, 56 of the seat support 50 and of the backrest support 52 thus significantly increase the reliability of maneuvering the seat 12 between its upright position and its inclined position, and reduce the overall mass of the seat.
[0139] In a variant, the slide 150 is delimited in the lower arm 140, and the slide 152 is mounted on the flange 100.
[0140] In a variation of each of the preceding embodiments, a pivot 120 is formed in each main beam 110, and an orifice 122 for the pivot 120 is provided in the side flange 100.
[0141] Similarly, in a variation of each of the preceding embodiments, a pivot 142 is provided on each upright 130, and a corresponding orifice 144 is provided in the corresponding beam 110.
