Description

Title of the invention: Motor vehicle airbag with vent cover

[0001] The invention relates to the safety of motor vehicles. The invention concerns high-speed frontal collisions. More specifically, the invention relates to a dashboard airbag for a motor vehicle. The invention is applied to a motor vehicle.

[0002] In anticipation of a possible collision, a motor vehicle is equipped with inflatable devices that, upon deployment, form protective airbags for the passengers. When a collision is detected, a pyrotechnic charge is ignited to inflate the safety device in a fraction of a second. Such an inflatable device, commonly called an airbag, is fitted to the dashboard, the steering wheel, or the side panels of the vehicle.

[0003] In the case of a front passenger airbag, the airbag extends from the dashboard, deploys, and inflates to protect the passenger and prevent their head from striking the windshield. Consequently, the airbag will interact with the windshield during its deployment. Under severe conditions, the windshield may shatter, and despite its laminated construction, glass fragments may damage the airbag.

[0004] External damage can then occur, through friction of the bag against the broken glass; and internal damage occurs when debris manages to penetrate the airbag through the vents. In the scenario where a piece of glass enters the bag through the vent during deployment, it can then be projected against the fabric. The debris is projected against the inner surface of the bag. This results in a "thermal" impact that will cause a hole in the fabric. The deflation of the airbag is no longer controlled. The airbag no longer provides the cushioning required to meet its specific safety requirements.

[0005] Document WO2018193688A1 describes an active venting mechanism comprising: a first vent hole formed in an inflatable safety cushion; an add-on part, a portion of which is connected to the external surface of the inflatable safety cushion, the add-on part being capable of opening and closing the vent hole according to the internal pressure of the inflatable safety cushion; a connecting element, one end of which is connected to the add-on part and the other end of which penetrates the interior of the inflatable safety cushion and is connected to the interior of the inflatable safety cushion; an opening disposed near the first vent hole and through which a portion of the add-on part or a portion of the connecting element passes; a restriction element through which the connecting element is inserted inside the airbag.

[0006] When the connecting element opens the first vent hole, glass debris remains likely to enter the airbag.

[0007] Document US20120074677Al presents an airbag for a motor vehicle. The airbag includes a vent for releasing the gas contained within the airbag, a cover element for opening or closing the vent, and a fastener for applying tension to the cover element. A seam formed by stitching the cover element to the airbag is located within a stitching region defined by a straight line at a predetermined distance from the vent, and a curved shape (the most curved form) formed by bringing the two ends of the straight line together. The curvature of the seam is adjusted according to the overlap width between the cover element and the outer edge of the vent.

[0008] The vent is formed on the front panel. When the cover is opened, exposing the ventilation opening, glass fragments from the windshield may enter.

[0009] US patent 8419054B2 describes an airbag that can inflate without the use of a high-power inflator, and an airbag device equipped with such an airbag. In one form, the airbag, when inflated, has a normally open vent hole located in a rear panel in a region extending toward the center of a steering wheel from the edge of the steering wheel, and a vent hole that can be opened located in a region extending outward from the steering wheel. The openable vent hole is covered by a cover. The cover and a strap inside the airbag are connected to each other by a fastener. From the start of airbag inflation, the cover is placed over the openable vent hole to close the vent hole.

[0010] If the cover is deployed and opened, debris may potentially enter through the vent hole. The presence of protruding debris in the airbag poses a risk of puncture. This reduces the protection afforded to a passenger, thereby compromising vehicle safety.

[0011] The invention aims to address at least one of the problems or drawbacks encountered in the prior art. In particular, the invention aims to limit the entry of glass fragments into a motor vehicle airbag. The invention also aims to limit the risk of tearing and the entry of glass fragments into a motor vehicle airbag.

[0040] Each feature introduced by the expression "preferably" given in relation to one of the aspects of the invention applies to all other aspects of the invention.

[0041] The invention will be well understood and other aspects and advantages will become clear upon reading the following description, given with reference to the attached figures listed below.

[0042] Fig. 1 is a side view of a motor vehicle according to the invention.

[0043] Figure 2 shows a top view of an inflatable bag in its deflated configuration. according to one embodiment of the invention.

[0044] Fig. 3 shows a top view of an inflatable bag in deflated configuration according to another embodiment of the invention.

[0045] Fig. 4 is a cross-section of an inflatable bag at the level of a vent in the inflated configuration according to the invention.

[0046] In the following description, the term "include" is synonymous with "include" and is not limiting in that it permits the presence of other elements in the motor vehicle or the safety device to which it relates. It is understood that the term "include" includes the terms "consist of".

[0047] In this description, the terms "longitudinal," "longitudinally," "transverse," and "transversely" are used with respect to the vehicle's frame of reference in the mounting configuration. "Longitudinal" refers to the vehicle's principal direction of travel. "Transverse" refers to a direction perpendicular to the vehicle's principal direction of travel. "Front" refers to the vehicle's principal direction of travel. "Rear" refers to the opposite of the front of the vehicle.

[0048] The X-axis represents the longitudinal direction, the Y-axis represents the transverse direction, and the Z-axis represents the vertical direction of the motor vehicle. These three axes define a right-handed trihedron whose orientation is preserved across the figures.

[0049] In this description, the ranges of values include the bounds that delimit them.

[0050] In this description, the terms "vertical" and "horizontal" are not to be understood in the strict sense of the term. Indeed, they allow an inclination of at most 20°, preferably at most 10°, more preferably at most 5°, and even more preferably at most 2°; with respect to the strict meaning of these terms.

[0051] In this description, the technical characteristics are defined in the mounting configuration of the safety device, in particular in the inflated configuration, unless otherwise explicitly stated.

[0052] Throughout the description, the different figures use the same reference signs to designate identical or similar entities.

[0053] Figure 1 represents a motor vehicle 10, according to an embodiment of the invention. The motor vehicle 10 comprises energy storage means and at least one motor (not shown) adapted to drive said motor vehicle 10.

[0054] The motor vehicle 10 comprises a structure 12. The structure 12 forms an outer body, or the main frame of the motor vehicle. The structure 12 delimits various compartments of the motor vehicle 10, including the passenger compartment 14, the cargo area, and the engine compartment (not shown). The passenger compartment 14 has front and rear seats.

[0055] At the front, the passenger compartment 14 is delimited by a windshield 16. The windshield 16 is attached to the structure 12. It forms a transparent screen. It comprises a pane of glass, preferably with two layers of glass bonded by an adhesive film. In the event of a high-speed frontal impact, for example at more than 15 km / h or 30 km / h, the windshield 16 is liable to shatter and release debris that spreads into the passenger compartment 14.

[0056] The passenger compartment 14 also receives a dashboard 18. The dashboard 18 is at the front. It is below the windshield 16. The dashboard 18 extends transversely. It is equipped with vehicle control devices such as the steering wheel, and information and entertainment interfaces.

[0057] The motor vehicle 10 includes at least one safety device 20. The safety device 20 is located in the front passenger compartment 14. The safety device 20 is positioned in the dashboard 18. It is preferably located on the passenger side, next to the driver's seat. The safety device 20 includes a Inflation module (not shown) of an inflatable bag 22. The inflatable bag 22 is a deployable component that is inflated by injecting a gas. When inflated, it becomes a protective cushion.

[0058] The motor vehicle 10 includes a crash detection system. If a crash meeting a specific criterion is detected, the detection system triggers the deployment of the airbag 22, which extends from the dashboard 18 to the seat to accommodate the passenger seated there. The airbag 22 acts as a shock absorber between the windshield 16 and the front seat.

[0059] In its inflated, i.e., deployed, configuration, the airbag 22 reaches the windshield 16. The airbag 22 has a front half 24 and a rear half 26. It also has an upper half 30 and a lower half 28. In order to modulate the force of the airbag 22, it includes at least one vent 32. During a frontal impact, when the airbag 22 is fully inflated and its internal pressure reaches a peak, the airbag 22 deflates significantly when the passenger's body makes contact with it. This lowers the internal pressure and reduces the force exerted by the airbag 22 on the passenger's body. This feature limits potential injuries.

[0060] The vent 32 is arranged in the front half 24. This prevents contact with the passenger from closing it. Similarly, the vent is placed in the upper half 30 so that it is not obstructed by the dashboard 18. These features preserve the control of internal pressure, and therefore safety.

[0061] The motor vehicle can, for example, be a private motor vehicle or a commercial motor vehicle.

[0062] Figure 2 shows a flat view of an airbag 22 of a safety device 20 of a motor vehicle, according to an embodiment of the invention. The motor vehicle may correspond to the one shown in relation to Figure 1. The airbag 22 is shown flat, in a deflated configuration.

[0063] The airbag 22 comprises an outer casing 34. The outer casing 34 is formed from a single piece of fabric, referred to as the first piece of fabric. It is airtight. The fabric is woven for its strength. The outer casing 34 has an outer surface 36. The outer surface 36 is intended to face the windshield and the passenger in the deployed configuration, during inflation. The airbag 22 further comprises a cover 40 covering the outer surface 36 and forming a pocket 42 against the outer surface 36. The cover 40 is formed from a second piece of fabric.

[0064] The cover 40 is symmetrical. The cover 40 is an upper cover. It is an outer cover. The cover 40 is a protective cover. The cover 40 forms a lining, or a protective layer, for the outer casing 34. By extending over at least 25% of the outer surface 36, it protects the outer casing 34 in contact with the windshield. It forms a sacrificial layer.

[0065] The inflatable bag 22 has at least one vent 32 (shown in dashed lines), preferably two vents 32, in this case a left vent and a right vent. Each vent 32 passes through the outer casing 34. It opens onto the outer surface 36, opposite the cover 40. Its passage area is calibrated to allow an airflow that modulates the pressure peak during inflation. The vent 32 forms a passage. It creates an exhaust, an outlet from the inflatable bag 22. It is surrounded by a reinforcing seam.

[0066] The cover 40 covers each vent 32. The cover 40 forms a pocket 42 for each vent 32. Thus, the cover 40 delimits a left pocket and a right pocket; each associated with one of the vents 32. Each vent 32 communicates with its associated pocket 42. Each pocket 42 houses one of the vents 32. The pocket 42 forms a compartment.

[0067] The inflatable bag 22 is symmetrical. In the following description, reference will be made only to one of the two sides of the inflatable bag 22. Each feature described in relation to one of the pockets 42 or one of the vents 32 applies to the other pocket 42 or the other vent 32, unless the contrary is explicitly stated.

[0068] The pocket 42 comprises a bottom 44 and an inlet 46 opposite the bottom 44. The vent 32 is between the inlet 46 and the bottom 44. The bottom 44 can be a central point in the cavity formed by the pocket 42.

[0069] The safety device 20 is adapted so that, in the inflated configuration of the airbag 22 in the motor vehicle, the inlet 46 is vertically positioned below the floor 44 in order to direct the inlet 46 downwards. Thus, the inlet 46 is opposite the windshield from which the glass fragments originate. The inlet is in the opposite direction to the main propagation of the glass fragments. Therefore, in the event of an incident causing the windshield to break, the probability of debris entering the airbag 22 through a vent is greatly reduced. The airbag 22 is protected from the risk of tearing and puncture from the inside.

[0070] The inflatable bag 22 includes a bent seam 48. The bent seam 48 is generally a first seam, or a curved seam. The inflatable bag 22 includes other seams. The bent seam 48 connects the cover 40 to the outer casing 34. The bent seam 48 extends along the entire length of the outer casing 34. It extends primarily longitudinally. The bent seam 48 delimits the pocket 42. Generally, the bent seam 48 is a joining line. According to an alternative embodiment of the invention, the joining line includes a weld. The inlet 46 is a fictitious straight line connecting two convex segments of the bent seam 48. In this case, the inlet 46 passes through the vent 32.

[0071] The safety device 20 includes an inflation module 50 (shown in dashed lines). The inlet 46 faces away from the inflation module 50. The module The inflation module 50 is connected to an inflation port 52 of the inflatable bag 22. The inflation port 52 is a front opening, or inlet. The inflation module 50 may include, for example, a pyrotechnic charge. They generally include a gas source. Thanks to the inflation module 50, the outer envelope 34 can be inflated in a fraction of a second, for example, in 10 to 30 milliseconds, to form frontal protection for the occupant.

[0072] The pocket 42 includes a first length 54 which is at least three times longer than the vent 32. Thus, the pocket 42 forms a trap that captures glass fragments. It intercepts and then blocks them. Consequently, the debris spreads less within the passenger compartment, and again, it has less chance of entering through the vent 32. The lengths are maximum lengths. They are measured along the inlet 46. The vent 32 is, for example, circular. The length of the vent 32 is preferably its inner diameter 56. The first length 54 is at least three times longer than the inner diameter 56. The inner diameter 56 is between 5 mm and 50 mm, preferably between 10 mm and 40 mm, and more preferably between 15 mm and 30 mm.

[0073] The airbag 22 has a front half 24 and a rear half 26. The halves are measured longitudinally; in the inflated configuration, and / or deflated and flat. The vent 32 is arranged in the front half 24. The airbag 22 is adapted to deploy so that the cover 40 is vertically aligned with the windshield. Optionally, the airbag 22 is adapted to deploy so that the cover 40 is against the windshield.

[0074] The cover 40 includes a free flap 60 extending from the inlet 46 to the opposite side of the bottom 44. The free flap 60 covers the vent 32. The free flap 60 is free of any connecting seam to the outer casing 34. The free flap 60 extends from the angled seam 48. Following the inflation of the airbag 22, air can escape through the vent 32, and then between the outer casing 34 and the free flap 60 when the latter moves away from it. Thus, the free flap 60 temporarily closes the vent 32. It contributes to safety.

[0075] Figure 3 shows a flat view of an airbag 22 of a safety device 20 of a motor vehicle, according to an embodiment of the invention. The motor vehicle may correspond to the one shown in relation to Figure 1. The safety device 20 is similar to that shown in relation to Figure 2. It differs from it in that the cover 40 is split. The airbag 22 is symmetrical.

[0076] The inflatable bag 22 comprises an outer casing 34 having an outer surface 36; at least one cover 40 covering the outer surface 36 and forming a pocket 42 against the outer surface 36; at least one vent 32 passing through the outer casing 34 and communicating with the pocket 42. The pocket 42 comprises a bottom 44 and an opening 46 opposite the bottom 44. Each pocket 42 is demarcated by an angled seam 48 whose ends delimit the opening 46. The angled seam 48 describes an arc of at least 180° around the vent 32. It forms a semicircle and then continues opposite the bottom; beyond the vent 32. It describes a letter “C”.

[0077] The vent 32 is located between the inlet 46 and the bottom 44, the safety device being configured so that, in the inflated configuration of the airbag 22, the inlet 46 is vertically below the bottom 44 in order to direct the inlet downwards. The inlet 46 is then counter-current to the projection of glass fragments emanating from the windshield when it shatters during a collision. The inlet 46 includes a downward inlet direction.

[0078] The at least one vent 32 includes a left vent. The airbag 22 further includes a right vent. The at least one cover 40 includes a left cover covering the left vent, and a right cover covering the right vent. The left and right covers are separate and distinct. They are transversely separated. The airbag 22, in particular the outer surface 36, has a separation 62 between the left and right covers. The separation 62 is a transverse separation. This lightens the airbag 22.

[0079] The airbag 22 is structurally and functionally configured to deploy so that each cover 40 is vertically aligned with the windshield. Each cover 40 includes a free flap 60 extending from the inlet 46 towards the opposite side of the bottom 44. Each free flap 60 is at a distance from the associated vent 32 and covers the outer surface 36.

[0080] The outer casing 34 comprises a longitudinal seam 64 and a piece of fabric 66. The piece of fabric 66 forms a loop closed on itself by the longitudinal seam 64. The latter is located in its lower half. It preferentially extends along the entire length of the outer casing 34. The piece of fabric 66 forms a closed loop around the inflation module 50. Said piece of fabric 66 has two edges joined by said longitudinal seam 64. Longitudinally, the inlet 46 is located behind the inflation module 50. The inlet 46 is vertically positioned between the bottom 44 and the longitudinal seam 64.

[0081] Figure 4 shows a cross-section of a vent 32 of an airbag 22 for a motor vehicle safety device, according to an embodiment of the invention. The motor vehicle may correspond to the one shown in relation to one of Figures 1 to 3.

[0082] The cover 40 fits snugly against the outer casing 34. During inflation of the airbag 22, they are pressed against each other. The airbag 22, in particular the vent 32, includes an exhaust vent 68 directed from the bottom 44 towards the inlet 46 of the pocket 42. The exhaust vent 68 corresponds to the direction of flow gas is expelled from pocket 42. The bottom 44 is formed by the angled seam 48. According to the exhaust direction 68, the inflation module is behind the inlet 46. According to the exhaust direction 68, the inflation module is along pocket 42. This configuration tends to orient the outlet substantially towards the rear; or rather, opposite the windshield.

[0083] The cover 40 includes a free flap 60 extending from the inlet 46 towards the opposite side of the bottom 44. The free flap 60 covers the vent 32. The free flap 60 is downstream of the inlet 46. In its inflated configuration, viewed from the front, the inflatable bag 22 is generally circular. It surrounds a central axis 72 extending longitudinally.

[0084] The inlet 46 is below the vent 32. The bottom 44 is above the vent 32. The bottom 44 includes a high point 70. The inlet 46 is vertically opposite the high point 70. The free flap 60 is wider than the vent 32 and / or the depth of the pocket 42. The depth is a maximum depth. It is measured from the inlet to the bottom 44, preferably to the high point 70.

[0085] The cover 40 prevents the outer casing 34 from tearing at the vent 32 in case of contact with the windshield, since the cover 40 forms a protective layer. It creates an additional thickness. In particular, it prevents the outer casing 34 from tearing at the vent 32, which would enlarge the vent and no longer sufficiently restrict the outgoing airflow 74. The cover 40, especially its free flap 60, forms a flexible barrier between the vent 32 and the glass fragments 76.

[0086] The invention comprises the combination of all the embodiments illustrated by all the figures.

[0087] Figures 2 and 3 are isometric views. They each respect a specific scale, real angles and real proportions.
