Method of operating an adaptive cruise control system (2) for a motor vehicle (1), the adaptive cruise control (2) allowing the speed of the motor vehicle (1) to be regulated according to the movement of a target vehicle preceding the motor vehicle (1), the method comprising the following steps: - while the motor vehicle (1) is in motion, detection of at least one event of deactivation of the adaptive cruise control (2) due to a vehicle user, - automatic analysis of this at least one event, and - as a result of the analysis, automatic modification of an operating parameter of the adaptive cruise control (2).
