Abstract
The invention relates to systems and methods comprising an electromechanical brake used downhole to provide dynamic or static braking capabilities while absorbing or otherwise reducing shock loads. The electromechanical brake can be used to control a downhole electromechanical linear actuator for the production of underground fluid. In some examples, it may be desirable for an electromechanical linear actuator to maintain a retracted position during certain safety and / or maintenance operations. The electromechanical brake comprises a brake housing, a first armature arranged in rotation within the brake housing, a second armature arranged in rotation within the brake housing for rotation by a motor, an electric coil which can be excited to push the second armature into axial engagement with the first armature, and a rotating spring intended to drive the first armature towards a neutral rotational position relative to the brake housing while allowing limited rotation of the first armature relative to the brake housing.
