Abstract
A wearable impact sensing device is attached to the mastoid process of a user to monitor impacts to the user’s head. The device includes a wearable unit 2 and an attachment means. The wearable unit 2 has an outer shell containing a plurality of inertial measurement units (e.g. accelerometer, gyroscope), a microcontroller, an antenna, an electrical system, and a battery with charging means (see fig 3). The attachment temporarily fixes the wearable unit 2 to the mastoid process behind the ear. The attachment means may be a single use adhesive pad (6, fig 2). Impact event measurements are recorded and transmitted to a remote viewing device 30 (e.g. mobile phone). A case (12, fig 2) is provided to charge, store and transport the wearable device and attachment pads. A charging station (112, fig. 2) may be provided for multiple devices or multiple cases. The device may be used to assess head injury in sports and provides a detection unit that is not specific to a person, wearable item or sport.
