Abstract

A component 200 comprises first and second walls 202, 204, a coating 203 applied to the first wall, a hole 208 formed in the coating and the first wall, the hole defining a hole centreline, and a bulge 210 coupled to the second wall and intersecting the hole centreline 212, the bulge cooperating with the second wall to define a bulge thickness that is greater than the wall thickness. The component is preferably a component of a gas turbine engine and the hole a cooling hole. A method of forming the component comprises applying the coating to the first wall and removing the portion of the coating covering the hole, preferably using a laser drilling process. The drilling process may form a blind hole 602 in the second wall. The blind hole and the bulge cooperate to define a minimum wall thickness that is equal to or greater than the second wall thickness. The bulge overcomes the problem of the second wall thickness being reduced during coating removal to reopen the hole.
