Abstract
Description
Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a fastener measuring device, in particular device for measuring nuts and bolts or the like; more particularly a mechanical, non-digital way of measuring. Background There is a tendency in many societies across the world to turn away from mechanical and analogue solutions to problems, due to a perceived simplicity of digitisation. However in many other situations it has becoming increasingly clear that digital solutions are prone to problems, such as battery levels, as well as having shorter lifespans and larger environmental costs. It can be difficult to accurately and efficiently measure the size of nuts and bolts or similar fasteners. Prior Art WO 2016 126 277 (ZUTHER) discloses a wrench selector system, comprising: a housing including a display unit; a first prong and a second prong protruding from said housing; a first gripping and a second gripping, wherein said first gripping and said second gripping are adjoined to said first prong and said second prong respectively; and a control button positioned on said first gripping to allow for computing of at least one of a fastener head or nut, wherein said computing is displayed on said display unit. US 2009 0 056 160 (HU) discloses a caliper comprising: a first leg including a first end and a second end having a first abutting portion, with the first leg further including a first slot between the first and second ends thereof and with the first leg further including a first scale; a second leg including a first end pivotably connected to the first end of the first leg, with the second leg further including a second end having a second abutting portion, with the first and second abutting portion of the first and second legs being adapted to abut against two opposite sides of an object to be gauged by the caliper; and an indicator slideably received in the first and second slots of the first and second legs. US 2 735 185 (NAPHTAL) discloses a drafting instrument of the type described, the combination of; a first flat arm comprising a parallel edged straight edge portion and an integral circular hinge portion having a shallow concentric recess therein of nearly the same diameter as the hinge portion, a separate printed graduated scale in said recess, a second arm comprising a parallel edges straight edge portion and an integral circular hinge portion offset so that the bottom surfaces of the straight edge portions are co-planar when the hinge portions are overlapped, said second arm being formed a transparent, tough, moldable material and having a short focus magnifying lens cast integral on the hinge portion and disposed to magnify the portion of the scale lying below it, and means integral with the hinge portions inter, engaging to pivot the arms for relative angular movement the extent of which is indicated on the scale beneath the said lens. Summary of the Invention According to the present invention there is provided a fastener measuring device comprising two arms and two jaws, wherein the jaws are separated by a first length in a first position and the arms are connected at an intermediate pivot, so as to allow the arms to pivot and allow the jaws to separate to a second length in a second position, and a gauge, the gauge located on an arm to display a measurement related to the length between the jaws. In this way the device of the present invention provides a means of easily and repeatedly measuring a large variety of fasteners such as nuts and bolts. In some embodiments of the device the jaw deviates from an axis defined by the arm. In some embodiments of the device the jaw comprises a rounded jaw end. In some embodiments of the device the device comprises a first arm that has a wide second end distal the jaw with a radially splayed surface. In some embodiments of the device the device comprises a splayed distal end surface to the first jaw which provides the gauge. In some embodiments of the device the second arm has a second end distal the jaw, which second end of the second arm comprises a pointer. In some such embodiments of the device the pointer is located at a perforation through the second arm. In some embodiments of the device the perforation comprises a line through the perforation. In some embodiments of the device the device comprises a magnifying means over the gauge. In some embodiments of the device the gauge comprises an arcuate line with measurement indications, which measurement indications relate to imperial nut sizing and / or relate to metric nut sizing. A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the Figures in which: Brief Description of Figures Figure 1 shows an isometric view of an embodiment of the device according to the present invention, with jaws separated by a first length; Figure 2 shows a reverse isometric view of the embodiment of the device as shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 shows an isometric view of the embodiment of the device shown in Figure 1, with jaws separated by a second length; Figure 4 shows a reverse isometric view of the embodiment of the device as shown in Figure 3; Figure 5 shows an exploded isometric view of the embodiment of the device shown in Figure 1; and Figure 6 shows a reverse exploded isometric view of the embodiment of the device shown in Figure 1. Detailed Description of Figures With reference to the figures there is shown an embodiment of a fastener measuring device 99 comprising two arms 1,3 and two jaws 11,31, wherein the jaws are separated by a first length and the arms are connected at an intermediate pivot 37, so as to allow the arms to pivot and allow the jaws to separate to a second length, and a gauge 33, the gauge located on an arm to display a measurement related to the length between the jaws. In particular reference to the pictured embodiment the embodiment comprises two main parts, each formed in a rigid plastics, metal or alloy, which parts are joined at a pivot. The parts comprise the arms, which arms have jaws at a first end. A first arm 1 comprises a deeper jaw 31, whereby the first end 30 of the first arm has a depth equivalent to approximately double the depth of the second arm 3, whereby the first arm has a side wall 32 that covers the second arm 1 in the second position. This side wall 32 is substantially triangular in plan view, discontinues proximate the pivot 37, and provides a rearwards extension of the jaw 31 of the first end of the first arm, such that the jaws will meet in the second position, and the first jaw will extend above the second jaw. In this way the first arm is predominantly above the second arm. The second arm 1 comprises a second end 40 hat splays outwards away from the first arm’s second end 20. The second end 40 of the second arm 1 comprises a flat surface 12 which includes an arcuate line 13 for providing the gauge. This line includes a plurality of measurement indications (not shown), which are related to imperial and metric sizing of nuts, which in turn relates to a measurement of a nut between the flats, at the jaws; whereby the jaws pivot about the pivot 37 and the distal second ends likewise pivots about the pivot, and the second arm of the first arm moves in an arcuate path along the surface 12 at the second end 20 of the second arm 1. The second end 40 of the first arm 3 comprises a circular perforation 33, through which a user may view the measurement indications on the second arm. The perforation further comprises two opposing pointers 34 at opposing circumferential points, and a magnifying lens insert 35. The pointers are engraved arrows, with a pad-printed line on the lens allow for accurate readings. The magnifying lens has a line 36 through it, extending between the pointers, so as to clearly indicate which measurement indication is relevant. The device thereby measures the distance between flats on nuts or bolts being the distance between the jaws. The gauge comprises a line that is engraved and / or and plots the standard nut sizes (M1 to M33) according to the measurement across the flats, wherein the magnifying lens is a biconvex lens that magnifies this rule allowing for easy reading of the measurements. 50mm 105mm The arms are a cast stainless steel with chrome finish and an integrated threaded pivot allows for a sleek, screwless finish and comprises a stainless steel insert 82, stainless steel anti-vibration crinkle washer 73 providing resistance and ensuring the tool holds the measurements taken, and a stainless steel pivot M3 bolt 37. Two rubber gaskets 84,83 secures the lens 85 in place in a metal or alloy holder 84 without damaging it. The invention has been described by way of examples only and it will be appreciated that variation may be made to the above-mentioned embodiments without departing from the scope of protection as defined by the claims.
