Abstract

An electric motor (fig.1, 10) for an appliance (e.g. a vacuum cleaner) comprising a frame 52 having a plurality of diffuser vanes 56 and a stator assembly (fig.1, 18) having a plurality of winding portions 34 wherein the winding portions are at least partially disposed between adjacent diffuser vanes. This solution allows for larger stator assemblies to be provided without increasing the size of the frame and / or can can facilitate cooling of the stator coils. Some adjacent diffuser vanes may comprise no windings between them. The diffuser vanes may extend between inner and outer annular wallsof the frame. The windings may extend through a recess in the annular inner wall. [Figure 4B]
