AI Technical Summary
Technical Problem
Existing printing technologies face challenges in accurately estimating positional variations of substrates due to mechanical and thermal fluctuations, leading to image distortion and misregistration, especially in high-speed printing processes.
Method used
An estimation method using an event-based camera to capture high-speed images of measurement patterns printed on the substrate, allowing for real-time measurement and estimation of positional variations, which are then used to correct ink ejection positions.
Benefits of technology
This method effectively estimates positional variations of substrates while minimizing the increase in data capacity, thereby reducing image distortion and improving print quality, especially in multi-color printing.

Abstract
To provide a technique that can properly estimate a position variation of a substrate, while suppressing an increase in data capacity of an image for analysis.SOLUTION: An estimation method estimates variations of parts of a substrate caused by velocity change and expansion / contraction of the substrate, in a printing device that makes a head discharge ink to a surface of the substrate, while conveying the substrate in a long belt shape. The estimation method includes: a measurement pattern printing step (S201) of discharging ink onto the substrate at a predetermined time interval to print a pattern for measurement; an image obtaining step (S202) of photographing the pattern for measurement on the substrate with an event base camera; a measuring step (S203) of calculating measurement variations from the photographed image; and an estimating step (S204) of obtaining estimated variations after printing in a non-printing area at an upstream side of the head, on the basis of the measured variations. The image photographed with the event base camera includes information about increase and decrease in light quantities of each pixel. This can appropriately estimate positional variation of the substrate, while suppressing an increase in data capacity of an image for analysis.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 9
