Abstract

To solve problems such as an inexpensive large scale supply source of hydrogen and an increase in electric power used in an electric furnace, while hydrogen iron-making is also made into a test plant as a reduction measure of carbon dioxide emission.SOLUTION: A large amount of water gas and hydrogen can be produced from biomass such as trees and bamboo. In integrated coal gasification combined cycle power generation, hydrogen is efficiently produced from water gas, and biomass can also be used instead of coal. Biomass can also be used instead of coal in a multi-stage hydrogen generator. Inexpensive sources of water gas and hydrogen are not a concern. Water gas and hydrogen from biomass may be directly combusted in the lower part of a blast furnace to supply the amount of heat required for ironmaking reduction. A deterioration phenomenon of gas release during hydrogen iron-making in a blast furnace is also circumvented by using solid biomass (bamboo or trees) having compressive strength equivalent to that of coke. When only water gas or hydrogen is combusted, a water gasification reaction with biomass occurs in the blast furnace, and ironmaking reduction occurs with the generated water gas. Therefore, burner combustion in the lower part of the blast furnace is also possible, and there is a high possibility that a converter is unnecessary.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
