Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to a laundry fragrance composition. In particular, the present invention relates to a laundry fragrance composition comprising water, a solid carrier, a crosslinked cellulose ether, the crosslinked cellulose ether containing 0.1-0.6% by weight of polyether groups, based on the weight of the crosslinked cellulose ether, and a fragrance additive, the laundry fragrance composition being in solid form.

[0002] For decades, consumers have been demanding to provide fragrance to laundry during the washing process. Currently, many scented fabric softeners are available on the market for consumers. Such products typically combine fragrance with softeners and conditioning agents to provide laundry with benefits such as fresh smell, softness, no static electricity, no wrinkles, or easy ironing. Some consumers want more fragrance benefits. Such consumers are called scent seekers and are known to over-inject laundry products, such as laundry detergents and fabric softeners, to provide laundry with the desired freshness. There is still a need to provide consumers with fragrance delivery products that provide laundry with enhanced freshness. Such fragrance compositions should be able to be used by consumers independently of other laundry products, so that the laundry fragrance level desired by each consumer can be obtained in a cost-effective manner.

[0003] A laundry scent additive is disclosed by Aouad in U.S. Patent No. 9,453,189, which allows the consumer to control the amount of scent imparted to laundry. Aouad discloses a composition comprising a plurality of pastilles, the pastilles comprising (a) polyethylene glycol and (b) friable fragrance microcapsules, the fragrance microcapsules comprising an encapsulated fragrance, each of the pastilles having a mass of about 0.95 mg to about 2 g, and each of the pastilles having a hemispherical or compressed hemispherical shape.

[0004] Nevertheless, there remains a need for new laundry fragrance additives. In particular, it would be desirable to replace a portion of the solid carrier in fragrance additives with water to reduce the cost of conventional laundry fragrance compositions while retaining the structural and fragrance delivery properties associated with such systems.

[0005] The present invention provides a laundry fragrance composition comprising 5 to 40% by weight of water, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition; 35 to 93.95% by weight of a solid carrier, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition; 0.05 to 5% by weight of a crosslinked cellulose ether, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition, which crosslinked cellulose ether contains 0.1 to 0.6% by weight of polyether groups, based on the weight of the crosslinked cellulose ether; and 1 to 25% by weight of a fragrance additive, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition, wherein the laundry fragrance composition is in solid form.

[0006] The present invention provides a laundry fragrance composition comprising 5-40% by weight of water, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition; 35-93.95% by weight of a solid carrier, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition; 0.05-5% by weight of a crosslinked cellulose ether, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition, which crosslinked cellulose ether contains 0.1-0.6% by weight of polyether groups, based on the weight of the crosslinked cellulose ether; and 1-25% by weight of a fragrance additive, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition, wherein the laundry fragrance composition is solid and the crosslinked cellulose ether is an irreversibly crosslinked cellulose ether.

[0007] The present invention relates to a laundry fragrance composition comprising: (a) 5 to 40% by weight of water, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition; (b) 35 to 93.95% by weight of a solid carrier, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition; (c) 0.05 to 5% by weight of a crosslinked cellulose ether, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition, the crosslinked cellulose ether containing 0.1 to 0.6% by weight of polyether groups, based on the weight of the crosslinked cellulose ether; (d) 1 to 25% by weight of a fragrance additive, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition; and (e) 0.008 to less than 0.1% by weight of a drainage aid component, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance composition, the drainage aid component comprising: (i) 40 to 99% by weight, based on the weight of the drainage aid component, of which 0 to 60 mol % of units of formula I and 40 to 100 mol % of units of formula II R x 1 SiO (4-x) / 2 (I) R y 1 R z 2 SiO (4-y-z) / 2 (II) wherein x is selected from the group consisting of 0, 1, 2, and 3; y is selected from the group consisting of 0, 1, and 2; z is selected from the group consisting of 1 and 2, with the proviso that y+z is 1, 2, or 3; 1 are independently selected from hydrogen, a hydroxyl group, and a group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms; 2 -A c R 3 A is a divalent linking group; c is selected from the group consisting of 0 and 1; and each R 3 are independently selected from groups having 9 to 35 carbon atoms; (ii) an organopolysiloxane comprising an organosilicon resin in an amount of 1 to 30% by weight, based on the weight of the drainage aid component; and (iii) an organosilicon resin in an amount of 0 to 30% by weight, based on the weight of the drainage aid component, of a hydrophobic additive; wherein the laundry fragrance composition is a solid; and the crosslinked cellulose ether is an irreversibly crosslinked cellulose ether.

[0008] The present invention provides a method for scenting laundry, the method comprising the steps of: loading a laundry scenting composition of the present invention into a washing machine or laundry basin; adding fabric articles to the washing machine or laundry basin; loading water into the washing machine or laundry basin; and applying the water and the laundry scenting composition to the fabric articles, wherein the scent additive comprises a perfume applied to the fabric articles. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0009] Surprisingly, it has been found that the addition of a crosslinked cellulose ether, which comprises 0.1 to 0.6% by weight of polyether groups, based on the weight of the crosslinked cellulose ether, makes it possible to replace a portion of the solid carrier used in laundry fragrance formulations with water, while maintaining the Shore A hardness of the composition and maintaining (or improving) the delivery of perfume to the laundry.

[0010] Unless otherwise indicated, ratios, percentages, parts, etc. are by weight. Weight percentages (or wt%) in a composition are percentages of dry weight, i.e., excluding any water that may be present in the composition. Percentages of monomer units in a polymer are percentages of solids weight, i.e., excluding any water present in a polymer emulsion.

[0011] As used herein, unless otherwise indicated, the terms "weight average molecular weight" and "Mw" are used interchangeably to refer to weight average molecular weight when measured in a conventional manner using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and conventional standards such as polystyrene standards. The technique of GPC is discussed in detail in Modem Size Exclusion Chromatography, WW Yau, JJ Kirkland, DDBly; Wiley-Interscience, 1979, and A Guide to Materials Characterization and Chemical Analysis, JP Sibilia; VCH, 1988, p.81-84. Weight average molecular weight is reported herein in units of Daltons.

[0012] As used herein and in the appended claims, the term "DS" means the number of alkyl-substituted OH groups per anhydroglucose unit in a cellulose ether, as determined by the Zeisel method.

[0013] As used herein and in the appended claims, the term "DS(methyl)" or "DS(M)" refers to the number of methyl-substituted OH groups per anhydroglucose unit in a cellulose ether as determined by the Zeisel method.

[0014] As used herein and in the appended claims, the term "MS" means the number of moles of etherifying reagent bound as an ether per mole of anhydroglucose units as hydroxyalkyl substituents in a cellulose ether, as determined by the Zeisel method.

[0015] As used herein and in the appended claims, the term "MS(hydroxyethyl)" or "MS(HE)" refers to the number of moles of etherifying reagent bound as an ether per mole of anhydroglucose unit as a hydroxyethyl substituent in a cellulose ether, as determined by the Zeisel method.

[0016] As used herein and in the appended claims, the term "MS(hydroxypropyl)" or "MS(HP)" refers to the number of moles of etherifying reagent bound as an ether per mole of anhydroglucose unit as a hydroxypropyl substituent in a cellulose ether, as determined by the Zeisel method.

[0017] The term "Zeisel method" refers to the Zeisel cleavage procedure for determining MS and DS. See G. Bartelmus and R. Ketterer, Zeitschrift für Analytische Chemie, Vol. 286 (1977, Springer, Berlin, DE), pages 161-190.

The perfume may provide an aromatherapy effect such as providing a relaxing or refreshing feeling.

[0039] The term "pro-perfume" as used herein and in the appended claims refers to a perfume precursor that releases a desired odor and / or perfume molecule through the cleavage of chemical bonds. Typically, a pro-perfume is a desired perfume ingredient that is chemically bound to a carrier (preferably the carrier is slightly volatile or barely volatile). [0066] Synthesis 1: Crosslinked cellulose ether The crosslinker used in Synthesis 1 had a molecular weight of approximately 400 daltons and had the formula [ka] where n is 5.7-6.7) (EPILOX™ M985 poly(propylene glycol) diglycidyl ether crosslinker available from Leuna-Harze GmbH, Leuna, DE).

[0067] Milled cellulose floc (1.5 mol) was added to a 5 L autoclave. The autoclave was purged with nitrogen gas three times and the contents of the autoclave were then heated to 40° C. Dimethyl ether (DME, 4.7 mol / mol anhydroglucose units (AGU)) and methyl chloride (MCl, 3.2 mol / mol AGU) were then injected into the autoclave. Caustic soda (NaOH, 50% strength by weight in water, 1.9 mol NaOH / mol AGU) was added to the autoclave in three portions over a period of 2 minutes at a temperature of 40° C. The reaction mixture was held at 40° C. for 30 minutes. Ethylene oxide (0.45 mol / mol AGU) was then added and the reaction mixture was held at 40° C. for 10 minutes. Crosslinker (EPILOX™ M985 crosslinker, 0.0025 mol / mol AGU) was dissolved in 20 mL of isopropanol and added to the contents of the autoclave in six portions at 30 second intervals. The contents of the autoclave were then heated to 80° C. within 40 min. At 80° C., a water-soluble monovalent copper ligand (MCL2, 1.3 mol / mol AGU) was rapidly injected into the autoclave. NaOH (0.67 mol / mol AGU) was then added in seven portions over 30 min, followed by a cook-off period of 70 min at 80° C. Following this, the product crosslinked cellulose ether was washed in hot (>95° C.) water, neutralized with formic acid, granulated, dried and milled.

[0068] Comparative Examples C1-C6 and Examples 1-2: Laundry scenting compositions The solid laundry fragrance compositions of Comparative Examples C1-C6 and Examples 1-2 were prepared using the amounts of ingredients listed in Table 1 using the following procedure: Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added to a flask and heated to 80°C to melt. The additives were then added slowly to the molten PEG while stirring. The flask contents were then cooled to 65°C and the fragrance was then added to the flask contents while stirring. The flask contents were then poured onto a smooth metal surface at room temperature to obtain a solid product of the laundry fragrance composition in the form of solid flakes. [Table 1]

[0069] hardness The indentation hardness of the solid laundry scent compositions prepared according to Comparative Examples C1-C4 and Example 1 was measured according to ASTM D 2240 using a durometer from Shore Instrument and Manufacturing Co. The average Shore A hardness of five separate measurements for each solid laundry scent composition is shown in Table 2. [Table 2]

[0070] Aroma Delivery The test was carried out using three separate Miele W377 front-loading washing machines. Each washing machine was loaded with four small terry towels, five pillowcases, and 11 liters of water at 27.5° French hardness. 20 grams of the solid laundry scenting compositions of Comparative Examples C5-C6 and Example 2 were added separately to one of the three washing machines. The washing machines were then started using a color program set at 40°C, a short program, and 600 rpm. At the end of the rinse cycle, the terry towels were removed from the washing machine. Four panelists evaluated the scent intensity of the terry towels treated with each of the solid laundry scenting compositions of Comparative Examples C5-C6 and Example 2, both when damp after removal from the washing machine and after one day of line drying. Each panelist assigned a value of 1 to 10 (1=lowest intensity, 10=highest intensity) for the scent intensity of the treated terry towels, with Comparative Example C5 being assigned a value of 5 at their discretion. The numbers shown in Table 3 represent the average of the values assigned by the four panelists for each of the treated terry towels. [Table 3]
